I recommend this game for what it is - an atmospheric retro SF walking simulator. Starward Industries has done a decent enough job and has successfully conveyed a 60s SF story into an interactive experience. However, there are some things that are making the overall experience worse. Pros: - Absolutely superb music which perfectly conveys the feeling of being on a mysterious planet light years from Earth. The soundtrack is creepy and otherworldly majestic at the same time. - Great voice acting for the two main characters - Yasna and Novik. Both actors did a phenomenal job. Novik's actor, in particular, is amazing. He flawlessly captures the essence of a ship captain in an SF show from ~50 years ago. - Despite being on the same desolated planet the whole game, which is a design limitation for the visual department, the game still manages to show awesome and awe-inspiring alien scenery. Props to the studio for successfully managing to create diverse locations with such narrative limitations. I've never felt bored of my surroundings. In fact, it was the opposite. I was taking screenshots non-stop. - The story's tempo is just perfect. I've never felt like I'm losing my interest. Rather, I always wanted to push further and figure out what was going on. The game is around ~8-9 hours long, and I’ve never felt like it drags on unnecessarily. - The comic book story-telling gimmick is a nice touch. Cons: - By far, the worst thing in this game is infuriatingly outdated traversal mechanics. The game only allows you to climb or descend at very specific places, and it won't let you traverse anywhere else, despite being obvious that our character can do so. It's hard to describe just how annoying this is. It genuinely almost ruined the experience for me if it weren't for all the good things I listed above. These places where you can move forward act more like invisible interactive buttons that trigger the climbing/descent animation in that specific place rather than a traversal mechanic. I'm not talking here about going where I should not. I'm talking about reaching the designated place only from a specific spot, despite being reachable in other ways. - Movement, in general, is very clunky. There's no jumping, no crouching. Yasna will refuse to move/pass even above the slightest obstacles, such as small boulders or even big cables. Luckily, I only got stuck once into the terrain, but I was constantly in fear that could happen. - There is no strafe-running! If you run, the moment you use A/D, Yasna will stop running. And running is, btw, limited with an invisible stamina bar, which serves no purpose, and only adds to the annoyance. - If you are looking for a more complex gameplay, you will not find it here. There are no puzzles, no secrets to discover, and no actions that require mechanical skills or any thinking. These are just the most basic interactions. That's perfectly fine by me, so this is more of a warning for those who expect more gameplay here. - No manual saving. I simply don't understand why a game such as this doesn't allow you to save manually. Luckily, auto-saves were frequent enough. However, there's absolutely no reason for this game not to have a manual save. It forces you to play until the next autosave, even if you want to quit that gaming session or need to go.Show moreShow less

There's a lot to like about The Invincible: it's beautiful to look at, the science fiction of necroevolution is fascinating, and the voice acting is stellar. It's a compelling story and even though it's largely a walking simulator it's consistently engaging. It misses the mark in two fundamental areas that make it impossible to recommend, though: movement is excruciatingly unpleasant both walking and driving the rover, and the team clearly ran out of budget before they were able to complete the game so no matter which of the several endings you get it just... stops without any kind of actual ending. Abrupt enough that I thought it was some kind of bug, but... nope. Just stops. So, a walking simulator where walking (or driving) is painfully bad paired with a game that ran out of money 2/3rds of the way through the project so they cut the entire 3rd act = can't recommend. It's a real shame because the ingredients of an amazing experience are all here.Show moreShow less

I did not enjoy The Invincible. The design work is excellent, many of the visuals are gorgeous, and the voice acting is highest quality. But I felt all other elements of the game fell flat. What I expected was a narrative game with light puzzle elements, but The Invincible is not that. There are no puzzle elements. The game is essentially a visual novel, or at best a long series of audio logs stitched together. While the character is investigating, you are asked to go through very slow, extremely explicit prompts for each new action. The movement in the game is slow as well, which makes the pace feel even more glacial. Slowly walk to a location, click on a thing. Now slowly walk to the next location and click on things there. The world feels hemmed in. While it is beautifully rendered, there are fences everywhere, including some very jarring invisible walls blocking off clearly open passageways. It makes an already limited experience feel even moreso. And the narrative elements of The Invincible fail as well. The game is advertised as having 11 separate endings: that's technically true, but of course they're largely small variations on two basic endings. The choices that have an impact on those endings are limited themselves. And what endings there are felt incomplete, unfinished. I think it was a creative choice attempting to end the game on an ambiguous or melancholy note, but I found it unsatisfying. Overall: The Invincible is extremely pretty, but I found it to be a very frustrating, unsatisfying gameplay and storytelling experience.Show moreShow less

Casual playthrough ~5 hours No spoilers in this review! @MatureContent I can't believe it took me this long to finally play this game, because what an immersive experience it was. This is a walking sim that feels much like a game like Firewatch, but in this story we are in space on a deserted alien planet. We play as Yasna, a biologist who got lost on the surface, in the middle of nowhere and have suffered memory loss. Your goal is to regroup with your missing crew and return home safely. The protagonist Yasna reminded me so much of Aava from Cairn that if it wasn't because I had already seen that the voice actors weren't the same, I would have been convinced they were. They talk the same way, have similar personalities and this game has quite a few climbing segments that just helped reinforced this even more. This is a sci-fi story in a retro theme, fitting really well with the style from the golden age of sci-fi, around the 1950s-60s. This story is based on a novel from around the same time and while I haven't read the novel, I can only imagine that they did a good representation of the original story, because I really like this game. Beside the good story, it is also a really beautiful game. You can see that the environmental artists had a lot of fun with it, as they clearly shaped a work of art out of it. I cannot praise this game enough, as it felt like it was tailored for me. It is the exact type of sci-fi that really gets me hard and the environment design and whole atmosphere of the game, which is really important to me, was just perfect. After finishing this game, I actually felt that feeling of emptiness that you can also get after finishing a good book, movie or show, all I wanted to do was replay it, and I probably would have if it wasn't already really late. It took me five hours to complete and I did it all in one sitting without skipping anything. I highly recommend this game, but I would still wait for a sale, as it often ends up going down in price 50-60% off, so you might as well save if you can. ————————————————————————————— Help me out by following my Curator, I’d really appreciate it!!Show moreShow less

I think the most striking thing about this game, as I drop this review many months after finishing the game, is how much I've purged it out of my memory banks. Not because the journey itself didn't have anything memorable - it certainly did - but because of how badly it sticks the landing with the ending. Hard sci-fi lovers will probably enjoy the story’s imaginative depiction of what alternate evolution in outer space could look like. This was something I enjoyed personally, and the game does raise questions about mankind’s place in the universe, as well as the limitations of both humans and machines. Intellectually stimulating as that is, I found the game emotionally vapid. I understand it's a very subjective thing to say, but if you're telling a story commenting on the difference between man and machine, I do think the lack of any emotion is a detriment to that type of story. The reason for that lack of emotion is that there are few characters to speak of, and far fewer who you meet in person. You spend most of the game talking to a man on a radio. I won't speculate on whether it was deliberate or due to budgetary restraints, but the point is that I felt a severe absence of human connection in this game that felt more grating the further in I got. The counterpoint to this is that the lack of humans can really work wonders for creating an air of isolationism. And yet, there are several points in the story where the story signposts that we *will* meet other people -- whether friend or foe -- except it never happens outside of one character. This could have been mitigated with an interesting protagonist, but there’s not enough to work with here. As competent as the acting is, the protagonist is effectively an exposition machine, and a vessel for scientific debate. I don't really understand what drives her. The biggest issue is that the plot doesn’t really go anywhere. There’s a great mystery. But when you complete the story, it feels like you’ve experienced a fragment in a larger story, which makes sense, given that the game ties into a novel. Far be it from me to complain about a video game pushing players onto the medium of books, but a game story still has to stand on its own two legs. This doesn’t. Its end arrives abruptly with little fanfare. The choice and consequence element is underwhelming. Yes, there are like a dozen endings which I YouTubed but all of them just feel unsatisfying and unresolved. I want to be clear that I really like walking simulators: Firewatch is one of my favourite games. But even on a gameplay level, other games in this genre never felt *this* slow to me. It might have something to do with that The Invincible has big, empty, open spaces that can take quite a bit of time to traverse, and it's made worse by how slowly you move. If you goof up like I did by taking a wrong turn, you're now looking at an even longer journey. From a quality of life perspective, I think this was avoidable. I really wanted to say more positive things about the game. I love the visuals, the retro vibes, the art style, the performances, and the sense of mystery. I’ve been desperate for good sci-fi, and part of why this game came into my mind today — enough so that I felt like dropping a review — is because the visual aesthetic has stuck with me. But between an uneventful story and some very slow walking, I can’t think of a great reason to recommend it unless you're planning on reading the books. EDIT: My play time reads very high on Steam because I left the game idling in the background on several occasion for many hours. Without idle time, this game takes a few hours to complete.Show moreShow less

I can't help but feel a bit disappointed after playing this game. Sure, the graphics are nice and the story is kind of intriguing, but there's just hardly any depth to the whole thing. Given the time to complete and the content I'd probably have been okay with spending $5-$10 on it, but having purchased this for $40, I'm not too happy with it. There was potential here, I just don't think it was properly explored. There was also a lot of walking and driving to your next destination, a lot of which is simply holding forward while Yasna climbs a ledge or squeezes through a tight gap, or just straight up running. In my opinion, this would have been better adapted into a movie than a game.Show moreShow less

The game is gorgeous but is very linear and doesn't give you any freedom in anything. Walking up to a cliff - only in this exact position, going back - sorry, you have to move forward, going further this path - sorry, you have to further explore the location you're in. Diary is useless, it doesn't give you any valuable information, but you forced to use it to complete the dialogues. Both detectors are useless too, you don't need them at all, since the environment is so linear, you just can't pass the point of interest. Additionally, there are too many scripted situations and cut-scenes. There's no danger you have to avoid, no challenges you have to face. There's no game mechanics that you have to use to complete the game, all 'toggle this' or 'use that' are just scripted animation sequences, you cannot mess up, there's no consequences for any of your decisions. I was expecting something similar to Long Dark but on an alien planet. Even Firewatch was much more fun, you could go anywhere and always find something interesting, the game allowed you to play it on your own way. I understand there is a certain type of people who would enjoy the game, but it's just not for the rest of us, if you don't mind me being a little arrogant. PS: for all the people who accuse me of not reading the game description, I will read it for you here because apparently you guys can't read. This is a "story-driven adventure", where you "discover" a planet, "use atompunk tools", "face unforeseen threats" and also "make choices". Thanks for attention.Show moreShow less
