Game is good. Don't listen to the turbo nerd hyper-critics that say the story isn't good. Story is just fine. Sure, it's no FF7 or Chrono Trigger, but they gotta let it go and realize that 1) that's a pretty high bar to overcome and 2) it took years for people to realize how amazing those stories were and even more years for them to feel nostalgic about. I say this as a guy who literally spent hours making FF7 shrinky-dinks in middle school, but still didn't think it was "the best game I've ever played" at the time. I could do without the weird falsetto singing in the cut scenes, but that's just because I'm an old man. Also, coincidentally, because I'm an old man, I'm used to Japan throwing some weird crap at me in their fantastic RPG's, you spoony bard.Show moreShow less
The game itself is amazing so far. BUT the way Bandai Namco sells it is the reason I give this a negative review. If you buy the regular edition for 60 bucks you are locked out of certain active and passive skills that are linked to some of the DLC costumes. This totals to at least 15 unobtainable nodes in the ability matrix (per character). Unless you are willing to pay 30 bucks extra, this is the state of the game you get. I can live without some useless beach outfits, I can live with certain parts being a little grindy, but i don't accept to miss out on build options just because the publisher decides to cut quite important pieces out of a finished game to sell them separately.Show moreShow less

Tales of Arise is probably the best Tales game I've played thus far but buying the standard edition of the game causes Namco to spit in your face. The story isnt going to win any prizes but is engaging enough for me to care for and about the characters. The gameplay is almost perfect. It feels amazing to chain combos together and absolutely pummel an enemy. If you have played a Tales game before it will probably be your favorite bar none. There are two glaring issues with this game that need to be addressed. 1. SP, the experience points used to buy new abilities and improve gameplay mechanics like crit damage, perfect dodges, I frames etc. These are used in the title system, of which every character has 15 gained through basic gameplay and side quests (18 technically but thats #2). Each title is basically a mini skill tree with a permanent stat boost at the end. SP is painfully slow to gain during regular gameplay and there isnt a way to farm them quickly, some of the things they are used to purchase are basically required for progression and each character needs a total around 35-50k to unlock everything. Quests and Gigant monsters give nearly 25 battles worth but unless SP generation ramps up past the second half of the game I doubt ill be able to unlock everything. SP is the only base resource that cant be bought individually in dlc and comes in small amounts in most of the dlcs. The exception is the dlc artifact that doubles SP gained from battle. 2. This is where Namco spits in your face because basic abilities (some of which have been mainstays for the entire series) are also locked in the costume dlcs since they unlock titles. Each of 6 costume packs unlock a title for half the cast. This means that if you fail to buy the ultimate edition of the game you will have to spend an extra $42 canadian dollars to have all of the titles and abilities in the game. There is no season pass with all of the costumes either and the ultimate edition comes with enough extra items, buffs, and abilities to completely break the game balance on the hardest difficulty. Separate from the two glaring issues that break the game is also one specific dlc pack that is so wildly overpriced its baffling. For $45 canadian dollars you can buy extra normal battle themes from most of the previous entries in the series. This does not even come with the ultimate edition and arent boss battle themes or anything. In total if you bought the ultimate edition and non resource dlc you would be spending around $220 canadian. If you failed like me and bought the standard edition thinking the costumes and stuff would only be cosmetic then you would have to spend $240 canadian. I can understand cosmetics and level boosts being dlc options. I do not support basic aspects of the game being cut out to annoy me into spending 3 times the money for absolutely no reason. The DLC isnt mandatory to play through the game but I should be able to at least be able to earn all of the abilities available with the base game. Until namco allows me to earn them this negative review will stay up because it is predatory and disgustingly greedy.Show moreShow less

I'm going to go against the grain here. It's not 1/10 terrible, but I got too bored and jaded to finish it and overall regret the purchase, which I think qualifies it for a thumbs down. I wanted it to be great. Still, I tapered my expectations and waited for reviews. They were very positive so I pulled the trigger on the ultimate version. I thought I was safe, but still got burned. Pros: - great graphics - great voice acting except for Law who I can't stand - better combat system than berseria/zestiria - great performance/optimization on PC. This should be the norm all games strive to follow. Cons: - terrible writing that quickly falls apart after an initially good impression. I can see how one would think it's fine if this is their first contact with Japanese storytelling. However, if it's not, you'll recognize the cliches and tropes from a mile away. They are to be expected, but the execution/delivery made them very jarring. The good-natured but misguided son who joins the enemy and turns on their father even though it doesn't make much sense, then realizes his mistake and magically becomes capable of thinking again. wE'rE sTrOnGeR tOgHeThEr ThAn We ArE aPaRt. We gotta kill the irredeemable a-hole enemy bosses, BUT NOT WHILE HATING THEM. WE GOTTA FORGIVE THEM FIRST. Bruh. - INCONSISTENT writing. One moment the fem mc doesn't care about anyone else, then she cares, then she doesn't care again. - The execution of the skits. The style they chose is subjective, personally I think it's a downgrade from the previous one but whatever. The big problem is they endlessly repeat themselves, literally saying the same thing over and over in slightly different ways as if they didn't just talk about it. I loved the skits in berseria, they were numerous but very well written IMO and never got boring for me. The ones here bored me to death, - the characters have little chemistry imo. This makes the skits even worse. - the gasps. Very common in anime, but I've never heard so many. Feels like every 5th sound anyone makes is a shocked gasp. Breaks my immersion every time. - lame villains, evil just for the sake of being evil, no backstories, no relatability. - they keep preaching that the enemy race isn't all evil, but you only get to know 2 good ones, the rest are literally scum of the earth - poorly paced out, obviously rushed - lame 5-minute-job sidequests just for the sake of ticking that box - half good half terrible lip syncing, like they just gave up after a while. Maybe some don't care but it's very immersion breaking for me. I prefer outdated graphics to bad lip syncing. - overly goody-2-shoes MC. It's fine not to be one dimensional. - Main bosses can't be staggered. One of them in particular is ridiculous. Winning strategy was to aggro him then run in circles while long range allies shoot him. Otherwise I'd be able to get a single hit in before having to fall back, which wouldn't matter considering the huge health bar. In conclusion: None of the above are necessarily dealbreakers for me individually. But when taken together they were more than enough to make me jaded with the game. I'd finish it just to get some of my money's worth but I literally don't want to play it anymore. I tried sticking with it but the writing just got progressively worse. The only way I can explain the positive reviews is if they all come from gamers who have never played JRPG's/watched anime before and are in the honeymoon period, perceiving mediocre things as good and fresh just because they're new to them.Show moreShow less

Tales of Arise is a great game but the scummy way they unlock skills behind DLCs makes me hesitate to recommend it.Show moreShow less
This will be completely spoiler free. I have completed Tales Of Arise (PC) yesterday after playing around 80 hours on moderate difficulty, I have done most subquests and I wanted to share my thoughts on this game. I have also posted this same review on Reddit. Many people here in the Steam reviews have barely played the game to give any valid opinions about the game, so here we go. I have completed 6 Tales Of games before, multiple Final Fantasy games, Xenogears, Chrono Trigger, Ys and many others. I am not going to compare games or rank them. I want to share my thoughts about this game that might be interesting for others whether or not to buy this game. First impression: It was very good. After playing the old games, the very first moment you start this game it was a big wow for me. Unreal Engine on a Tales game? Everything looks amazing, fun battle mechanics, interesting story to start with. Absolutely amazing. Story: After finishing the game, I think the story was "ok". It is not great but it is also not bad. I think the story definitely had a lot of potential, however the second half of the game managed to lower my initial impression on this game. I don't want to go into specifics or spoiler territory. They had great ideas for the story at the start, but in the end it felt like a missed chance in terms of story writing and execution for me. Graphics: Not much to say, it looks very good. Nice looking environments. Nice looking skits and anime cutscenes. For a Tales game, it is absolutely amazing. Music: It is good but sometimes it was too much. I am not sure how to describe it. At certain parts it sounded too "epic" than it should be. Overall I think it was okay, not that big of a deal. Exploration: They have quest markers in the mini map, it is very clear where to go and what to do. NPCs also have the checkmark above their head to indicate that you have already talked to them before. There is the fast travel/waypoint system so you don't have to walk. The game really rewards you to do exploration for good gear and items. I managed to get some very awesome items by exploring as much as I could in each map. The game also has an interesting cooking system that gives a lot of good buffs and a campfire to restore HP/CP. Fishing was also a fun activity to do while exploring the maps. For me, exploration was very well done! Quests: Doing the side quests gave very good rewards and did not feel like a chore to me. The biggest problem that I have is that there was no recommended level for the side quests. It happens very often that you are lets say lv 20. The side quests tells you to kill an elite monster, and it turns out this monster is lv 30+, which is basically impossible for you to complete right now. In my opinion a recommended level would be very much appreciated here... Overall the questing is fun, has good rewards, but the system has some flaws. Battle: It was fun to battle at the start. There are many things you can do in the battle and I like that. There is not really a second where you have to wait for more action. Some boss fights were also fun and challenging for me to do on moderate difficulty. The biggest flaw that I have with the battle system is about the AI. There is no way to control which monster your AI party members will attack. This basically made the battle less fun and borderline annoying, especially in the second half of the game where the monster HP was a lot higher at moderate difficulty. Instead of you deciding how you battle, I had to look at which monster my party member was attacking and attack the same monster. The biggest problem is when the HP pools of certain monsters were very high and they push you against 3 elite monsters, and because of the lack of control over your party members, this made the fights more difficult than it should be. Also they could die easily when facing big attacks from bosses. If I could at least control that they attack the same monster, this would have been a much better experience for me! Overall this felt like a missed chance. Great idea, fun battle system but just this small thing of having no control will be annoying for many players, especially at difficulties higher than normal. Dungeons: Very small puzzles and easily doable without using a walkthrough. I think it was fun to explore all the rooms to get good items and gear. And also to retrieve key items to proceed within the dungeons. Yes some monsters are some reskins, and for me it was not that big of a deal, just a minor thing. However, the biggest flaw for me, is that at some moments they decide to disable the fast travel, so that you have to walk all the way back. And of course the big HP pools elites have returned... DLC/ads: I see a lot of complaints from people. Personally, a little bit of advertising on the right side during a campfire was not a big deal to me. I did not feel forced to buy any DLC, nor did I need DLC to get money in the game. The game is perfectly playable without buying ANY DLC. Sure there are some people that think it is absolutely unforgivable to have any kind of DLC or advertisement, however I don't want to have any discussion about this. It is as it is. I believe for many players it won't be that big of a deal, but if it is for you, then now you know that there are ads and DLC in this game! Final thoughts: I have enjoyed my 80 hours in this game. I am happy with my pre-order on the standard edition and I have got enough hours of enjoyment from this game. If I have to give it a grade, it would be either a 7.5 or 8 depending on my mood and how much weight I place in certain aspects :) Overall I think it is a good and fun game to play, but it has some flaws that diminish the initial first impression.Show moreShow less
I'll try not to rant. Tales of Arise commits some egregious dlc no-nos and has gotten far too little flak for it. First of all, locking character abilities at all behind launch day dlc is some hot ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, but the fact that there is stuff as impactful as a characters only aoe heal is ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up. This is huge and the worst dlc I've personally seen in a JRPG. Also this game has some of the strangest balancing... enemies are complete damage sponges, cash is very tight playing 'normally' without excessive grinding, and your levels are always lower and by a non-insignificant amount than the enemy's. These are issues I've never had in the history of the franchise. And what a surprise, you can just hop over to the DLC store to fix all these issues by purchasing money and xp boosts. And to top it all off, they put the DLC menu right in the camp and on your main menu and constantly find ways to give you the red "attention!" Signal on the UI for the store so it's constantly reminding you of it's presence. Honestly it's the worst DLC practices I've seen in the subgenre myself and I'm shocked only one reviewer seemed to mention it at all. The game is fantastic besides these issues imo, but I'd really recommend people avoid the game for these reasons. I've heard a lot of people excusing the practices as well - oh it's fine you're under leveled, farming dogtags gets you cash if you know what your doing, just use Shionne to heal, Tales have had xp/gald dlc before..... But the plain truth is this stepped way over a line. Never have I felt the need to penny pinch or grind levels in this series until Arise, which could just be attributed to a change in design, but when taking in the whole picture of the DLC it's hard to excuse it. Predatory dlc that's clearly effected the games design to extract money from players via low effort DLC. Straight up shameful, and really mars what would have otherwise been my favorite entry in years.Show moreShow less
