Stacklands is an interesting idea, brought to life with gusto, that I - sadly - don't want to touch again, ever. I've played it for over 3 hours and reached the vanilla win condition, and I can with certainty say that it's cute, funny, challenging, compelling, ... ...but it's also stressful & messy. While constant micromanaging of every production facility I can somewhat handle with constant pausing... ...what I cannot handle is the tendency for cards to try to arrange themselves in the messiest way possible. The playable are of the board looks big, but even when playing casually you'll quickly find you need all the space you can get to have even a semblance of order. Stacks of cards always keep their full physical size, so your very necessary food stockpile will stretch from top to bottom of the board. You'll need to keep your crafting resources in separate little stacks because all of them have the same colour, so you won't be able to quickly pick out Wood if you put it in a stack also containing of Stones, Poop, Planks, and Flints. And you'll need multiple copies of your Farms and Gardens (to not starve) and your production facilities (to make progress at a sane pace). Oh, and you'll need a space for opening Card Packs, too. (Obviously, there is NO GRID.) And over such tightly packed board, the Cerberus of Mechanics rears its heads, each barking a foul truth: "Cards bounce off of each other. With quite a spring, too." "Every. Single. Card. enters the board by randomly flying out of a stack or a Card Pack" "Cards can land on the nearby stack! If they feel like it. No, we won't show you the range." That dreaded chtonic canine ensures that the entire game is spent in the constant state of correcting the effects of chain reactions. Your Quarries in the bottom left will throw a Stone upwards - or maybe they will throw it between themselves and push your entire production chain out of place? Your Farms will calmly throw a freshly-grown Apple Trees downward - or maybe they will throw it diagonally and bounce off the top of the board? Who knows? Your Apple Trees will throw Apples onto that giant stack of Apples right next to them - or maybe they'll throw it on top of a stack of random foods that's slightly further away? Oh, hey, here's a surprise - an angry Goblin! It will go over your piles of resources and throw them in random directions. (Don't even get me started on Rabbits...) If you can handle all that, then Stacklands is a great game. If you can't... it's a NIGHTMARE.Show moreShow less

For its low price point, you'll get your money's worth if you decide to give it a go. The card game thematics are novel and give a nice mixed feeling of playing a card game, almost like a deck builder, mixed with survival video game mechanics (gather resources, ensure you have enough food for the next day, use resources to generate better resources, defend yourself from enemies...) That said, I can't recommend the game in its current design of gameplay and balance. You'll spend more time moving your cards back to where they were on the board because they're constantly nudged around like popcorn, than you will actually playing the game. Whenever a task generates a card, the card will fly off in a seemingly random direction, by design. The worst part is, there ARE late-game crafts to help against this (magnets), which the game teases you by presenting you the crafting recipes for them early on, but never letting you have access to the ingredients for these recipes until you're just about at the final handful of quests. Which by this time, there's so much going on on the board that even if you do have things glued down in certain spots on the board, when a band of 8+ enemies arrive and your stack of units engage them in battle, your entire set of cards is going to go flying in all directions regardless. This game has you teeter on the line between fun and frustrating. After 10 hours I think I've had my fill.Show moreShow less

This is exactly what it says on the tin — a game about stacks of cards. Like an incremental game, only with physical cards that jump around and fall apart, constantly breaking the way you arranged them. Not sure it was a stellar idea.Show moreShow less

I really wanted to like this game. But, after playing for about a dozen hours, I can't recommend it. The core idea is great. I love the mechanics of stacking cards to combine them and produce other useful things (flint + stick = campfire, etc). I had a blast for the first 5 or 6 hours of playtime. But then, things got tedious. My biggest beef with this game is the lack of automation. In a game like this, I want to build structures or train professionals to reduce the number of clicks I need to make. In the lategame when I'm manually finding and combining the ingredients I need for the soup I want to feed to a dozen or more people, that cycle of grow-find-combine-cook-serve gets a lot less fun the fiftieth time you have to do it. I want to train a chef to do all that nonsense for me. I want to train a fisherman to automatically catch fish and fillet them. Instead, I have to click and drag my fisherman onto the fishing hole, then when he catches a fish I have to click and drag him onto the fish, and if I don't do that last step then the fish just swims all over my base knocking things everywhere. I'd like to get to the point where my focus as a player is almost entirely on the big epic challenges -- battling the giant <redacted> or trying to see how high a level I can <redacted>. I want to spend my time crafting gear and theorycrafting battle strategy and taking on harder and harder foes. I want to be a general, not a short order cook. This is absolutely a game I could see myself coming back to and enjoying if some of these changes went in.Show moreShow less

In Stacklands, the roguelike card game, I rage and fume, it's all the same. The chickens come and mess up my piles, Leaving cards scattered for miles and miles. I try to stack them neatly and true, But the chickens just don't have a clue. They peck and scratch and make a mess, Leaving my stacks in total distress. I curse and shout and stamp my feet, But the chickens just don't seem to cheat. They keep on coming, one by one, Destroying all the work I've done. But despite my rage and endless woes, I can't help but play this game, I suppose. For Stacklands is a strange delight, A roguelike card game that keeps me in the fight. So I'll keep on playing, chicken woes be damned, And hope that someday I'll win, or at least not be banned.
