Feels like I'm doing something illegal by giving this a thumbs down, so I want to apologize to those who really enjoyed this VN in advance. Guess I'm just playing the devil's advocate. tldr - It's not a bad game by any means. But despite the game's beautiful setting and music, I personally don't think Senren Banka meets my expectations enough to recommend it due to its poor character and story immersion. Yuzusoft usually does great at making cute romantic stories. Senren Banka is no exception to this. However, it's exactly that and not much more despite its amazing potential. In comparison to other Yuzusoft titles, Senren Banka has the most interesting premise in its lore and story, but probably the worse execution in telling it which greatly impacts its ability to immerse its audience. Instead of using the setting and allowing us to immerse more into its characters and world, the main story feels more like a simple blockade of boring fight scenes and out-of-place fan service that we have to forcibly read through in order to enter each heroine route. Many of the individual routes themselves also come off as questionable. This is because they basically consist of awkward romantic developments in the form of unnaturally horny and cheesy character interactions that further pulls us away from any sort of seriousness in the narrative that was established. Considering how long and slow the main story line is before we even get to the individual character routes, the main story tricks us into thinking there will be some kind of deeper lore to help develop our character relationships, which unfortunately there really isn't. By the time I even finished the common route, I couldn't help but think about how bland and shallow everything was and many times I felt like dropping it. It ultimately lead to me having little to no urge to pursue some individual heroine routes because I didn't find them interesting enough. I suppose this could just be me expecting too much. After all, this is a Yuzusoft game; They aren't particularly well known for creating deep stories. Senren Banka also suffers from a much poorer cast dynamic in comparison to its other Yuzusoft titles. In terms of the cast, its difficult to pin-point what I felt went wrong. While all heroines and side characters feel great in representing their individual personalities, there seems to be an issue when you put them together. Unlike other Yuzusoft titles, Senren Banka lacks any sort of solid relationship between the heroines and other characters outside of the MC in order to establish a strong and compelling group dynamic. It feels harsh to say, but some characters are just completely irrelevant and meaningless to the overall story due to their relationship and poor screen time with other characters. There's not enough development or meaningful interactions from some characters to justify them being there in the first place and it wouldn't be an oversight to say that some characters, if removed from the story, would have no impact on the main cast or story narrative at all. To explain how I feel: Imagine watching your typical anime or show that takes place in a setting with multiple people in the background. You see the main characters having an important discussion, and suddenly one of the background characters walk up and starts talking to the main characters mid-conversation, while contributing nothing to said conversation. You scratch your head confused, wondering why they're even there in the first place and later on you kind of forget they even existed. That's the usual gist of some conversations and it's basically wasted time. You can argue that this could just be due to the story's setting, as all of our characters aren't naturally forced together; like in a school or a club room. But nevertheless, its kind of a shame, as I feel Yuzusoft games usually excel at character to character dynamics and having them all play a part in the story. Unfortunately for me, I'd say Senren Banka is on the lower end of Yuzusoft visual novels. I would still recommend this for people who simply want to turn their brain off and enjoy a cute romantic comedy with a rural Japanese setting. For people looking for more or expecting quality similar to other Yuzusoft titles, I personally don't think Senren Banka matches up to them due to the reasons stated above. So, I find it hard to recommend this if you've already read the others. EDIT (2/12/2022): So, I convinced myself to finish all the routes despite losing interest and dropping the game for a bit. For reference, I had only finished Mako's, Yoshino's, and Murasame's routes when I initially decided to drop and review the game. I have to say, I enjoyed Lena's route quite a bit, as the narrative in her route is far more enjoyable in terms of the story and romantic development. Her route explores and expands much deeper into the plot and also allows us to have the entire cast coming together more often, much to my pleasure, as opposed to the other heroine routes having most of the cast seemingly disappear for the majority of the story. However, my previous negative points still stand so I won't be changing my mind on keeping this a thumbs down. Roka's and Koharu's routes didn't present anything special to me either, as expected from side characters who rarely had screen time in the common route. Sorry.Show moreShow less

-Story: 6/10 The story is very generic with very convenient solutions. This leads to very little or short tension in the story. The common route is like a basic essay assigned to and written by a middle schooler. The branching routes let you explore the heroines and learn more about the curse from different perspectives. The branching routes are different in that they offer more insight into the lore of the legend, which i liked. However, how you "hook-up" with each heroine has exactly the same format. Which cheapens the replayability. -ART: 10/10 The characters look great and the facial reactions do a great job portraying their reactions. I'm mostly impressed with the backgrounds. There's so much detail in most scenes that my eyes can help but explore. -Music: 9/10 The music is very enjoyable and there are a few that I wouldn't mind playing on repeat on my playlist. TLDR: Game has good art and music. Story is terribly boring and how you get with each girl is exactly the same: spend some time with her, they realize their feeling, confess, then sex in that exact order.Show moreShow less

I honestly thought that this game was overrated, the story is a generic chosen hero that saves a village from evil spirits where whenever he fights he always ends up escaping with nothing truly bad happening or he ends up winning the fight in the end. The protagonist was pretty much the typical bland, dense protagonist that has nothing interesting to his character. At least the other characters are kind of good, exploring their routes was kind of fun, except when the game pulls you out of their side stories and forces you to read the main story. The romance on the other hand had no impact on me, mostly because I found it very lacking. Most of the story is spent trying to solve the mystery as to why the town is cursed, which boiled down to the protagonist and his friends fighting the evil spirits (multiple times in the same locatiton) and collecting their shards since it served as a key to uncover it, what sucks is that it constantly shows the protagonist having multiple very boring training arcs where he slowly becomes stronger and once they actually beat the spirits they show them going to the towns doctor so she can inspect the pieces, every single time. The choices are just there so you can get laid by one of the girls (including the protagonist cousin), there's no risk of anything bad happening to you or the characters. The reason for the main villain to curse the town was just out of some generic vengeance. Music was mostly not my thing, since most of the music is centralized around the traditional Japanese music genre. I would only kind of recommend to buy the game on sale for the characters if you are interested in them and not for the main story since I personally found it boring, even though I forced myself to finish the main story and Lena's route (which her route offers the most important parts of the main story). There are way better mystery visual novels out there like Steins Gate and Danganronpa series, and if you want a good romance visual novel then just get Clannad. Leave a comment if you disagree with something that I said, but please keep in mind that this review was mostly me sharing my opinions of the game.Show moreShow less

Keep in mind, if this type of cutesy VN interests you, than by all means buy and enjoy it. It appeals to the moege audience quite well. I’m just writing my opinion on it all. Before I begin, I should preface by saying that this review only covers the common route and main heroine routes, excluding the ‘normal’ ending and each of the side routes. I may make adjustments to the review once I’ve 100%ed the game, but I feel that ultimately won’t be necessary; I will elaborate on this later. Overall, Senren Banka was probably one of the most mediocre things I’ve read through, and eventually found myself flipping through the text at faster and faster speed because it simply couldn’t hold my interest from how repetitive it was. Senren Banka is about a group of heroines affected by the local curse to varying degrees, and the story resolves the conflict of the curse in different ways depending on which route you choose. Unfortunately, the plot of Yuzusoft VNs is never their (strong) point, so don’t expect anything crazy with this one, either. Piecing the main plot together through the different routes might be fun, but I picked the story-heavy route on my blind playthrough, so I’m probably not the best to give my opinion on it as a whole. That being said, if you plan to 100% the game, save Lena’s route for last, as otherwise you’ll get bored during the other routes afterward since you’ll already know everything the other routes allude to, plot-wise. If you only wish to play through one route – which I couldn’t even blame you for this VN, all the routes feel very much the same in flow – than just play Lena’s right off the bat. Choosing a route is incredibly simple and straight-forward: for the main routes, you’ll basically never miss any of the route branches on accident. There are guides out there if you need one. So far, I have played Lena, Murasame, Mako, and Yoshino in that order, and perhaps it was just me getting bored, but I gleaned less and less enjoyment from each subsequent route. They’re very much written the same, and the pacing of said writing will constantly be giving you this whiplash effect. Sure, common routes are usually pretty slow and mild, given their propensity toward character development, but once you head down a route the writing really just goes full throttle and ruins the pacing. This isn’t mitigated by the fact that the characters themselves almost feel like different characters before and after their route is solidified – basically, as soon they confess, each of them turn into huge horndogs outta nowhere – including MC, who generally suffers from VN MC syndrome of being pretty bland but ‘thoughtful and kind’ (with THE GENERIC-ASS MC DESIGN). Unfortunately, this degradation of the story toward depravity seems to happen every single route, and things get very repetitive, very fast. Side characters are pretty good and do what they need to do, and the heroines stay relevant (aka, present) in routes that are not their own, so that’s a big plus. Like many VNs, the main conflicts of each heroine when it’s not their route and swept under the rug and conveniently forgotten, or mentioned very briefly before being discarded without any development. I understand its not their time in the spotlight, but it’s always just irksome to see these huge plot points in one route suddenly not matter at all in the others. *cough* *cough* Murasame’s route *cough* I covered it a bit already, but the overall tone of this VN is light-hearted and ‘cutesy’, and that’s probably what most readers are looking for anyway. While it does that well, if you’re looking for anything deeper you’re obviously in the wrong spot. When the plot does get serious to any degree, it feels pigeon-holed and usually isn’t allowed to go on for long – they simply must have immediate comic relief, and I’m generally not a fan of that. Many times I caught myself having to partially rewind and reread plot-relevant backlog, because I was half-reading some characters talking about sex or the MC and heroine being lovey-dovey for the 30th time that chapter. This abruptness between serious and light-hearted/horny moments was painfully common, hence the constant whiplash I mentioned earlier. Many scenes felt like a struggle to get through because they simply appeased the moege/eroge target audience and didn’t really contribute anything else, and overall it got super predictable and boring. Speaking of, I did not download the patch for H scenes, but I doubt I missed much. The art is pretty good! The characters look solid and BGs are about what one could expect from a VN of this calibur. The transition effects between chapters were pleasant, and the chibi-style CGs were super cute. Some of the CGs where they were making out were a bit weird, and you can obviously tell they only edited the mouths to make them different. The BGM and OST wasn’t bad, nothing to write home about but never got irritating after almost thirty hours. Here and there you might wish they recorded a few more tracks, but that’s its biggest offense. Overall sound design wasn’t bad, either – if you’re the type to enjoy all the sounds of them making out, you’ll have a hay day. The voice acting itself was pretty great, especially Lena’s; I would often cycle the backlog trying to get her line to pop up, it’s quite pleasing. Senren Banka’s game design (i.e., interface) was detailed and had plenty of features I didn’t even know I wanted in a VN until I had them – the ‘panic’ button was appreciated, and being able to favorite certain voice lines was a nice little feature for some of the funnier moments. Being able to skip to the next scene/choice and visualize the branches was a pleasant touch and I do give props for that. Overall, do I regret playing this VN? No. I’ll finish through the rest of the routes to 100% it, even though I know I’ll probably get bored or cringe many more times; I wouldn’t do that if I straight-up disliked a VN. It’s nothing I’ll personally be writing home or recommending to people, but I sense it’s simply because I’m not its target audience. If you *are* into moeges than this is probably worth picking up on a sale, just don’t expect anything stellar in terms of plot or route individuality.Show moreShow less
7.5/10 Senren*Banka is a regular Gal visual novel game that won't let you down. The plot perfectly interprets what is called a bland but not mediocre daily life, and the music, art, and character design are also quite good, which is unique in similar games. I think this game can be used as an entry game for many players Galgame. Smooth and comfortable gameplay and just the right length of the game make for a relaxing and enjoyable gaming experience. Although these kinds of games are inevitably clichéd and unreasonable in some plot content, they are still handled very well. All in all, this game is very suitable for players who have not been exposed to Galgame but want to try it. In terms of the plot, every route of the game is handled very well, and the world view perfectly fits the plot, which is very suitable for leisure and relaxation. For those players who often play Galgame, I believe there is no need for me to say more, this is a game you can not miss.Show moreShow less
It's a very lighthearted visual novel, where the most interesting part of the story ends before you get to the routes. It's very slow with filler content that should be fun and humorous but just feels like they're droning because there is no real story to care about. After playing a few of the routes, it feels like any sort of conflict should have been either addressed or happened in all of the routes or be apart of the main story. The character designs are amazing with a good soundtrack to back it up, but the everything does start to sound the same after some time. I'm pretty tired of this incredibly dense protagonist, who doesn't have any real redeeming qualities to make me want to make choices as him. It feels like after the first few hours of the game, the writers didn't really know how to make the routes interesting or have any purpose for the player to want to keep reading except for the cute bits of high school romance. An improvement from their other work, Sabbat of the Witch, but misses the mark for me.Show moreShow less
