I'm an older gamer and enjoy sniper games. Not as fast paced, and I don't play online war games as I usually get my butt kicked fairly quick, so, the sniper games are fun for me. I have the complete Sniper Elite series and have been playing them since the first one was released. I play mostly on the cadet mode as that is where, for me, it is most fun. I get this "review" is not what most are looking for but I just wanted to say I am having fun and so far enjoying the game as I hope you will too.Show moreShow less
The game penalizes you with less XP earned for everything you do in single player if you choose not to play with online invasions. RefundedShow moreShow less
If Call of Duty is too fast for you, this game is perfect. Play cadet level if you want to just relax a little and snoop around taking pop shots. I'm 56 and this game is great for people who aren't as fast with the trigger anymore... ie, on Cadet level :-)Show moreShow less
Unfortunately a 6.5/10 for me at the moment. Core elements remain the same as in previous iterations, but new mechanics are implemented very poorly and detract from the overall experience. Most notably, the developers added vertical movement (a la Assassin's Creed), but--unlike in AC--while you can climb *some* surfaces such as vines, you can't even walk up the bank of a road or hop over a small pile of rocks. This leads to extremely awkward gameplay where you are never sure whether you can climb over something or not (usually not), and have to try first to find out. The aforementioned problem also means that the large open map, another new feature, is actually not large at all. For example, there are some roads that you simply cannot walk off of because you are somehow unable to ascend a 15 degree incline, despite being able to climb the side of a house. Compounding this problem are barriers that have absolutely no reason to be barriers, such as slightly-dense foliage and low walls. Why can I climb over medium walls but not low walls? The worst is when you find out you can actually climb something, such as as a side of a house--only to realize that it leads to a dead end (i.e. you cannot top out) and your only option is to climb back down. Remove the ambiguity, please. The redeeming quality is that, once you get past the fence that could only be cut in one place but not another, and actually get sniping, it's the same old goodness as before.Show moreShow less
Great game but they got rid of the unlimited throwing rocks to distract soldiers. I will never forgive Rebellion for this action. 4/5 -- 7.5 hour update Its really a 5/5. The rocks held a special place in my heart but now having played the game a bit more I understand why it was replaced. They added bottles and whistling. The bottles are a bit over powered. One toss can knock out enemies silently. The whistle makes me fell like I'm Sam Fisher back in Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, luring all the guards around the corner to their demise. The addition of shooting out lights and climbing up the sides of buildings makes this game fill those Assassins Creed and Splinter Cell shapes holes in my soul after years of disappointment. Its the superlative of Sniper Elite games. V3 was really good, 4 was way better, 5 is simply the best.Show moreShow less
The game is fine, but that's not what this review is about. The new 'invasion' mechanic is implemented horribly. I don't know who worked on it, but it suddenly expects you to play like you're in some battle royale arena instead of Sniper Elite. I was invaded in the first level, died because I tried to be aggressive, and was immediately invaded again, so I decided to find a defensible location and watch my angles of approach (y'know, like a sniper, in my sniping game) but was immediately penalised for 'camping' by having my location revealed. It wouldn't be so bad if there was some incentive to approach each other over time, but with open maps the size of some small countries, no time limit, and no regular hints about where the other guy is hiding (unless you use telephones, which can be booby-trapped), dealing with a single invader can take upwards of ten minutes. And this, in turn, wouldn't be such a big deal either, if you didn't get XP docked for playing with invasions disabled. If Rebellion is so proud of this new "feature" that they'll punish you for opting out, you'd think they'd have made sure to iron out the kinks first. I'll review this game properly if they find some way to make the invasions fun, or stop punishing people who opt out, because right now, they're a stain on the whole experience.Show moreShow less

(Disclaimer, i've played the game for 13 hours, no clue why Steam says 0.2 hours) I love the Sniper Elite series, but they certainly messed up this time around. For starters, the game plays like a generic action-stealth MGS V clone, instead of a Sniper Elite game. 99% of all combat takes played within 50 meters, making rifles pretty useless compared to a pistol. The maps are also lacking in verticality, which is bizarre for a sniping game. Also, in the past you could take a shot on Hard difficulty and the enemy would only be alerted. Take a few shots, and they would pinpoint your location. Only on Authentic difficulty would the enemy immediattely pinpoint your position and run towards you en masse. In Sniper Elite 5, now a single shot will immediately alert the enemy of your exact position, making sniper kills only viable from a few pre-orchastrated locations (the ones with a soundmasking generator). This means that apart from a few pre-orchastrated locations, you’ll be using the silenced pistol for the entire game. They’ve also removed S-mines and Trip Mines from the game, to “streamline” the experience for new plyers. In previous Sniper Elites, you could cover your sniping location by laying those mines in doorways/stairs/etc and could make some really awesome traps that way. Now the opportunity of trap laying is gone since you only have 2 teller mines at your disposal. What makes this even worse is that they’ve convoluted the game with all kinds of new ammo types, all of them having no de-facto advantage over the normal and subsonic ammo. They’ve also added the Shu-mine, a non-lethal mine. However, playing non-lethal has no advantage whatsoever, since the total XP you get from that playstyle is always lower than playing lethal. You can also no longer replace your weapons with enemy weapons. Enemy weapons now function as disposable items; You can finish off the magazine and than they’ll disappear, Use your own weapon or item and the character will drop the enemy weapon. What makes matters worse is that there are a ton or rifles, smg’s and pistols in the game, but the player has only a handful of them in the load-out screen! Why create so many types of rifles, smg’s and pistols if the player can’t use them? The new weapon customization sounds great in theory, but the difference in stats are so little that it basically has zero use. What makes it worse is that they’ve removed all the different reticles you could select in previous SE games. Why would you do that? Why would you remove the Sniper out of Sniper Elite, and replace it with generic MGS/CoD stuff? Also, the new X-ray vision looks graphically great, but all the added veins and muscles make it impossible to discern the organs and bones from it, so the X-ray vision is less conveying in damage and gore than the X-ray vision in Sniper Elite 3 and 4. There is also an issue with enemy bodies disappearing. To unlock a new weapon, you must kill a high-ranking officer in a specific way. My tactic of preference is to pacify the officer and kill all other enemies in the area so the killing of the officer by explosion/falling objects/etc makes no sound. However, bodies disappear very quickly after pacifying or killing them, so that officer you pacified is disappeared by the time you come back to him. You can also no longer wait to loot the body of an enemy, since the body will disappear ASAP. What is strange is that this was an issue in Sniper Elite 3 as well, and fixed in Sniper Elite 4. Why did they revert back to a known game problem? Conclusion If you love generic action games, buy this game for a few bucks after all the DLC’s have come out. If you love Sniper Elite, stay clear of this entry.Show moreShow less
Love it! a great game, bought it yesterday and I never stopped playing it till half two this morning! I can do that as I am a Very young at Heart old man of eighty!!!! My wife and I bought our first gaming machine the Phillips G7000 in the late 70s I think young people would like it on multi-player but what do I know! I only like single player!Show moreShow less
I am reviewing the campaign from a Single Player perspective only as I couldn't care less about Coop, Invasion or whatever. Sniper Elite 5 is a case of one step forward, two steps back, and one of those steps backwards was straight into a pile of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. As I sit here scraping my boot, here are my main grievances: 1. Removal of Crouch Run: I have no idea who thought this was a good idea, it makes traversing open areas a case of squat walking at a frustratingly slow pace or full on running at normal height in full view of all and sundry, it makes moving stealthily into position much harder as you will frequently find that you are left accidentally standing at full height when attempting to make quick adjustments to your position . This is doubly baffling as to why it was removed as this was one feature Sniper Elite IV was praised for being "ahead of it's time". 2. White Outline when hiding inside bushes: Even playing on Authentic you still have a white line outlining your full body when you are concealed by a Bush... just why? it completely breaks the immersion and cannot be disabled from what I have seen so far, in Sniper Elite IV you knew you were concealed by vegetation when a sound played and your marker became fainter, was that not obvious enough or something? 3. Replacement of Infinite Stones with Finite Bottles: This is a particular bug-bare of mine as in previous Sniper Elite games you could cheese the entire games on any difficulty by luring away every German one at a time, this took hours though and was more a fault with the AI being too thick to realise that their battalion strength unit had mysteriously disappeared in the past couple of hours... This also completely ruins a secondary use for Stones, which was to destroy light sources, you can still do that with bottles... but for the fact that you only carry a base amount of FOUR. Meaning that if you want to destroy lighting to aid with your stealth you have to use bullets (great) instead or spend hours running back to pick up more bottles. This is like when they replaced Heat Sinks with Thermal Clips Between Mass Effect 1 & 2, it made no sense lore wise but was implemented to make the game less individual and more like every other third person cover shooter. 4. Contrived map design & Invisible walls: This is quite possibly the worst area in which SE5 is a downgrade from SE4, despite having huge maps, instead of being large open sandbox typed areas everywhere instead seems like an extremely contrived series of arenas, invisible walls in the forms of low wall barriers, that for inexplicable reasons the player is unable to vault over, obvious cover and flanking points, like every area was purposefully designed for a Sniper's convenience. Sure SE4 did this somewhat too, yet the environments felt more like real world places, with more options open for the player to use their own initiative in completing objectives. Every map I have played so far just feels like a Sniper Elite 3 map on a larger scale. 5. Invisible magnets: When enemies are alerted to you, by firing your gun or what not they will frequently fly into cover as if they are a big lump of metal being snapped into position by a large magnet. This also happens with the Player too when moving into cover and is perhaps one of the worse faults with this game as it can and will mess up your shots, picture this, you're in empty lung and are just waiting for an enemy soldier to run into your line of fire only for you to pull the trigger and the invisible hand of god to move them two meters to the left behind a wall in a fraction of a second. This will happen every time you try to kill more than one person in Empty Lung at a time. 6. Everything has been Babyfied: Rebellion apparently worried that Easy was not Easy enough, and so have added a new Very Easy mode, and left out the Authentic Plus (future DLC?), I couldn't tell you what the difference is, Authentic mode didn't seem all that much different from Very Easy, the Sniping even on Authentic seems to have had it's ballistics simplified to make hitting enemies easier. I was getting far more kills in Authentic in SE5 than I would do in SE4 playing without the Aim Assist. 7. Silenced Pistol pre-order bonus is only available for Axis snipers in Invasion mode. Self explanatory. 8. Hangovers from Multiplayer in Singleplayer: I don't know how universal this is, but I got really excited the first time I entered a Bunker on the first mission and saw a phone on the wall that said "Invasion only", my immediate thought was that if either I or the AI picked up that phone it would alert all of the Germans on the map to the Allied invasion of Normandy.. what a cool feature I thought, distracting all of the enemies from one side of the map whilst I sneak in the back. it took me a couple of seconds to realise that no, it's some multiplayer ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that has been left in the Singleplayer despite having "Invasion mode" disabled. If it's disabled it shouldn't be there, I've no idea what the stupid phone does and I'll never find out as the day I enable Invasion mode is the day I decide to swap my PC for a Mac. 9. Lame Aesthetic: The Aesthetic of the previous games, the cute tutorial cards, the atmosphere, the UI, the HUD, the menus, it's all been stripped out, the game now looks like a generic multiplayer shooter with all of the little artistic qwerks and style sucked out of it giving a bland appearance. 10. To Rebellions in House BLM representation and equality adviser: Whilst there is no problem whatsoever with having Black playable characters in game, I find myself really really really having to stretch my imagination to believe that a Black SOE agent, a Black French Resistance Fighter and Black soldier of the Segregated 555th Airborne (a unit which never did active service in Western Europe, or anywhere outside the Continental United States for that matter during the war) have any place in a WW2 game set in North Western France during D-Day. It's less believable than the Nazi Super McGuffins that Rebellion comes up with every game, it breaks immersion though honestly the real issue with this is that it ignores the Racial Prejudices that were common amongst the Allied nations of the time and creates a false impression that people of colour were treated the same as Europeans, which they weren't by any European army/society of the time, indeed it trivialises the actual race struggles that took place. Don't get me wrong though the Axis side isn't portrayed any better, it portrays all of the Nazi's as being Germans when in actuality, many of those serving in North Western France during this time period were "Ost Regiments", that is Russians, Eastern Europeans, even Indians served in the SS on the Atlantic Wall. As the game is right now having any actual knowledge of history is a hindrance to enjoying the game. I saw a lot of people complaining in pre-release reviews that this game was too similar to Sniper Elite 4, all I can say is that it's a shame that that is not true, If only they had made this a new campaign for SE4 it would have been brilliant, it's not though, it's Sniper Elite 3 with bigger maps, worse aesthetic an any game so far in the series and quite probably the weakest story yet. If this is your first experience with the Sniper Elite series I highly recommend you refund this game and buy Sniper Elite 4 instead.Show moreShow less
