Our Verdict
Stray earns an 8.4 overall, and that score certifies it as one of the most charming, beautiful and emotionally resonant indie games of its generation — a small gem that turned the simple fantasy of being a cat into an unforgettable atmospheric adventure. It is held just short of greatness by its modest length and deliberately simple systems, but within its scope it is close to flawless. The 8.4 reflects a focused, complete, lovingly crafted experience that does almost everything it sets out to do beautifully.
Buy it to be a cat in a beautiful world

Buy Stray if any part of its premise appeals to you, because it delivers on all of it. This is the game for cat lovers, for players who treasure atmosphere, art and mood over mechanical depth, for anyone who wants a touching, self-contained emotional adventure they can finish in an evening or two, and for fans of cyberpunk worlds and environmental storytelling. The unique joy of embodying a convincingly animated cat, the breathtaking Kowloon-inspired world, the affecting bond with B-12, and the wistful, beautiful audio combine into an experience that is genuinely unlike anything else, and its short length means it never wears out its welcome. For the right player, Stray is a near-perfect few hours, a game that earns its acclaim and its awards through sheer craft and charm rather than scale, and one that lingers in the memory far longer than its runtime would suggest. It is exactly the kind of focused, heartfelt experience that the indie space exists to produce, and it comes warmly recommended to anyone willing to meet it on its own gentle terms.
Skip it if you want length or depth

Approach Stray with clear expectations, or skip it, if its limitations are dealbreakers for you. This is a short game — six to eight hours — and a mechanically simple one, with light puzzles, minimal combat and little replay value, so a player seeking a long, meaty, systems-rich experience or a real test of skill will find it slight. The narrative, while affecting, is also relatively simple, so those who crave deep, detailed worldbuilding and extensive lore may feel it leaves more unsaid than they would like. These are not flaws in execution but consequences of scope and design intent: Stray chose to be a concise, accessible, atmospheric experience rather than a sprawling or challenging one, and that choice genuinely does not suit everyone. A player whose idea of value is measured in dozens of hours or in mechanical complexity should weigh the brevity carefully before buying, because no amount of charm changes the fact that the game is small. Knowing that going in is the difference between cherishing Stray for what it is and feeling shortchanged by what it is not.
A genre-seeding little phenomenon

What lifts the 8.4 to a verdict on something special is the disproportionate impact Stray achieved relative to its size. This small game from a small studio became a genuine phenomenon, winning two Game Awards in 2022 including Best Indie and Best Debut Indie, drawing an Overwhelmingly Positive reception from hundreds of thousands of players, earning recognition for its sympathetic portrayal of animals, and helping to seed an indie subgenre of animal-protagonist games that followed in its pawprints. It proved that a cat could carry a major release, that atmosphere and charm could matter as much as scale, and that a focused, heartfelt experience could break through in a market dominated by ever-larger games — and a Netflix film adaptation now extends its reach further still. That outsized cultural footprint, built entirely on craft and heart rather than budget or length, is the truest measure of its success. The 8.4 is the verdict of a beautiful, charming, emotionally true little gem — short and simple by design, but realized with such excellence and personality that it became one of the most beloved games of its year. For the experience it offers, there is genuinely nothing else like it.

I'm a simple person. When I saw the cat, I bought the game.Show moreShow less
(REVISED REVIEW AFTER MORE INFORMATION HAS BEEN GATHERED FROM COMMENTS) NOT RECOMMENDED FOR PEOPLE WITH TIGHT BUDGETS So I do enjoy this game and I highly recommend people play it. However, due to me completing it in 6 hours while taking my time to explore every bit of content i do not recommend buying full price if you are wanting a game to take you more than a day. I usually play games like this at a SNAILS PACE, so if you play this at a normal pace, it may take about 3-4 hours (rough guess, different for everyone). This game is highly linear with only about 2 somewhat explorable areas. So if you were expecting a lengthy exploration game, as much as it pains me, this isn't that game. Replay-ability is on the low end if you were hoping to get new experiences from a second play-through. If you wan't the game and have money to spare go ahead and buy it but if your like me and don't have much to spend id recommend watching a walkthrough/ letsplay or waiting to buy on sale if you can be patient. I wanna thank all the people in the comments for providing me with information to make this a better review than it was originally i have left my old one below for context but IT IS NOT HOW I FEEL ANYMORE. This is an incredible game especially since it was only made by 5 people and i hope the company continues to make even better games like this and hopefully future games are even better than this one. Old terrible review below: __________________________________________________________________________ Great game, love it.... but I was hyped for this game for a long while aaaaaaannnnd... finished in 6 hours with all collectables unlocked. There is zero replay value, gave this cool city that i thought id be able to explore only to find out that I'm restricted to about.... 2 somewhat openly explorable areas. Other areas are super linear and locked behind story progression. unable to go back to previous areas. For someone like me this game entertained me... but was dissapointed at the lack of real gameplay.... idk i can't explain it properly.... TLDR: if you have the money to throw at it go for it, for anyone that has difficulties with the controls... skill issue I guess. If you're tight on money watch a letsplay or walkthrough... you'll get the exact same experience as playing it if just moving a cat isn't your idea of entertainment. open to additions to this review as I'm not the best at explaining things like this. Edit: since this keeps getting lost in the comments here... I'm not saying the game is bad, I'm just venting my frustrations and disappointment at the wasted potential here. You're all free to play the game and buy full price, and if i was given the ability to buy it later on sale instead of preordering... i would have still preordered. Theres just things left to be desired from it that i wanted to mention.... also looking out for my fellow poor gamers ;-; Edit 2: the two main reasons i made this review with comments on was to hopefully see others opinions (legitimate ones) to hopefully convince me to either play it again or feel less disappointed. and the second was to warn people with small budgets to not buy full price as those people want something to spend their free time on without having to get a different game altogether after putting 30 into this one. so far both have worked (taken from my comment cause i realized this would get lost within 30 minutes.)Show moreShow less
I got a cat because of this game.Show moreShow less
It breaks my heart to give this game a negative review, but I really don't see any way around it at this point. The product I purchased simply isn't worth the asking price. While the game isn't necessarily BAD as such, it displays a litany of significant flaws indicative of poor design and listless development. The Cat In theory, this game's protagonist is a cat. In practice, it hardly seems to matter. The cat can speak (via drone buddy acquired early on) and spends most of its time engaging with an established society. You could replaced the cat with a person (or a robot, as the case may be) and nothing of significance would change. Yes, the cat is small and climbs well. The same applies to Nathan Drake and Lara Croft. Or to Conrad from Flashback, for that matter. The cat is a gimmick at best, and the game really doesn't do much to capitalise on it. There ARE a few moments of cuteness, to be sure, but most of the time it's entirely irrelevant. The Plot It's weak and poorly-written, and that's putting it mildly. The beginning is pretty strong, exploring the world after humans and the kind of society servitor robots might form in their absence. Unfortunately, the writing seems to forget its own themes almost immediately thereafter, wildly swapping tone between sections. So while we start in a fairly grounded, high-concept sci-fi setting, we end up in heist movie populated almost exclusively by caricatures and bad characters. Worse, the game tries to pull off a tear-jerker plot (out of nowhere), which falls entirely flat on its face because the characters are paper-thin. It's shocking to me how badly the entire lot of them are written, across the board. Every character is given exactly one defining characteristic - one dimension - and never allowed to grow past that point. They're either haunted by their gimmick, or they've overcome their gimmick despite still being defined by it. So when the game wants me to feel bad this or that cardboard cutout of a person died, I struggle to even remember their name. Put it this way - there's a character called "Doc", who has wiring coming out of his head reminiscent of Einstein hair, who's created a device which requires "1.8 GIGAWATT" of electricity to run. Is this a serious dramatic story where I care about the characters or a parody comedy? Because it can't be both. The Gameplay Meh at best. It's almost entirely linear and scripted. Run down a narrow hallway, pressing the button when the prompt appears. Maybe run away from things. And that's when the game is working well. When it starts asking you to pull off stealth sections with no stealth mechanics, instant failure conditions and no checkpoints is where the bottom falls out from the entire experience. That's where "cute" becomes "frustrating", and not in a good way. That's not to say it's ALL bad. The game does shine exactly once - in the slums very early in the game. The Slums are Stray's largest area by far, they offer the most diverse range of climbing options, access to rooftops and puzzles best suited for a cat (crawling through high windows and vents). It almost feels like a point-and-click adventure at times, managing inventory and finding items to trade or combine. But that's it. That's the ONE time this happens. Every other area of the game is either a linear hallways or nowhere near as open. The last area basically feels like it came out of a completely different game. Mechanics are introduced, used for a bit, then almost entirely forgotten. In fact, mechanics are barely ever used. The vast majority of this game is a walking simulator. In Conclusion Neat idea, awful execution. Maybe if the story weren't so pretentious, or the gameplay weren't so passive, or if any of the areas past the first were actually interesting, I might feel differently. It just feels like the development team managed to make every wrong decision along the way, creating what feels like an experience sewn together from the scraps of other failed projects.Show moreShow less

Spend your 30 dollars elsewhere and watch someone play the game. The puzzles are way too simple, the gameplay insultingly linear, and the plot so unfulfilling. The first 30 minutes are the only interesting part of the game. There is no variety, no incentive to complete Easter eggs, and no replay value. The only thing it has going for it are the visuals. This game would not have sold a copy if it hadn't had a cat as the protagonist. And being a cat gets old quick. The marketing materials are deceptive. Consider buying a game that you can play for longer than a couple hours instead.Show moreShow less

greatly overrated, yeah, me too i like cats and robots. game is repetitive, short and directive. If main character wasn't a cat, no way this game would have overwhelmingly positive reviews.Show moreShow less

Way too short for $30. If it weren't so high quality in departments like textures and animations it wouldn't even be worth $20. Even for $20 this game is pushing the price. Unfortunately the review section is full of "head empty cat only" style humor flooding the reviews and ruining any chance of this game getting a fair rating score. Don't be fooled, wait until it's cheaper. Edit 7/31/22: Also my gameplay time says 11.5 hours but my save file says 6.5 hours. Do with that information as you'd like.Show moreShow less
