I got the game from the devs for beating the demo an all difficulties :) W DEVSShow moreShow less
9/14/23 edit: Game has been updated so you can save progress in Rogue Steel and grind has been reduced. Still leaving my review as-is though because I don't think that's enough to flip my opinion to a thumbs up. I knew going into this that the campaign was short but I was hoping to get my money's worth out of the extra game modes. Unfortunately, they're just not fun to play and have way different pacing and tone than the campaign. If you're looking at this just for the campaign, be aware that $24.99 for 2½ hours of gameplay is definitely not worth it. While the campaign is very good, the two extra game modes (Firefight and the newer Rogue Steel) aren't. Firefight has a meta leveling system where you unlock new starting weapons, arm cannons, and difficulty mutators (which include positives, negatives, and cheat codes). However, it's very grindy with an exponential exp curve that feels like something out of an online game battle pass system. You'll be forced to grind certain levels over and over, stacking difficulty mutators and re-achieving challenges, just to continue to unlock new maps. It's great that there's 42 levels in this game mode, but I was really feeling the grind on only map 11 unlocked. Rogue Steel has a card system rogue-lite element where you pick difficulty modifier cards before each new map. As you work your way through new levels, your score is tallied, modified, and the difficulty continues to ramp up. The announcement for this mode sounded cool on paper, but it's terrible to play. There's no checkpoints mid-level and some of the levels have high enemy counts. Most maps in other modes have 20-25 enemies and the map I stopped my run on had 55 enemies; death means starting the whole map over with nothing to show for it. The worst part is there's no save system between maps; this means you have to run all 10 maps in a row, without exiting the game, in order to receive a score and rewards. I commend the devs for using so many color harmonies other than the stereotypical modern cyberpunk take of blue and purple, but it's sometimes so colorful and saturated that it's hard to look at. There's also a really ugly low quality rust palette used on certain maps (that looks more like a staticky scab) that stands out for the wrong reasons. The levels feel like they were painted from a collection of materials from different authors because you'll get realistic wooden floors next to cartoony metals and sometimes the aforementioned rust added in too. Then there's the complaint about the "cyberpunk" themes... I could write a 10 page essay about how garbage modern cyberpunk has become but for this game it just distills down to a visual theme. The character models look fine, but they look like they're pulled from any generic cyberpunk character pack on a 3D model website. Sure, the campaign is a frenetic, wild ride through a wide variety of colorful levels. The soundtrack is fitting but nothing amazing. Enemies have callouts and swear at you, but it's all the same voice actor. Parts of this game feel like a ton of effort went into it (like player movement and gun play), while some parts feel like bare minimum. I picked this up for $7.49 on a sale and even then I feel a bit let down by the experience. This game is way overpriced for what you get. If the store page piques your interest, wait for a deep, deep sale. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend this for the average person.Show moreShow less
I have confession to make. I'm really not good at FPS. Actually, I'm pretty terrible. I can't even call myself a "casual" FPS fan because my skill level is worse than that. I can't aim. I don't even like FPS that much. I almost never play FPS on anything other than easy. And if it has first person parkour, it's near impossible for me to have fun. This is still true with Severed Steel. But I'm so thankful that the dev thought of people like me and basically added god mode as the easiest difficulty, allow me to actually play the game with infinite bullet time which made me able to actually aim and parkour.Show moreShow less
Don't get me wrong this is a neat game especially for people who want something fast paced and unique, however the 2 things that kill it for me are price and content, The performance at times even on a decent rig can be kinda up in the air but I didn't mind that too much. The problem is, In my 40 minutes of playing I had beaten half the game and barely realized it, without seeing much difference in enemies or mission types. Now I understand the fun of the game is jump around , slow mo shooting bad guys, and trust me it is fun. But for 25 dollars jumping around shooting enemies in the same way on the same maps with the same objective is going to get old pretty quickly. Especially when I have games like L4D2 where I can just bounce around and shoot people all the same. Overall, I think the game has a neat concept and is very fun as a gimmick you might jump into every couple of days for 30 mins. But honestly 25 dollars is a very far stretch in terms of the game play you will receiveShow moreShow less
I must be dreaming, right? There is no way this game ACTUALLY exists. If I wake up tomorrow, and this review is still on my account, then this wasn't a dream. 4 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ gigs, a good Show-Dont-Tell Story, rays a 1050 can trace, HDR support, Voxel Destruction, every gimmicky movement tech from the past decade integrated together seamlessly with the inclusion of slowmo and unlocked Y axis camera, and taking the GOOD parts of: N+, Super Hot, Titanfall, Mirrors edge, Orange Door, FEAR, Crisis, Matrix, Metroid Prime, Double Action Boogaloo, AND ♥♥♥♥♥ AMEN BREAK SAMPLES. Im literally shaking. And the fact the game's main mechanic is to do stunts in order to maintain constant i-frames means the game's OneShot mode actually has a purpose and thats the cherry on top. That OneShot mode! MOLTEN STEEL! Ive been doing nothing but playing that and its the most ive ever shaked. Every decision from kicking the ground for a corkscrewing double backflip, adding every little bit of momentum and stunt-frames I can. One more dodge. One more inch of sliding. Anything I can do to get under this table, around this next pillar, and onto the wall across the room that is crumbling around me. THIS IS WHAT IT MEANS TO GAME. THIS IS THE ADRENALINE I NEEDED. AND THE ENDORPHINES RELEASED ON LEVEL COMPLETION BEATS MY FIRST TIME GETTING LAID. I just kicked a gun up into the air and caught it, did a vertical walrun, did a half backflip, and cleared the room. What the actual ♥♥♥♥. IT EVEN HAS A LEVEL EDITOR?! OH MY GOD! There is no way this game is real. Im telling ya. This is that game that you see in your dreams and wake up pissed because it isn't real. I'm gonna wake up and be that guy tomorrow aren't I? There's no way I'm trippin' this review didn't happen either did it? Im gonna be so pissed wishing this game was real and that everything I just experienced was a dream.Show moreShow less
Just too short. I had a lot of fun but there really isn't much content here and while I'm sure some might find it fun to replay on higher difficulty or challenge the firefight mode to score higher it didn't attract me. I got 5 hours out of the campaign and a bit of side grinding firefight but even fore a nearly half off sale price I still feel a little let down. Its a interesting game but just not explored enough to justify its price.Show moreShow less
Superhot meets mirror's edge.Show moreShow less
In theory this game looks like a combination of both SUPERHOT and Ghostrunner, which is the main reason why I bought it. In practice, the gameplay feels very loose and the UX is pretty bad: 95% of the times I had no idea I was about to die nor what any of the stuff on my screen meant. There's almost no story and the levels are very loosely connected with each other. Enemies feel like randomly put in each room and the level design itself reminds me of old FPS's where you just walked around in circles for ages until you found the right way to go. I see a lot of potential here, but this is not it. I thought I was playing an early access title the whole time, but not because of bugs (I didn't find any), but because everything else feels "incomplete". 6.5/10 - Not recommended.Show moreShow less
it was perfect. Perfect. Everything, down to the last minute detailsShow moreShow less
The gunplay feels good, but the movement doesn't. you can't cancel a dive and canceling a slide feels clunky. Also, there are a couple of levels that just have really bad design to them. The whole point of this game is to dive, kick, and slide through levels while shooting the enemies, but some levels are way too cluttered for it to work well. Also, This game is less than 2 hours long. I beat it in 86 minutes on the middle difficulty. At 25 dollars, this game needs a lot more content. There really isn't anything to do once you beat the game other than beat it again. Wait for a sale on this game, in its current state, you're not getting much for your $25.Show moreShow less
