i wish i could kiss the person who had the rhythm doctor idea. in the mouth. passionately. for hours.Show moreShow less
i tried - seemed like such a fun concept, but just was not fun at all. Maybe it just didn't click for me. It's felt like different variations of 'Count in your head while ignoring the game distractions". Got to 2-X and felt 'meh' about it.Show moreShow less
Oh. my. goodness. Oh, my, gosh. I think I might have just played the best game of all time. This has GOT to be the best game ever made. My god! my GOD!! Every single level made my jaw drop to the floor. Every ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ piece of the game is just filled with so much creativity and polish and care, just GOOD QUALITY, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I have been waiting like what, 5 years about, to play this game? I would check into the steam page and see that there was still no release date, always "To be announced". When is this game finally going to be finished? Waiting for this game to have as much time and care put into it as needed. And was it worth the wait? HELL YES it was worth the wait! Where do I even begin? What you have to understand is that minigame-based rhythm games are rare. Most of the time when you play a rhythm game, there's one set interface and one set way to play that you learn at the very beginning of the game. Then notes fall into place, and all the variation comes from music and difficulty comes from speed. Osu, DDR, Project Diva, DJMAX, Guitar Hero, all those arcade types of games fit that structure, even rhythm runners like Harmoknight and the Bit Trip Runner games kinda do as well. But one notable game that did not fit that structure was Rhythm Heaven/Tengoku. The Rhythm Heaven series is imo the gold standard for minigame-based rhythm games: it shows just how much creativity, cuteness, charm, and love you can put into a rhythm game by designing small little minigames with their own unique art, gameplay, and rhythms. It's such a good formula but it's understandably so rare, I've only ever seen it in Touhou Rhythm Carnival which was directly inspired by Rhythm Heaven. Neon Drive on steam and Beat City for the DS come close I guess? Rhythm Doctor takes everything that was great about Rhythm Heaven and goes just absolutely nuts with its own creativity, even going beyond Rhythm Heaven and doing things unique to Rhythm Doctor, creating and embracing its own unique identity. This is seriously a game that nails its own ambitions. The amount of creativity and passion in this game is just mindboggling. There's care and polish put into literally every part of the game. Similar to Rhythm Heaven, every single minigame either has new rhythm concepts or weaves familiar concepts together in new ways - so even just the gameplay by itself is full of creativity. The art changes between every level too, just like in Rhythm Heaven, which even holds true for the night levels (guys please don't skip out on the night levels, you'll seriously be missing out; check out 2-3N and 4-1N at the very least). And by the way, one of the bonus stage minigames has a music clearly inspired by Rhythm Heaven's super catchy tutorial melody! BUT unlike in Rhythm Heaven, which had a very simple artstyle, Rhythm Doctor goes the way of awesome detailed pixel art and lots of visual effects, which all work really well and turns every single level into a great visual spectacle. Unlike in Rhythm Heaven, the difficulty level doesn't remain at a mostly easy-medium level; there's a good range of intuitive to tricky to tough levels of challenge in Rhythm Doctor, not to mention you can change the speed settings and there are challenging night levels as well. And also unlike Rhythm Heaven which only gives you a mark for perfect runs, there is a rank system here that adds to the replayability factor as well. Now let's talk about story and characters. This game has a really charming story, and really charming characters. This is the kind of game that's full of good humor, is wholesome, has some cute romantic sideplots going on, and generally just makes you smile and happy to see the characters. If you're like me, you're even talking to the janitor between each level to see if his dialogue changes. Every character has either a musical motif or particular rhythm associated with them, every level has flavor text that even updates when you beat the level (which ALSO holds true for the night levels, god the level of polish is so good), and the story even tries to tie these characters together which imo is really ambitious for a game like this. Every character has so much personality, and the way it ties into the gameplay is just awesome. Getting to know the doctors and solve the patients' problems and see them all learn to get along and have some character development is really heartwarming, and there's clearly a good amount of care put into their individual stories too. The way they wrote the musician's "music creator struggles" and doctor Paige's "work stress" troubles shows they put in a good amount of effort to flesh them out in an effective way, and I think it really pays off. And of course, the way the whole game plays around the doctor/hospital theme and adds its own little humorous touches too is really nice. THE TUTORIALS. THE BOSS LEVELS. THERE'S SO MUCH PERSONALITY AND CREATIVITY PUT INTO THESE IT'S INSANE. The boss levels are an obvious standout in this game, god each one made my jaw drop to the floor and I couldn't stop smiling my entire playthroughs of them. I almost wanted to just close my eyes and enjoy the music and vibe with the good vibes, but I couldn't afford to close my eyes and miss all the effort put into the visual spectacle. TRY TO PLAY THE BOSS LEVELS WITHOUT SPOILERS, PLEASE!!! When I first played that glitchy samurai level in the demo years back I already thought this was the most creative rhythm game I've ever played, I wondered if they could even ever top that in the finished game, and after playing the *second* boss level those doubts were immediately silenced. Goodness. And the tutorials shouldn't go unappreciated either. Tutorials are supposed to be boring!! But the tutorials in this game are full of so much personality and there's even creativity there too; different characters talk at you and rhythm concepts are presented so intuitively, the feedback changes based on how well you do, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. The devs were clearly inspired by how good the Rhythm Heaven tutorials are and it clearly shows. So yeah, pretty good game. Absolutely love this game. If you were one of the people like me who waited years to play this game, it was well worth the wait. This game is a masterpiece of creativity and polish. The music is really cool. There's co-op and a level editor. The gameplay is great, the story and characters are great, the art and aesthetics are great, the pacing is great, everything is great. For me personally, this game is going up there as one of the best games ever made. I'm really hoping they carry this level of quality through to the full product, but from what I've seen I think I can easily just trust the developers with that. I'm curious to see what's the deal with that strict doctor guy, maybe in a future level we'll see he's literally heartless and then we'll rhythmically heal a heart into him or something??? Just gotta wait and see. And gotta wait and see for what kinda cool stuff the community will create for the level editor too. tl;dr Rhythm Doctor is a creative masterpiece. Buy it, play it, and enjoy it. ENJOY IT A LOT!!!Show moreShow less
I like this game, I really do. The characters, the tiny bits of world building, the aesthetic, all of it fits together amazingly with a vibe and charm that I just love. The core game-play itself is amazing. While a bit odd, I quickly got used to the controls and it grew on me. Tapping the space bar to simulate a heart beat as a doctor is an amazing idea for a rhythm game, and I really do think Rhythm Doctor pulls it off really well. It's just, one issue. The mechanics, particularly the fact that the game seems to introduce a new mechanic every five minutes and then add a twist on that mechanic two minutes later. While it might sound great, these end up being no more then gimmicks that feel like are then discarded soon after being used, never given enough time to be fully fleshed out. It's like the game has no idea what to do with them and becomes over-encumbered. What's worse is that all the mechanics that are introduced are fun and interesting and work well, it's just that they are given very little time to breathe before you move on. For an example, which does include minor spoilers, there is a patient who has a heartbeat with two beats, called "SVT" in the game. SVT is already a twist on the usual format for the game, where a heartbeat has seven beats. The patient I mentioned earlier with SVT also has a special variant that "swings", which is faster than the usual beats in game and can change between the two. So picture this. You're on your third patient with SVT. You're still getting used to it. Another tutorial pops up introducing "swings" and you have to learn that. You then get into the level and the patient is in the middle of her job and, I can't believe it, not only are you juggling SVT, and the new "swing" beats, but also for the first time ever, the patient's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ heart is not even on the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ screen because the developers needed to fill their "oh, isn't that interesting, how unique" quota for the level. Just space this out, I feel like I'm suffocating. This review is coming from a want of the developers to improve the game. It pains me so much to leave a negative review. This game is fun and is good, it just has this problem of being "too sweet". It's all content that being front-loaded onto the player, new mechanics being introduced left and right, and next to no room for the player to relax and feel comfortable with any of it.Show moreShow less
I was already enjoying this game but when I got to 2-X my jaw actually dropped and I had to recommend this right away, the most insanely sick thing I have ever seen a game do.Show moreShow less
It's a cool game with a great premise (teaching rhythm theory through hands-on examples), but it falls short in too many areas. As shown in the Steam trailer, the game distracts you in obnoxious ways to get you to stick to the beat in spite of them. These distractions, though, get so over the top and intrusive (including having the game forced into windowed mode as it flies around your monitor, which is ESPECIALLY annoying when you have two monitors) that you might as well not rely on your eyes at all. What are you doing, then? You're pushing one button to a beat, without relying on information from your eyes, which hardly qualifies as a game. You can load up your favorite music and tap to the beat for free. The gameplay is too simple. Traditional rhythm games involve multiple different buttons combined with different input methods (simultaneous inputs, held inputs, etc.), in part, to make the visual aspect of the game important. Like reading music on a sheet, you can memorize sections and play the song without the visual aid, but sight is our most relied-upon sense, and it helps a lot with things like timing. Rhythm Doctor, by its one-button nature and its love of throwing sand in your eyes to distract you, often punishes you for relying on your eyes, removing a large part of what makes games fun: interpreting visual information and reacting accordingly. If you're playing music, you may have to deal with distractions outside of your control, but the sheet music in front of you teleporting around the room isn't one of them. The story is worse than an afterthought, it's a waste of time. The characters aren't distinct, and nothing interesting happens between them.Show moreShow less
yeah sex is cool but have you ever played level 2-XShow moreShow less
I really wanted to love this game and the truth is i do! What i got to play of it was extremely fun! However, I am epileptic, I picked the game up after the recent "Reduced Flashing" setting was added and i was hoping that would allow me to enjoy the full game, but unfortuntely the setting doesn't seem to do enough to really help anything unless you already have a low sensitivity to flashing lights. As i am an epileptic, unforutntely I couldn't enjoy the game to the fullest, I hope that eventually this will be rectified and at that point i am defintely going to pick it up again, but until then i can't recommend it to anyone with epilepsy, even with the accessability settings.Show moreShow less

While the presentation of the game is quite amazing , the rythym gameplay is rather poor. I have thausands of hours in various rythym games from Osu! , to DJmax to MuseDash to various little obscure indie rythym games and this has to be the Poorest one in terms of indicating rythyms. You can't really read what is coming next and therfore you can't really play "on the fly" as easily as other games. Most games employ some type of Music Sheet or their version of such. This is true for This game , however it has at most 8 notes. So when you're done with your 8 notes anything can happen. The obnoxiously loud and intrusive countdowns ,various screen light glitches and shaking, act as a unnecessary distraction make the learning process longer and more difficult. Maybe because it's easier for me to count for myself rather than be spammed with 123 123 123 123 123 over and over. Quite loud compared to the music , the game became only playable after completely turning it off in the settings and the I had to rely on visual ques that are also rather poor. Amazing presentation story and concept , very poor execution and Readibility for a rythym game veteran. Mind you if you're playing on easy settings you probably won't notice , because the game gives you god knows how much leeway , on hardest settings and playing for S ranks these things add up very quickly. And as such it's INCREADIBLY tedious to restart a song, because you have to go trough the intro and whatever bs is there prior to the song keeping you from playing the game, can't skip it easily. Which makes "mastering" of the game very very slow and tediuous process. Just to show disparity in time wastage , In osu! you can assign a hotkey say f1 to be your restart button and you INSTANTLY reset to the begininning and you're off practising again. While in this game it takes anywhere from 20 seconds to a minute to get yourself going. Skip the tutorial by pausing going into a menu , then read whatever story there is to read, listen to musical intro and ONLY THEN you're good to go. quite poor replayability. Oh and most games give you the OPTION to turn off visual effects , because quite frankly not all people want to get instant headaches. I did not receive this product for freeShow moreShow less
