This is hands down my favorite RTS ever. Having said that, sadly, the multiplayer is terrible now. Thumbs down for that. I can't even play with my son on the computer next to me. (each with RoN:EE purchased on separate accounts). The LAN multiplayer is gone. The forced online multiplayer is unreliable and disconnects randomly about 50% of the time. Hence, the game is ruined. Its so frustrating and disappointing. Ruined the best RTS ever. :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( I RECOMMEND THIS GAME FOR SOLO PLAY ONLY. I've been playing Rise of Nations for about ten years, since I was little. Probably the best RTS I've ever played. General: > Citrus repairs nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. > Titanium intensifies the Russian Winter. > Sheep make your civilization smarter. > War Elephants instantly transform into tanks. > Horses make tanks cheaper. > Papyrus makes it cheaper to invent electricity. > Rafts with bonfires instantly transform into nuclear attack submarines. > Bears make it cheaper and easier to create the Department of Homeland Security and institute the draft. > The Aztecs can field tank divisions. > The Mongols support their horse archers with fighter jets. > American Hoplites and Cataphracts. > You can bribe trebuchets to transform into howitzers. Conquer the World Campaigns: > Play as Alexander the Great; beat up Indians and steal their elephants. > Play as an European or Native American power; beat up Carribbean islanders and steal their rum. > Play as Napoleon and stop Lewis & Clark's nefarious expedition. > Play as Mikhail Gorbachev, eliminate Jimmy Carter's NATO and steal Ronald Reagan's nukes. > Help the Americans and Chinese fight the Mongols and Ottomans in World War I for control of Mongol-held SIberia. 11/10Show moreShow less
The Extended Edition fails to correctly calculate the damage which units and buildings are supposed to deal. While it does not affect literally every matchup, it does affect every unit or building in some way and causes the damage in roughly 30,000 (THIRTY. THOUSAND.) specific matchups to be incorrectly calculated. Game balance suffers significantly as a result, and unit compositions during the first 4-5 ages become especially boring because certain unit groups are far stronger or weaker than they were ever intended to be, and as such players are forced to use the buffed-by-incompetence units very heavily. Even people who don't play multiplayer are affected. For example, anyone trying to get through the singleplayer Alexander the Great campaign will run into a significant challenge: the opponent's unique elephant units take only a fraction of the damage which they're supposed to from Foot Archers, making them many times more resilient than the campaign was balanced for. That such a wide-reaching and consequential bug remains unaddressed almost nine years after the Extended Edition's release is to me an unacceptable outcome. It should not fall on the community to fix such fundamental issues in a paid product. Additionally there are many other small-medium issues which are also not resolved: other gameplay bugs, tooltip errors, poor networking (issues in multiplayer are common), no UI scaling, scripting bugs, sound bugs, graphics bugs, etc. Many of these are inherited from the old school versions of the game, but a few are exclusive to the Extended Edition. Despite adding Steam Workshop support, the Extended Edition fails to competently implement mod support. Mods that are instructed to be unloaded will not always unload, so-called "dropdown mods" which can be selected in game lobbies will almost always cause multiplayer games to fail to load regardless of the mod's contents, and custom scenarios / custom scripts are difficult to make use of in multiplayer games because support for them has been eroded compared to the older versions of the game. Such a lack of improvement in so many areas leaves the benefits of the Extended Edition over previous versions of the game to be a very short list, whilst the list of downsides is -- at minimum by quantity -- substantially larger.Show moreShow less

The game itself is a nice strategy game. I won't write much about the game itself. An old classic game re-released with some polishment (not worth mentioning) and especially reworked so that it will run on modern systems. In addition Steam functions like workshop, Cloud save, Achievements and the Steam network has been added. This is very good and players can profit from this easy to use functions (e.g. "I want to have this mod; I just need to click subscribe and the game will do the rest. No manuel file download and copying"). ...But ;( This is not bad but the current state of silence regarding support is a shame! They don't give a ♥♥♥♥ about issues people are having sice release of the game. The last update is one year old. As soon as you ask for updates because the problems with the sound, music and multiplayer still exists - no answer. The publisher/developer is answering in the forums but only to unimportant stuff. This is a shame and a no go! This makes me sad because they re-released some games already which have not been sentenced to capital punishment. Age of Empires 2 HD e.g. or Age of Mythology. I see work from the developers there. Why not in this game? If those annoying errors won't exist this would be definitely a recommandation.Show moreShow less
One of the best game revivals. RoN became very fast my favorite strategy games once it got released at 2003 and later with its expasion at 2004. I love it as it consists of gameplay of all eras. Starting with your slignshots and swords, and improving until you get missiles and stealth bombers. It's story is quite good and reminds you of the glory days with some great battle. Multiplayer is one of its best elements. Playing with your friends co-op versus with AI or just an all out battle! Customise the teams as you want and also the battle's options like map size, technologies and winning methods. Now let's talk about Extended Edition. <---Skip here if you just want to learn the differences. The game graphics look quite similar but definitelly smoother. You can feel the overall gameplay and animations of the charaters being so smooth while moving and fighting. Multiplayer is here once again with leaderboards! As gamespy is dying the game now has multiplayer once again and better than ever! I am hoping to see an ever bigger map though and more units instead of just 200/300. I bet it wouldn't be much of a problem nowadays with the new updated and powerful computers. Twitch! Do you like streaming and showing off your gameplay? This will be very handy for you. Log in, hit the record button and show your fans all your strategy tactics on how you beat your opponent! The only downside for me is that the game looks quite similar, yet some small very handy improvements will make it quite better. Bigger maps, yes bigger than Big Huge. People using the editor can remake their countries and some of their battles with a proper big terrain. More units! Setting the unit price to lower and having more units in battle will totally increase the fun of the game. More players? With bigger maps, more players can be added as well. 12 or something like that. Overall? If you liked the original, you are gonna like this one as well. If you haven't played the original, then if you like real time strategy games, you are gonna love it too!Show moreShow less
It pains me to give this game a not-recommended. I played the original for countless hours when I was younger. It has solid RTS mechanics, only slightly below the titan RTS game of AOE2. On top of that it adds a ton. There are a large number of ages, giving the game Civ-like "epic" feel. On top of that, the game has Civ-style wonders that provide passive benefits. The campaigns are extremely solid, with a Risk-style strategic map that allows you to move armies between territories, mount attacks, secure bonus resources, strengthen your territories, sabotage others' and even place World Wonders in safe locations to boost your attacks and defenses across the globe. The game is incredible. Now... the relaunch. I was super psyched that this game came to Steam. I immediately launched the Conquer the World campaign, only to find it riddled with problems. From graphical and sound bugs, to unbearably laggy performance. I have the game alt-tabbed while writing this and for the first time in 10years I see my typed text appear asychronous with my actual input. I'll turn the graphic settings down next time, because I hadn't really noticed them anyway. This relaunch is a poor, poor effort. I was glad it came relatively quickly after its announcement, but that turned out to be a mistake.Show moreShow less
"“Rise of Nations: Extended Edition” is just as good as I remember it, and more. The music hasn’t changed and the graphics are still a bit outdated, but it’ll provide hours of entertainment and is well worth the price of admission. Now all we need is a remake of “Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends”…" Full Review: http://www.dadsgamingaddiction.com/rise-of-nations-extended-edition/ Gameplay Videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ymqm5AopxZw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFalR4wVlk4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nh5Iqg4YIj0Show moreShow less
This game is a lot of fun, but at the moment we are getting a LOT of Out of Sync Errors. Until this can be patched, I will not be recommending this game. The issue is its over sensitivity to internet service dropouts of 2s or less apparently.Show moreShow less
