The illustrations and voicework are wonderfully evocative and do build a lot of atmosphere, that's well executed and I wanted to get that out in front but once I got to the meat of the actual premise I kept waiting for the "and then what?" moment. You know, something more, something that would bring it all together into some sort of coherent overall story? That never really came, instead it kinda starts to drag before the end and then you get a lot of high-minded abstract philosophy that I don't think is actually as clever as it seems to think it is and then the game just ends leaving me feeling kinda unsatisifed. Idk. Entirely possible I just Don't Get It but well. i don't get it. did nothing for me ultimately.Show moreShow less

Definitely one of those "journey > destination" type of experiences. The mystery and vibes of the time loop are pretty compelling even if the stanley parable framing device is a little overdone. For at least the first few loops, and the revelation of the extra, outside-the-loops plotline, the first maybe 2/3 of the game is pretty great. The art is definitely the strongest component of the experience and the voice acting and even the foley really bring it to a surprisingly high bar by the time you're ready to see how it all ends. Unfortunately, the ending is one of those endings that will really make or break the entire experience for a lot of people in my opinion. Other reviewers have compared it to a Just Monika type situation and even I was expecting a Danganronpa comparison but honestly it's not even close. Without spoiling it too much, it's a pretty straight laced, self contained, 4th wall intact kind of game. That on its own isn't even a bad thing per se, but somehow what was there is pretty underwhelming. Call me stupid but the verbose and obtuse nature of /every/ character trying to explain to me the nature of my decisions really took me out of it. Once you've advanced to the final stage, you're thrust into a The Master fallout conversation boss fight without any of the stakes ever really explained to you and none of the conclusions you reach really feel like a satisfying answer was found. I get that the uh big cosmic horror tropes this part of the game draws from usually end with unsatisfying or inconclusive finales but I dunno man. I'd think that when I ask someone what I am or what they are at least three times in the entire game, they could give me a straight, unambiguous answer if they really want me to agree with their perspective. Either way, Yes, you can fix her but sometimes they're more interesting unfixed. Can't wait to see what else the devs come up with though.Show moreShow less

Narrator: You're in a review section of Slay the Princess. You're here to write a review. If you don't, it's going to be the end of the world. (Explore) Isn't that a bit overstating it? I really doubt the world will end if I don't write a review. Narrator: I didn't want to say it but I had to. You had the right to know about the gravity of our situation. (Explore) Then I best get to it. Proceed to write a review. Narrator: You start typing, the clacking of the keyboard almost deafening. There is so much to write. Voice of the Hero: There are not enough words to describe what this game is. Narrator: Who's the one overstating now? Voice of the Contrarian: Why are you still here? Narrator: To make sure you do what you've been tasked to. Write a review and save the world. Voice of the Smitten: Of course he wouldn't understand. The labor of love that is Slay the Princess is beyond your meager understanding. Narrator: Enlighten me then. Voice of the Skeptic: You wouldn't get it. Voice of the Hero: Slay the Princess is a non-linear visual novel that deals with a... Voice of the Smitten: It's a love story! Voice of the Paranoid: It's a horror story. Voice of the Hero: It's an unique experience, worthy of your time. Worthy of seeing it through, discovering fresh perspectives and new beginnings. Voice of the Hero: It will keep you intrigued, dumbfounded and stay with you long after you've finished it. Voice of the Smitten: You'll end up smitten! Voice of the Broken: Or broken. Nothing will feel as it used to. Voice of the Hero: He's not wrong. Did I mention it's beautifully voice acted? Narrator: Why, thank you. Voice of the Hero: Jonathan Sims and Nichole Goodnight carry so much in terms of setting up the mood and the atmosphere and the way the play of each other is impeccable. Voice of the Smitten: They're the best. Voice of the Hero: You owe it to yourself to experience this game. Because it's not only a game. Everyone: It's a love story!Show moreShow less

I'm honestly not sure why Slay the Princess is highly rated. Even for things I don't like, I usually can understand what other people see in it, but for Slay the Princess, I really don't. Further, I also don't even know what drove the devs to make this game. What was the inspiration/core idea for this? As an overview, Slay the Princess is a short visual novel with a ton of choices and branching. The player is tasked by a narrator to kill a princess, who is said to have the ability to end the world. "Starting over" upon death is baked into the game, tasking the player to explore different choices. I'll start by listing some positives. Specifically, the game certainly had effort put into it. Every line is voice acted (which adds up quite a bit given all of the possible variations). The art style is unique, with a 2D (mostly) black and white sketch style where you can shift the perspective by moving your mouse, and it has several musical tracks made for it. It is polished enough that if it weren't for the core UI elements that are a part of all Renpy VNs, I wouldn't have known it was Renpy (Renpy is the most common development tool for creating VNs) Unfortunately, that is where the positives end. The primary problem with the game is that it is empty. For any story, a writer is typically is looking to do at least one of the following: 1) Have a message to convey 2) Have characters that the audience becomes attached to 3) Have a mystery where upon seeing the answer, the the audience will go "aha" 4) Have exciting action segments 5) Make the audience laugh 6) Inform the audience about something 7) Wow/impress the audience in some other way Unfortunately, Slay the Princess does none of these. As such, the VN is just kind of... there, supported by some decent stylistic pieces, but none of it comes together and amount to anything. I'll address the lack of each of the points via spoiler posts below. Honestly, I don't think the VN is worth playing, but if you do want to still engage with it, then stop here and see what you think for yourself. 1) The closest the VN has to a message is "change can be good or bad," which, yeah, sure. But this moral, beyond being somewhat uninspired, is barely integrated into the actual VN, and just kind of thrust on the player in the ending. Typically if you have a message, you want to be thematically resonant through the story. However, this message not really explored in Slay the Princess so much as preached to the player at the end. 2) The only characters in the VN are the player character, the princess, the narrator, and miscellaneous voices (day 1 is always only "the hero" with later days adding on based on choices). None of these are fleshed out characters. The player character is basically nothing, beyond being told they are a god in the ending. The princess changes with every choice, and indeed is supposed to be a representation of a goddess of change, but this basically means she has no character. The voices (including the narrator) are the closest things to characters but certainly are not fleshed out enough for anyone to grow attached to. 3) The 4 mysteries are "Who is the protagonist?" "Who is the princess?" "Who is the narrator?" and "Why are the events happening?" The answer to these are "A god of unchanging." "A goddess of change." "A being who created the protagonist." and "The narrator created the protagonist to kill the goddess because he hates death, and removing change will remove death." This is not something the player can come to on their own, and indeed, isn't even an "aha" moment at the end. You will go through a few vignettes, not particularly relevant to the above information, and then just get told it at the end. Thus, it fails the basic requirements for a good mystery. 4) There aren't really any action sequences, beyond a few quick lines getting about how you are killed in some scenarios. 5) I can't say I ever laughed in the game, or found anything remotely funny. 6) I don't think I learned anything from the VN. Certainly, nothing covers real world events, and a message of "change can be good or bad" isn't exactly new to me. 7) There weren't any "wow" factors. The closest I had to any emotion while playing was seeing the protagonist's gross arm when it was shown for the first time. This caused a slight "huh" from me. And that's it. None of the scenarios are particularly scary or intense. And they are all too short to form any attachment to.Show moreShow less

Interesting idea, but the writing is inconsistent and the ending overwrought with "I'm 14 and this is deep" philosophy. Would have liked it much more if the theme had stayed with "the world is as you define/expect it to be" instead of switching to be about death and mortality. I would be excited to see if this team tries their hand at a more personal, nuanced story and not feel the need to say something "important".Show moreShow less

I was fairly disappointed. I will do my best to write this without spoilers as while it isn't for me, it might be for someone else. If you've played the demo, you know about 80% of the story. There's not much more after that. The game, in all, is only a few hours long and the ending is the equivalent of "it was all a dream" trope as it gets without actually being a dream. As someone who watched the development of the game from start to finish, was a patreon member, apart of the discord, and was thrilled up until the day it came out and received it, I feel a little bit like there wasn't ever a point to it. It is a bittersweet visual master piece, but when your choices don't really matter in the end, it does feel very pointless and melancholic. That said, if you're okay with it not actually being much of a love story despite what was advertised and aren't against the "just a dream" trope, you will greatly enjoy this game. It is not a *bad* game, simply one that boasted to be bigger than it's britches allowed for, in my opinion. It was given to me as a birthday gift and I'm sad to tell my partner that for us specifically, his money would have been better spent else where. Edit: @keretor I'm gonna reply to this comment but only really once as it's been like 2 years and I don't tend to review or comment to comments on my reviews but I felt like clarifying to this comment since there were a few mentions of this (one of which basically was like "I'm convinced you didn't finish the game" which... fair - I wrote this review in tears and wasn't very articulate) - When I say it's not much of a love story, I mean it isn't the expected style of love story. Slay the Princess is, at it's core, a visual novel style love story - as someone who LOVES visual novels, I was expecting something akin to the standard on that, where every single choice leads to a different type of ending. That is not how this game is formatted and that is okay, it's just not what I was expecting or really wanted. Spoilers ahead for those who are confused by what I mean and have finished the game; There are a few different endings for each route, but they all coalesce into one. I was hoping for a game where each route WAS the game, with the discovery of the Narrator's meddling and then how the internal voices are affecting us and her separately. So each ending was like "The tower, Good/Bad/Neutral/True end" but the different routes don't affect the final ending that much; she's not The Tower, or The Damsel - she just is The Princess. That's fine in its own way, but not what I was looking forward to. I was sorely disappointed because it was not standard faire. It doesn't HAVE to be.To those who were not pleased with my review - My review is based on MY disappointment from MY expectations. This was my birthday present from my husband after being giddy for somethings specific. That wasn't what the developers were going for and that's fine. But my review will be based on my opinion with the knowledge that I spent quite some time really really excited for something a bit more traditional for the game style and if it was mentioned that it WOULDN'T be, I didn't see it. I wrote this review to serve as a warning for those who had the same expectation *I* had.Show moreShow less
