I get what the developers are going for here, and I buy the vision, but man, this game is just not it right now. To me this feels like a 3D action version of something like Fear & Hunger, where it's very difficult and progress is incremental. Unfortunately, while the game is indeed difficult and progress is slow, Spark in the Dark has basically nothing else going for it. Some of that can be attributed to early access, no doubt, but I fear that some of it is just... the game. Easily fixable (though who knows if they'll do it) is that the game systems are not explained at all, nor are controls. As an example, repair and potion usage are not intuitive. Why can't I use a grindstone on my damaged axe? Do potions ever get consumed or are they infinite use? Less fixable is combat, which is, in a word, plodding. You either use an extremely slow heavy weapon and kill enemies in a (somewhat) reasonable amount of hits, or you use a relatively fast weapon and kill enemies in a grueling number of hits. Neither is fun. Other aspects of the game are just really annoying: you'll occasionally step on a green spider, I guess, which poisons you. I've never actually laid eyes on a green spider, I just know that every now and then I get poisoned for no apparent reason, and I guess there was a tiny spider on the ground I stepped on. What happens when you do that? You run back to a lantern. Most of the game is dark, but you'll start to lose life if you're away from a lantern for too long. So what do you after you explore for awhile? Run back to a lantern. Fight an enemy of any sort and take damage? Back to a lantern. All of this is slow and not at all interesting or fun. A game that is punishingly hard and that forces slow progress needs something to drive you forward. There needs to be a reason that you keep pushing forward through the same content again and again. To that end: Is the gameplay in Spark in the Dark fun enough to keep you playing? Hard no: this game is not fun to play. Is the loot cool? No, everything I've seen has been generic, and given the game's systems, I don't see that changing. Is exploration interesting? Didn't get too far, admittedly, but nothing I saw made me want to see more; just a generic dungeon with grey walls and a grey floor. Nothing imaginative, interesting, or unique. Is the writing compelling - plot, dialogue, lore? I see no evidence that the first two exist, and the third is beyond sparse and not at all unique or interesting. After my tenth death or so and corresponding tenth go at repeated content, I asked myself why I was still playing the game. The answer, unfortunately, is that there's no reason to keep playing it. It's not fun to play on its own, and it has neither lore nor interesting environments to drive me forward. Hopefully they figure out a way to hammer this into something compelling eventually, but right now, Spark in the Dark is not worth my time. I doubt it's worth yours either.Show moreShow less
Game is fantastic, hardcore, dark, punishing. I hope the devs dont lose the vision trying to please everyone, I love it!Show moreShow less
I am really disappointed to have to make this review. I am a huge fan of hardcore, slow paced games, but this game has a lot of problems. The camera feels sickening to play with for more than 15 minutes. This game has no in game options to remove camera shake/enhance smoothing to prevent motion sickness which is my main reason for refunding the game. However, this game has way more issues than simple accessibility. The games concept is really cool, but the execution is egregious. Spark In The Dark is one of the worst feeling games I have ever played. In this game every action matters, but every action feels horrible to perform. The game desperately needs more combative options than Action1 -> Action2 repeat, It's boring. The exploration aspect of the game with using your lamps with limited time usage to explore further into the dungeon is very enjoyable. The problem is the combat. You could remove the combat from this game, and it would have little to no impact for the overall feel of the game. Let that sink in. A combat oriented game could have its combat system completely removed, and it would have a positive effect on the overall experience of the game. I would not recommend this game to the anyone.Show moreShow less
what waiting 14 years for exanima to be released does to a mofo lol for real, it already has almost everything that made exanima good - art, gaymplay, difficulty, the whole "attrition" vibes ye, production value is not as high - maybe there are some jank animations, maybe assets are not as cool as exanimas, and its running on unity instead of some custom ultra high quality, overengineered, super robust physics-based engine, but hey - tis gonna be feature complete and will release before exanima still lol imo, the demo alone was well worth my regional price ZShow moreShow less
Not a fan. Clunky unforgiving combat. Can't easily see / highlight / select items on the ground to loot. Take note of the word hardcore in the description. Even on the easiest setting it is still hardcore. Also, defaulted to controller settings even though I had no controller on and it does not support Xbox controllers (which I have) for some reason so it did not work even when I turned my controller on (as I assumed this game expected a controller). Had to go into settings and change to mouse/keyboard. Very weird. Refunded.Show moreShow less
Stupidly hard game. However, insanely entertaining and it will absolutely suck you into the darkness. I have a lot of hours into it, and I am just now approaching clearing the first floor. Buy it, play it, get really (really) pissed off at spiders, get slaughtered and dive right back in. Do it!Show moreShow less
The game is good, but it could use some mechanics that create a sense of progression inside the dungeon, like being able to refill your lantern at rest spots. Something similar to Estus Flasks would also be welcome — potions are way too slow to use, to the point where they’re basically unusable in combat. But the main issue is the enemy variety. It doesn’t even feel like a dungeon, it feels like a spider cave. Seriously, it goes like this: spider spider spider spider spider spider spider spider spider spider spider zombie spider spider etc... By the time you finally find a zombie, you don’t even want to kill it anymore — you want to befriend it, because you know you won’t see another non-spider enemy for a long time.Show moreShow less
This game is incredibly frustrating and its impossible to see in the dark, this is exactly what I was looking for thank you Stellar Fish, looking forward to the content updates in the future.Show moreShow less
The game tries to combine aspects of DS1, diablo1 and amnesia the dark descent, but fails to meet any benchmark set by these games. Pros: -Decent immersion -the nightmares are cool -Lore seems interesting -The armour and weapon aesthetics are well-done. Cons: -unacceptably janky -1 dimensional tedious combat -poison is completely broken -stepping on the green spiders is basically impossible to avoid and every time you do.... you have to run all the way back to a light source so you don't die from poison... After 50 greenspiders, this just gets tedious and ruins the game -The gameplay has basically no depth -The character presets are very silly and I don't appreciate being rail-roaded.Show moreShow less
