Stronghold Crusader is the definition of comfy. It's pleasant to listen to, pleasant to play, pleasant to look at, and has many pleasant peasants for your omnipresent pleasure. I hope the game will have great success cause you deserve it. Listening to the community nowadays is really rare thing. Thank you for keeping this beautiful series alive. Many of us have grown with this game. You guys made our childhood awesome. All i can say is thank you so much <3 The desert awaits us!!!Show moreShow less
I was genuinely excited for Stronghold: Definitive Edition. I convinced several friends to get it with me, hoping for a modern, polished version of a classic. What we got instead is a completely unplayable mess, both in singleplayer and multiplayer. Singleplayer: You play against AI that barely functions. Enemy lords can’t build proper castles, manage their economy, or even attack effectively. It’s like playing against a broken sandbox, not a strategy game. There’s zero challenge and zero fun. Multiplayer: This is where I had hopes and it’s where things get worse. Everyone is dealing with severe input lag, random disconnects, and constant desyncs. It’s borderline unplayable. There’s no excuse for this in 2025, especially when other definitive editions (like AoE or C&C) actually work. The Roadmap? It’s a joke. “New AI personalities” won’t fix anything when the AI can’t even function now. What this game desperately needs is: • Dedicated servers • Player reconnection support • Improved diplomacy (alliances, trades) • Core system improvements, not just cosmetic fluff. But let’s be real. This is Firefly Studios. Based on their track record, they’ll throw in some paid AI skins and move on. This could’ve been amazing, a proper Stronghold multiplayer RTS for a new generation. Instead, it’s a cash grab with the “Definitive Edition” name slapped on. Do not buy until (or unless) they overhaul the fundamentals. Right now, it’s just money down the drain.Show moreShow less
One of the first games I ever played thanks to my old man. Dad would set LAN games because we didn't have broadband or dial up. Alas those days are gone... I shall play in his memory.Show moreShow less
This game advertises, that you can have an army up to 10,000 people, but in a game with 8 players involved, the game will just tell you, that you reached the maximum army size at around 300 people. Realizing this fact and bringing it to attention, will just get you banned from their community page and pretended, like this issue never happened. Same goes to other things, like Moat diggers randomly stop digging moats near trees or archers keep on shooting in front of a target instead of shooting their target.Show moreShow less
Don't expect Age of Empires II level definitiveness here, it's an HD remaster. Still a solid one, can't complain As for the game itself, there is a good reason why they are publishing this for the fourth time and still get away with it - the original game was an absolute masterpiece far ahead of its time. An RTS with a production chain based economy where building layout actually matters, resources are stored in an actual stockpile, with castle siege warfare more advanced and fun than Total War's? I have yet to see another game like that decades after the Crusader release There is also a good reason why it has never reached the stars - all this good stuff is singleplayer only. Things were never properly balanced for multiplayer. They didn't even implement the community patch that made multiplayer somewhat playable But yeah, "Greetings, sire! The desert awaits you!" still hits, absolutely recommendedShow moreShow less
I really wanted to love this. As a long-time fan of Stronghold Crusader, I came in hoping for a worthy modern take one that respected the original but brought meaningful improvements to the table. What we got instead feels like a mixed bag at best: part quality-of-life update, part ghost of the past, and part haunted house full of 20-year-old bugs that just refuse to die. Yes, there are some QoL improvements: auto-trading, builders no longer moonwalking to siege weapons, and a few stubborn bugs finally laid to rest. But for every step forward, the game seems to take two awkward steps back usually into a bonfire where a worker is permanently stuck. The AI, supposedly improved, is often laughably worse. Lords now sit in their shiny new castles hoarding gold like medieval crypto bros, refusing to launch actual attacks. And when they do, their tactics still make you wonder if they’re trying to win... or auditioning for a blooper reel. Pathfinding? Still tragic. Ballistas? Still drunk. Lancers? Still jogging like they're on a casual Sunday walk (unless you mod them). And the new javelin unit? Well… let's just say it's not winning any popularity contests in the barracks. Graphically, it’s subjective. Some might like the updated look, but many models feel AI-upscaled and lack the charm of the pixelated grit we grew up with. The new UI gives off mobile game vibes — and not in a good way. There are some bright spots: the co-op mode is fun, and the few new units and content do add a hint of freshness. But none of it really sticks. It’s like putting a fresh coat of paint on a castle with structural damage looks okay from afar, but step inside and you’ll still fall through the same broken floorboards. Verdict? At this price, it doesn’t justify the title of “Definitive Edition.” If you’re a veteran, stick with the HD version and the community patch. It plays better, feels better, and won’t leave you wondering why a 2025 release still suffers from 2002’s bugs.Show moreShow less
The original Stronghold Crusader wasn’t just a game to me, it was a part of my childhood. I still remember walking home from school every day as a child, and that walk always felt extra long—not because of the distance, but because I couldn’t wait to get home and play this game on my old computer. Those memories with castles, armies, and battles have lingered with me ever since. Now, I'm a middle-aged man with a full-time job, a family, and a child of my own. Gaming has become a luxury, as life is just too busy. I am so glad that they made this Definitive Edition—it is a time machine that brings me back to my childhood and allows me to be that worry-free child again. Even just for one or two hours, I'll be happy. There is lots of content in this remake, and I believe it’s worth the money. And unlike the previous remake, this time they finally added Skirmish mode and Co-op mode. They are game-changers for players like me who are no longer up for intense PvP games. I thank the Firefly Studios for making this re-make, and I hope both veterans and newcomers will enjoy it!Show moreShow less
I`ve been waiting so long to play with friend, and it still plays with 1-2 second delay for every click . Fix that pleaseShow moreShow less
When it comes to Stronghold Crusader, you might’ve heard a phrase like “The only strategy game I like”. I’m one of those people - not big on RTS in general. Visuals. This is peak 2D art. Clean, charming, and timeless - it still looks great, even decades later. Gameplay. The core loop is split into three satisfying parts: 1. Castle Building. Armed with precise tools and a wide variety of walls, towers, and gates, building your own fortress feels both strategic and creative. Whether you're optimizing for defense, economy, or just building the castle of your dreams. 2. Economy. The economic system is surprisingly deep, with a nice balance of management and planning. Though it has its quirks - like the fact that unlimited access to a high-value resource basically breaks the market - more often than not, you’re scraping by with tight micromanagement. 3. Battles. Unique units, tons of siege gear, and tactical gameplay where positioning and map knowledge matter. Game Modes and flexibility. Play Stronghold Crusader however you like: Love building but not fighting? Sandbox mode has you covered. Craving some tough military campaigns? Dive into dozens of handcrafted maps. Prefer structured objectives and story-driven content? Here are 100 missions within 4 historical campaigns. Set up a custom skirmish however you like, solo or with friends. The Definitive Edition adds QoL improvements and smoother gameplay with classic vibes. Even if RTS isn’t usually your thing, this one might convert you. The devs also have plans to update the game, so stay tuned.Show moreShow less
I barely see a point in getting this over the old HD version. I find the visuals to be more or less the same but look more smudged. - Multiplayer has extreme delay even when ping is low. Issue was not present in HD version. - Map is always zoomed in to the max when game starts instead of remembering last setting (unless changed in setting). Seems to be related to higher resolutions screens, no issue on my smaller 1080p screen. - Hard to find the little - and + for map zoom. - AI still has OLD issues from the campaign where core buildings are missing making some missions way too easy. - AI still can not fix holes in the castles due to terrain. - Deleted feature "half hide" buildings (why??) - Hotkeys do not show when hovering over buildings - No scroll click camera panning - A lot of tiles are now bugged and can not be built on without any visual obstacle (Invisible trees/bushes?) - Unclear how to attack as ranged with skirmishers - Fire ballistas randomly do not shoot arrows - Quarry workers(Ox Tethers) often do not work unless you delete the quarry and replace it. - Churches and Mosques do no longer show marriages - Sprites get stuck and do not disappear until the game is over - Auto-sell cant select to only keep X amount of tiles on the stockpile (1 stack of Hops as an example) - Arab/Bedouin lords do not make Arabic engineers while they are in the Saladin campaign - Concerns about DLC/DLC prices - The special Steam UI to invite friends is bad - Players can still spam-stack units in Towers/ single pixels. - Height bug still exists making "one-ways" where you can attack but others can not attack you - Dislike new end game screen - Steam name shown instead of Lord name in co-op fights - UI looks like it is made for phones + Easier to play together due to actual steam integrationShow moreShow less
