This is, hands down, the best Python tutorial I've ever seen. Perhaps even the best programming tutorial in general. It applies the good ol' teaching rule that's common in game design: give people mechanics piecemeal, and slowly ramp up the complexity, pushing them to use more mechanics. In this case, mechanics being the elements of the language - loops, variables, functions. Such a great idea. So why the negative review, then? Let's put it like this. If you're looking to learn coding, this review won't be of much value to you. If you already know your way around the Arcane Tongues and like using them to solve more theoretical problems - math problems, algorithm design and so on - same thing. So if you fall into these categories, I actually recommend the game wholeheartedly. It's made for you. Me, however... I am an experienced, professional Arcanist, who's dabbled in many different branches of the Arts. Not much in Python, so I thought, hey, this might be a nice way to practice my chops. Right? Sadly, I see coding as merely a means to an end. I like it, I like engineering a good solution, I love it when your code that you spent the last 5 hours writing just works on the first try. But still, I code because I want to affect reality. I like building stuff. Coding is just an aspect of it. And this game really is just coding. And designing your algorithm. Your reward? Number go up - and that's fine, it's an idle game. But somehow in this case it feels pointless, and I have no idea why. You're writing code to write more code. I can only speak for myself, but in my experience the goal is to write less code. That's why we use libraries, that's why we write reusable functions, and this is why those of us of lesser Aracane affinity began summoning the fickle, unreliable demons to do their work for them: Vibe Wizards, we call them. Still, we share a goal. To summarise: As a coding tutorial? This is absolute peak. As a "coding for the sake of coding" challenge? You betcha. As an idle game? Eeeeh. Nah. And if you're one of the Ancients who once tasted the intoxicating ambrosia that is Colobot and has been looking for another sip for the past decade... move along, brother. This ain't it. Had no experience with coding at all when I first played. The game taught me almost everything I needed to know to get through it.Show moreShow less
It isn't a pure programming game. It's an idle-like game where you use programming to do stuff. You have to grind and wait to unlock language constructs. - The language is pretty much Python. - You start only with the bare minimum and have to unlock everything else, loop statements, comparators, variables, etc. - The UI is awful on 1080p. Text is too big and while you can scale it the resource indicators will pretty much disappear while text is still filling up the entire screen. I can't imagine playing this on a laptop. I don't get the target audience of this game. If you already know how to code it is boring (the early game at least). If you want to learn it's not user friendly and you would be much better playing with PyCharm and the thousand of learning resources which are better and available for FREE.Show moreShow less
Kind of awesome, a great example of gamification where the player feels like he is just having fun but is actually learning basic programming principles and some basic python. I only wish i could choose from additional programming languages, then i would happily play the whole game again in e.g. c++Show moreShow less
its not basic enough, I don't understand why its doing what its doing, I don't understand what to do after doing the first thing. I don't understand what the errors mean. Don't buy the game if you're stupid like me.Show moreShow less
I had a blast with this game! As a professional programmer with solid Python experience, I breezed through most of it pretty easily. But even without the challenge factor, it was still a ton of fun. If you're finding yourself stuck on certain puzzles, that's totally normal—embrace it! The whole joy of programming is working through tough problems. All of us developers hit walls constantly, sometimes spending days on a single issue. But man, when you finally crack it? That moment when everything clicks and your code actually works? There's nothing quite like it. Here's my advice: when you're stuck, don't just hunt for game-specific solutions online. Treat it like a real Python programming problem. Say you need to handle each farm column differently—instead of searching "Farmer was Replaced columns," look up how to iterate through columns in Python or ask ChatGPT about working with 2D arrays. The game's language is close enough to actual Python that real programming solutions will translate directly. Also, get comfortable with print() statements—they're a developer's best friend. Throw print("checkpoint reached") at the start of functions to confirm they're actually running. If your not seeing it, then you know where the problem is. Print your variables too, so you can see what data you're actually working with. One more thing: you can print function outputs to inspect them. Like, get_world_size() returns a value, but you won't see it unless you print(get_world_size()). Super useful for testing and understanding what your code is doing. Enjoy the game and happy coding!Show moreShow less
I really want to recommend it and it hurts me that i can't, at least not for the target audience: those who want to learn to code. The game just has some noticeable flaws. If you already know some coding are just looking for a game where you write code, then it's worth a try. Some of the most common issues i encountered: - Leaving off parentheses for a function does not throw an error, the code will execute and usually do things you didn't intend. Similarly adding a space between a function name and the parentheses will break the code in the same way, and once again you will not get an error message - Breakpoints stay at the same line number instead of the code if you insert or remove lines above it - in other words, you lose the breakpoints you intended when you work on your code and get new unintended breakpoints. Yikes! - Some other minor improvements i think could be made: I'd really like to see info on arguments when typing a function without having to hover the mouse over it. And i'd also like the autocomplete to work with strings that are out of order. Say, you have a function called "plant_carrots", if you start typing "carrots" autocomplete will not find the function name. This could just be personal preference to be fair. The main idea of the game is nice. And it mostly works. But there are some issues like this that come up a lot that I'd really like to see done better, have better warnings and more consistency. It also just feels much more like a chore than using a proper IDE. And i sadly cannot recommend this game for those who want to learn to code with this game. Because it's annoying enough dealing with these issues and figuring out what broke the code and how, while having some coding and bugfixing experience. This game needs some more polish and bugs fixed before i could recommend it to be used as a teaching tool. I do really hope this game will continue to be worked on, because a really good base is there and it's just falling a little bit short right now, and i'd love to see it with some of these issues fixed or improved.Show moreShow less
As a programmer, this game made me realize it's not coding I no longer like. I just did an 8 hour shift in this game after buying it. It's the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in the office that I hate.Show moreShow less
1st 2-3 tasks are easy to do. Ones you get into 4-5 tasks its almost impossible to solve without googling and reading a book or watching a video. No particular learning curve - just simple explanation about the new elements you farm. Community is mostly out of senior or at least middle level devs who are already know what they are doing. If you new to programming its going to be as hard as understand a rocket engine on the 1st look. Game has absent manual - there is litterly no manual on how to write code - it only tells you a piece of code then you need to do a 30 min research on how the code should at least look like in an example. Not recommended for beginners - realistically requires a minimum junior level development understanding and not simple syntax but actual automation in Python. Besides that Senior devs are loving it.Show moreShow less
