[Addendum added bellow] Slime Rancher 2 is gorgeous, polished, and charming on the surface, but the gameplay loop is shallow, grind-heavy, and frustrating, especially in the late game. At first, it looks like a farming sim (raise slimes, collect resources, and expand your ranch), but very quickly it turns into more of a menagerie and scavenger simulator. Progression is slowed to a crawl by exorbitant upgrade costs, forcing you to re-explore the same areas repeatedly just to gather basic materials. Automation exists in theory (drones, cannons, teleporters, etc.) but each one is so overpriced and inefficient that it’s usually faster to just do the work manually. By the time you can afford them, there’s little reason left to use them. The “Grey Labyrinth” (aptly named) highlights everything wrong with this design. You’re asked to gather dozens/hundreds of rare resources like shadow plorts, one or two at a time, from enemies that vanish in seconds and respawn slowly. This isn’t engaging, it’s tedious and headache-inducing as you retrace the same paths for hours. Endgame progression feels less like farming/discovery, and more like a lab rat pressing a button for crumbs to see when you'll quit. The world is pretty, the slimes are cute, and the sound design is great, but beneath the polish, there’s just so little to explore. The story is paper-thin, characters are two-dimensional, and lore/diaries scattered around the map add little when the gameplay itself feels so unrewarding. If you loved the first game and don’t mind the grinding, you might enjoy this, truly, but for me Slime Rancher 2 wastes its potential and my time. What could have been a cozy, creative farming sim instead devolves into a repetitive collectathon designed to stretch playtime rather than respect it. Note: I will update this review if the game is adjusted. Addendum: The devs have started tackling some of the biggest issues I mentioned in my original review, especially the heavy grind tied to late-game resources. It's good to know they're making an effort to improve the game's balance and pacing. While these changes may seem minor, they indicate a very important trend: the game's focus is shifting back toward the ranch, instead of the resource grind. Right now, the primary issue is that you spend most of the game upgrading your ranch only for it to matter less and less in the late game, which still feels backwards for something that should be at the core of the experience. I haven’t tested the update yet, but I’m still genuinely glad to see the team addressing this, as it shows they’re listening. It’s a good step toward letting the ranch (not the resources) be the heart of this game again. I’ll update my thoughts once I’ve had time with the patch. For now, I’m keeping the original review above for context.Show moreShow less

I would like to preface this by saying one thing: If you enjoyed SR1, you will probably enjoy SR2. With that out of the way, I would like to warn that the game is truly not in a state to justify it's current price tag. We are over a year in and there have been updates fewer and farther between than the first game. While I am sure the finished product, whenever that ends up being released, is going to be a wonderful experience, I am currently experiencing a lot of buyers remorse and would still opt to play the first game over this by a landslide. It's disheartening that after around 6 months of radio silence, the game got an update consisting of just a weather system, and two slimes from the first game. My trust in the development team is wavering, and I fear it could be several years before the game is at a state where the price justifies the content. Is the game bad? No. Is the game new? Kind of. There are a few new slimes, new areas, but all the gameplay mechanics have yet to be improved upon in any way. The graphics are "prettier," but besides that, it truly just feels like unfinished DLC for the first game rather than it's own identity. I'm not ordinarily one to bash small studio games like this, but communication from the team was nonexistent for all of 2023, and I feel the current review ratio does not aptly articulate the state the game is in at the moment. It likely will get better, but if I could go back in time to when I purchased this game, I would absolutely hold off on buying for another two years.Show moreShow less
its like cocaine without all the bad parts and also it is nothing like cocaine and just has slimes that make me happyShow moreShow less
As someone who really enjoyed the first game, I want to like this more than I do. The game looks really nice, and there's some new slimes that look great. However, at this point it feels more like a DLC/Re-skin than an actual new game. I get that it's in early access, but it feels like there's no point in playing. I'm missing a storyline, quests, or any significant events. Right now, I'm just running around collecting slimes, just like I was after I finished the first game. And that's fun, but I'm missing THE POINT of playing. I feel like they missed the mark at this point. Even as an early access game, it feels way too bare to pay full-price and too bare to release. It feels like I'm playing a carbon copy of SR1, but wuth better graphics. There's nothing really new about the game except for the setting (which leaves a lot of room for filling). Suggestions would be to add mini-games, more collectibles, puzzles, and most importantly: a point to work towards!! Even the call-feature feels like its a placeholder.. I am missing the feeling of restoring the glass-desert, or working towards upgrades. Finally, I feel like they should add way more options. Take all the good things from SR1 and add a ton of new features. For example, new ways to interact with slimes, more customization (of character, house, ranch etc.). I'm just missing anything that's groundbreaking, or anything to justify a sequel to the already good game. I hope they will add tons more during the early access period, because right now it doesn't feel like a new game but more an expansion. Not worth the price point as of right now, but hopefully in the near future. Too bad I played over two hours, otherwise I would have refunded it.. Edit: To anyone trying to invalidate my opinion because it does not align with theirs. Before telling me it's early access, tell me something that is NEW in this game, like actually vastly different from its prequel. What makes this game the sequel and what makes it that it's ready for release, even in an early access state? Hope to get some genuine good answers instead of the typical - i like it so ur wrong - types of comments. Final edit for all the defenders in the comments: First of all, ITS MY OPINION. I bought this game (in early access) for the full price. If I'm asked if I would recommend it to someone else RIGHT NOW: I will not recommend it. In its current state, the game is not worth the full retail price. IN THE FUTURE, this might change and so might my opinion. I get it that my opinion is not the same as yours, but take that time you put into trying to invalidate my OPINION and put it in the game since you clearly like it THAT much. You don't see me spouting negativity on your positive reviews, do you now? With that being said: goodnight.Show moreShow less
Good game. Only thing I want is a minimap, because I'm directionally challenged and don't like the inconvenience of taking my map out every few seconds.Show moreShow less

TL;DR: Fun for a while, until you realize its a grind fest with a lack of content beyond base Slime Rancher. Wait for the full release or buy Slime Rancher 1. This game has a much different upgrade system than Slime Rancher 1 which in theory is an improvement, but in execution leaves fatal flaws that are very easily noticed. Much like the gadgets in slime rancher 1, the upgrades are crafted using materials and plorts. However, materials are locked behind timed resource deposits, resetting every 1-2 days, with some spawns not even being guaranteed. In order to go get these materials, you'll need to venture far across the islands and hope and pray they decided to spawn that day. While you're gone, your slimes will produce endless plorts, too many for one person to handle. When you eventually come home to deposit/use your materials, you'll find that there are way too many plorts to deal with. it will usually take 30 minutes to an hour to clear your ranch of excess plorts. While this may sound like a good thing, there is absolutely nothing to spend your money on. No 7Zee rewards, No toys, and the decorations available are way lamer than Slime Rancher 1, just being trees and rocks you would find on other islands. In addition to money being near useless if you aren't literally within the first 3 hours of your save, there are ZERO methods of automation for anything found in game. No automation for plort collection, sale, or storage. No automation for resource gathering or storage. Ultimately, this leads to the main gameplay loop being: Leave to gather materials > Come home > Spend 30 minutes to an hour cleaning up plorts and feeding slimes > Rinse and repeat. You may be asking yourself why I haven't mentioned any of the mini-games or quests found in Slime Rancher 1. That's because they aren't here. The only impact the NPCs from Slime Rancher 1 have on this game is occasionally calling you and giving you a blueprint or a lame decoration. For this game being over a year into it's early access, it feels like abandonware, the game feeling like a shell of Slime Rancher 1. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. If you already own Slime Rancher 1, play that. If you don't, buy that instead. Wait for this game to fully release to buy it, and even then, be cautious and read up to see if the lack of content has been fixed.Show moreShow less
