I'm really glad I stumbled upon this game randomly whilst browsing the store page because it was honestly really incredible. I can see why this game is so highly rated for sure. The story is simply fantastic. The setting of ancient China is not one you see very often for visual novel games and here it is pulled off extremely well. It does a good job expressing the struggles and hard choices that people went through during times of famine, and the game is not afraid to show off the darker sides of that time period. One of the best ways this game does this is through the characters. From the down-trotted, to the well-off, to the self-serving, and so on, this game does an amazing jobs at using characters to represent all the various different people and groups of that time period. Liang (the protagonist) in particular does an amazing job at showing the struggle many people have in hard times of the balance between looking out for yourself and doing the right thing. The characters are not just there to serve as symbolism though. This game does a really good job through it's excellent dialogue and scenes at making you care about the characters and makes some of the scenes honestly kind of emotional. The art is extremely well done, can be quite unique at times, and fits the setting of the game very well. However, I would be amiss in not also pointing out the soundtrack. The songs are honestly really good and also fit the setting of the game quite well. Aside from a few minor errors, the translation quality is also surprisingly good, and the few errors there are, are very minimal and still get across what they're trying to convey regardless. Overall, a unique and very well written visual novel, that I definitely won't forget anytime soon, 9/10.Show moreShow less
a lot of negative reviews brought up the same issues as me/have the same playtime as me, so i'm assuming we all quit after this part of the game: the scene in particular is where the character you play has to pick between joking about threatening to r/pe a 9-year old girl to her face, or to take off her skirt so you can hit her. up until this point, there was also a lot of talk about children defecating/peeing, and it was just an uncomfortable read. i ended up refunding the game right after. in hindsight, i should've read the warnings more thoroughly beforehand. i skimmed the main reviews (which were largely positive) and neglected to do any further digging into the game itself before jumping into it, but i personally can't recommend this game to anyone based off of what i've seen so farShow moreShow less
Grim and beautiful I've already read both previous works of Zerocreation Games studio and even made a fan Russian translation patch for one of them (Zanghua/Lay a Beauty to Rest, to be precise). Both of those works were very interesting and rather well crafted, but still there were some flaws here and there, such as some repetitive moments in Zanghua, or questionable game design choices in Er Fen Zhi Yi. However, this time, even if I can't say that this game is 100% perfect, it's a pretty solid step forward. The story is very well written, it's engaging, touching, intriguing and sometimes rather unpredictable. It has some very dark and uncanny, even outright nightmarish moments, but at the same time some very heartwarming ones. The characters are very lively and memorable, even some minor ones. The theme of prevailing hunger and how valuable and ought to be cherished food is can be sensed very deeply. The voice over is overall pretty good (hearing different Chinese dialects was very interesting), however, there are some minor flaws, like, for example, Cui'er and Man Sui's little brother sometimes didn't sound like little kids (especially the latter). Fortunately, it wasn't very frequent. The soundtrack, unfortunately, kinda lacks diversity, but still does pretty good job at setting up the mood. And the ending song is great. Regarding some controversial themes, I'd like to give my respect to the developers for not giving in to the censorship, not trying to smooth over the edges, etc. If it's 17th century, then it should be reproduced as such, and not through some kind of modern lens. I'd especially like to point this to some reviewers here. I'd also like to give a small advice to the devs for the future: you should make a small in-game encyclopedia, especially in a game like this. Because a lot of non-Chinese people don't even know what Ming dynasty is, much less would they be able to recognize there real historical figures like Li Zicheng or real historical events like Wanggongchang Explosion. So a set of small explanations for every such moment would be very appreciated. 加油!Show moreShow less
Saw the reviews and gave it a chance. Only played an Hour but, joking with an 11 year old girl about raping her... and the general vibes the game started to give me after this point put me off. Couldnt get into it after thatShow moreShow less
Somewhat spoilery for the first 'twist'. I really don't understand many of the criticisms in the negative reviews of this game. In regards to "pedo" claims about some content about the game, I just want people to actually think critically for once. Does the game at any point endorse the disgusting actions of the protagonist? No, it in fact actively goes out of it's way to show how he has become without morals at the start of the story, in how he describes humans and his victims as 'sheep'. Does the game fetishise/glorify the spank scenes, or the peeing scenes? No, the prose is very plain/dry, and there is zero visual imagery in regards to them. Does the game gratuitiously use these scenes? No, I think kids needing to pee and disrupting a trip is a pretty normal and universal human experience. Do I think, given the circumstances, that it's 100% reasonable that the protagonist and his co-conspirator as looters and murderers and human traffickers would keep watch over them as they went to pee in order to not allow them to escape? Yes. What's even funnier is the people who think the game is romanticising an adult and a child. I'm sorry, but if you thought this, I think that says more about you if anything, because the game literally has zero mention of the protagonist at any point being either sexually or romantically interested in the child. The rape threat, while gross, was something that he said to scare her because she nearly killed him (which is also entirely in character). The most amount of intimacy that we see is the protagonist being a father figure to her in the true ending. Onto the actual review. This visual novel was nothing short of a masterpiece. I have never seen something so raw in terms of portraying human desperation and brutality. The feelings that the game makes you feel is something so often detached from our everyday lives. We're thankful that we live in a society where we are free to enjoy entertainment like this without worries about famine, plagues, public chaos and disorder, sadistic officials, etc. I can only imagine what it must have actually been like during those times. I also like that the game never actually allows the protagonist to be absolved of his crimes. He accepts that doing virtuous actions will not clean his past, but that doing them in of itself is a moral good that he must so, unlike many other forms of media which blatantly try to have their crimes forgiven.Show moreShow less
I have 20 hours on file (a lot of it because of the bad habit of leaving a game to run while I walk away for a little while), and to be honest I'm ashamed of how far I let myself get through it. Because all the other elements were so good, I kept trying to look past the red flags and give the game the benefit of the doubt, hoping the narrative integrity would win out. But! I finally had to completely walk away because the game aggressively undermines its own serious themes to pander to a creepy niche. The game sells itself as a gritty, serious historical tragedy about human suffering, starvation, and child trafficking during the Ming Dynasty. The main character is explicitly written as a NINE year old girl yet the visual framing repeatedly sexualizes her for the PLAYER'S eye. This is different than trying to be historically accurate. This is plain predatory. They only get away with it because of the subtlety While there isn't blatant, explicit nudity, the intent is clear. Massive red flags like the voyeuristic bathtub scene and the forced "sexual tension" make it impossible to ignore. It completely shattered the immersion and made me feel just...gross. It is frustrating to watch a potentially amazing story get ruined because the developers lacked the artistic integrity to treat a child character with dignity. Do not let the "grimdark history" wrapper fool you. Avoid.Show moreShow less
I... I don't know how to convey this but... I must say this game is absolutely great. The story is cautivating, the sounds, music and specially the V.A. I don't regret buying this game, even though critics are saying that the English translation of this game is a little bit scuffed, for me personally, I felt they did a pretty good job translating although some parts at the end (endings and conclusions) may need some improvements and also some dialogues don't appear in the dialogue box but it's understandable just so the text makes sense, afterall, english and chinese are different in all ways, they don't even come from the same indo family tree (Coming from someone who speaks Chinese as mother tongue), nevertheless, the translation is PRETTY darn good. Now, getting deeper into the story part, it is a pretty good story, nothing more to say, although the endings weren't what I would've wanted, they've left a good taste in my mouth, and I'm not asking for more. I'm quite saddened at the fact that this visual novel is basically unknown outside China, the world must know and give it its proper recognition. And to basically sum everything up. This is ABSOLUTE PEAK. And that's basically it, if anyone's reading this and haven't bought or haven't played it yet, you guys should, this game won't disappoint you.Show moreShow less
I was super excited to see a game based on an ancient Chinese setting and the art was all so pretty. After seeing the positive reviews I decided to give it a shot, however it is one of my biggest regrets. Do not be fooled with the overwhelmingly positive reviews! The script and plot is not very appealing and there are a lot of unnecessary details/plot within the writing some of which being children voiding, the mc (who is an adult man) briefly describing the bodies of girls as a *glimpse*, and lots more. The final straw was the very evident hints of disgusting romanticizing between an adult man and a little girl. I tried to give the game a chance. There are small portions of backstory which I thought were quite sad, however that does not nearly redeem the lame story writing. I find it very hard to pity the mc and it's difficult to want to even see him redeem himself.Show moreShow less
The game actually made me cry from the sheer quality of its story. I've bought all of zerocreationgame's works and I want to make a shrine for them now too. Seeing all the misery caused from poverty, government corruption and natural disasters makes this game feel right at home even though the setting is centuries ago from the past. A shame these are all still prevalent in the current world but that's just life I suppose. Exploring all of these is the game's main selling point and it does so quite well showing that as it is inevitable for evil to spread even from good people in times of crisis. The game nicely shows that despite that, we should still try to be better people if we can and I love it. The humanity and warmth from all the people getting together even with all of their complicated positions against each other just pleases my heart so well. Even with all the darkness in the world that the characters reside in, I finished game much more hopeful than depressed because of the sheer writing quality of the story, the wills of the characters and their understandings to each other all moved my heart so well. I hope Zerocreationgame's the best for their future works and hope they make even better games than this and shine brighter than any of us could ever imagine.Show moreShow less
Got through where my character had to pin an 11 y.o child after an assassination attempt and I honestly wouldn't have blamed MC but then the dialogues between this child and MC (an ADULT) went to very questionable territory real quick. I've been getting the icky feeling there's gonna be an implied romance between these two and I don't feel like playing any longer to find out. If you feel the same way abt that kind of romance -again, a CHILD and an ADULT- then this game ain't for you and me. Bye.Show moreShow less
