Since no one else is jumping to review this game, i suppose I will. It's solid. It's not the best and it clearly needs some work, primarily in the graphical portions of the game (water clips through ships and the waves can be higher than towns sometimes. It's odd watching a wall of water pass through your ship without the ship reacting to it). Gameplay on the other hand is very similar to games like Sid Meier's Pirates or Windward just with more focus on questing and you sailing back and forth throughout the world for reasons I'll not spoil here. There is a heavy focus on Sea Combat so you won't have any boarding actions or land battles like in Sid Meier's Pirates. You sail the boat using WASD and your cannons are fired automatically. Basically, you have a certain firing arc on your ship which you need to keep on the enemy ship and then they will fire after a few seconds. Theoretically, you could fire both sides of your ship as long as you keep both within the firing arc. So gameplay is pretty simple from what I've seen so far. You've also got some pretty intense customization in the game and as you pick up bigger and better ships, you'll also be able to get more things to customize your ship with (Flags, Sail colors/designs, hull designs or color patterns etc). Your crew can also get injured and gain experience which affects the efficiency of your ship and how you perform in combat. You can hire new crewman by sailing into port, going to a "tavern" and dragging them onto your ship for a nominal fee. It's all pretty standard stuff for the "Pirate" Genre but it does do some pretty cool things with passive bonuses (Artifacts, skilled crewmen etc) that you might not see in other Pirate games. And I think that's what sets Tempest apart from games like Windward, you can really make your Pirate ship your own... think Pirates of the Burning Sea levels of customization, which is cool. For an early access game, this one is looking pretty good. Honestly my main complain is just the water clipping through stuff, it's crazy distracting. Also, watch out for freaking Krakens. They are definitely out there. First Impressions Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7PJXV-b35AShow moreShow less
This game has a bit of a problem I'd call 'flash game syndrome' which is where the mechanics or gameplay itself is so shallow or basic it kinda feels like it's not worth continuing to see what better stuff you might get. It compares to a crappy pay to win mobile game called assassins creed pirates, where the utterly obnoxious ability to pay to unlock things has been replaced with, well, nothing except the same boring hauling and fighting. It was amazing for the first hour, but as my path to progression became more clear, I could not even imagine dealing with yet more grind to even consider trying to even remotely upgrade or even replace my ship. It has a token trading system with randomized supply and demand, combat so lackluster that it literally has an auto-determine if you want to skip it, and unimaginable grind. I suppose I had no idea what I was getting into with this, despite resarching it before purchasing it, I sincerely didn't get what I was hoping for.Show moreShow less
Q: Why is being a pirate so addictive? A: Because when ye lose yer hand, ye get hooked! 'Tempest: Pirate Action' takes us to a timescape where the tantalizing tall tales of tanalised tallship tars turn true! This is one of my favourite PC games to date, along with 'The Pirate: Caribbean Hunt' and 'Naval Action'. That's partly because I love square-rigger sailing ships and 1700s maritime history and lore. Of these three games, I consider Tempest the most imaginitive and atmospheric. This open world game is much better than I expected, based on the YouTube reviews. Various aspects of the game have been much improved since those reviews were posted. The ship-capturing boarding action, for example, is now vastly better, with fully mobile, realistic fighting characters, one of which, you fully control, so you can take part in the melee, close and personal, from a 3rd-person perspecive. That's something that neither 'Naval Action' nor 'The Pirate: Caribbean Hunt' can boast. The skill levels required to sail and do battle are lower than in 'The Pirate Caribbean Hunt, and very much lower than in 'Naval Action'. Visually, the game is a mixture of extremely good and somewhat below par. The artistry and design of the interface, controls, charts, equipment and crew members are superb. The coastal scenery is imaginative and beautiful, with dramatic rock formations, waterfalls, volcanoes, giant statues and excellent-looking fortresses. The close-up deck views and the boarding action are also excellent, with good-looking crew members, moving very realistically. I like that the art style leans towards realism rather than the cartoonishness seen in some pirate games, such as 'Sid Mier's Pirates'. I like that the unmodified ships are authentic-looking and not outlandishly stylised, such as those in 'Skull & Bones'. I like also that they sink realistically, and that you can actually see the holes appear in their sails, as you shred them with bar shot. On the other hand, certain aspectsof the graphics are crying out for improvement: The ships often look too grey and colourless and slightly blurred. The sea looks unrealistic in some scenes, being occasionally too lurid, too transparent or too colourless, depending on the lighting. (Tip: You can make the sea look less transparent by reducing the graphics quality of the sea to a notch below maximum.) Most of all, the way the ships ride the waves needs work. They rock and roll on the waves in a twitchy, jerky fashion, occasionally levitating out of the water or sinking beneath the surface. I think the game would be improved considerably if those all-too-frequent rough seas were subdued. The ships don't seem able to keep pace with 300-ft waves, and being tossed around on them like a cork so frequently, gets mentally tiring. And I'm running out of Dramamine! Aside from these visual shortcomings, I find this game highly captivating and fun. The sea battles are exhilarating and satisfying, once you develop the necessary skills. Until then, fear not; you don't lose lock stock and barrel if you become fish-food for the dreaded denizens of the deep. No; you'll simply need to replenish or heal a few crew members, after your ship has been automagically resurrected from Davy Jones' locker. There are a number of different factions populating the three sea charts (a.k.a. "maps" to greenhorns and landlubbers). Your standing with each of them rises or falls, depending on your privateering activities. Besides the availability of numerous ship types to try, there's a generous variety of interesting weapons and ammunition types to suit differing tactics. The game always offers a wide choice of rewarding quests and missions. Or you can do your own thing, scouring the open world for bounteous booty. One of my main motivations has been to settle on a favourite ship, kitted out with the best combination of equipment upgrades and ammunition types. Now I have found the magic combination, there is no ship type in the game that I can't capture easily. Eventually, I increased the 'difficulty' setting to maximum (in game options), but was disappointed to find no noticeable increase in difficulty! I could still bolt behemoth battleships for breakfast, as easily as in the previous setting. Unfortunately, when a game becomes that easy, it starts to lose appeal. So I hope the devs address this soon, before too many skilled players switch to 'Naval Action' for something more challenging. Wind direction doesn't have enough impact on ships' directional capabilities for true realism. (They are able to sail directly against the wind, albeit more slowly.) In all good sailing simulators, you have to 'tack' to make headway against the wind, as in real life. Oh, and cannons can shoot straight through large rocks, so don't bother hiding behind them! Some of the game's sound effects could be better, too. I keep hearing what sounds like someone rapping a cheap door knocker; I think it's supposed to emulate musket fire, but it sounds more like an airgun. Mortar fire sounds like someone slamming a cupboard door. When two ships collide, it sounds like... well, nothing on earth. The sea and background noises sound like they were recorded in a sea cave with a short echo, which sounds odd and inappropriate. Thankfully, the above ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ are largely mitigated by the games' reasonable price tag. It still provides great entertainment, especially if, like me, you are hungry for halfway-decent age of sail seafaring games. DLC expansion packs are also available, if you thirst for extra vistas to explore and loot. So, anchors aweigh, and happy privateering! ...from a qualified sailing skipper who grew up within sight of Admiral Thomas Hardy's monument, near Blackbeard's refuge, Moonfleet, where the elders still talk like pirates. (Oooo-AAAARGH!!) PIRATE KNOWLEDGE EXAM: Q: What has 4 legs, 4 arms and 4 eyes? A: 8 pirates. Q: What happened when Bluebeard fell overboard in the Red Sea? A: He got marooned. Q: Why don’t pirates shower before they walk the plank? A: Because they’ll wash up on shore later. _,.-~-.,_,.-~-.,_,.-~-.,_,.-~-.,_,.-~-.,_,.-~-.,_,.-~-.,_ >>Please give my review a 'thumbs up' if you deem it helpful. Many thanks.<<Show moreShow less
i read some stunning reviews for this , they were ....... missleading / game is a gellphone game either ported to pc or designed to sell to cellphone users ... i really wish steam had a catagory for that so i could ignore these types of games. And comeing to that i should have done more research on it before the purchase. Game has a strange combat system which i thought would have the same feel as rebal galaxy but it doesnt due to the enemy fire arcs being almost 4x wider then your own and you pretty much "swipe" for everything... i have to say im really a little put out by trying to remain positive game is fast with loading and the graphics are pleaseing i guess. negatives computer has endless artifact use ,uses op ammo endleslly you do not have access to till later in game and then it starts useing the next tier so you will never be "on parr" , will drop random bosses on you so you are now fighting 2 cheating enemies and a big fish that can instant kill you . But every game cheats to keep the challenge for players so ... again its a annoyance that you see it and you know its there .The man isnt behid the curtain hes out front in a tank while you hold a butterknife. Missions drop some good loot but the missions dont end with the loot drop you often spend more gold then what you get from the missions attempting to complete the mission and therefore should be avoided and shoud be considred for the most part money sinks.. The only reason to do missions is to earn faction rep of which you will earn more by simply buying the faction flag equiping it and auto fighting . Tradeing is bad I only found one trade run that actualy made any sort of money. The only part to this game which seems to have any draw for me is the ship customisation ... with the prices however you could possbily spend the day just grinding auto fights "purchaseing ammo" for a spike in your ship that appears to do nothing but look kewl . If you do decide to buy the game you really dont want to fight those random encounters just auto them its quicker you will kill 20 and earn 10x more $ comparrison to 1 fight you may not win its really not worth it. This game is a top down turn based strat with some rpg elements but its not about your ship and you its all about your crew which for the most part you will ned to replace half of every hour if you dont like auto fighting aka you will waste exp upgradeing crew alot of expbecuase the will die alot.. Is it sidmieyers pirates no not even close it dosnt even have the depth of windward if you really want a indepth pirate game you would be better off playing warbands pirates then this. However if you only have a cellphone to play on i guess this would do fine its a coin flip really .Show moreShow less
I'd recommend this as a visual novel more than an action game. You do spend 90% of the game swimming laps around other ships and 9% of the game running through empty jungle (if you get the Jade expansion), but the 1% of the time you spend reading the story is amazing. Someone with a really bright imagination and love of sailing lore invested a lot of their talent into the short paragraphs of adventuring text. The rest of the game carries off the feel of a sailing adventure rather well, but turns tedious quickly due to repetitiveness, buggy movement, and unrefined programming. But if you find sailing laps while poisoning crews to be relaxing, it's an easy game to set aside and come back to when you need a little piracy refresher course. Pros: - excellent world crafting - excellent writing - good ambience - fun music - proper pirate adventure feel - epic seamonsters - excellent art - runs on low-end computers Cons: - random deaths without proper warning - tedium during battle - rep-based quest grinding - pointlessly grindy achievements - deadly spawning oopses - terrible melee mechanics - quest progression requires waiting (a lot) - faceless factions (cool back story, but dunno who's who) - poor quest directions - quest marker overload Beginner Recommendations: - always sail with the Order flag - get your Poison Asp buff first - get your Pirate rep to 100 first - don't spawn in the middle of crab quests - don't spawn in the middle of fort questsShow moreShow less
I like the idea of the game and how it plays but the people behind just make seriously wierd choices. One quest has a ship that you can kill and you must repeatedly die until someone gives you a magic device to make it stop, this can cost you thousands in repair, dead crew and sometimes you lose rare expensice artifacts. The first update was great and contained things that people wanted but update 3 just threw all that away and made it twice as hard. They raised the cost of repairs, ships, death penalty while simultaneously lowering loot, accuracy, ship base stats and not letting you escape for 30 seconds. Avoid this game until some serious work has been done, I dont recall hearing about pirates/navys having to be careful with the amount of cannonballs they were firing because their accuracy was only 63% and the loot gained wouldn't cover the cost of the cannonballs fired!Show moreShow less
Tempest is an open-world adventure in which you captain a vessel through the open seas. You complete quests and there's a loosely connected story through said quests, but for the most part, you'll be sailing here or there and taking part in ship-to-ship combat. .Game play. You can use the WASD keys or the mouse in order to guide your ship. While doing so, you have the option of watching movement via a map overview or the 3D rendered ship, which can be seen in third or first person point of view. In ports, you can hire more men, buy supplies, and pick up quests. Quests range from fetch quests to exploring certain areas of the map. Some have a bit of story attached to them and you'll also meet new characters. You'll be rewarded money, supplies, and crew for completing quests. Along your travels you'll face random encounters and, based on your point of view, you can handle them in different ways. If you're looking at the map overview, you can click "auto" and the battle will be resolved based on your health, crew, cannonballs available, etc. Otherwise, you can use the button in the bottom left corner in order to zoom into the 3D view and battle in real time. Your cannons fire from the sides of your ship, which means combat consists of trying to flank your opponent while using the space bar to fire your weapons once they've been loaded. You can use the mouse or the WASD keys to maneuver, but you'll still need to fire with the space bar. You can switch ammunition on the fly, but keep in mind that will reset your reload time. Reload speed can be altered, but doing so is a matter of risk and reward: faster reload speed means lower accuracy and conversely, slower reload speed means higher accuracy. Your ship is heavy and cumbersome (this isn't just some dinky sailboat!), so much of your time will be spent trying to find just the right positioning. It's fun, but I soon found myself hitting the auto button rather than engaging as battles can take a while to complete. You've also got a ship log with various information: *Faction's attitude towards you: there are various factions you'll be attempting to sway and your relationship will decide who will attack you and who won't. *Reputation: there are five possible reputations you can have for the various things you do. For instance, the spider is combat-related. It's called "paralyzing spider" and it allows you to deal twice as much damage to enemy sails. Reputation acts as perks that develop based on your play style, essentially. *Game Progress: this covers how much of the map you've explored, the number of quests you've done, and how many hidden goodies you've uncovered in addition to how far you've traveled. *Economy: how much in-game currency (Piastres) you've earned in one way or another and how much you've sold. *Combat Actions: how many cannonballs fired, how frequently you've missed, how many enemies you've destroyed, how many times you've destroyed--and so on. Nothing too out of the ordinary here. Your logs also keep track of your active quests, and the statistics of your ship and crew. -My one complaint would be that there's not much of a tutorial for fighting or trading or... Anything, really. Leaving the tutorial box checked in the options menu means you'll get brief messages during battle or exploration regarding what can or should be done--without an adequate description of *how* you should go about doing those things. .Soundtrack. The ambient sounds are great. The crash of waves and the crack of thunder are tumultuous and they reflect the name of the game rather well. You'll also hear bells ring, seagulls cry, and the occasional shout of your men. The background music leaves a bit to be desired as it's a single track that replays over and over based on the occasion (exploration versus combat, etc). The songs are appropriate for the moments they're used, sure, but I would have preferred more variety. .Graphics/ Art Style. Tempest is beautiful. From the falling rain to the rough, choppy waves, to the ragged, flapping cloth of your sails the game drips with style. .Longevity. Despite the promises of an open world, it only took me a few minutes to sail around about half the map. Still, there are plenty of quests to do, so going between islands and completing them will keep you occupied for a good while. There's also an online mode, though I can't say much about it because I didn't try it. .Bottom Line. Tempest is a swashbuckling good time that will give even the landiest of land lubbers their sea legs. If you're into naval combat and exploration, I can easily recommend this game to you.Show moreShow less
I'm not accusing the devs, but my previous review miraculously disappeared. And yes, it was negative. Pretty fishy. Basically I said the game cleverly misrepresents it's depth in screenshots and trailers. It's mostly ship combat, with almost no customization. It's not terrible, just tedious and grindy after an hour. It's also pretty clearly a port of a mobile game.Show moreShow less
Only issue there is with the game, is the community thinks a Naval action game, with Pirates in it, automatically makes it a "Pirate Game", nope still a Naval action game, just has the option to be a pirate, or a Privateer game, or a Merchant game, or you know a NAVAL ACTION GAME!!!! Shut up about it being a poor "Pirate Game"!! It's not! It's actually a very well put together game, and it's actually still in Early Access, so quit being pansies, because you read something wrong, and don't get what you want, from a non AAA game company game; that, you know, is simply just awesome. Edit: last played 2019, game has changed massively since then, this review holds no weight anymore.Show moreShow less
Score : 55-60/100 Unfortunately it is ""NOT"" a full pirates game. If you're looking for a real pirates game this one will disappointed you. Good points: - Graphic is acceptable -Ship easy upgrade -Some of the special items were good designed -Ship fighting is ok ( Only to those who just enjoy firing cannon balls ) -Auto picking up design -Time speed up design Weak points : ***One of the greatest weak point is : this game have "NO" save and worst of all .......there're traps that didn't looks like a trap that we will lost 1/4 or even 1/2 of our most experience crews without warning !!!!! >0< . Though we can still play the game without a save file. ***The camera : we can just pull the camera a little further from our ship, our view is very limited. Camera position is one of the MOST MOST important part in this game. ***NOT a good design about checking the wind direction and the wind speed. -Tutorial is weak, it didn't teach us all we need to know (even something that we should know) -I cannot check my skill level and my ship state easily, it seems that as a ship captian I know only little about myself and my ship -Ship detail is incomplete -No warehouse stock break down. -Cannot check mission data inside the port -Not all mission locations will show on the map -Didn't have a full detaild map to check. (the small map is useless, no island's name) -Moving from map to map is troublesome and annoying -Cannot chose the cannon call we want to use beore battle start. Also if there is a stop firing icon it will be good. (Useful before boarding) -We can capture ships but the tutorial didn't teach us all about it. ***The control setting is ........... Under some settings I cannot save those new settins. The arrow keys control the looking directions while controlling the direction of the ship at the same time. So while I am looking around my course change ....and ......hit on rocks !!! I cannot use arrow keys to (just) look around and during bording fight. ***We can ""ONLY"" have one ship !!!!!!!!!! Pirates go out hunting should be with ships !!!!! *After recruiting a junior crew, we cannot fire him and recruit a more experience crew later on ( but we can accidiently fire our most experience crew ""without"" warning ) **Boarding ship : We've very limited control. No strategy plan. But not too boring. **The bording battle started before I draw my sword . And those backup crews is useless * Easy to pick up the wrong choice after the boarding. **Even before boarding we cannot adjust our boarding crew size if we're close to an enemy ship -We cannot save/repair ally ship ***Pirates cannot loot towns or villages here !!!!! >0< **There is a bug, after a battle or open another window program, I've to explore the whole map again. Very annoying. *Boring missions. Inorder to earn money and influence, we've to do some missions for 10, 20 times. And mission detail is incompete.1. For some missions we don't know where to go. 2. For some missions we have to sink sink sink ships, after we've sank 50 ships, we still don't know how many more we need to sink inorder to START that mission. *The cannon fire aiming highlight is hard to see and ** it doesn't appear before completed the cannon loading *Ally ships crash on my ship very often (even it's not during battle ). And they land mines next to my ship while enemy ship is still far away. (the AI is .......>.<) **Sea battles : Someimes my ship started with full speed, in which I don't wanted to. (The program place my ship next to a mine field). Whereas, during sea battles, my ship started with ZERO speed as a sitting duck !! **Camera position : It will change to "fire cannon ball animation" after we've fire to an enemy ship , thus, we cannot see our surrounding for 2 seconds. perfer not having that animation. Also, I need to reset it everytime just after I enter a new mission map. It wasted my time. *** The killing monster V mission is ...................... the camera direction always change I cannot even see my ship. My ship's location always change I don't my direction. We're force to die once for this mission. -Ship speed : I cannot catch up with enemy's warship II (speed 8). Even I've 12 added on to my speed. Enemy captain's skill point = mine ???? -Some of the chinese translation are wrong. ( Inside setting window and missions) If you're looking for a real/full pirates game, ""NO"", I don't recomment this game. If you just want to fire cannon balls, this game is ok. I love firing cannon balls unfortunately its not a complete pirates game. After 140 hours playing, I've finish 7/21 Treasure Hunter mission and find 1 Oscar only >.<Show moreShow less
