im sure this game is great for others but i completely hated it. its hard, and that's usually not a bad thing. but this is hard in a way that deaths and hits don't feel like your fault, the controls are loose and awkward and it's hard to even navigate the map. death is unforgiving with how spaced out save points are, and will lead you to redo the most frustrating sections. i love a good challenging metroidvania, but i just cannot deal with faulty controls. sheepo will slide too far, move on their own, and the walljumping is so aggravating i wanted to throw my computer fifteen minutes in. not to mention how difficult feathers are to get, which require ridiculously hard platforming or discovering hard-to-reach secrets to just get *one*- I thought these were just fun extra points, but no, they are currency. the second i found the shop i left because i knew i did not want to spend the time collecting these and i would live without the stupid upgrades (i hardly got into the game, but they mostly sounded like they were needed for progression. which sucks.) sheepo has a compelling story and art style, an interesting world, and i really really tried to like it. but getting as frustrated as i was, only 40 minutes in? was a dealbreaker. for people who enjoy extremely difficult mechanics, good on you! this is a good game for you. but for a casual player, i'd recommend sitting this one out.Show moreShow less
TL:DR - Buy the game. A perfect introduction to Metroidvanias for newcomers to the genre, some of the best feeling platforming I’ve experienced in recent memory, and a 10/10 SpeedGame As someone that finds the Metroidvania genre pretty intimidating, Sheepo was a perfect introduction. Many other reviews have pointed out that this game is very light on its metroidvania mechanics and this is precisely why I loved it so much. It allows for newcomers to the genre, such as myself, to avoid feeling overwhelmed and simply enjoy the game and the atmosphere it provides. On the gameplay side of things: this is one of the best feeling platformers I’ve played in recent memory, sitting up there with some of my favorites such as Celeste. Kyle, the developer, has done an absolute amazing job! The movement feels very fluid and rewarding, and if you’re a fan of action/precision platforming, Sheepo is for you! After beating this game and falling in love with its gameplay loop, I decided to look into its speedrunning community and was super pleased with what I found. Runners had discovered mechanics within Sheepo that don't take away from what makes the game so enjoyable, but rather adds to it, furthering the enjoyment I’ve gotten from the game. If you are at all interested in speedrunning and think this might be a game you’d enjoy, I would highly recommend it! In conclusion, if you’re thinking about purchasing Sheepo and anything I listed above resonates with you, I would recommend the purchase. Though the game is relatively short, it's absolutely charming, a blast to play, and I would suggest it to anyone!Show moreShow less
The platforming is fine but the collectibles aren't well thought out. You lose unsaved collectibles when you die and you can't heal, so you end up having to redo tedious parts because you died in an unrelated obstacle. Backtracking to the ones you missed is also tedious since there is no combat.Show moreShow less
The Metroidvania Review Metroidvania Breakdown and Full Review | | Subscribe to our Curator How Metroidvania is it? Medium Fit. You gain the ability to take over creatures that lets you access new areas, but you do not get any permanent upgrades usable anywhere. The map isn't particularly complex and exploration rewards are primarily for collecting or key-based progression. Curator Review Sheepo is a functional and fun platformer that manages to wear just a little thin with its gimmicks even with its short playtime, but makes up for it with a uniquely bizarre atmosphere. Got so severely bored with the game I quit and refunded the game. The map is fairly open and doesn't hold your hand which is good. The problem I had is that the game felt too easy and there were no incentives for finding secrets or backtracking. You just get some useless feathers. No upgrades. No joy of exploring the world. I senselessly just ran forward for an hour before deciding the game was trash. I had a bad feeling from the initial tutorial of the game. The jumping felt too clunky to me. The move speed and jumping speed did not feel right to me when compared to other platformers. I wasn't expecting a hard game but was hoping for a good metroidvania experience. Can't say it was because the lack of upgrades and combat (you don't kill anything except bosses, I guess, but it's more like you make the bosses commit sudoku). Half the reason I bought the game was because I had a friend named Sheepo and saw the game title and I liked metroidvanias. If you like metroidvanias - honestly I would give this game a hard pass. Even Gato Roboto was better than this.Show moreShow less
This game is a short adventure and not the most challenging, but those are the only things I can think might turn anyone off it. The controls are smooth like butter, the characters are hilarious and endearing, the visuals are adorable, and the soundtrack is a bop. I played the game casually in one sitting because it sucked me in completely, and I've now played it again in one sitting probably at least 100 times because it's so engaging as a speedgame. I highly recommend it to someone just looking for a fun casual game to play in a day or two, and I make an even stronger recommendation for someone looking for a platformer that makes for a very good entry-level speedrun. The movement makes the whole run a fun time, and it's not punishing like some games so it's easy to make progress as you're learning.Show moreShow less
I can definitely see the potential that would grow into Islets and Crypt Custodian here, but it's very raw and just not that fun to play. Timings for avoiding obstacles and projectiles are all way off from what would allow for smooth, skillful movement. The transformation gimmick is interesting, but not really that fun with how limited it is. The extra platforming challenges for feathers are kind of meh. I would probably give this one a miss, but the later titles by the developer are well worth your time.Show moreShow less
"Sheepo is an easy, relaxing, fun, little, cozy, 3-hour game." - Satan Sheepo is an extremely demanding metroidvania, with many sections requiring ultra-precise platforming and defeating several tough bosses (I died to the Slime Queen 50+ times, which is more than I died to Consort Radahn in Shadow of the Erdtree). The game didn't take me 20 hours (Steam is lying), but 8 hours and 14 minutes (according to my save). Even 8 hours is still an awfully long time for a game that most people finish in 3-4 hours. My time was due to the sheer number of deaths and constant replaying of certain levels. I'm about to play Islets and Crypt Custodian (I started with Sheepo, of course) and I sincerely hope that these two games are easier than Sheepo, because it's an extremely demanding game hidden under the guise of a small easy game.Show moreShow less
I started out enthousiastically playing Sheepo because I generally like metroidvanias, but I quickly became more and more irritated by the awkward controls. I also disliked how the game is not giving me any incentive (or even hints) to press forward as the story is simply too nonsensical. I got to about the 50% point and now I am just too bored to continue.Show moreShow less
