This game is great. I'm 54 and old time gamer, but I cannot keep up with some of the newer games as they are just too fast pace and very little room for error or exploration. This game matches what I like in a game, perfectly. The story is good, dialog not drawn out, and game play just difficult enough to be challenging at times and VERY FUN. This is highly recommended for Terminator fans and older FPS players.Show moreShow less
The game successfully (and immersively) represents the original Terminator series better than any other game I've seen. So I might suggest this to fans of Terminator series but you may better wait for a price reduction. But the game lacks the good features of many modern FPS'. Actually, I am tempted to give a thumbs up for this one, but I think it would not be fair against some of the other FPS' I've played. Cons: 1. AI is the biggest con here. Machines patrol the area following strict patterns and they never surprise you. It is very easy to bait just any machine using the same tricks over and over again. Missions are no where challenging. Even on Extreme difficulty. Machines do act like the synths of Fallout 4. The only thing is they never take cover or try to flank you. I can say that Fallout 4's synths were much more clever compared to the T-800 versions you'll see in this game. 2. Somewhat short campaign. I finished the game on extreme difficulty setting (and completed all side quests I've found) in just 10 hours. I've reloaded the game a couple of times per mission as I got killed because of my own carelessness. 3. Some missions may become repetitive and boring after some time. Especially those covert ops missions that you play alone (without the aid of resistance NPCs). This is partly because the AI is always predictable. 4. The player can become a pack-mule :D. I mean your inventory is restricted only by the volume of the objects not their count or weight. Weapons occupy two blocks and other items occupy just one. You can literally carry over 100 laser guided missiles for instance. Or 500 scrap metals for crafting. This makes the game even easier. 5. There is no multiplayer. So when you complete the 10 hour campaign you are left with nothing else to do. 6. Weapon balance is broken. Some weapons (such as the plasma minigun versions) are obviously better than the others that unlock on the same mission. You can play the entire game with a sniper and a minigun. 7. Lockpicking mini-game is the exact copy of the same mini game from Bethesda games. (Skyrim, Fallout 3-4). 8. Many good FPS mechanics (like taking cover, leaning over cover, and auto-animation jumping over obstacles) are missing in this game (both for the player and the machine NPCs). It is a classic Half-Life 1 style FPS. But I think it does not fit the environment very well. I would rather prefer a Rainbow-Six like mechanics here. 9. There is a skill tree in the game but it seemed redundant as the good skill choices were quite obvious. And close to the end of the game you always get enough levels to pick every single skill. Some skills were quite useless.Like Fast Learner giving +% bonus experience or Toughness giving +% damage reduction. Toughness was useless for extreme difficulty as you'll get killed in 2-3 shots anyway. And having toughness does not increase your surivability by a big deal. Pros: 1. Biggest one is the atmosphere. If you put AI aside you do feel like you are in the Terminator universe which is fun. 2. Effort is put to the backgrounds and stories of the NPC characters you meet during the game. They are believable and interesting. I believe you can slightly alter the course of the game by the decisions you take while you are talking with these NPCs. But I am not sure if it only changes the end-game cutscenes. 3. Missions where you are aided by other Resistance NPC soldiers and advance as a unit against waves of Machines were fun. 4. No bugs I've encountered in the game. It is a fluid campaign experience for 10 hours without a single problem.Show moreShow less
Simply put, this is the best Terminator game ever made. OG Terminator fans owe it to themselves to play this. Pros: Clearly developed by people who love the first two films. Packed with fan service. Authentic sounding and looking weapons. Visuals capture the feeling of a post nuclear holocaust LA. Soundtrack is fantastic. You can adopt a stray dog and name it Max (or Wolfie). Cons: Gameplay is way too easy. Visuals can be inconsistent. If you're not a Terminator fan, you won't appreciate a lot of the content. It's only 8 hours long. I think the idea of the game is great and the story seems pretty good so far, but it kind of feels like I'm playing a game from 10-15 years ago. The character models and graphics seem pretty good, but the animations are very clunky, and the movement and shooting is awkward. That all being said, I'm only putting in the negative review for the somewhat dated gameplay, I believe the majority of the other recommendations to be positive largely because of the fact that it is a terminator game and it is accurate to the original franchise. For that I have respect for it, but I just personally do not have such a deep connection to the terminator world and cannot recommend it for others who similarly do not have as close a connection.Show moreShow less

I honestly feel like all the positive reviews for this game are from fan's totally blinded by nostalgia or are paid off. I'm a fan of the terminator franchise, but its so bad on so many levels. To put this game simply, its Fallout 4, less buggy but far worse in every respect. I'm a fan of the terminator franchise, so keep that in mind while reading this review. Major issues that struck out to me are Price, graphics, repetitiveness, replayability, Quality of the work, and weak characters/animation. Starting with the price, for what your getting this game charges $50 cad for the PC version and a insane $77, AAA territory, on Console. WHYYY? Are you so greedy treyon to over price a game that's realistically worth $15 or $25 at the most? This point really sours my opinion on this game, I'm glad I got it on sale. What ever you do, DO NOT BUY THIS FOR FULL PRICE! Moving on to Graphics, honestly the graphics are incredibly inconsistent, in some places their fine(IE the weapons and the T-800's), every where else the quality, you could easily mistake Terminator: Resistance as a 360/PS3 title(sometimes worse like the plasma turrets). Heck even, some 360 titles have superior graphics by comparison. The texturing in this game is quite simply painfully bad for something charging AAA prices. I've seen indie or fan games with better graphics than this from developers who work for free with smaller teams than Treyon. In fact, the best graphics and texturing are in the Sex scenes, seriously? You guys need to learn to prioritize, I would've added a few more weapons(which are few, maybe 9 not counting the purple variants since they are simply reskins except the human plasma rifle) or maybe put the money into some motion capture. Though I will praise the atmospheric effects at night, it looks really creepy and fitting(day time is meh, nothing special). One final note in regards to level design, there are tons of invisible walls on the maps that block you from trying to be creative and figure out ways to sneak past the enemy terminators. The maps look really open but in fact not much end up being passable by the player. Next up is repetitiveness, this game gets really repetitive quick. Initially fights can be tense when the T-800s appear and get you cornered. But you'll quickly adapt and realize how utterly brain dead the enemy AI are(EG I had one encounter where I was hiding behind a half broken wall(basically if you crouch behind it, it would hide you barely) and a terminator came into the room I was hiding. It walked within a foot of me. It looked for a moment than turned and left and I killed it easily with a termination knife). The higher you level, the enemies basically become nothing more than a slight inconvenience to your progression even in significant numbers. I actually went to the point of purposefully making it more difficult by challenging myself to hack every turret on the map. The world's that you explore also get repeated in several missions, enforcing the repetitive nature of Resistance. Honestly, unless your such a die hard fan that you don't even care, than at most you might play through this once and then uninstall forever like me. The lock picking is not refined well, the hacking could've benefited from additional refinement, and the crafting was not really vital to the game and could've been left out for polishing the game up in other areas. To simplify, its half baked at best, unnecessary and a waste of time at worst. The quality of this game overall leaves a huge amount to be desired based on the price tag attached to it. If this game was $15 or $20 I'd say this game was worth it, but with the current price that's not the case. From $80 roughly I expect a AAA experience in 2019, this could've been AAA in the 360 era but not in 2019. This quality of product is unacceptable and Treyon shouldn't even need to be told this. The final point of this long review is the characters and their animation. Most of the characters can be generally described as being wood and uninteresting(Jennifer can be a notable exception at times). The animation during the cutscenes is painful to watch, the character expressions and their eyes are totally dead. You might as well be talking to a wall for all the emotion they show. This game could've seriously benefited from a motion capture session or two to properly animate the characters faces and add some believable body language. The voice acting is poor overall, Jennifer and Jacob seem like the only ones who are reasonable. You could've probably reduced the swearing in the script a bunch as well, it seemed very unnecessary to me and added nothing. The positives are as follows: Some of the encounters can be really tense early on by getting cornered by T-800's, the song on the boom box is great, the night atmosphere works really well, and the plasma weapons sound just like the movie(Although there's a caveat to this in that all the plasma weapons sound the same, there should've been more variety in the weapon sounds). The last thing I will add as a positive was watching a single turret I hacked kill an HK aerial, I was laughing for a while. Bringing this long Steam review to a close(congrats if you read through the whole thing, but there was a lot to cover), my overall opinion is that this game is way overpriced for the poor quality of the game itself. This game is simply pandering to nostalgia and thats it, there's no real substance here beyond the few bits of fan service. I'm going to give Terminator: resistance two different ratings because I'm a fan cause that does count for something here. Terminator: resistance non-nostalgia score: 2/10, buy fallout 3/New Vegas/4 its significantly better(except the bugs) and cheaper with a lot more replayablity. Terminator: Resistance nostalgia score: 4/10 It had good moments that I personally enjoyed, This game is poor but there is potential in it. Its just unfortunate that this potential is fairly wasted further pushes that the franchise has run its course sadly.Show moreShow less
Terminator Resistance is essentially what Alien Isolation was to the Alien franchise. A love letter to fans of the series. The Terminator license hasn't been this good since 1991.Show moreShow less
Your character is unable to jump over 2ft high walls, and unable to fire past the 1ft invisible wall which surrounds every piece of terrain (which makes a very unforgiving shooter game much more frustrating). When trying to escape and hide, you will get stuck constantly on terrain. After looting an enemy corpse, you are often "stuck" for several seconds, which often is the difference between life and death. The throwing arc for explosives is fixed, and ridiculous, your character can't throw things "forward", they throw them up at about a 60 degree angle, and given the 1ft invisible wall around all objects, more often than not you will throw a grenade only for it to immediately get stuck on, or bounce off of, what looks like an opening and kill you. Enemies will often T-Pose and slide around, rather than perform walking animations. There are stealth kill options, but for lack of a better phrase these often simply "fail to connect", leaving you standing there with one less item (it costs an item to perform a stealth kill) and with a terminator now turning to punch your head off. The audio balance seems to fluctuate wildly, and I found myself constantly changing audio settings to balance in game SFX with the music, until I gave up and muted the music altogether, rendering every bit of work done on the soundtrack entirely pointless. I know it's a game about literal robots, but terminator AI is pretty poor. They will just slowly funnel themselves around corners even as you throw explosive after explosive. Also, there are save points you can save at, but you die so frequently that any amount of progress needs to be saved, so 50% of your time is spent running to the nearest save point to save, then running back. It quite literally triples the amount of time taken to progress as you have to run all the way back, and then all the way back to where you were. This isn't aided by the fact your character, even when sprinting, is painfully slow. What looks like 60ft takes about 10 seconds to cross at full speed. I can do that at a brisk walk. One of the items in the game is a "noise maker" which is supposed to attract enemies... but it just doesn't work. Instead, the act of throwing it attracts enemies TO YOU, completely defeating its purpose. The fact it is still in the game suggests either no playtesting was done, or playtesting feedback was ignored. One major plot point, the one which pretty much defines the second half of the game, is needing to find a professor who can "unlock" purple plasma weapons for the resistance. However, by that time I had levelled up to a point where I could use purple plasma weapons... the ones terminators drop all over the place. I was shooting enemies with purple plasma weapons in order to... unlock those very weapons. That kind of shattered the fragile immersion for me. Overall a frustrating experience, not recommended.Show moreShow less

If you are in the process of deciding whether or not to purchase this game, allow me to put to you a question: How much are you prepared to sacrifice to indulge your nostalgia? I would automatically not recommend this game to anyone other than those enamoured of the film series - in particular, the first two. Firstly, this game does not provide an engaging and suspenseful first-person shooter challenge. The A.I. is among the weakest, and most easily exploited, that I have encountered in any generation of shooter. Even on the game's hardest difficulty, the majority of my deaths have come from the clunky nature of throwing explosives, coupled with bizarre environmental clipping. Stealth, crafting and "choices-that-matter" interactive options all feel irrelevant to the game's linear passage. The game is at pains to suggest that Pvt. Rivers can use explosives on damaged walls to forge new pathways. Or, Pvt. Rivers could just crawl through the vent conveniently located next to the damaged wall and achieve the same outcome. Choice, for its own sake, does not make a game a viable role-playing experience. Every mission falls into one of two archetypes: 1) Nighttime "stealth" missions involving infiltrating an area laden with terminators, alone, to achieve ostensibly reconnaissance objectives, or: 2) Someone/something has been compromised, during the daytime, and now you and a group of soldiers have to run from point A to point B while shooting at terminators. If this game were the result of an independent gaming company enlivening their own, unique intellectual property, I would be impressed, and would forgive some of the game's flaws. However, the Terminator is a billion-dollar franchise and it's fair that we, as players/consumers, expect better. With that said, I am absolutely a part of the generation that grew up revering the '80s/'90s Terminator films as the high watermark in sci-fi thrillers that they are, so I am likely to play this game again in the next couple of years. However, it's only fair to warn prospective buyers that important parts of the Terminator universe are missing; there is little suspense, dialogue is plodding/inane (it is particularly disappointing that the voice actors give weak performances on top of the tepid screenwriting) and the developers have failed to accurately convey the severity of a post-apocalyptic world. But, as I asked earlier: How much are you prepared to sacrifice to indulge your nostalgia?Show moreShow less
