Its really great RTS. -the story looks interesting -the AI is very smart and challenging -the factions are pretty good balanced -the game does offer a lot of possible strategies -the economy works very well, you can properly build up your base and army its just really awesome to have such great and competent developer, who does listen to feedback and made the best RTS of 2017.Show moreShow less

I rate this game $30/$50. I know I gave this a thumbs-up, but that's because there's no option besides "Yes" or "No" for recommendations. I have ~103 hours logged onto this game, but a good chunk of those hours were because my computer was left on at the menu screen or something; the game does not last that long. My critique: Music: 10/10. Triumphant and bombastic when it needs to be, slow and serene when it needs to be; it's always fitting. Story: 8/10. The main reason I kept playing the game for so long. It was compelling enough for me to continue playing but wasn't exactly A++ material. It has quite a few interesting takes on the traditional fantasy tropes and stereotypes as well. The story does change a little bit throughout the game - that is, it's not like you know everything from the get-go... there's always new developments and whatnot to keep it interesting. Voice Acting and Dialogue: 7/10. The majority of the characters have very fitting voices. There are a few that stand out and really make you want them to shut up. I'm also giving it a lower score because the game is RIDDLED with grammatical errors and inconsistencies. - At some points, I've noticed some voice actors will refer to person X, then the same voice actor will start pronouncing person X differently half-way through the game. - The text on screen often does not match what the voice actor is saying, forcing you to either read the text super-fast to catch up to where the voice actor is in the script because they omitted a portion of what's on screen, or force you to pause reading the text until the voice actor catches up to what's on the screen because they're adding something extra. Gameplay: I honestly have no idea what to say about the gameplay. It's a big, big, big, mixed bag of mixed results. Incoming wall of text for each aspect of the gameplay: THE RTS ELEMENT: The game boasts that it has "the perfect blend of RPG and RTS". This is not true one bit. - The game defaults to overworld walking and exploration Diablo 3-style. The game throws you head-first into an RTS-style game at certain checkpoints during main quests. - You can only build outposts wherever the game designates. You can only construct your buildings in pre-designated "sectors" around these outposts. This is against the ideals of any RTS game I have ever played where you can go wherever you want and construct whatever buildings you want at any location. Not to mention, sometimes you're not able to build outposts throughout the entire map. Sometimes, you're restricted to outposts which cover only a portion of the map so you can't expand as far as you would like to. - Once you destroy the enemy's HQ you lose control of all your troops and buildings as they are no longer needed. After all, you blew up their HQ. But yeah, you can sit there and watch your workers continue to gather resources looking pretty and whatnot. - The enemy AI has no idea what it wants to do. What it does decide to do, it does so with the coordination of an infant child. For the majority of the maps in the game, they make little to no attempt to expand, giving you little challenge. Conversely, if you spend too much time expanding even after you've created a force strong enough to wipe out their HQ, you are literally wasting your time... that is, unless you enjoy expanding and watching your resources pile up into huge numbers. - The enemy AI will sporadically send out a single soldier or a single handful of soldiers to different outposts for no reason. My base has 5,000 HP? That Arsonist of theirs deals 8 damage? Better be prepared to hear "Your base is under attack!" for the next twenty minutes unless you send someone back to kill him. - The RTS is unneccessary beyond the fourth or fifth map once your hero party is strong on their own. Once I progressed to the fifth map, whenever the game threw me into RTS mode, I literally ignored the well-being of my own buildings, never assigned workers, and never built units. I literally sent my hero party of four head-first into the enemy base and demolished their HQ, which, by the way, promptly kills and despawns all enemy units and buildings on the map. - My friend said it best: "The RTS is more of a mini-game than anything." I could not have said it better. - The walking... oh my God, the WALKING in this game sometimes. There are some points in the game where you're just spending most of your time walking. I eventually unlocked a passive aura that made my main character and everyone around him run faster. I immediately chugged a potion to reallocate skill tree points to get it because sometimes it's that bad. THE RPG ELEMENT: I had little to no issues with the RPG elements in this game. - The game boasts a "complex and rich" system. This is totally untrue marketing/advertising gibberish. You have Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Wisdom, and Intelligence. Everybody who's ever played an RPG before knows what those do. You get a single point to put into one of those abilities every other level. - The skill trees are also just as simple. If you've ever seen a skill tree in any other RPG before, you'll be familiar with this one. Put a point here, put a point there, and that's it. - Your characters can only have three 'present' abilities at a time. Oh, you have more than three abilities/auras that you would like to use at a time? Gotta constantly click this one button or button on your keyboard that flips through different loadouts mid-fight, which is really annoying. - When you create your character, you choose 3 skill trees that will be available to your character (and permanent) for the rest of the game. As far as I know, you can't view these trees to see if you like them ahead of time. WEAPONS AND ARMOR: The armor in this game is fine for the most part. There isn't a huge amount of variety in them, but it's there. As for the weapons... it just makes me mad. Maybe I couldn't figure it out and somebody else can help me out here, but to me, it's a very broken system. What I type next is what I have found after drinking close to 30 potions that allow you to reallocate skill tree points and attributes for my own testing. - The majority of weapons and armor in this game are sidegrades rather than upgrades. - Dual-wielding will always deal less damage than 2-handing a heavy weapon. - STR weapons will always outclass DEX weapons. I'm not joking, I had all my DEX characters chug potions so I can make them spec into STR instead of DEX. Went from dealing 120 DPS to anywhere between 280-400 DPS. It's insane. - The damage ratings on the weapons hit a plateau very early on the game. You'll find weapons that deal something close to 5 DPS, then, 6 DPS, then 7.5-8 DPS, then 9 DPS, then 10 DPS... then a long period of time before you find any that deal 12-13 DPS... than at one point you find a STR weapon called "Sledgehammer" that deals 21 DPS. What the ♥♥♥♥? Why is there such a huge gap in the quality of the weapons? - Artifact weapons are a thing in this game. You can do a little treasure hunting and find the pieces to armor/weapons scattered throughout the map. Find all the pieces, put them all together, and bam, you got yourself an artifact. A disappointing number of artifact weapons are simple 1-handed weapons (going back to my point about these being strictly worse than 2-handers) with 9 DPS that scale with DEX and no bonus stats on it whatsoever. Like, what's the difference between this and a common weapon I can buy off a vendor? Make up your mind, devs. - A lot of weapons will say "Deal additional Fire/Ice/Black/White/Etc. Damage"... OK... any more info would have been nice. I don't know if I should have this amulet equipped that gives me extra health or the one that gives me "extra ice damage". Same thing with weapons... if I had two weapons that dealt the same damage but one did "extra fire damage" and the other had a chance to bleed... I have no frame of reference for the differences in damage.Show moreShow less

Could have been a good game, but warning for those looking for coop: Your coop characters are NOT persistent. If you jump in to play with a friend or family member (as my wife and I do) you can only play one of the temporary NPCs from the host's storyline. You cannot bring your own main character in. We only learned this after getting through the prologue, which can take some time and put you past the Steam refund time. If playing your own characters through the co-op multiplayer campaign is important to you, keep this in mind. Our personal experience was disappointingly negative because of this, but otherwise the game appears quite polished. The graphics are beautiful, the skill selection approach in combat gives control without taking away the tension, the RTS elements are nice.Show moreShow less
I write this review as a player that completed the game, thoroughly explored it, and who has gotten achievements that only 3.2% of players have gotten. In short, I write this as someone who gave this game a fair try. Before I begin to lay out the flaws of this game, let me say: This game had potential! It could have been great! It was like Age of Mythology meets Fate. If you know anything about gaming then you should know what both of those games are, and why this combination could have been amazing. The only credit that I can give to this game is that the vision was great and, perhaps, with time they might be able to salvage the horrid mess into a masterpiece. Let me just say, as so many other reviewers have said, BUGS!! Bugs galore! I didn't meet one that made it where I couldn't beat the game, but I encountered so many of them along the way it was pathetic. When the best items in the game are denied to you because your game is bugged it really ticks you off... The real flaw in this game, however, isn't that it had bugs. A lot of great games had bugs. We get over it. But what you can't get over is terrible game mechanics. The civilization system is bad, really bad. And I say this as someone who struggled through the growing pains of the Total War series. But this is just really confusing and annoying. Once you get the hang of it, it isn't really difficult. But it is hard to learn. It's not intuitive. It is needlessly complex, boring, and (more than anything) totally irrelevant. Which brings me to my next point. The hero system makes your civilization totally unnecessary. Tahar, if you upgrade him correctly, is a mob wiping, building demolishing, mage slaying, monster. Get him in a suit of Berserker's armor, upgrade his dual wielding and give him some mid level weapons and watch him go. Using your heroes, upgraded and equipped properly, and a bit of good tactics you can steam roll anything, everything. Your civilization becomes a distraction (and a liability) from the real point of the game, which is to get Tahar and his team to destroy everything on the map. But, if you choose to restrain yourself in your use of heroes, or if you haven't upgraded them well, then you find yourself in a tricky spot. Barracks units are totally worthless and stand no chance, but advanced units are way to powerful... For example, a human recruit group (fully upgraded) is nothing more than a waste of 3 food, but a group of Keepers is an overpowered battle tank squad. Need to destroy the enemy? Just train a few Keepers and you can defeat anything that is thrown at you. The trick is, you have to survive long enough to get you Keepers trained, which you can't do (or can barely do) if you are relying on Recruits. I won't belabor these points. Everyone knows how bugged this game is, and anyone who plays it can see how terrible the game mechanics and game balance is. What is a blessing in disguise is that this game is incredibly short. Oh, the creators padded it with A LOT of atrocious dialogue (more will be said on that), monotonous quests, tons of run around, and lame repeats of maps, but the game is still short. If you waste your time trying to complete bugged out side quests (like Windhall Way) to make sure that your heroes have every good thing they can get then the game seems a lot longer, but not in a good way. I doubt the developers will ever read this, but I'd just like to say, "There is more to the World map than The Eye! I do not want to spend the whole game going back to the same stupid swamp map that you put minor changes on! Don't be so cheap and so lazy, make a new damn map!" But hey, maybe you enjoy spending time running back and forth over the exact same you played before, if so then this is the game for you! As for the story line? Bland, boring, predictable. Like someone ripped off Eragon: betrayer's child falls in love with aloof elf chick, wields extraordinary magic for a human, bad guys persecute magic users, blah blah blah... And, to make it worse, each character has a "dramatic" backstory which is told through unconvincing conversations (where the text doesn't match the spoken word). But don't worry, the developers worked really hard to tie in every boring, tired, politically correct theme that they could think of to make your heroes back stories as lame as can be. We have the gay power hungry dwarf, the aloof elf woman who has been a victim of prejudice, the arrogant entitled brutal marshal, etc, etc, etc. Point is: the main storyline couldn't cut it, so they padded it with cheap side stories that really have nothing to do with anything... I could say more, I could comment about how bad the movement and view control system was, that the music was annoying, the graphics weren't nearly as good as they should have been, the load times were ENDLESS!! But I've wasted to much time playing this game, and to much time writing this review on it. Simple message to everyone: This game *LOOKS* like it could be REALLY GOOD, but that just makes how bad it actually is even worse! Don't waste your time or your money on it!!!Show moreShow less

I am not normally one to write game reviews. I'm content enough to shrug off games that I did not enjoy, and I'm forgiving enough to not criticize developers for most kinds of errors. I really cannot stay silent here however. This game has issues with game balance, QoL, and other minor annoyances. I honestly could overlook these for a game I only intended to play through once. Sadly, there are deeper technical issues that I faced more than once in different ways, and it either roots back to developer laziness or lack of publisher funding. My guess is the latter, but since from a customer perspective the discrepancy is moot, I place the blame on them both and let that run its course. The first time I encountered an issue was early on, with a loading screen. Never mind that I'm sick of hearing about the poor in Everlight, but when the game freezes during a loading screen and I have to restart my computer to fix it because it caused windows task manager to corrupt while loading, I really can't be so forgiving. This however only happened once and I was going to just forget about it. Until a few missions later when I had an issue where workers would just not move. They just stand still, won't build new structures, won't gather resources, won't send couriers, nothing. I had hoped reloading would fix it, but it seems that whatever causes it saves with the save file, and so the only fix was to load my last autosave before the mission and restart it again and again until that didn't happen. I spent nearly 2 hours on this. Any game with bugs that cause a core function to stop running need to fix that. We're not talking about graphical issues, or minor annoyances with workarounds; we're talking about being unable to actually do the thing I spent money to do. I cannot play the game. Strike 2, I just want to finish the damn thing and maybe file a bug report. Until I got to the last mission and now quest items aren't being recognized in my inventory, a whole side quest does *literally nothing,* and I cannot progress because access to the areas needed to progress with the quest don't become available when they seemingly should. I had to stop playing because after spending a good 30 minutes rechecking every area and looking online for a solution, it was clear that moving beyond that point in the game was effectively impossible, and I wasn't going to spend another who knows how many hours restarting and redoing the first half the missions just to see if it worked right eventually. No, that's it for me. Strike three. A full system crash, a serious bug that stops nearly all progression gameplay, and another bug that stops you from finishing the game on the last quest of the last mission. This just reeks of *rush to publish it so we can rob customers and not lose money.* I've never had an issue with THQ Nordic games before, but it wouldn't be the first time that a publisher forced a developer to rush a game to meet financial deadlines, and it also wouldn't be the first time that a developer took shortcuts to get done quicker and meet those deadlines. I don't know which is at fault, and I honestly don't care. The fact remains that I spent money on a game that I cannot even play through once. So I'm afraid I cannot recommend this game. I want to, so badly. It has a lot of potential to be amazing but it fails to deliver on the basic needs of a game: It needs to be playable. I hate using this phrase for how exaggerated it always is, but as far as I'm concerned, this game is literally unplayable.Show moreShow less
