An absolutely disgraceful collection but I did not expect anything more since it was made "internally at SEGA" CONS: Most important - NO integer scaling, meaning all 4 games look just as blurry as Sonic CD 2011. What was the point of finally releasing the 2013 remasters on consoles if they look worse than when they did on mobile? Mission Mode is comprised of bite-sized, generically-designed levels that would make the most amateur platformers blush. I could tell it was made by Sonic Team cuz the mode features grey X-blocks like Forces and they're EVERYWHERE with no slopes in sight Knuckles isn't playable in CD (a primarily exploration-based game). Don't get me started on Amy - a character that's been promoted since the Archie Mega Drive days as part of Team Sonic. Then in Mania Adventures, then in IDW comics, and now here. So you'd think they would finally make her playable? Lol, you want them to make a NEW sprite-sheet (which they did back in CD 2011 for Tails)? You're asking for too much No customizations. After all these years, after fan projects like S1 Forever, S2 Absolute, S3 Complete, S3 A.I.R., OR EVEN Sonic Mania, our boys at SEGA couldn't be bothered to add the most BASIC options between all 4 games like fans do. No peel-out in S3, elemental shields in S1/CD/2, max control, Jam difficulties, can't disable the Drop Dash, no option to use lives/timeouts in Anniversary Mode or collect Tokens in Classic Mode, etc. Island Tour DLC just allows you to zoom-in on each island, not even rotate them. Money well spent. And that "animated characters on island" DLC? All of them are ripped from Gens/Forces Super Sonic isn't in S1. Now you might say "What are you talking about, obviously he isn't". Yeah, umm... except some Japanese promo images showed him in Scrap Brain. So I thought "Oh, so he, alongside a 7th Special Stage are in Anniversary Mode, nice bonus". And he isn't. You can only access him using cheats, just like on mobile. Is this a nitpick? Yeah, but maybe they shouldn't have blatantly lie to consumers, then The "Drop Dash" is a pure lie. What do I mean? It's actually a disguised Spin Dash animation that happens for a split-second? Doesn't sound bad, except the AGES version of S1/S2 natively added it to their ROMs. Oh! And in Origins it BARELY moves you after you execute it. Best part? S1/S2 have a fixed jump arc, so if you try to do this move in those games and jump, you won't be able to control yourself mid-air (think Castlevania) The Museum... god, remember those so-called "never-before seen concept arts" they promised? Well I'm here to tell you there are like 6 of them, everything else are Harmony covers and character sheets. The Video section has none of those cool 90s ads, promo videos or even documentaries, just a few pieces of the Sonic Symphony they threw in at the last hour, Origins' cutscenes and every episode of Mania Adventures (and their respective animatics). Both Normal and Premium sections offer very little content, especially if you pre-ordered the game which gives you a 100 Token bonus, you can literally unlock everything in under 2 hours. Not to mention it's complete silence, no remix of History or anything like that, no feeling of nostalgia. Just cynical, corporate silence as you browse what little they offer. Only ""new"" track here is a remix of Sonic World from Jam that plays everywhere except the Museum. Classy S1/2/CD are straight mobile versions, so they haven't been touched up at all. Meaning the missing rolling SFX in CD hasn't been fixed, and the extended camera is still absent Horrible audio quality. Believe it or not, they REMOVED the remastered OSTs for S1, CD and S2 from mobile. Why? No clue. As for S3&K, y'know... the only new thing here, it isn't given the same treatment so its OST is really muffled, and ON TOP OF THAT, CD's 2 OSTs are super quiet and also in bad quality. How did they screw it up? idk, but it is hilarious Your Score in S3&K resets to 0 if you click the Restart button. This doesn't happen in other games The music DLC (Chaotix, 3D Blast and Spinball) misnamed countless tracks. For example; Chaotix's bad ending theme (Destructive Power) is Door to Summer, while 3D Blast's Invincibility theme is the Menu theme. Incompetent? Very much. Funny? Absolutely No Chaotix island. You might notice how Origins' gallery features stuff from Chaotix, 3D Blast and Spinball, the OSTs from those games they repackaged as DLC at the last minute, as well as the islands from Spinball and 3D Blast in the hub menu and... wait a second... where's the Island of Miracles from Chaotix? You telling me, the island from a game that is the closest to Sonic's gameplay of that era isn't here... but islands from 2 US-made games, one of which is a pinball spin-off made to promote a show that never aired in Japan, are here? Not only is this sorta insulting, I'm like 1000% sure it was supposed to be here as an Options island, they just didn't make a model of it in time, and plastered Options in the Museum of all places Screwed up physics. Due to S3&K here clearly being made on Mania's engine, it had a lot of ramifications on the game's internal logic. Some stuff is cool like all elemental shields function how they did in Mania, making the bubble shield fun to use. Others... because the game now controls exactly like Mania, there are a LOT of collision/physics bugs that weren't present in the OG game CD's ending animation. While the restoration team did really well with remastering the original opening, I... have no idea what happened with the ending. It looks like one of those interpolated anime clips. Worst part? It's sped up by 3x and there are no SFXs in the beginning, so it instantly plays the credits theme. The Gallery also plays it off-sync and it doesn't feature the bad ending version. Actually a joke Even though I'm not one of those people that plays S3 and S&K separately, it's kinda absurd how they initially advertised this collection with those 2 games in mind. Final release? You can't play them separately. Oh well The new S3&K tracks. I don't know what sound chip Jun Senoue (same guy who composed S4EI) used but it sure wasn't a Mega Drive one. Tracks sound muffled, quiet and overall don't fit the game. It's especially insulting to CNZ Act 2, its prototype track is EASILY one of my favorite Sonic tunes... and Jun completely butchered it. They should've asked Yuzo Koshiro to recompose them. But you wanna know THE coolest part? Origins is made on Criware, meaning the audio is encrypted, meaning it'll be really hard to mod music in. Just a neat thing, y'know :) Denuvo. No need to explain, you already know the game runs poorly. Countless stuttering too PROS: Cutscenes look great, but what did you expect from Tyson Hesse and Powerhouse, you knew they'd pull it off with flying colors. However they haven't animated any of the bad endings, meaning if you get one in any of the games, it would still play said game's true ending The restoration group they hired to scan various pieces for the Museum and clean up the CD opening (not the ending) did a really good job The S3&K remaster, despite the collection's flaws, is alright. Nowhere near the level of AIR, which is odd cuz I know Stealth and his crew can do WAY better than this. At least it wasn't done by SEGA Classic games on PC, so your usual "Hope modders will fix it" mentality will continue yet again! You expect SEGA to do all the work? Pfftt, yeah right Notice how all the collection's positives I listed were outsourced to 3rd parties and not done by SEGA? That should tell you how much they care. In the end you're left with: Sonic 1 (the Spin Dash is still present in the so-called Classic mode) Sonic 2 (with a horrible, downright game-breaking Tails AI) Sonic CD (they use leftover UI from the mobile version I kid you not) and Sonic 3&K (with its muffled, MJ-free OST) Happy 31st Anniversary, Sonic. I can't believe I'm still a fan of your franchiseShow moreShow less
Unfortunately they removed some of the original songs and replaced them with beta songs or new songs. You can get the original music back by installing "thedefinitivesonic3ost" from game banana. 1. Open the zip file so the two music files, “Music03_3SK.acb” and “Music03_S3K.awb” are visible. 2. Navigate to your steamapps/common directory. Find the SonicOrigins folder. 3. Navigate to image, x64, raw, and then sound. 4. Replace the music files in the folder with the ones you have in the zip. The other thing I had to fix was latency. The game suffers from a frame or two of delay on button presses. The only way I was able to fix this was by switching the window mode to borderless fullscreen. With those fixes out of the way, this is an amazing game that adds a new coin system, boss rush, mirrored mode, wide screen support, and you can play as all three original characters in any of the games. I was able to do some of this to a degree in the original games but this game makes it so much easier. Get the super uber big pp deluxe version BUT wait for it to go on sale for $25 or less.Show moreShow less
I've never written a comprehensive Steam review for a game, but then again, I've never been so pissed off by a game, either. Sonic Origins is the biggest letdown imaginable. Before I get into that, though, let's talk about the good parts of the game. The new Anniversary Mode lets you play through all four games with infinite lives. It's pretty well-known that lives, as a mechanic, kind of suck. They're a holdover from the era of arcade games, made to squeeze money out of you back then and to squeeze playtime out of you on consoles. Lives are replaced with Coins, which you can use to retry Special Stages or unlock art/music/video content in the new Museum. The cutscenes before and after every game in Anniversary Mode are, likewise, really cool! They clearly had a lot of heart put into them. Tyson Hesse and Powerhouse knocked them out of the park. The new Mirror Mode lets you play each game in reverse, flipping the screen and changing the game from left-to-right to right-to-left. This is a cool new touch that mixes up the gameplay for veteran players. It's neat. The also-new Mission Mode throws you into courses with set objectives. This is essentially identical to Sonic Generations' missions - you have set objectives (time, rings, etc.) and you're ranked based on how well you complete those objectives. This is... fine. That's the end of the good part of Sonic Origins. Now for the bad. Sonic 1, Sonic CD, and Sonic 2 are almost entirely unchanged from their mobile ports (and Steam port, in CD's case), with a few exceptions that I'll get to later. If you bought and played these earlier ports, though, you might notice something strange about Sonic Origins - namely, at launch, Sonic 1 and 2 on mobile devices were both 3$ a pop, and Sonic CD on Steam was 5$ before it was delisted. Origins is 40 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ dollars. If you're being extremely generous and want to bump the other two games' prices up to match CD's and price S3&K similarly, this game should be 20$ maximum. This alone is ridiculous. On top of that, there's a confusing and predatory-feeling bit of DLC that gives you exactly two pieces of meaningful content - 100 Coins (seriously?) and access to harder missions in Mission Mode. Sega's really going out of their way to nickel and dime you on this one. Sega also did a lot of advertising relating to "new playable characters", which is a flat-out lie. Tails and Knuckles have been playable in Sonic 1 since 2013, and Tails has been in CD since 2011. They couldn't even bother adding Knuckles to CD here, which would've been the easiest "new character" to add... but the promotional material and in-game movies focusing on Amy makes me think she's who they wanted people to assume was playable. Every single one of the aforementioned "few exceptions" to the unchanged ports made the games worse overall. Sonic 1 features the addition of the Drop Dash, except you can't turn around in midair after using it and jumping, so you can't chain it the way you can in Mania. Sonic CD has had Sonic and Amy's single, half-second voice lines removed for... some reason; the Drop Dash was added here, too, and it works much closer to Mania's version. CD has also had its entire Steam achievement list nixed in favor of Origins's mediocre "Play the game! Time travel once! Beat Metal Sonic! Beat the game!" ... and that's it. Normally, I'd call this a nitpick, but CD's Steam port from 10 years ago had a better achievement list. Why, Sega. Why. Sonic 2 has Sonic 1's halfassed Drop Dash, as well as at least two minor level layout changes - one in Metropolis 3 that makes a set of spikes borderline unavoidable (seriously!), and one that breaks Wing Fortress's intro. Good job, Sega. Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the most tragic case of all here. Sega contracted Headcannon (of Sonic Mania and Sonic 1+2 Mobile fame) to develop the remaster, which sounds all well and good... until you read Stealth's tweet about how Headcannon was treated during development. S3&K's good features include the Drop Dash (properly implemented this time, likely since Headcannon actually knows how it ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ works), a bunch of additional rotation sprites for objects like the Marble Garden spinners and Carnival Night's barrels, and a few new flashy level transitions that add a lot of polish and heart to the game. Thanks, Headcannon. S3&K's flaws not present in the original game are numerous, to say the least. Its music hasn't been remastered at all; the tracks sound like low-quality playbacks of the Genesis tracks. It bears mentioning that this only stands out so much because the other three games had high-quality remastered tracks. The Special Stage music doesn't speed up to match Sonic's speed like it did in the original game, and the new Super Sonic theme is insufferable to listen to, almost as bad as the original. Actually, none of the new music is good. I'm no Michael Jackson purist, either; I played Sonic 3 A.I.R. with all of the prototype tracks enabled, and they all sounded fantastic there. Jun Senoue is a composer, not an arranger; the tracks he wrote should've been arranged and programmed into the game by someone who's more familiar with Genesis sound synthesis. The tracks that made it into Origins are watered-down, inferior versions of the original, pre-MJ tracks. Miscellaneous annoying differences from the original S3&K include differing in-game physics (hold down when Marble Garden 1 starts and keep it held - the speed cap behaves differently so you fly into a wall, unlike in the original); the end of Act 1 signposts not falling in the same places, so they don't unearth monitors consistently anymore; a vine in Angel Island 2 forcing you to swing into spikes and take damage; an unnecessary vertical screen lock during Marble Garden 2's falling-ceiling section; and the Super transformation animation not halting you in midair, which cancels it in certain circumstances. I wanted to like this. Sonic 3, in particular, is one of my favorite games of all time; as it stands, though, I can't recommend this garbage fire of a "remaster" to anyone. Sega hasn't learned anything from their previous mistakes, and they've now stained Headcannon's reputation by forcing an unfinished product to meet an unneeded deadline. Mania was delayed on PC to add ♥♥♥♥♥♥ DRM back when it released - why couldn't Sega have done the same here to let Headcannon actually finish and polish their game? This is especially insulting given the runaway success of Sonic Mania. Sega didn't touch that game - they published it, sure, but Christian Whitehead, Headcannon, and PagodaWest were the actual developers. Sega themselves can't even handle rereleasing the ports previously released by Christian and Headcannon, let alone developing an actual ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Sonic game on their own, as evidenced by the past few years of blunders. It feels like Sega thought they earned some goodwill with Mania, thought "hey, people will probably pay big money for classic Sonic games even if we put zero effort in!", and released this ♥♥♥♥. Zero disrespect for Headcannon, by the way. Their work on Sonic 1, 2, Mania, and this 3&K port had a lot of love put into them - there's plenty of tiny fixes and details peppered into this port that weren't in the original. God bless you, Headcannon, and ♥♥♥♥ you, Sega. Go get a Sonic CD key online or something to play the superior PC port of that game, and go play Sonic 1 Forever, Sonic 2 Absolute, and Sonic 3 A.I.R. for the good PC versions of those. Don't let Sega scam you out of your money for this. I won't be coming back to Origins unless it gets major patches, whether official or unofficial, and major community mods to boot. What a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.Show moreShow less

The other day my internet went down, so I thought I'd make the most of it and play some old sonic games I'd just purchased. Only to get hit with an error message asking me to "Go online" before I was able to play the 30 year old, single-player game I just purchased for $44.99 and some tax. Very cool idea. Played the new Ninja Turtles instead since they allow you to play the game you bought from them.Show moreShow less
✅️ New sprite work ✅️ 4:3 widescreen ✅️ Mission mode ✅️ Quality of life improvements ✅️ Gameplay still holds up ❌️ Butchered Sonic 3 protype tracks ❌️ £30+ way too expensive ❌️ Needed a few more tweaks (Sonic 3 level select for other games, no Knuckles for CD etc).Show moreShow less
Sad to say this but, in its current state, I cannot recommend Sonic Origins: - The keyboard controls are unbelievably bad, I just can't believe it, even after checking its bindings on the options menu, on Sonic 3 at least I CANNOT CONTROL WITH THE ARROWS! - Graphics aren't great, I wanted the Sonic 3 remake with the good HD Christian Whitehead mobile remakes graphics, but this looks blurry, I wouldn't think this is a remake, but the game resized to widescreen. Sonic 3 AIR looks better. - Music at least on Sonic 3 is bad, doesn't sound remastered, the volume is low and it doesn't sound nice like the Sonic 3 AIR remastered soundtrack option. EDIT: I asked for a refund with this note left: This game isn't what we've been promised: Atrocious keyboard controls, blurry/non-HD remastered graphics and badly remastered music or plainly not remastered. This kind of basic issues only can happen if this game wasn't made with love, they had to know at least about the terrible keyboard controls, and even if it were easy to fix, they still released it. And it is clear why: Christian Whitehead didn't work on this, SEGA did.Show moreShow less

Sigh...After Mania was such a smash hit, I was hoping for Origins to be an utter slam dunk as well. I had a lot of hype going into this. The CW versions of Sonic 1 and 2 on PC, finally. Sonic 3 getting the same treatment FINALLY after Whitehead was denied doing so a decade ago, fancy new intro/outro animations for every single game to provide context for each game's story and a bunch of neat little extras, such as concept art, animatics, extra songs, etc. All of that sounded great, even if I think the price for it is way, way too steep for games that are nearing 3 decades in age. But where does it crumble apart? Behind the scenes is where it crumbles apart. Playing any game in Origins, you can immediately tell corners were cut. The physics, while remarkably close to the original games, still feel slightly off. For example, in Sonic 3's Launch Base Zone, you can't enter the pods if you're standing right next to them because your jump is just ever slightly too high. In Sonic 2, the Aquatic Ruin boss fight becomes weirdly difficult due to the aspect ratio, making it feel more like an oversight. In Sonic 1's Green Hill Zone boss fight, you can effectively cheese the boss by standing under the platforms (which wasn't possible in the original, you still had to dodge). The one thing that gets me though, is the music. Yes, I'm partially talking about the songs in Sonic 3, but I just mean the quality of the songs overall. Again, launching any game aside from CD, you can just hear the compression and crunch of every song. The quality of the songs is astoundingly low quality. It feels like they're using heavily compressed 128 kbps YouTube rips for every single song, and that's genuinely a shame. You don't need to be an audiophile either to hear the low quality, you can just immediately notice it as soon as it transitions from the Origins menu to the game. And of course, Sonic 3's changed music. Contrary to what others may think, I don't hate the replaced tracks. And if you don't know - they replaced the songs with compositions from Sonic 3's November 1993 prototype. Except, for some reason, they based the songs off of the MIDI compositions from the S&K collection on 1997. Zones like Ice Cap and Launch Base sound fine, if anything I think they genuinely recomposed the 1993 proto. ver of Ice Cap and cleaned it up, and it sounds legitimately wonderful, but Carnival Night Zone...god, it sounds awful. And then Sonic 3's Super Sonic theme they added. It's...awful. It sounds like something ripped out of Sonic 4. The baffling bit? They included the Unused Theme in the game's Museum Mode for Sonic 3's soundtrack. Why...couldn't they just...use that? It's just baffling. They can include it in the collection but apparently not use it in the game? I don't wanna keep going. Sonic Origins is a disappointment. I pre-ordered the Digital Deluxe edition by selling my CS:GO knife to buy it, and honestly - I kinda want my knife back now. The animation work done here is incredible and the extras they gave in the game are nice, but none of it makes up for what feels like shoddy ports of mobile games, poor audio quality and just overall lack of polish. I read some behind the scenes stuff on Origins' development, including this tweet by Stealth on Twitter and it just saddens me how Sega continues to mistreat its developers and its beloved properties. Shame on you, Sega. Shame on you.Show moreShow less
