Sleeping Dogs was originally going to be a direct sequel in the True Crime series many years before actually coming out. Thankfully, this never came to fruition. After a few changes, and a few publishers later, Sleeping Dogs came to be. Some will say it is the spiritual successor to the True Crime series. I'd like to think the connection never happened. Mainly because this game is just that good. Too good to be tied to a deservedly so dead series. Sleeping Dogs takes place in Hong Kong, and has you playing the role of an undercover cop with ties to a small group of triads, as you work your way up through the ranks, and work from both sides, as a straight up police officer, and an undercover officer playing a triad member who gets in too deep. It's a risky business, but for our main protagonist Wei Shen, it's all part of his life now. Sleeping Dogs is an open world action game modeled after games like Grand Theft Auto. You can run around freely, drive cars and ride motorcycles, and either take on main and side missions, or do other things as you progress through the game. Sadly, there is not much to do in terms of sandbox play. The world is very nicely detailed, and seems to be alive with the amount of people you will see moving about, but there just is not enough freedom to make this a real sandbox open world game. Most of the things you'll find yourself doing will be set up as part of the game instead. And anything you make up along the way will be few and far in between. Unlike open world games like San Andreas or Just Cause 2, where you can spend countless hours outside of any scripted events, making the game seem like your own little playground. This may be partially due to how constrained the world is. You can wander around streets, and inbetween buildings, and even inside of some, but the world is not as open as I would have liked it to be. Just don't be fooled by how big the map is, as lots of areas can not be accessed outside, due to barriers. Regardless, it is still a pretty big world. Just not ripe for exploration. Hopefully this gets remedied in the sequel. As for action gameplay, its nice. You won't find yourself using guns often, but when you do, the cover system is decent, and aiming is not too bad. You even get a few max payne style moves, like slo-mo diving thrown in the mix. The star of the combat however would be the hand to hand stuff, which is reminiscent of the Batman Arkham games. You will not be one on one most of the time, but rather one on many. Weaving in and out, doing parries, and a number of nicely animated kicks, punches, and grapples with ease. It's almost like poetry to see it in motion. When you are running from cops, or chasing down the enemy, you'll also find that Wei Shen is a good master of parkour. You don't have a jump button sadly to just jump whenever, but instead the parkour is tied to platforms and obstacles. So you run up to a wall, and Wei Shen will run up and grab a ledge when hit the proper button. He can jump over gaps, slide over obstacles like cars and tables, and more. Again, this is quite nice to see in action. As for the audio, it's fantastic. You have a nice selection of radio stations, featuring both HK Eastern and Western themed stations, full of commercials, and great music. You also have some amazingly done voice acting, helping to bring the story to life, with a cast of seasoned voice actors and tv and movie stars. The voice acting is also a mix of english and cantonese. Mostly english spoken, but a bit of cantonese here and there for authenticity. Some characters will also only speak in cantonese. While pedestrians will almost always speak in english. But the accents are just right even when spoken in english. Sleeping Dogs may not be the ticket for anyone wanting a true sandbox open world game, but for those starving for a good action game with an open world set piece, and a great story. Sleeping Dogs is the perfect fix.Show moreShow less

After 46 hours gameplay and 100% completed game achievement, i need to say this game is pure gold. Even though people says its like Grand Theft Auto so thats why this game is just "boring copy", they think. This game doesnt need to be "Grand Theft Auto killer" to be fun and exciting to play. Story of the game is wonderful and so exciting and intense to watch, so much story line tricks and turn-ups. Game focus on to chinese open world place called "Hongkong" as based to real-life city of China. Driving system of game is pretty contradictory. Cars, motorbikes & boats. Nothing special, but nothing to lame. What makes the game unique is it's fighting system. Easy to learn and fun to do. Story & game itself use's more fighting than guns and i think its good choice because its different way when comparing other games. And of course game uses melee & firing weapons, not very much of them (in my opinion) but its understandable because of the fighting system of the game. Graphics are beautiful when you download free "High-Resolution graphics" from steam store. It makes game more beautiful. Game contains sidequests, collectibles and minigames. Vehicle stores, clothes stores, food markets, parkour tracks and even karaoke bars! +Story(line) +Chinese atmosphere +Cool and beautiful looking chinese Hongkong +Fighting system +Sidequests, collectibles and exploring adds more to do -Confusing Driving system -Scumbag AI -Most of storyline quests are too easy -"Side stuff" is in many places one-sided 9/10 One of the best games ever what i have played Greetings from finland, i have so bad english :DShow moreShow less
IF YOU ARE LIVING IN GERMANY, DO NOT BUY THIS GAME VERSION! TRY TO GET THE INTERNATIONAL VERSION SOMEWHERE ELSE OR YOU WILL MISS OUT ON MUCH OF THE CONTENT! Basically Asian GTA. I really enjoyed this. The German version is a travesty: Heavily censored and you can´t even play the DLC. I don´t understand why a game needs to be censored this much even though none other than 18+ adults are allowed to buy it anyways? Because German adults can´t handle gore? Also, a lot of bugs were not fixed in the censored German version.Show moreShow less
Misleading title, there are no dogs in the game.Show moreShow less
Cool game, cool story, nice open world. Gameplay is also OK, although driving cars feels a little strange. I would recommend this game to everyone but germans. If you are not living in germany, feel free to ignore the red thumb and imagine it to be a blue one. For the germans (and whoever decided to read further) Why thumbs down? Because again, we were getting the cut version. There is not that much cut violence, there still is blood, so that is not the issue. The real problem is, that because of that special region lock there are no DLC (not even the free HD textures) availiable for the german version, plus the game did not receive much patching and is still an early build compared to the international version(s). And the only info you get from the storepage is "cut content - less violence", while in fact a LOT more is missing. This is unacceptable for me and that's why I am giving a thumbs down, although the game itself is pretty decent. (even in this crippled version i play)Show moreShow less
What was once shelved and left for dead by Activision is given new life and what would have been the third in the True Crime series is now Sleeping Dogs, exceeding expectations of just about everyone but Square Enix, the new publisher. Sleeping Dogs is an open world action-adventure(sandbox) game that takes place in China where you play as undercover cop Wei Shen, tasked with infiltrating the Triads. The game has been compared to other games in the genre, most notably, GTA. While similar in gameplay, Sleeping Dogs is no clone. It has an interesting story that should keep you enthralled, coming up in the underworld of a criminal organization, racing across the streets of Hong Kong, shooting it out with rival gang members all while undercover for the HKPD. The gameplay is what you would expect of a game of this scale and caliber. The game will give you plenty to do and will leave you wanting more. Unfortunately, the DLC doesn't quite fill that need. * You can play with either Keyboard and Mouse or plug in a controller. I tried both input methods and found both options to be enjoyable. Thankfully, that means the choice up to your preference. Pros: +Very fun +Good story +Solid gameplay Cons: -Story is a bit short. -DLC is lackluster Overall rating: 8/10Show moreShow less
Germany keeps censoring lots of products and kind of controls their people with a limitation to "non-gore only versions". Absolutely despise that, its a laughable state that were still living in 2024. Being a grown up man forced to see only a limited part of movies/books/games is nothing more than offensive to human rights and intelligent beings at its core.Show moreShow less
Not a stretch of originality to be seen, but that's okay. It's fine if you blatantly skin your gameplay inspiration from some of the best games of the last three years, so long as you pull it off like Sleeping Dogs has. Combat is a simple, not-so-fluid, homage to Rocksteady's Arkham games. Free motion like a muscular dysfunctional Assassin's Creed and for transport/driving it rips a blank page out of Square Enix's own Just Cause's manual while the narrative is your average hard boiled vice story with an American protagonist. Individually they falter, but as one game they all succeed. I enjoyed it, and maybe you will too.Show moreShow less
Don't buy the German version !!! All the enviromental kills and the violence have been taken out!Show moreShow less
