To all the people leaving negative reviews because of either building decay over time, you can turn that off in advance settings, or having to run back to your death box you can also turn that off in advance settings i know asking the average gamer to read is a lot but please do try as indie studios dont want to have to call you an idiot for not doing so, games awesome.Show moreShow less
So let's start with the good because there's a lot! - building a tribe is fun - quality of items adds depth - combat is really fun - world is expansive - it's gorgeous - got all the ingredients for a great game - the traits on the tribals is really cool - the masteries, masks, the level of skills, the leveling of the character are all very nice to see - minor cons - there's a bazillion bugs (which can all be forgiven because this is actually early access) - the building system needs more work (this also feels like an early access problem) bigger cons - tedious death loops - tedious tribal recruitment (you have to recruit them to know if they're worth recruiting! Not to mention this all takes quite a while for each one) - early game (first 40 hours) transportation issues - early diminishing returns on leveling. Considering how little of a difference each level makes, and even in their sum of all of them... this needs to actually be looked at. - the ultra uber mega con (and the reason for the thumbs down): - gate keeping, particularly on the character you start with. you're capped at 50 which is actually less than half of what's possible. This makes the game super grindy, super painful, super boring. They gate kept progression for every skill, all masteries above level 50. Their intention is for you to mask tribals and play as them. The problem is, they die.. really FAST! So you lose everything associated that tribal and you have to go and recruit another one (Please guys, my time is not infinite). (I can already hear it from the the 7.3% that's made it this far.. my achievement told me this :D ), "but wait, you just need to go to the *spoiler*, then fight the *spoiler*, grab the *spoiler*, grab the other *spoilers*, the go to the *spoiler*, then fight the *spoiler*, then take that and unlock the *spoiler*... etc etc etc. this ability should not be gate kept like this. This is a core game play mechanic and it needs to appear much earlier in the game to avoid stalling. It's a very interesting game, but until they fix that, this remains a thumbs down. That gate keeping shenanigans doesn't get to hide behind "early access". That's just poor design.Show moreShow less
I like this game. It has the potential for hundreds, or even thousands, of hours of game play. If I had to pick one thing that annoys me, it's when any company announces a "Free DLC" before their game is even out of beta (Early Access). Just release it as a normal update and stop acting like you're giving us something for free. We gave you our money to help you beta test your game, I don't need "free stuff" to recommend your game to others, I just need you to continuously improve your game, squash bugs in a timely manner, and move your game towards no longer being Early Access.Show moreShow less
This game was really fun for a short period. They recently added server transfers and it has ruined the game. Last night a group of 15+ people came in and wiped the whole server. They were on the top tier gear and rides and everything. Totally just ruined this game. They sent a message to the whole server basically saying we'd have to "pay up" to stop getting raided.Show moreShow less
From a singleplayer perspective (which is how I play) this has always been a cut above from a survival game standpoint. There are obvious similarities to Conan/Dune/etc., but it just feels so much more satisfying to base/tribe build here - and, like subnautica, it just ends up feeling better than its peers. The new DLC is enormous and absolutely rules so far. This is an easy recommend for me - more than worth its price. Edit: Since this got some attention, i'll add a few things that I have really appreciated. First, for the single player experience is the ability to modify the game world settings at any point. Is crafting taking too long? change it. Are your pets taking forever to reach adulthood? change it. Does fighting feel too easy? adjust it. There are like a hundred sliders that you can use to adjust your game experience in different ways that make playing without a group not only tenable but perfect for a solo player at any stage in the game process. Second, I spend a lot of time base building in games - I really enjoy it. Games like this and subnautica and dune all got a lot of attention from me just because of that. So I would put this in almost an S tier for a couple of reasons. 1. Mechanics - I really like them - You have a large circle around your bonfire (or centerpiece for each base) that goes to the sides and up into the sky and can build within those limits; if i recall my old playthroughs, that circle may get bigger as your bonfire gets more advanced. But the variety of pieces, and the need to build into the land (or, conversely to find an area that is super flat if thats your thing), has provided countless hours of entertainment for me - as you weigh such things as proximity to dangerous creatures, proximity to enemy bases (for capturing future tribesmen/women), and proximity to water and natural resources. 2. Purpose - Bases make meaningful differences in the game. Once you start building up your tribe, youll need bases in whatever zone you're in to craft (of course) but you can also setup pretty fun tribe automation for building out items that you need while you're off exploring, defending your base, and so forth. So the bases are actually built into the game mechanics in a number of fun ways (automation, raids, crafting and so forth). 3. Aesthetics - They look super cool, imo. So if this is your thing, as it is mine, I would for sure give the game a shot.Show moreShow less
While the mechanics are intriguing in this game and the technology and base building are really well done, I cannot recommend this game at this time. Firstly, I feel mislead. From the info on this page and the reviews and gameplay I had seen, I thought this was going to be a great game where you create a tribal leader and amass a tribe with the neat mechanic of being able to play as any member of your tribe. It seemed great. Unlike most survival games, I don't have to master every skill with one character, I can spread the specializations out among my tribe. Sadly, this isn't true. Your original character that you customize and create is the weakest character in the game. His skills are all capped lower than the worst skill of any later tribesman you recruit. After the starting area, he's about useless apart from not being able to be killed permanently... and to make matters worse, when you are playing as another member of your tribe he does NOTHING. He just sits on the ground and does not contribute to the tribe unless you are actively playing him. The tribesman system is worse than the Diablo-style loot grind. The tribesmen have quality levels (from common to legendary) but their stats are completely random (but their lowest caps are still higher than your original character) where you can find common tribesmen with better skills than legendary ones. Overall, filling your tribe is like questing for loot... you are constantly encouraged to discard tribesmen for shiny new ones to keep looking for the best. All the time you spend trying to improve a tribesman is wasted when you find a new one with better skill caps/perks. There's no real progress reward for effort spent... you currently can't really improve a tribesman beyond the potential you see when you initially recruit them... you have to discard them for a better one to really improve. RNG seriously trumps effort. You can spend a lot of time improving the weapon skill of a particular tribesman and you aren't guaranteed to unlock the mastery ability for certain skill milestones (for example, you can unlock a new ability at level 60 in spears... but there's only a CHANCE it will unlock when you get to that skill level) further encouraging you to discard that tribesman and find another if they don't get the abilities you want to use. Until you progress past a few bosses, every tribesman you recruit suffers perma-death. You have to progress to have the ability to revive a few of your tribesmen (you have a small list of ones you can record for revival should they die) and have to enable an option for them to keep their current skill levels upon revival, otherwise they default to level they were at when you first recruited them. I was hoping for a game where I build a tribe from nothing to a powerful force through effort... instead I found a game where the original character basically sits uselessly at the slot machine and I waste time hoping to find the random stats I want on the next pull of the lever. The heavy RNG and lack of reward for spending effort on a tribesman truly overshadows the other wonderful systems which this game has (the base building, technology, and mask abilities).Show moreShow less
You'll play because it reminds you of Conan Exiles, ARK: Survival Evolved and Palworld (maybe even Bellwright and Enshrouded). You'll keep playing because it turns out that's a pretty fun combo. After all, when's the last time you played a game other than Mortal Kombat where you can throw a spear into an enemy and then yell "GET OVER HERE!" while yanking them back toward you? Thoughts after 30 Hours If you're a veteran of the genre, you certainly have enough settings and configurations at your fingertips to tailor your experience in Soulmask to fit your needs and playstyle. So no need to really dwell on a lot of the "game is like a second job" concerns being cherrypicked and hyperbolically regurgitated in some of the feedback you might see on the game. The enemies in Soulmask have very respectable AI for an open world survival crafting game. Enemies don't just beeline toward you and dogpile like in Bellwright and move around and/or rush you a bit more aggressively than you see in Enshrouded. Does have "Raids" as I've had my base periodically attacked by spawns of both human and animal enemies. I'll need to experience these a little more to see if they get any more in depth than just spawning X number of aggressive enemies near a bonfire at an unknown interval. Unfortunately you don't get a warning like you do in games like 7 Days to Die or Bellwright. So far every time this has happened I wasn't actually at a bonfire and only knew because of the "World Message" in the bottom left pane of the UI. Combat is a step up from Enshrouded, as the player has the freedom to change the direction of their attacks in between combo attacks and can cancel attacks into a dodge roll when necessary. This allows the player great flexibility when needing to dance around enemies or dip out of situations that get dangerous unexpectedly (i.e. getting jumped by reinforcements while you're inside a Tribal base). One of the things I particularly like about combat with non-boss enemies, is that they have the same moveset as you based on the weapon used (which includes the ability to parry block and execute!). Enemies will also switch from ranged to melee depending on how well they can keep away from you. Even mini-bosses have soft "phases" where they will primarily use melee or ranged attacks to mix things up. In addition, most enemies won't just stand there and take punishment, they'll hop back or roll to the side and then reposition before attacking again. Crafting and automation might not have the depth of a Factorio or Satsifactory, but it knocks it out of the park when compared to other 3rd person open world survival crafting games. There's a wide variety of raw materials, refined resources and other intermediate products to be crafted and worn or consumed in order to help the player progress. Just about anything the player could choose to harvest or craft can instead be assigned to a tribesman to do. This leaves the player time to focus on other activities. It may take some getting used to in order to understand exactly how to queue up commands and orders, but it's certainly worth the effort in the end. Resource nodes and enemy camps respawn frequently, which allows the player to "farm" components for upgrading their mask as well as the loot from camp chests and human enemies. Not to mention the near endless supply of potential tribesman. So despite the preliminary kneejerk negativity you'll read or hear about the game, as a fan of the genre you owe it to yourself to give it a try and see for yourself. There's a good chance you'll be pleasantly surprised by the experience.Show moreShow less
It has went into full release with a ton of bugs and no polish. The game play is not intuitive at all, some of the help screenshots are only in chinese, the new annoying AI handhold thing has no sound and its text pops up and off very quickly so its of new use at all. This game had a lot of potential but i dont think the devs ever had a clear idea of what they wanted this game to be so they tried a handful of things and only half finished any of them.Show moreShow less
I really do enjoy this game . The Good : AI system is top notch . Fighting some npcs almost feels like your fighting players , almost . Wildlife can be deadly . Anacondas as well will 1 shot coil you up and swallow you while leaving a bulge in its belly . Rare function ! Still looking into all the other immersions in wildlife atm . Gear starts to wear and tear over time as your durability gets low . Rain effects are very satisfying . Makes me feel like I cannot get away from thunderstorms even in a game ! Love the swimming mechanics and the ability to use a melee underwater . Oh and you can punch the water . Yeah that's right nothing more satisfying than punching water to cool off from being pwned by bush dogs ! The sound effect of punching water is satisfying and great anger management ! Storage is very well done and is how I wish it was in every game ! Game is running very smooth for a Early access game . Running just a simple 3080 in 4k on mostly maxed settings and its very much smooth while my Husband is running 1 grade lower than me and he is running just as smooth . The game is well optimized for us at least . This one is for all you male players out there . Nice big jiggle breast . A little too much to me to the point its more a fetish than realistic but I everyone has their fetishes so Many males will love this feature ! What matters is pleasing the majority of gamer's so I support it ! Combat is really fun ! I love the way combat feels, Even have Kill finishers or high damage animation attacks . Too all you scorpion lovers you can harpoon npcs while saying Get over here ! Stealth and Sound mechanics are a really nice touch ! I love how its easier for npcs to spot you in the day and at night if you are using a light source or near another player with a light source the npcs can spot you easier . Sound and Stealth is a great touch for a game like this ! Glad they put Sound and Stealth functions in this game . Stealth back stab animations are a thing ! Hunting is Very nice . Depending on how many times you hit wildlife or how fast you kill it will vary on the outcome you get from it . I know that there is a poor , Good , Decent and Excellent kill in terms of how you take out your kill . I think this impacts the outcome and Experience towards your hunting rank . Mixed Thoughts : Character creation is very limited at the moment . Made up of preset heads and hair styles I would like to see more of . Height and weight sliders which is nice ! Breast sliders for females . I think that males and females stance is very much the same . It would be nice to see improvement here . Progressing is a heavy grind unless you Join someones custom and private server . The game can be a high Chore ONLY if your running default settings . Game is locked in third person which is not a bugger for me but some might feel a bit off due to the fact there is no FOV setting . The Bad : Profanity chat is bad ! Words Like , Donkey , Information , Dog and a ENTIRE word section is filtered out as profanity . This very much needs work ! I very much prefer discord over chatting but not everyone is in discord . I might update this Review as I play and experience more ! So far this is my review based off 37.9 hours worth of play time and I feel I only scratched the surface . I am sure I left out a few bits but then again I am just doing swift thinking on what I have experienced . All and all the game is Way worth it to me . There is not a moment I have felt i was not enjoying myself within this world . Hope this Review helps !Show moreShow less
This game has a lot of potential, it does a lot of things well, but it is absolutely not worth it at the moment. Only buy this if it goes below 15$, anything above that is a scam. let's start with the good: The aesthetic and theme are truly new and refreshing. The maps look great and unique, and fun to run around in. The concept of Masks that transform you and do different things depending on what you need is fun. The fact that you can build a flying base and fly around is super fun. The NPC qualities and skills is a fun twist on recruiting and the potential for automation is great. Now on to the negatives: First of all, the blatant misinformation. This game decided to release to 1.0, except the game is NOT complete. The original map is, but the DLC they're selling with it ? You can't even finish it, the game tells you halfway through that the content is not available and will be added in a future update. Second, the polish. This game is extremely rough around the edges. Animations feel sluggish and unresponsive, the transformations take 5 FULL SECONDS to finish. So every time you wanna use a mask, you're just gonna sit there and watch the same animation happen over and over and over. Not to mention the abysmal performance. The vast majority of the time I'm not even breaking 50 FPS, and I have a pretty decent rig. Third is balance. This game's balance is all over the place. Even just a boar will take 75% of your health even if you're fully geared up. I have my singleplayer world set to HALF damage on all mobs and NPCs, and I'll routinely get chunked for 60% of my HP while I am WAY OVERGEARED. Fourth is NPC automation and pathing. The tribesmen you recruit have 0 idea how to navigate if there's more than one person going somewhere. If there's a chest and a door, all the tribesmen will just sit at the door walking at each other and get stuck. Same thing with stairs, multiple floors, all the time. There's also no way to tell NPCs what to prioritize. You tell them what to craft, but you can't tell them what they should craft first, they just decide on their own and you can't do anything about it. Fifth is building/ship building. This game has the most annoying building system I've ever seen. Want to place a wall on a foundation ? Watch it flicker between 5 different locations while you move the mouse 1 pixel at a time. Also the whole "supporting" system is so incredibly frustrating. I couldn't even build a pyramid in my singleplayer world without slapping pillars everywhere and ruining the aesthetic. And you can't even disable in in singleplayer. And last is ship movement/controls. Ships can go forward as fast as 30m/s, but up and down ? Best you can do is 3m/s. So you just sit there minutes at a time waiting to go up and down. Not to mention that the movement itself is so stiff and boring. They could have done so much with this, but currently the ship just goes forwards, back, up and down in the most linear and boring way. This game has a lot of potentional, but the fact that this was released to 1.0 as a full game when it's such a long way from done is just an insult to players. If this is anymore than 15$, do NOT BUY IT. Addendum: To address some of the points people made in the comments: First, the DLC is free for a limited time (only for the 1.0 release of the game, after that the DLC is paid). Second, the game pushes you into playing the DLC first, which is incomplete (When starting a new game it highlights the DLC instead of the original map and has text inviting you to play it first). Third, tribesmen only prioritize items if they're in a limited queue (you tell a tribesman to craft 10 of something for example). If you ask them to keep a certain amount of stock, all priority goes out the window and you can't tell them what to craft first, and you end up with a lot of bottlenecks.Show moreShow less
