Warning: Installs 4.33GB of sneakware called "Gameranger" without prompting. Not sure why anyone would want to follow in the unhallowed footsteps of Gamespy Arcade, but there you go. F*** you Firefly. And before anyone chimes in and tells me it's harmless - it installed itself without my consent. That's a malicious act even if the software itself isn't.Show moreShow less

I played Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader long ago and was able to complete both war and economic campaigns as a young teen. I would often need to rethink my strategy, and yes, sometimes restart a mission, but I learned to perfect the ideal economics of pathing. In other words, I got better thanks to a well-designed game that made you think while still having fun. Cue Stronghold HD. I don't think this version on Steam is balanced. Even on normal difficulty, the "random" events (plagues, crop diseases, wolf packs, and bandits, etc.) seem out of control. I'm currently re-attempting level 4 from the economics campaign. The frequency of negative events has been absurd and nothing as I remembered from old. As soon as a bandit horde is driven off, another pack arrives at my doorstep... before the first group even leaves the map. And this is in the midst of a wolf pack attack, wheat blights, cow deaths, and... oh,... is my castle built on a volcano?!? Because the number of MAPWIDE fires is stupid. And you'd think a block of 7-8 shops would easily be protected by 4 wells (firemen), but as soon as a fire is put out, its neighbor erupts in a spewing portal of brimstone and sets it back on fire. Meanwhile, my poor peasants - drunkards and all - just waltz through and turn into flailing fire effigies (is it just me, or do their screams sound oddly similar to the running braves from "Populous, the Beginning"?) Anyway, I'll try the military campaign to see if its any different, but geez. What changed? I used to enjoy this game.Show moreShow less
More than 15 years old and still a better strategy game than Stronghold 3...Show moreShow less
I really wanted to like this game, seriously. The thought of playing a castle builder / siege laying / medieval RTS game made me excited, but probably a bit too much excited. While the game itself is fine, I felt like it kinda aged. Not too badly, but still not too well. The main campaign is divided into 2 parts, one "combat" part and another "economical" part. I only played through a quarter of the combat based campaign, took me around 1 hour to get there but... it felt quite dulling. You're only granted archers for quite a long time while the enemy got pikemen, archers, ladder carriers and catapults. It doesn't means it's difficult to beat them, in fact it's quite easy since you're in a defensive position. And that's where it's dulling. I only managed to almost lose one time during this playthrough. The game isn't difficult and after a bit of tweaking you get a winning strategy quite quickly. While the game is kinda quick paced, you just have to pick up the pace and that's it. The lack of diversity in the units given out makes it even more boring for those first parts of the campaign since... well you only have one single strategy to apply. Out of boredom, I switched to a free play to discover in one go everything the game had to offer. While it's a good thing to keep stuff simple, the game oversimplifies things a lot. Building construction mainly requires wood and stone (for fortification mainly), you only have 4 type of food (and you can just focus on one since having diversity is cool but really unnecessary) and special other resources are mainly for army building (iron, leather and horses). Buildings are constructed instantly (and so are military units) which is great for impatient people but at the same time making it unrewarding. I basically built every single building and military units under 30 minutes in freeplay. There’s a lot of other stuff that the game oversimplify that made me go meh but I’m gonna keep it “short” and stop there. This lack of diversity (and ultimately of strategy) got me bored in less than 3 hours of gameplay. This game might have been great at its time, but, as of now, other games that were released in them mean time might’ve made me too demanding for this one. 4/10Show moreShow less
The axe cutter dude is probably the most blood thirsty, savage, over powered unti in the whole game. I've seen that guy do crasy ♥♥♥♥ just to get fire wood for me including killing enemy axe cutters, destroying enemy catapults to collect the wood that the catapult is built with, and taking arrow fire just to get the last tree of the land. I respect these men. 10/10Show moreShow less
What this game needs from the developers: 1) Add skirmish mode (LAN Also) . 2) Add castle AI editor for skirmish. 3) Add unit AI editor (including what units to build). 4) Add larger map size in the map editor. (Add all these and i will pay you 30$ for that kind of addon i give you my word on that!) What will make this game epic: 1) Global conquest mode, with the entire map of europe, also allow the player select the regions he wants to attack and also get attacked the same way. 2) Ships!!!!!Show moreShow less
An oldschool RTS focused on resource management, Stronghold is probably still one of THE most accurate castle simulations you'll find, as more focus is given to castle management than elemination of enemy units. The novice RTS users or those who generally lack patience need not apply, as a lack of steam overlay (patch supposedly in progress) and general resource management focus means plenty of focus being required to see to the incredible intricacies. All of this said, avoid Stronghold Legends since it ends up just NOT being Stronghold, and avoid Stronghold 2 since it ends up being about where the series falls apart due to hitting the polygonal 3D ceiling pretty hard.Show moreShow less
