Our Verdict
A Ten-Year Marathon: The Founder of a Lane
The Isle's place in the history of dinosaur survival games is genuinely singular. It is not a universal phenomenon in the way of a building-block megahit, nor is it a "dinosaurs plus survival" everything-bagel like ARK Survival. It is a hardcore, simulation-grade sandbox laser-focused on "playing as a dinosaur and staying alive," and in doing so it founded an entirely new sub-genre: multiplayer dinosaur survival. When Afterthought founder Dondi proposed this concept in 2015, there was no precedent to follow. Ten years on, the lane he opened now holds Path of Titans, Beasts of Bermuda, Saurian and other peers — but all of them were inspired by The Isle. That "founder of the lane" standing is the single most valuable asset of the ten-year marathon.
The 98,000-odd reviews holding a 77% positive rating on Steam are, for a game carrying ten years of Early Access plus the Dondi controversy plus the Legacy split, remarkably steady data. By comparison, Path of Titans formally launched back in 2022 and Beasts of Bermuda in 2018, while The Isle is still in Early Access after ten years. Yet that 77% says the product's core experience is strong enough that, even with disputes over development pace and questions of trust in the studio, players keep playing and keep leaving positive marks. This "love it and resent it at once" posture is the steady state of the community. The Dondi controversy is an unavoidable reality of any overall verdict — the sweeping 2020 accusations around team member misconduct, financial management, and communication style cost the studio a portion of player trust and visibly slowed progress without ending it. For a prospective buyer, grasping that backdrop matters more than the number itself, because you are buying not only a game but, to a degree, an investment in a contested studio's continued work.
Target Player and the Inverse Portrait
The target portrait is clear: the hardcore player who wants simulation-grade dinosaur survival plus high-risk PVP tension. If you have previously played a permadeath multiplayer game, or care about documentary-grade dinosaur models, or are willing to sink 100-plus hours into learning one game, The Isle is close to a must-buy. The inverse portrait is just as clear. Players with zero tolerance for permadeath will be driven off within the first ten hours of consecutive deaths; traditionalists who want quest-driven story and clear win conditions will lose their bearings fast in Spiro Island's aimless environment; and players who hold a strong moral position on the Dondi controversy may choose not to support the game at all. One more group deserves a separate warning: complete newcomers to dinosaur survival are better off playing Path of Titans first to learn the basic loop, then switching to The Isle for the hardcore simulation version.
The 2026 purchase path is simple — the default Steam edition at 19.99 dollars, no paid DLC, all content pushed free, the best value-per-hour in the lane. The recommended onboarding: switch to the Evrima branch through Steam beta, start practicing on a small dinosaur like the hypsilophodon rather than charging straight at a tyrant-class predator, and live a few lives on a newcomer-friendly server before migrating to high-skill PVP. The replaceability verdict returns to the angle's core: permadeath plus a single character slot plus 27 finely crafted dinosaur models plus UE4 rainforest immersion are four things nobody has truly replicated in ten years. Path of Titans chose the opposite road and traded tension for friendliness; Beasts of Bermuda has serious balance problems; Saurian's content is too thin; ARK is a dinosaur-survival hybrid rather than true dinosaur survival. For the hardcore dinosaur player, The Isle remains, as of 2026, the only mature simulation-grade dinosaur survival sandbox — and even with the Dondi controversy and the reality of ten years in Early Access, its core experience still has no real substitute.

The game was fun at first, then you start to see people getting banned for made up reasons. You tell yourself ahh they must have a reason right. They probably saw something you didnt. Then you continue playing the game. You have another dino come up to you and you dont kill it you get banned for mixed packing. I have around 468 hours sank into this game, i have read the official rules multiple times, i follow the rules. The admin makes up additional things on top of what is written. When you confront them about it they just smile and say go talk to this other guy who wont respond to you. Just a bunch of power hungry abusive admin that dont do their due diligence and ban people who dont deserve bans. Update: Evirma is terrible, there are almost no fish to be found in any body of water, i saw 1 frog in an hour no fish friend saw a fish in the air. Its hard to stay alive as anything when you cant eat. Couldnt even drink water.Show moreShow less

the admins in the official discord are actually children. or at least they act like it, as soon as you say something about the game they point finger to each other and don't want to do what they have signed up to do which is solve various problems within the game. ran into a dev in game and killed him. was then banned from the official discord and blocked from all the dev team. actual ♥♥♥♥♥'s deving the game and you're right it is now a dead game after this most recent update. they refuse any criticism about their "work" there are more fatal errors than the first legacy play test they refuse to fix bugs THAT ARE FIXABLE like holes in the ground, spots to get stuck on, or even eating is a problem as food can get stuck in your mouth and you have to relog in order to reset the food. and good luck in que, they took away 2 servers in NA and made it one big server with no AI. there are 4 players in that lobby currently as im typing this. FUCCIN USELESS. now on the normal servers there is a 40 to 60 minute que every time you log on. dead game save the 20.Show moreShow less

TL:DR: I have a lot of hours, because this game was the only halfway decent dinosaur game for awhile, and I was playing on a very specific server that made the gameplay fun with the help of very good staff, and I still play this game sometimes because of nostalgia. Game not very good. Developers not very good (big favoritism, slow development, incompetence). Not a very fun time. Don't. There's better out there I do not recommend this game because there are better options (now) (look into Path of Titans or even Beasts of Bermuda). This review is in-depth and long because whoa I have more than 1k hours on this game. Because I grew up with this game and I really loved it 7 years ago. My opinion has progressively been souring over said years so here we are now! I do not like this game and the following is my proper justification GAMEPLAY: (What I disliked:) Objectively, Isle is a half-baked "spend 5 hours growing any dinosaur and then die and start over" simulator (especially in the recode "Evrima" which is just a "play as a crocodile and/or die to a crocodile" simulator). Say you wanna grow a T-Rex: you need 6 hours, and you will die many many times several hours in. Really, a more fair estimate would be at least double that, unless you're some pro gamer or have a group to help you for all of that duration COMBAT: The game is insanely unbalanced. (This part mostly refers to Legacy, but I have no doubt Evrima will have these same issues as its roster grows, because it literally already does) You play as a T-Rex: you can kill MOST of the roster with one bite, a lot of whom cannot outrun a T-Rex effectively. I believe games like this should follow the logic of "attack what you can't outrun, outrun what you can't attack". In Isle? Some dinosaurs are just WORTHLESS. Ankylosaurus cannot outrun almost any dinosaur, so it should get more defense, right? No, a T-Rex will kill it in a few bites and the Ankylosaur can barely harm it. What is stopping the devs from giving the Ankylosaurus more defense and a leg breaking ability (like it literally USED to) so that it gets a good chance at outrunning something it can't fight? (What if Anky was weaker against small dinosaurs, therefore making it more fair, and stronger against larger dinosaurs because a bone break is more likely for dinosaurs that weigh a lot, therefore again, making it more fair) I'm gonna get too angry if I try and explain the nuances of this game's """combat""", it is garbage. Some dinosaurs are really good, some dinosaurs are worthless (AKA most of the herbivores). You want to play a big buff herbivore, the triceratops? That can stand up to a big predator? Nope. The T-Rex has an 80% chance to break your leg in one bite in addition to its insane base bite damage and insane ambush running speed, which basically means you're already dead. And most carnivores in the game have insane advantages over any single herbivore. Thanks Dondi! And if you're someone who thinks that this is the only way it can be done, then go play Path of Titans instead. Every creature fills a good niche and almost nothing dies to anything in a few bites. Everything has a good chance to survive most encounters and herbivores, god bless, are PLAYABLE and VIABLE. (I don't mean to shill for this other game, it just angers me that Isle is still stuck in its old frustrating ways after 7 years when another game just sprouted up in a few and provided an immensely more fun experience. PoT just showed how exactly a game like this can be fun. Isle might have done it first to such a large scale, but it has done close to NOTHING to innovate towards anything FUN) "HORROR": Each 30 minutes is night, which means total pitch black. People will defend this because "it's horror" but horror should not equate to frustration. Horror should add something to your game, not take away from it. I NEED to reinforce this: it sucks! 30 minutes in pitch black every hour sucks! It makes you insanely vulnerable and you can't see almost anything. My playing experience boiled down to "attempt to enjoy the game for 30 minutes, then log out or sit perfectly still in a bush AFK for the other 30 minutes". The game CAN be thrilling, sometimes you make a cool escape and the sound design is great, but 90% of the time it's frustration ENVIRONMENT: the maps aren't good. They take forever to traverse with not many notable or fun destinations, and they aren't particularly realistic either. Most times you will find nothing and no one (What I liked:) Models, animations, sound design... AKA visuals and sound are nice. The price is good too, but I would still be complaining even if I got a dozen copies for free Evrima (the recode) is also more fun because there's more to do, more attack and defense options. There's diets that require work to achieve, mechanics like nesting are more nuanced, etc. It's actually innovating, finally, after 6 years, it's doing something different (though not nearly enough or in the right areas. Evrima is still infruriating and unbalanced. You either choose to play as a Crocodile and not have fun, or you play as something else and still not have fun) THE DEVELOPERS: I also do not recommend this game because I vehemently dislike the main developer and don't feel comfortable supporting him. Not only is he an awful person (research Dondi for yourself. There is a video out there of him flexing his wealth on his daughter if you look, as an example) but also subjects the game itself to very obvious favoritism, resulting in total imbalance and frustration, as I explained previously. The devs attempt to excuse their bad decisions, mostly with "it's supposed to be realistic". Anyone who knows a thing about dinosaurs can tell from 50 miles away that this game has never aimed for realism to begin with. When asked about the unviability of the Ankylosaurus, an animator replied "Anky bad animal". Kind of a joke, but a good representation of how the dev team feels. But they'd rather keep it and punish you for playing a dinosaur you like Alright, option B: "begone, hater." The devs do not tolerate negative or even just constructive feedback and will disregard or shut you up. There are plenty of recountings out there from people who have gotten banned from their Discord server etc for not doing anything wrong (and with proper evidence, you don't have to take my word for it). The devs have also been shown to be incompetent. The development time for Legacy Isle was consistently bad despite all the support they got because they refused to get devs outside of their friend and family groups, which in itself was probably the reason behind poor choices. Everyone has some favoritism by virtue of knowing each other as more than just teammates. The moderation is awful. False promises have been made too many times to count, only to result in nothing. The whole reason that Isle is being recoded into Evrima is because some singular developer (as Dondi claimed) turned the code to mush, and apparently there was just no coming back from that. This isn't the first time some singular individual has been faulted for something wrong with the game, so we should ask ourselves how competent these people actually are to develop a game and if they're even telling the truth, since they always seem to have some convenient scapegoat to push all their blame onto. There is a LOT more such as blame being pushed into actual named and innocent individuals within the team too, but that's alleged as far as I know, and I'd be here all day if I were to list everything that HAS been backed up by evidence All this dev stuff might not matter to you as much as it does to me, but hey. It would be nice if more people were aware, I think. I cannot stand supporting not only incompetent devs but awful people in general. There are thousands of other devs out there that could use your time and support for much more than this, including other dinosaur simulator gamesShow moreShow less
READ REVIEW This game can be a lot of fun, yes. But there are some things you should know, both good and bad, before purchase. THE BAD; -When you download this game, the version you have is NOT the version you should be playing. You need to go into the games properties, click on Game Versions & Beta, and download Evrima. That is the version everyone plays on, and you will NOT get the true Isle experience if you do not download it. -This game lags and has bugs and frequently crashes. There is no tutorial and there is no map (unless you go online to islemaps- which is a must), and there is no key for any of the symbols. You need to look up everything to understand what it is you are smelling as your dino, and where you are on the island. -As of writing this, there has been a "bug" for the last two months that deletes your dino even on a safe save. Once you log out, your dino is GONE. I say bug in quotations because it's been happening so long that I do not think it is accidental, but intentional. I don't know if this is a way to try and keep the full grown Rex population down, or if it's a temporary measure, but it is very frustrating. My suggestion (at this time), is that until this is fixed, and unless you are fine with losing hours of progress, not to play the Rex. He takes SO LONG to grow- which is understandable- but spending upwards of 5 hours to grow him just to lose him on a log out is incredibly annoying. -Do NOT go into this game thinking you will automatically get to a full grown anything. There are some very kind players, but the game is about survival. You ARE going to get eaten. As a baby, as a juvi, as an adult, it doesn't matter. Some runs are good, some runs are bad, and some runs are ruined by large packs. It happens, don't get too attached to your dino. -People cheat in every game, and The Isle is no exception. I've had a baby bepi almost murder my full grown Cera with one tiny little peck, and I've seen Rex's with speed boosts and infinite stamina. Just... be aware. THE GOOD; -The game, when it isn't lagging to all hell, is beautiful. Turn that ridiculous music they have all the way down and enjoy the quiet moments. -Having friends to play with in this game makes it 100 times more fun. Your survival rate will go up, too. -Private servers, if you can find one you like, are a much better experience. It will be no less brutal, but there will often be keys and rules that balance the game. -Being a Dinosaur is, believe it or not, a lot of fun. The way your dino moves, the calls and sounds they make, the way they hunt, it can all be very immersive and make for a really entertaining time. -Not all, maybe not even most, but SOME of the players will be very kind. I've had big Rex's hunt for me, I've had herbies adopt me when I'm a carnivore, I've had mix packs come to my rescue. I've had deinos (gators) that think I'm cute and protect me even though I'm a tiny little Troodon, and I've even had an Carno who tested the water before I swam across by hurling themselves in first. Kindness CAN get you killed in this game, but sometimes... it's awfully sweet. This game is a lot of fun, no matter how annoying and frustrating it can be at times. Hopefully, and I say this with doubt, they spend some time fixing the bugs and making it better. EDIT 7/3/26; Not a fan of this update, and no idea if the bug that deletes your dino is even fixed. The new skin selector is actually one of the worst changes I've seen to a game in a while, and (I know it's hard to believe) the game still lags and crashes- maybe even more so now since there was a graphics "boost". Gonna give it a few days but might call it and retire this game if the experience doesn't get better. EDIT 7/10/26; Ok it's been a few days and it's not as hot anymore so I was able to play without being automatically annoyed by the heat. The new skin selector makes me sad, I miss my colorful Cera's. I REALLY liked being able to customize my dino, and now we all just pick from the same few shades. Booooo. Swamp is a LOT different and a much less viable option to grow a baby Rex- just a heads up. Otherwise the map looks okay. There are some rendering issues (a lot of the rocks look smooth and untextured). Redwood is a great addition though. Game still has lag, still crashes, still has random bugs. I can't say if the save bug has been fully fixed. I was growing a deinosuchus and he was gone when I went back to him (which isn't great since they take an enormous amount of time to grow), but the last two Cera's I've grown on official maps HAVE saved. I'm going to try and save a Rex and see if I get him back, will update. Unfortunately for me I still love the game so I will continue to play, but I cannot overstate how much I miss my blue crested and gold crested Cera's. Edit 7/13/26; Safe save seems to be fixed. There is a bug on the save for deinosuchus where it sometimes won't load, and then shows as "deleted". HOWEVER, the deino I thought I lost randomly loaded even though he wasn't even listed as saved anymore. I think you just have to back out and go back in a few times to get to that particular dinosaur.Show moreShow less
Well i've decided to write this after alot of thought. I did enjoy the game when i started it, its still in early access and bugs are to be expected, mostly we've laughed over them, its alot of pvp at the moment.. but thats where the issues start to arise sadly. Not so much with the game but the devs and forum mods. Which is what brings me to review this so poorly. All of the expeiences are myself and friends. On reporting any bugs players get told "its early access and to be expected" to which confuses me.. aren't we supposed to report these so they can get fixed? The posts from the players posting the bug and giving screens will often get locked and deleted. Other bugs include crashing, freezing, players asking for the lag to be addressed, and hopefully worked on, to which all are replyed to "Get a better computer" and " Connection bugs on ISPs not paying fees" On asking any questions to the devs or mods, threads are locked and deleted if they are questions related to where the game is headed, anything on breeding or any discussion on thoughts to different dinos abilities and looks. The latest stream with the owner, Dondi, a post was released in the forums by a dev [deathlyrage] stating to "Ask about the new breeding system" So many of us went into the stream to ask.. to which nothing was anwered, no talk of it and everything relating to it was ignored. After which this post was deleted and denied [Thou a few people like myself kept copies] My biggest issue however is the forums, players will always talk and wish and express what they want to, its freedom of speech. But when the mods go in and lock threads, shut down posts, tell people "Thats never going to happen" when they are only mod, ban others because they don't like what they post or just have issue with the players themselves in the game. That is immature and frankly turns me away from this game. anyone even breathing a word of it is publicly ostracized by both the community AND devs. A parting note, some comments from the people that do the locking and deleting http://puu.sh/n3396/7da633450b.png http://puu.sh/n33ak/623b64ef64.png and my favorite, a list of people that they have banned for... what? and why are they sharing this info? http://puu.sh/n337M/82f200acd2.png this is from the people that are supposed to be unbias and decided what we can and cannot say? This game.. the people creating it and running, just save yourself the headache and anger and fustrations and avoid it. http://puu.sh/ng8fz/c42e7ad55a.png Update So after some time I returned to see the postive reviews which excited me to think they had addressed some of the issues that had been a huge problem in the past.. They had not, it was the same old nonsense with now.. Mods! yes.. they allowed mods into the game to which a whole new group now harass and bully modders for creating. As the devs put it "Don't make it look bad and people wont hate it" Wow.. just.. After reading all the good reviews it seems that all the very short "Its so great, dinosaurs! I love how they look" makes me wondering if they got the game free as the detail is pretty slim to none all to gt the postitve ratings up. Beware this game, unless you enjoy walking a tightrope of careful wording the moment you get into the game or forums, heaven help you should you try and ask for help.. Food for thought, an interesting listen from youtube on one of the isles devs. https://youtu.be/utjWcMAWlJYShow moreShow less
Please follow United Critics for quality reviews The Isle Review – Be a Dinosaur The Isle is a highly realistic Horror-Survival, Gritty, and Open-world video game brought to you by Afterthought LLC. You start playing the game with only one ultimate goal in mind – Survival. The beautiful island and its ancient inhabitants await you and will radically change as you begin learning how to survive in the harsh environment. The game doesn’t feature any waypoint, video tutorials, or precepts to modify the play style or purpose. After having no proper guidance, there will be only one person you can trust is yourself. The most exciting section of the game is that it comes with different types of dinosaurs and for sure, it’s pretty cool to simulate a dinosaur in the highly intensive world. Navigate Massive Landscapes of Rich Forest and Open Plains The open-world environment is specially designed to kill you. Exploration of detailed landscapes of precious forest and open plains would be a fun-filled activity while traversing treacherous hills and maneuver through swamps where horrors are lurking everywhere. You have no option, except to kill or be killed. The game introduces fair mechanics that will punish you upon conducting any mistake. So get ready for thrilling gameplay where you every move count and will determine the outcome. Introduction of Massive Multiplayer Online Mode Dozens of unique playable creatures are there, and upon joining, the game will let you play as one of them to start your journey toward breathtaking landscapes. During the gameplay, you will find different types of beasts, from small herbivores to giants like T. Rex. Over the course, you can use your natural senses and abilities to face off opposing monsters. Unless you grow, you should keep the distance from other massive beasts which are on the hunt for small creatures to have their dinner. Engage with a newly Introduced Prehistoric Ecosystem Start your journey as a small beast within the game and join an epic adventure where you can engage yourself with a living prehistoric ecosystem as you try to become either prey or predator on chosen server, introducing more than 100 players in MMO mode. All of the players are dangerous and hungry as you, and won’t show any mercy on you. After evolving, the game allows you to form a pack, develop your nests, protect your offspring, and go on the hunt to feed, during claim territories. You should know that having a single mistake can spell your demise. Two Playable Game Modes • Survival The primary mode is Survival, offering you a tense and challenging experience where you must grow faster or may die young. Similar to real-life, dinosaurs in the Survival mode would progress through different life stages, from small to vulnerable. You, as a dinosaur, possess night vision and scent abilities, as well as you can use your wits to survive longer until you get fully grown. • Sandbox The game promises to let you play as humans in the Sandbox mode soon. However, it allows you to play an expanded roaster of beasts. In the game, you can directly approach to the adult predator or a massive giant with no consequences or penalties from dying. In short, the game won’t judge you how you survive and play in Sandbox Mode. The Verdict The Isle is one of a few games that let you be a dinosaur and start fighting for the Survival of your life. Going through a complete life cycle of dinosaur would be an exciting part of the game, and for sure, many players find it interested as they enjoy to what dinosaurs would do in a critical situation to make their Survival. The introduction of two playable factions and dynamic drop-in spawn system is just perfect as they give you realistic gameplay to experience. Rating: 9/10Show moreShow less
If you came here from SovietWomble's video, let me just tell you right away that this game is not very good. The game is riddled with poor controls, terrible hit detection, latency issues, balance problems, clipping, and more. The biggest issue here is that the devs have somehow decided to focus their attention on "EVRIMA" which is the "new" work and completely abandoned "Legacy," which is the standard mode the game comes installed as. EVRIMA is essentially Early Access AGAIN, where the devs have started over for some reason and scrapped most of Legacy to just rebuild the game, resulting in even fewer features and a longer wait time before this game is functional. EVRIMA is an even less polished, less robust version of the Legacy servers. EVRIMA has fewer dinosaurs than even the "Survival" branch of Legacy - no T-Rex, no Spino, basically nothing above "medium sized" herbivores, and almost none of the dinosaurs' special features exist. Even if you play on Legacy, some dinosaurs don't even function in Survival servers, many of them are relegated to "Sandbox" which is essentially just deathmatch all day every day. The terrain is janky, the map is empty, the spawns are screwed up, and god help you if you clip a rock and suddenly your dinosaur's leg is broken, taking actual minutes of your life to sit there and wait while it heals. The "RP" servers mentioned in the video are strict, but these rules and regulations are typically necessary because the standard encounter with players is "Kill On Sight," regardless of who you are or what you're doing. The community varies wildly from "murder herbivore" to "crazy cat lady collecting all the baby dinos" with servers being run like high school drama classes. The game has basically zero balance whatsoever, and what modest PVE there is, the AI is rudimentary and untested. NPC velociraptors will run up behind you and stay behind you constantly biting you without you being able to turn around. NPC herbivores will bolt away from you faster than a fully-grown Utahraptor and take multiple bites to kill, never slowing down once. AI can see you perfectly through terrain or concealment and from miles away at night. It is an absolute chore to play this game and the only upside is "This is technically the most finished dinosaur survival game on Steam." Ultimately, if the devs actually finish "EVRIMA" instead of abandoning it and starting over yet again, it might be worth something in four or five years. The road map has interesting features and lots of promises, but as with all Early Access titles on Steam, these seem like pipe dreams to get you to stick with a floundering project as it slowly sinks into irrelevant obscurity and one day dying without ever hitting that coveted 1.0. As it stands, this is a novelty at best.Show moreShow less
