FINALLY a Dev who knows what a 'Tycoon' game is supposed to be! Not a puzzle game. Not a rogue-like. No combat or missions. Just a complete freedom to build and manage the daily operations of your Tavern in this beautiful medieval setting!! Of course not for everyone as this type of game may be redundant or boring to some. But for those enjoying true building and management games, this one is a nice little gem! There are LOTS of items and customization options available. + The dev remains totally active and committed to this game. The latest update is especially quite fantastic, notably adding the 'brewery' concept and increasing the number of bars you can have in your building, among many other improvements (!) So whether you are new to this game, or haven't played it in a long time, I can only recommend that you pour yourself a cold beverage of choice, sit down and chill-out, while traveling back in time and building the Medieval Tavern of your dreams! ...I can even smell that warm and delicious stew coming from the kitchen! ;pShow moreShow less
A 12 minute video of 3 in-game days. To show you what happens after the 4 fun hours. https://youtu.be/ZoerBbcpCw4 I have serious beef with this game. I regret buying it, because it is so darn frustrating. Never the less, maybe the devs will read this so I will list it all. The ECONOMY is so unbalanced. You get way more coin than you will ever need to spend. I decided to make things pretty to use up some of that coin. Which leads me to... The PRESTIGE. Oh lord, if the economy is unbalanced, the prestige is game breaking. The higher prestige the higher level adventurers. You can also organize special events, but you dont really need 160K prestige for an event. You need 30K at most for the best event. It's also connected to... The THIEF which comes by roughly once a week. While you can rent a guard, with higher prestige two bandits will spawn and that one quest you have "Defend against thieves" will be perma-stuck, because you dont need to defend, you need to defeat. The ADVENTURES was something I was excited about, but that ended fast. If you want the achievement connected to this, start very early to send parties out with less than 30% chance, because very soon you cant. Because prestige. Also, sending out adventurers to search the market, fish, and pick berries? Why not have a travelling merchant with randomized inventory instead? And let the adventurers find loot, armor, and buff items? The HOTEL is a joke. You spend all that space, all that money to make 5 star rooms, and the profit from a 5 star and a 2 star room is the same. Founds out later on that you can adjust the price, but if you want to be sure to rent it, the income is nihil. This is a Tavern MANAGEMENT game. There is no management screens, there is nothing really to manage. *You open the tavern, hire people to do absolutely everything, and hit double speed. *You'll be prompted to sometimes refill containers if they run out. *You get to micromanage employees to put out fires. These fires are random and frequent, even with the best wax and oils. The fire extinguishers can be upgraded, but just to add more buckets. As far as I have seen, the first bucket kills the fire so it's a totally pointless upgrade. *You level up the employees manually. You can re-spec them anytime you like, it's free. You can cycle through the offered employees to hire, and if you dont like them (i.e. if they cant carry 8 cups, just hit refresh a couple of times.) *You get the pleasure of manually buying new casks every time the thief has been, he always steals two, and always from the ground floor. *You can decide what it served by de-selecting items in the menu. This wasn't described anywhere, and was found by accident. Before I found this out, I arranged events that would serve soup, main, or dessert, to get those quests. *You may pick an event, and then you sit and look at it. As you can see, the game is more about looking at double speed people and watching a movie at the same time. Refill containers, open the tavern, and watch some tv. Rinse and repeat. The first 4 hours were awesome. I had seen in the reviews that it's a grindy game. I LIKE grindy games, but this is another level. It's kinda like a mobile game, in the sense that you are bored while watching tv and you just need another layer of activity. The BUILDING is a joke. You can make walls, only where it's allowed. Which is every 4x4 squares. The PLACING of items is a joke. Nothing in the ratio of items is logical in comparison to the building grid. The ITEM PRIORITY is also a joke. *All the waitresses walk to the closest packing station to the kitchen. They dont stack, so 1 table is used, and in my case, 9 tables stand unused. *All the researchers go to the same bookshelf. And why is there not described anywhere that they need a bookshelf? And why would you need to hire 10-20 of them to finish the research tree at late stages of the game? *All the chefs, regardless of where they work, on what floor, walks to the first placed item. In the case of soup, this is game breaking. I have 4 kitchens on the ground floor and instead of making 3x4 soups on that floor, I make 3 soups. And those chefs just keep walking away from their own kitchen, waiting to use those 3 cauldrons for the 3 variations of soup the game offers, and then walks back to their own kitchens service counter. Customers get beyond frustrated waiting for their food. Which makes... The TAKEOUT a frustration of its own. Not needed at any stage of the game and just slowing the dysfunctional kitchen situation down even more. Dont get me started on THE SKILL TREE. It is extremely linear, and the further in you get, the more frustrating it gets because there is no management to do. Just watching the screen on double speed and waiting. Then we get to the last part of my story... Because I spent the money on this game, I want something out of it. It was enjoyable for 4-5 hours, and then it has been pure unadulterated waiting. Not a grind, a wait. A long, slow, wait. I am now 31 hours in, and I want that damned last achievement. Because this game was SO not worth the money. The QUESTS. The questline is very very long. Last thing I will finish before I uninstall this mess. You need a total of 800 points to finish them all, and you get between 2 and 5 points per finished quest. You may have 4 quests active per day, and you cannot reject them. As soon as you get enough prestige, you will only have 3 quests a day because there is no way to Defeat/Defend against the thief. Since you cant abandon this will slow you down even more. Hear me, dear reader, I have played 31 hours, and I am not done with the repetitive quests yet! The discord channel they want you to join does not work, and there is no tutorial. No help page, and no explanation what furniture are needed and not needed. The last thing I unlocked is WINTER MODE. Start the game over from scratch, on a 4th of the map, all the same bugs, no research done, no quests done, and you can start over. Instead of treating me to a less buggy game, I get the same one again, with some very minor changes, like heating is required.Show moreShow less

Edit now that I see this got quite a few likes: Take my review with a lot of salt people. It is mostly framed against the price and release status. If this game were labeled Early Access I would not have written this review with this tone. Further, if this game were at a price such as $7.99 or something similar I would not have written this review with this tone. Finally, it has also come to my attention that this game is a solo project, with an active and attentive developer. Patronize this game, it is getting worked on, despite the lack of Early Access status. I can't recommend the game as a full release product at $14.99. There's simply not enough flavor text or supportive world building/storytelling to differentiate this from a high-level web game. I'm not asking for a novel, or even any kind of coherent story, but this game feels pretty soulless. The frustrating thing about it is that it is very close to having that super fun(ny) side, but there's just not enough attention to detail and/or follow-through on the overall world implied by the tiny little sandbox you are in. Just taking the time to add a few lines of quippy text here and there would go a long way to livening things up. As would finding a way to personify the quest table and the unlock system a bit more - they both feel incredibly tedious and done for the sake of containing an additional system, and they don't really contribute to the fun so much as they provide additional gating to your progress. That leads into the next issue I have with this game: it is still obviously, and frustratingly, an idle time-waster. This game is not far enough removed from games like Cookie Clicker to justify its price. Games with similar hooks (sims-adjacent build-it-yourself biz tycoon/managers) and similar prices do quite a bit more to liven up the experience than this game. With Tavern Master, you can (and will) quickly hit the point where you are just sending several days in a row at max time-speed so you can accrue the cash/tech points (or the menu experience, etc.) to advance. Maybe a slight turning of the knobs (so to speak) here and there, but of the 10 hours I have on record I feel like I had to have spent at least 8 of those just watching my staff zip around at 3x speed. The music is cute and appropriate, but is noticeably repetitive. All this said, the concept of this type of game does absolutely work. This game just needs more polish and attention to detail to justify 15 bucks. The art style is cute, the fonts and menus are all consistent and appropriate. Like I said at the start, this game is very close to having enough soul and charm to justify the price. As is, I would definitely only purchase this game if it were on sale for less than $10. Unless you absolutely can't standing waiting any longer, I'd really try to hold out for $5.Show moreShow less
This game is nice and relaxing. As an older player (62 years) it suits me perfectly. I am always on the lookout for (comparatively) easy-paced games with high replayability and this fits the bill. Not everyone wants to be 100% active 100% of the time. I like games where I decide a few things and then lean back into my chair and watch what happens. It may not be the most deep or complex game in the world at this point in time, but the base game is very well on track, the developer is obviously very responsive and the potential is clearly there. The game feels unique, the music is immersive, the low-poly characters are charming and one of the medieval tavern musicians reminds me of Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull. What's not to like? :) I really enjoy watching the bartenders and the staff going about their business. The addition of a first / third person perspective is also a winner for me. Now we can take pictures! One thing I enjoyed more than anything else was sitting down and playing this game for a couple of hours with my 9-year-old granddaughter, making up names for the staff, setting up the little parties for the VIP visitors, and cheering when the adventurers arrived back with the first cheese. This was OUR tavern! You can't put a price on that. :DShow moreShow less
I am surprised at the high ratings this is getting. It is by not bad, but it does lack depth and game-play. There just isn't much here. It is mostly a set and forget experience. It would be great if there were different taverns and scenarios to bring a tavern back from the brink of failure or open a tavern near a dwarf or elf village where you must develop sell exotic drinks and food to you clients. I hope there is more in store for this game. Right now it just feels like early access. Not bad, but far from good and really far from feeling like a complete game. No story, no ending, no scenarios, no interaction with staff and customers and no personality. The whole game just fell flat for me, but it does feel like there is a framework here that something great could be built on.Show moreShow less
At this time i played the game for roughly 20 hours in an earlier version. My only gripe was that it was a little lacking in depth back then, but that changed for the release version in every aspect of the game. What hooked me at first glance was the atmosphere and the weird kind of nostalgica the game gave me. It felt like a game i would have loved to play 30 years ago (i am old) but didn't had the technic for. We got a pretty Tavern Builder with fantastic lightning, music and atmosphere that gives you alot of freedom to build things the way you like it. That comes with a shortage of a storyline or a final goal, what i appreciate alot in this kind of game. Its again the nostalgic thingy, build what you like and make your own story in your head-rp (like we kinda did 30 years ago, when we've built our toys from stones and sticks out of the forest, lul). When you like to build the Tavern of your dreams without too many restrictions in a vibrant medieval setting, this is the game for you. There is enough to do for many hours, its sandboxy enough for several playthroughts (or one very long, you can basically play indefinite if you wish so). Considering what changed over the course of the last 2-3 months, the best thing is that its not only a complete game, but also a solid base for things to come. I rarely saw such an advancement in such a short amount of time in an indiegame with this development team size (1). (Have i mentioned the fair price?... ah well, lets not talk about nasty things like money.) So... are you ready to build your very own Tavern? "The Old Dwarf" is welcoming its customers.Show moreShow less
How do none of these reviews mention that the game has NO SOUND outside of the music and menu clicks? No chairs scraping against the wooden floor as they're pulled out, the tavern door squeaking open and slamming shut, beer pouring into mugs, clanging pots and pans, roaring fires. None of that. Also there's a giant video ad playing on the main menu for their new game that you can't stop or hide.Show moreShow less
If you need a game where you can play with the mouse only (99% of the time anyway) and you need to be able to get up/look away at a moments notice (holding/feeding a baby) then this is the game for you. I love it. Progression is well paced, there aren't a million stats and inventories to juggle, and the music/crowd noise works really well for putting a kid to sleep. 10/10 from this dad.Show moreShow less
Too bad that there's no middle ground between good and bad for review, but here it is. Game is designed well, in term of visual details, variety of elements well balanced together and so on. That allows game to flow well... until it gets to the mid to late game. The problem I found with the game is, once you get to the mid-late game point, you have nothing to do but beat meaningless quest that serves no purpose (if anything, they hinder you from doing what you want) and look at your money going up. I know it is relatively new game, but it is very evident that content dries out quickly. Also, some of the things (like more floors, unlimited bars, kitchens) are blocked behind the very late game research, which takes forever to unlock. It becomes very boring to continuously pass the time, until those research progresses. Until more content is added to make it more worthwhile, I will be slightly more inclined to not recommend this game to others than recommend it. I really hope more content will be added in not too distant future, as I still think this is one of the better tavern tycoon type games.Show moreShow less
