You see, I do speedruns of this game called Katana ZERO. You might've heard of it before. Doesn't matter. Listen. I've been waiting every day for its DLC to drop. Every. Day. Run after run, repeat after repeat. Lost both track of time and my ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sanity. But at last, I've found something. Something to salvage me from that boredom. SANABI. Yes... that should work. I'll play this until that long-awaited day arrives. ... Oh. And nice little Easter egg there. I enjoyed it. Good game so far. I look forward to its development.Show moreShow less
Sanabi is a game that is frustratingly less than the sum of its parts. The good: the graphics are obviously great, the gameplay is mostly fun and satisfying, the story is long-winded but engaging. The bad: so what's the problem? The pacing is a huge obstacle. You get 3 minutes of gameplay, followed by 5 minutes of dialog. Back to 1 minute of gameplay, followed by 2 minutes of dialog. Back and forth, back and forth. The game barely lets you get into a rythm before it slams on the brakes and takes you out of the action. It's almost worse that the story is actually pretty good. If it were garbage, I could say "just skip past all the story bits and enjoy the gameplay", but I really feel like you'd be missing out if you did that (at least on your first playthrough). Long story short, I'm sure some very talented people put this game together, and I hope they get the chance to make more projects in the future; I just didn't really enjoy my time with this gameShow moreShow less
Katana zero with a grapple hook. Need I say more?Show moreShow less
Very very mixed feelings with this game. Clearly a great deal of passion and polish went into its creation. 1) I love flow 2) I love fast-paced twitchy action games with smooth moves and tight controls 3) I love good storytelling But I've never played a fast-paced twitchy action game wherein the flow is CONSTANTLY and EXTREMELY interrupted by needlessly overabundant storytelling that you cannot "speed up" enough so as to maintain your flow without skipping the long drawn-out cutscenes entirely. Katana Zero perfected the balance that SANABI clearly just doesn't understand. Dramatic pauses lose their meaning if you use them every damn sentence. Respect your audience. Less is more, yeah?Show moreShow less
I wanted to swing around not cry :,)Show moreShow less
Every single moment of getting into a flow state with the gameplay is bookended by long, repetitive cutscenes that completely kill any momentum. This game gets compared to Celeste and Zatana0 a lot, but both of those games manage to tell a great story without removing any control from the player for half the runtime of the game. it's a shame because the core mechanics are very tight and the story is decent, if predictable, but ultimately I just walked away annoyed. It really shines the most in the beginning, but by the end I would have liked for this game to have been several hours shorter with about a quarter of the cutscenes.Show moreShow less
its really hard using a grappling hook when you're cryingShow moreShow less
I really, REALLY want to like this game. The art, the soundtrack, hell the game play that is there is fun. But dang, the designer of the game didn't want you to play. It is literally, 30 seconds - 2 minutes of game play and then 10 minutes of cut scenes. Sure, the cut scenes are skippable, but getting taken out of the groove every three minutes is terrible game design.Show moreShow less
8.5/10 Among the myriad of indie games in the Early Access phase in recent years, SANABI has not disappointed players in terms of the speed of its official release or the quality of the final product. In my opinion, it even deserves the accolade of the Best Indie Game of 2023. With its innovative and extremely smooth chain-hook movement and combat mechanics, exquisite character pixel animations, straightforward yet compelling storyline, stunning cyberpunk-style art, and dynamic synthwave music, this game, which is easy to pick up but also has a high skill ceiling, is a gem that should not be missed by any platform action game enthusiasts. While many players enjoy comparing SANABI to top games in its genre like Katana Zero, in my view, aside from the art style, soundtrack, and some homages within the game, there are significant differences between the two in terms of narrative approach, game core, and actual gameplay. SANABI offers a more streamlined and exhilarating combat design, and its storyline is far from obscure—narrative unfolds in an orderly fashion with plenty of foreshadowing, which is more accessible compared to the fragmented and complex narratives often favored by many indie games. In terms of level design, although the game integrates many puzzle-solving elements within its scenes, making some levels somewhat tedious, the chain-hook prosthetic arm allows players to swing almost continuously in the air, enjoying the silky thrill of never touching the ground. Moreover, the design of the boss battles is overall excellent, maintaining exhilaration while presenting spectacular combat scenes through limited pixel graphics. The adjustable difficulty settings enable players of any type to enjoy the game freely, and the absence of cumbersome collectibles and achievements makes it easy for players to experience all the game content. The game only takes about five hours to complete, including the time spent on narrative cutscenes, which may leave players feeling somewhat unfulfilled after finishing. Additionally, the level design not only suffers from low distinctiveness but also features a high rate of reuse, with background details that can appear crude. Furthermore, the boundaries of the map are difficult to distinguish, which can lead to visual and aesthetic fatigue during extended play sessions. The unique chain-hook arm design may require some players to spend time adapting, and the monotony and homogenization of gameplay become more apparent in the later stages of the game. Most levels are designed to create a sense of urgency and oppression, which can inadvertently stress players and detract from the experience. As for the storyline, which is a selling point, it is not immune to clichés and contains some plot holes and inconsistencies that can feel burdensome to players who cannot empathize with the characters. With every hello comes to a goodbye, and perhaps the encounter with SANABI is the same. The high repetitiveness makes it hard for most players to pick up the game again, and for the vast majority, the end of the second playthrough on legendary difficulty marks the lifespan of the game. However, as someone who played the Early Access version in early 2023, I still believe that despite these shortcomings, it remains an excellent indie game. The final product definitely lives up to the expectations of most players, and it won't disappoint most fans of side-scrolling platform action games and indie game enthusiasts. Most importantly, since the storyline is one of the game's key selling points, make sure to avoid any spoilers to preserve the full gaming experience. Find my reviews valuable? Eh... the other negative reviews are right: the game is kinda boring. You can look at the trailers, and it's pretty obvious what the gameplay is supposed to be. And it IS that gameplay, which is kinda fun, but it gets real stale real fast. The game (as far as I was able to stand playing it) just feels REALLY padded for time. The non-gameplay (writing, dialogue, cutscenes) drags on for far too long. There's nothing wrong with having a narrative-dense game, but this isn't that: this is just poor writing that takes forever repeating the same thing over and over again. The gameplay similarly suffers from padding, where you just spend way too long doing too much of the same thing. The mechanics aren't developed enough, heightened, and combined quickly enough. It all just needs a ton of fat-trimming. I guess, by the sheer amount of positive reviews it has at time of writing this, that most people just enjoy the moment-to-moment gameplay and the characters enough to not mind that everything drags out so much longer than it should. But for my taste, comparing to some other games I think nail their pacing better, this game just needed more time on the cutting room floor. Should you buy it though? Eh... probably. The game is cheap, it's a neat mechanic, and the art is really quite impressive. I think they deserve the money, but they should try to do better on their next game (if they make one).Show moreShow less
