Is it really that hard to not make bad PC port? Stuttering on a 4090 is just... no. Nioh 2 ran pretty fine and the graphics aren't exactly that far behind from this game (I'd argue it looks better mostly because of the art direction). I'm getting seriously sick of PC ports these day struggling hard on even the finest machines. Combined with the fact that getting a beefy GPU is harder than ever these days, developers should really put some efforts into optimizing their PC ports, rather than... god knows what led to this monstrosity of a port. If you insist on buy this awful port in its current state, my recommendation is to forget about going beyond 60 FPS. Capping the game to run at 60 should alleviate the stuttering issues. Also, turn off RT reflections too, it's simply not worth it. Frame generation doesn't seem to help much with my setup, though play with the settings yourself to see if it improve things for you or not. Other than that, I'm liking the gameplay so far. If only they spend at least some efforts into making the PC port not total trash. ======================== Addendum: It seems that the developers are working on a patch to fix the performance issues. That's a good, but I'm not sure whether I will be changing my review back to "recommended" even if the issues have been addressed. This "release a broken thing then maybe patch later" mentality I don't feel is particularly great for consumers, esp. when it is this broken, and that they had almost a full year to prepare for the PC launch. It seems that some reviewers already warned them about the bad optimization ahead of time, so it's quite unacceptable that this whole mess even happened. Settings-wise, I tried knocking down the graphics to medium/high, the frame pacing issue is still noticable on 60fps 1440p, however to a lesser extent compared to ultra. Still, the point I'm trying to make here is that if even a beefy PC is having *any* problem running it smoothly, what about folks who use a lesser CPU/GPU? I don't mind the graphics fwiw, but there is a serious disproportion on what is being presented vs. what is being asked for here. Anyhow, in the event that I do not change my rating, even when the performance issues are no longer a thing, this would serve as a permanent "please stop with the day 1 bad releases" note. I platinum'd this game on my friend's PS5, really liked it. It's a real shame that the PC version got released in this sorry state.Show moreShow less
For people complaining about the "supposed" PS3 graphics, good graphics is the least of my concern after playing these games in 2024: Suicide Squad, Dragon Age VeilguardShow moreShow less
I genuinely love this game. It’s everything I hoped for from Ghost of Tsushima and Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and so much more! In many ways, it feels like a spiritual successor to Way of the Samurai, modernized to meet today’s standards, for better or worse. The combat is amazing, with that signature Team Ninja flair that makes it incredibly addictive. Character customization is fantastic, offering dozens upon dozens of options to indulge in, from your physical appearance to weapon transmogs to clothing choices. Weapon variety is excellent, with builds that cater to both lethal and non-lethal playstyles. There are dozens of characters to form bonds with (13 of whom are romanceable). Multiple factions, branching storylines, and meaningful choices in the story reinforce the "samurai RPG" fantasy, with characters and allies you can completely miss out on based on your path. The open world is rich and alive, packed with things to do, and you're consistently rewarded in meaningful ways, be it with loot, karma, ronin points, silver coins or bond points. This is something Shadows and Ghost of Tsushima rarely ever managed, with boring, repetitive side content that barely gave you anything most of the time. With all that said, it genuinely pains me to not recommend this game—and the only reason I don't is because of the horrendous and unacceptable performance. This isn't a visual masterpiece; in fact, it looks like a mid-gen PS4 title at best. And yet, it runs terribly like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ PS3 port. Graphical settings are outright broken, the game constantly suffers from pop-in, framerate drops, and even random bouts of slow motion based on your framerate cap. I’ve been forced to rely on frame generation to achieve a consistent framerate—and I’m on an RTX 3070, for ♥♥♥♥'s sake. Even though I believe Rise of the Ronin is an 8/10 game, I’ll have to keep the "Not Recommended" box checked until the performance becomes acceptable. It's genuinely disheartening to see how far industry standards have fallen when it comes to PC ports.Show moreShow less
Nioh gear system, Sekiro combat system, Ghost of Tsushima open world. Edit: set FPS limit to 60 and Details to high + Raytracing and it runs fine.Show moreShow less

Just finished the game maybe a hour or two ago and unlocked the harder difficulty with new gear and felt zero desire to do it. The game is nice for a 40-60 hour playthrough, but maybe wait for a 25-50% sale and patches. Of course it is more enjoyable if you have knowledge on the Bakumatsu Period of Japan. Just as a heads up I have all 3 of the maps at 80ish% and did the Pro-Shogunate """Path""" This game feels like they threw away everything that worked and replaced it with gimmicks from more popular series. Stances with clear roles and abilities that you would naturally learn to use against certain enemies? How about we just do some rock-paper-scissors and then give half the weapons no style choices to choose between? Some people hated all the gear and loot in Nioh? How about we keep the loot but make all of the set bonuses small and boring, so the people that hate loot aren't happy and the people who like making builds aren't happy. Parryslop is popular now, so how about we make countersparking super rewarding then just make all the enemies delay half their attacks and lunge 30m across a room? Also we are making all of your stances have different parry timings and rock-paper-scissors gimps your parry window because ♥♥♥♥ you. (Yes I know you can dodge and block, but half the skills and stats are based on making countersparking super-rewarding.) People gave us ♥♥♥♥ for our level design, so we just made a Ubisoft open world. Oh ♥♥♥♥ we still have to make story missions you say? Fine but they are 5-10 minutes long and super repetitive with the exact same "Kill 3 tough boys" side objective, aside from the like 3 missions where you have to find some dudes and pat their shoulder as well. The story is... odd... on one hand it is enjoyable if you at least have a cursory understanding of the Bakumastsu Period, but on the other, the way it is told is horrendous. They felt compelled to not let the player change history (Let's ignore them have some people live for some reason, the game still treats the history as if they died still.) But they then decided to give the player the false pretence that they could choose a side and make a difference. I did Pro-Shogunate which basically just means every few missions I get to betray the Pro-Shogunate people and help the Anti's because Ryoma realises that helping the Shogunate means he might have to kill his old comrades... yes buddy, that should be the first thing you realise when you start working for the people you were originally against. Most missions ended with me beating a named historic person half to death with my katana, only for them to stand up and leave, with me then working for them as if nothing happened 30 minutes later. ****Spoilers**** I ♥♥♥♥ you not, the final real mission is you murder hoboing your way through a military base and then fighting the commander so you can hand the commander your factions surrender letter basically. "Sorry about killing 20 of your dudes bro! We surrender btw, no hard feelings. Please forget that I have switched sides for and against you like 4 times at this point." The Blade Twin story is... something, that is all it deserves to have had said about it. ****Spoilers over**** Won't go too in-depth with the combat, but when you get the hang of it it's enjoyable but leaves you feeling like the Dev's spent more time trying to fight the player then trying to make it enjoyable, it's hard to describe, but playing the Dojo against certain bosses is an exercise in masochism. The combat seems at odds with Openworld game design, where in Openworld games you are generally turning your brain off and checking off tasks on a list to pass the time, whereas the combat wants you to be completely dialed in since if you screw up one parry or swing one too many times you just get your ass beat and have to watch helplessly as you lose half your hp. The graphics are mostly ok, but with heavy swings depending on lighting and location. I think one of the biggest problems is how barren the cities are, the streets are super wide with tons of houses but a lot of them have noone on them which quickly takes you out of the game and losing your immersion. Other problems with the graphics seem mostly to be optimization/port problems (Bad LoD, bad texture streaming, ect.) which will hopefully be fixed with patches given time. The Character Creation and fashion is very nice, besides Males being mostly forced to have a certain level of "ruggedness" to their skin textures, that might be fixable with deeper understanding of CharacterCreatorfu. Some color options are lacking or just missing in the fashion, so if you wanted a certain color, you might just be ♥♥♥♥ out of luck, since most clothing pieces only have 1-2 recolors that might have some pattern on them you don't like. Very meandering review with a lot bad said, but I still mostly enjoyed my time with the game. Most of the games problems seem to derive from a lack of focus to me, a lot of contradictory design decisions made.Show moreShow less
As soon as you complete the prologue and gain access to the open world, the game performance absolutely tanks. Graphic settings have almost zero impact. The worst part is, after spending way too much time in character creation and the prologue, I went over the two hour limit to apply for a refund. Save your money for something that is actually playable.Show moreShow less
It's certainly not better than Nioh 2, and it's clear that they cut a lot of corners graphically to make this work on the Katana engine, but the combat is very good. So good, that this really doesn't deserve to have such mixed reviews on that basis alone. It's also a massive game that lasted far longer than I expected. If you're on the fence, I'd strongly recommend at least giving it a try.Show moreShow less
Do graphics matter? No. Does it matter when the game is a 150 GB install, and at 4k with everything maxed it still looks like garbage? You better believe it should. The game looks like early PS4 graphics...and the fact that the game performance is INSANELY bad is unacceptable. Before you read other people's reviews saying "Oh if you have a computer better than a potato, it should run great." My computer specs Ultra 9 285K 64GB Ram 4080Super 4k Monitor. Cyberpunk 2077 buttery smooth 4k + Raytracing. Monster Hunter Wilds (With crap performance issues at launch) Smooth as hell at 4k maxed sans Raytracing. This game: Massive stutters, sub 60fps performance. I can see the amazing gameplay underneath this horrific launch...too bad it's a horribly optimized game. Until the performance is fixed, I can't recommend. For now just save the 150 GB of space in your computer for some NSFW alone time videos. You'll have an infinitely more enjoyable time, in 45 second bursts.Show moreShow less
