Be careful – The store page says it has co-op, but you can't play the story in co-op, just some dumb minigame.Show moreShow less

I'll update this if it gets patched The game looks great and clearly a lot of effort went into the animations, but mechanically it's not all there yet. The only things they have done really well mechanically are the jumping and basic attacks. General: The Camera settings get reverted every time you switch characters or initiate a wall jump The lip syncing is off in the cutscenes Bikini Bottom (The hub world) is foggy and I can't tell if it is intentional or not. Moving platforms cancel your jumps, like you're being sucked back into them. Hitting enemies into other enemies to kill both often doesn't work. Leaving the final ramp after sliding makes you lose all your momentum. Spongebob: The Spongeball is absolutely abysmal in this remake, it has no real momentum, the physics are off, the only way they got it to work was by putting invisible magnets around jumps you're supposed to make and even then they don't work all the time. The Bubble Bash and Wall jump animations are stiff and awkward Bungee jumping is also bad, it was somewhat janky in the original, but here it's worse, it often glitches out the camera as well. Patrick: Throw fruit has become as lazy as the Spongeball as well, it locks on to every single platform rather than requiring you to aim and judge the distance it will go without overshooting, the lock-on is also inconsistent, sometimes it will bounce off tikis without destroying them, and getting a lock-on to trigger is also inconsistent, practically making you walk off a cliff or into a hazard to get it to show up. The belly flop is mostly consistent but some of the time it won't register. Sandy: Swinging is awful, it feels nothing like the original, it's so bad that they literally forgot to have an animation when you jump after a swing, lasso gliding is done well enough, but they forgot to include the mechanic where you're able to pull enemies in different directions after you lasso them, in the original you could lasso someone, hold down a direction button and pull them in whatever direction you wanted or into another enemy to kill both.Show moreShow less

I really want to love this game, but it astounds me that the devs didn't take the extra month to polish and remove what was a surprising amount of bugs. 86 Spatulas in and I hit a game breaking bug, which has ended my 100% playthrough and has led me to write this unfortunate review. So, here are my thoughts on BFBB: Rehydrated, organized in things I liked versus things that I didn't. What I liked: - Visuals/Graphics: The game has a very bright and colorful aesthetic that makes the majority of Bikini Bottom feel much more alive than the previous game. Many of the textures are very well designed, and overall I feel like they really nailed it within the art department. Only issue is some areas like Kelp Forest are a little more playful as a result, which takes away from the creepiness I experienced before. Still, very nice. - New Gameplay Mechanics: They made some updates to some abilities, including a stun threshold for Patrick's slam based on his jump, and the ability lasso from the air with Sandy. I also enjoyed some of the faster pacing tweaks with abilities including Spongebob's slam and bubble bash. - Music is dope as always. What I disliked: - Environmental Interactions: These little interactions are where I feel like with a bit more time they really could have made the game feel much more cohesive. First, is Sandy's swinging. I don't think anybody disliked just clicking the grapple button in the original. Having to constantly hold down the button, while the game's odd physics pull you in and throw you off in odd angles has turned what was my favorite mechanic from the original game into quite the chore. Sometimes I would be in the middle of swinging and the hand would pull me out of the game for absolutely no reason. Next is the sliding. While overall it was fine, there were some weird physics interactions where you'd randomly get thrown off the slide, perhaps in part because of the new forced camera turning system. Also are the giant speed lines on the sides of the screen really neccessary? I understand if I was holding the joystick forward for them to appear, but eventually they were there to stay and block a third of the screen. Also the music was hard coded to stop when you slid, so even a tiny slide for one second would disrupt the music track, causing it to reset. Next is the wall jump. While the quickened pace and automation attached to it made it feel super slick in the first levels, it was when I got to Dutchmen's Graveyard where I realized just how "hold my hand" it was. What was one of the most challenging areas to master such a mechanic was suddenly as easy as spamming x. Lastly, is Spongebob's bungee jumping. I don't think the recovery of resetting to a slower/shorter bounce is quite there. My character would consistently just stay at the same lengthy bungee value and force me to break Tikki's on the way upward at the Sea Needle. Also, visually its not the most polished thing to look at. - Enemy Encounters: These enemies are brain dead. I would get through entire levels without them getting a single attack off on me because between the time they walked up to you, waiting two seconds, and then swung, you could smack them four different ways. In the original, yes they were easy, but it really felt like the attack animations in this one were slowed by so much. There's also some audio missing, such as Tar-Tar's attack startup. While I like the idea of hit indicators, playing the game just showed me how truly unnecessary they are. It feels, again, too "hold my hand" for a game built on really simple mechanics and platforming. Also new mechanics such as speedy abilities and sandy's aerial lasso eliminated threats such as Sleepy-Time from the game entirely. If your going to speed up and improve the capabilities of the player, you might as well speed up and improve those of the enemies, right? This brings me to easily one of the most disappointing aspects of the game... - Boss Fights: Honestly, after the Sandy boss fight, I was shocked. It felt like the boss wanted to rush through its downgraded attack pattern as fast as possible so that I could put it out of its misery. Poor thing. And that's honestly the story for all of these bosses. If you thought the basic enemies were downgraded, these bosses are laughable. Robot Patrick's toxic ice cream barrage didn't hit me once and I literally stood completely still for the entire thing. It also doesn't help that there are hit indicators to tell you that you are safe to just stand there afk. On the final stage, his back was turned toward the main platform FOR ALL THREE OF HIS ATTACK OPENINGS. I didn't have to sponge bowl on a single conveyor belt. Isn't that the point of the conveyor belts? The difficulty of the third stage? Whatever. The forced camera sponge bowl thing probably would have screwed it up anyway. Dutchman and prawn were more of the same, having largely slowed attacks that allowed me to just stand still when I really should have been jumping like my life depended on it. I would probably be commenting on the final boss, but my game got toasted by bug, so yeah. - Certain Abilities: Like I said above, the spongebowl is terrible. The physics of it and the world make it a frustrating use, and I only used it when the game forced me to. This made the rolling ball room somehow more difficult than the original game, as the thing would sometimes not interact with buttons and structures, or pop prematurely. What's worse is my favorite ability in the original game: The cruise bubble. This thing is stiff af. It doesn't have the cheddar cheese smoothness of the orginal's and has this awkward initiation that can cause it to immediately crash. An ability that was mostly fine, but definitely felt like it needed some touching up was Patrick's watermelon throwing. Sometimes an indicator would get stuck which would have Patrick throwing behind himself and completely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Tiki Roundup. - Bugs and Glitches: Obviously there was the game breaking one. So that's fun. I was in the middle of grinding shiny objects too and had saved up 60,000 when this happened. Monitor's fine. Every now and then I would get clipped into a part of the map and be stuck there until I reloaded the area. Careful when jumping slides, cause the game doesn't know how to handle turning you around and will just lock your character in place. Not sure if bug, but I was Sandy in Rock Bottom's museum which let me bypass a lot of the obstacles, and then suddenly became Spongebob when I left the area. Also big thing, I use inverted camera controls and they would reset every time I switched my character, so every single time I had to go into menu and set it back to inverted. This made the crystal cave portion quite a headache. Conclusion: - So, i'm not sure why they didn't just straight up develop a Battle For Bikini Bottom 2. They wouldn't have to try and beat out the unbeatable mechanics of the original, and would still generate a lot of buzz around the community. Most importantly, they would be able to do their own thing with similarly adjusted mechanics and perhaps a bunch of fresh ones too. Maybe they'll fix a lot of the problems I have discussed in this review in the coming months. Who knows, but until then, I say just play the original. I think you'll find that it holds up surprisingly well.Show moreShow less

DO NOT GET THIS GAME FOR THE CO OP!!!!! VERY BUGGY!! As a massive Sponge bob fan and having high anticipation for this game i was greatly disappointed with what it had to offer. First of all, when it says "Co-op" it isn't the co op you're thinking of where it would be with the mains story line. Instead, they give you a crappy mini game with waves of bots to fight off, kind of like a COD zombies game. And don't even get me started on how buggy this game is. I tried restarting numerous times and there is nothing you can do to fix some of the bugs in this game. It such a horrible game and I would advise everyone who is interested in it to NOT buy it please. There is a reason this game is on sale constantly....Show moreShow less
