Disclaimer: I'm a Kickstarter backer of Temtem, and have been playing the alpha for a long time. I like to think that it means I'm more critical of the game, as I want to make sure I got my money's worth. There's one thing everyone wants to know: How does Temtem compare to Pokemon? Well, let's take a quick look. What Pokemon does better Recognizable characters and character design. You can argue that more recent generations of Pokemon have been a little iffy with design (ice cream mons, keyring mons...), but they have public awareness on their side. It's tough to go against the likes of pikachu, though Temtem has a few that could be the cute attention grabber (like Platypet). Polish. Game Freak have been doing this for a very long time now, and have the financial support of a powerhouse (uncle Nintendo) which gives them the time and experience to get the "feel" right. Even if you're not a fan of SW/SH, you can't deny that things like the gym fights aren't super hype. Modernization. Sword and Shield did away with a lot of clunky old mechanics, notably random encounters, instead letting you see mons in the wild and letting you choose whether to go for them. This was a fantastic idea. Temtem, however, uses the old-school route of grass RNG, which may be frustrating when you're seeking out a particular temtem or just want to get from A to B quickly. What Temtem does better Tactics and competitive play. Temtem fights are 2v2, and choosing a pair that synergizes well against your opponent is key. Certain moves are enhanced or adjusted based on their teammate; for instance, having a fire ally can set some of your earth attacks on fire or boil water attacks, making them massively more damaging and debuffing the enemy. Temtem uses a typical STAB system, and has half, double, as well as quad damage type match-ups, so it's vital to pay attention. Certain items can also switch the type of particular moves. Multiplayer. Right from the start, you'll notice other players running around the world. Duelling, chatting, and making friends is much better in Temtem, which is designed around social play. A nice touch is letting players run around with a temtem buddy beside them, so you can show off your fave temtem to other players — very nice if you're lucky enough to catch a luma (shiny)! Longevity. By not being locked into a cycle of pushing out a new game every few years like Pokemon, Temtem can instead continue to evolve, adding new content such as cosmetics, new temtem and new areas to explore over time. In the end, I'd definitely recommend jumping in and giving it a shot. If you're still on the fence about Temtem, just look into it more — check out some streams, look through the online tempedia, and see what people on Reddit are saying. If you end up playing, give me (Boss) a wave if you see me!Show moreShow less

I would normally recommend this game, however the way the devs handle bans is absolutely absurd. After having not played for around a month, I got a permaban notification (26 March 2020). I appealed the ban through the process outlined on their Twitter page, having absolutely no idea what I've done wrong. I have never traded let alone traded hackers/exploiters, I have never bred a Temtem, I wouldn't even begin to know about any exploits, I don't know how to bot, and I don't use macros. I don't even use mods in Minecraft because it feels like cheating, let alone *actual cheating*. I had a friend log in to check my player ID from their friend list and my last date of play just to verify no one else had logged in with my account. The support person essentially said that there were multiple breaches of terms of service, and told me, quote, "With that in mind, you should have a clear idea of which were the actions that led you to this suspension." They then told me that no further correspondence would occur and that the ticket was closed. This process is incredibly unfair. Not only can I not play a game I paid for for no discernible reason, it also adds a game ban flag on your Steam profile page as well. The fact that they believe so firmly in the infallibility of their ban system is pure hubris and does a HUGE disservice to their customers. I'm sorry, but unless this changes, there is no way I could recommend playing a game by this company. UPDATE: I created a Reddit account and messaged the community manager, who was incredibly kind (this is NOT the described appeal process and I do not want anyone to flood them with appeal messages). When I logged into Steam today (27 April 2020) I got a message stating, "Your In-Game Ban in Temtem has been removed. We've removed the incorrectly applied In-Game Ban on behalf of the Temtem team." I haven't heard anything from the support team so I can only assume that they've found it was a false flag after all. The removal of my ban, while providing me relief (this whole thing has made me sick to my stomach), unfortunately does not change my review. I would be hard pressed to recommend someone buy this after spending just over a month (26 March to 27 April) banned incorrectly. As things change I may update this, but for now it remains. UPDATE 2: As of 2 September 2021 the ban system and practice is functionally the same, more than a year later. It doesn't look like this will ever be changed at this point, and with that in mind I absolutely 100% cannot recommend this purchase. TL;DR The ban system is unfair and hits people who haven't abused the system in any way with an unfair appeals process. I have since been unbanned, however as far as I can see the system is the same. EDIT FOR CLARIFICATION: I am not a streamer, the comments and helpful votes are not from my "army of followers" as some commenters have stated. This review is about the ban and appeals process and policy, not whether you believe I'm innocent or not.Show moreShow less
I would rate it a tem out of tem.Show moreShow less
Too many reviews are about what the game will become, not what it is currently. It's a Temtem game but with the attributes of an MMO --gated areas, heavy grind in wild grass for leveling, and everything is expensive to extend/dilute the gameplay time. I'll review it both on its gameplay loops, and as an MMO. The core gameplay loops of this game are: -Temtem capturing Pretty great, unfortunately there aren't many Temtem right now, and I notice many of the abilities are missing attack animations...I hope it's just unfinished. -Temtem fighting Harder, and more complex than Pokemon. Unfortunately, you'll run out of trainers quickly and will be forced to do 80% of your leveling in the wild grass or water. I recommend developers let players rechallenge trainers they've beaten, its a low development cost to improve the leveling experience. -Temtem breeding. Unfortunately, if you join the game as it is today - you will be unable to participate in breeding. Recent updates have made breeding costs nigh-impossible to earn. MMO / World Qualities Quests - *Terrible*, they're ALL "fetch this" and "go talk to person X" quests. And my god, why? Do you think players enjoy running between two NPCs that are 5 minutes apart, back and forth?! This is honestly inexcusable, if developers are reading this, STOP making anymore of these fetch quests. Sometimes *less* is *more*. World - A bunch of small islands, quick to explore, and you will find yourself running back and forth. One of the worst components of most MMOs, since the world is static and there are no dynamic events occuring...so you'll be spending a good chunk of your time just walking. Microtransactions- The publisher is Humble Bundle and the economy is *very* grind intensive. You could spend weeks earning enough to buy ONE shirt. This all leads me to expect we'll be seeing a microtransaction store by some point. I understand companies, especially with MMOs, need to make money. But you've already paid ***$35*** dollars, I should not have to grind for weeks to buy a SHIRT, or have a HAIRSTYLE for my character. Mounts are planned...so you can imagine what that means. Sigh. Overall, Temtem is an MMO, including all the cons of what comes with that. Would be great gameplay loops if they were well designed and not running in the grass over, and over. Breeding is completely locked off for the majority of the player base, due to costs. And the world feels quite small, and not with a lot of Temtem. Multiplayer is nonexistent. There are no community or public chats to say hello to someone you're running by. I imagine this it to avoid having a public chat that requires moderation and a report system. However, that is not an excuse for an MMO game in 2020. It truly is an early access game, so don't be surprised when its not the vast world of catchable creatures you were hoping for. Will update as development progresses. (Wanted to add a quick edit, something to keep in mind. Yes, this is an early access game, and it could still be a great creature collection game. With that said, many of the MMO aspects of the game are heavily ingrained into its gameplay loops--and are unlikely to change. As an MMO, yes, it will be compared to other MMOs out on the market. The sole quality that seperates Temtem from other MMOs, is that it is the creature-collecting game most gamers have been wishing for. However, in every other aspect (quests, open world & level design, social experience, graphics, audio, etc.) the game falls short. The islands feel small, the fetch quests are dull and tedious and the world is static and gated. Some of the issues stem from it's awkward mix of single-player & MMO foundation. And by compromising between the two, it misses being great in either category. Sure you could send random battle requests to players around you, but why? The game doesn't reward or encourage you to fight other players, it would be purely for roleplay value. And if you're a single-player kind of player, you'll quickly find you run out Temtem trainers. It unfortunately misses the target for both.)Show moreShow less

I was banned by the devs after staying up until 3 AM playing this game for a week straight. I sunk 100 hours into the game within the first 2 weeks of owning the game...... I genuinely enjoyed the game and its why I would stay up until 2-3 AM after getting home at 6 PM the night before, but the devs claim I was "botting" on the game..... If I didnt enjoy the game I could understand that, but I wouldnt even bother to play it at that point, just like the fact that botting would take all the fun out of the game. the devs will ban people that genuinely sink time into the game...... wat......Show moreShow less
