03Frequently asked questions
Does the game feature zombies?
No. The dangers come from the natural world and the harsh cold.
Can Survival Mode be played cooperatively?
No. Survival Mode is a solo experience.
Does dying erase a save?
Death deletes the save in Survival Mode; WINTERMUTE does not use permadeath.
“A single-player atmospheric survival benchmark where cold, hunger and fatigue are the only enemy — sublime sandbox, flat story mode”
Our Verdict
Pull all six dimensions together and the shape of The Long Dark comes clear. It is not a game that wants to please everyone. It is a game that wants to do one thing to the edge of what is possible.
A piece of subtraction, swimming upstream
To understand its weight you have to go back to the year it set out from. In 2014 early access and a 2017 full release, the survival genre was all but occupied by zombies and the walking dead — putting a horde behind the player was the laziest way to manufacture tension. Hinterland did subtraction instead. No zombies, no supernatural enemy of any kind, only the cold, the hunger, the thirst, the fatigue, and one merciless stretch of Canadian wilderness.
At the time, that subtraction was a gamble against the current. In hindsight it was the most far-sighted move it made. The game all but single-handedly founded the atmospheric-survival subgenre, turning the framework from "human versus monster" to the introspective "human versus nature, human versus solitude."
It proved that a purely single-player, purely PvE, purely natural survival game could become an evergreen hit, not a curiosity. The poetic, mood-driven survival titles that came after all carry, to some degree, the trail it broke — and in a market that rewards spectacle and noise, that quiet influence is the more remarkable achievement.

Who should buy in, and who should walk past
So who is this wilderness for? If you are the kind of single-player survivalist who savours a slow tempo, chases deep immersion, and will gladly count every resource to outlast each freezing night, this game is all but tailored to you. What it offers is not instant gratification but a tightrope focus, and the bone-deep satisfaction of having weathered a storm. The people who love it tend to love it for hundreds of hours.
But if what you want is fast combat, player-versus-player conflict, or someone clearly telling you where to go and what to do next, it will most likely disappoint you, maybe even turn you away outright. Its pace is glacial, its penalties heavy, its hand-holding close to zero. Those traits read as soul to the people who love it and as a wall to the people who don't. GameSpot's 6 back in the day came largely from that "not for me," and there is nothing the game could patch to change it. There is no right or wrong in it; it simply never set out to please everyone, and it has been entirely honest about that from the first hour.
Recommended setup and the final call
If you do decide to step in, my advice is this: start with the base game, then add the Tales from the Far Territory expansion as you see fit — those four new regions and their mechanics keep the wilderness fresh. Don't buy the whole bundle up front, though; confirm with the base game that you can stomach the pace before committing to the rest. As for the way in, newcomers can start with the story mode, drill the basics over fifteen hours, and only then move into the survival sandbox for what the game truly is. Opening straight into a high-difficulty sandbox is, for a beginner, close to dying on repeat.
Back to the question we opened with — what is hardest about it to copy? The answer lives in the contrast with DayZ. That lineage builds tension out of conflict and plunder between players, while The Long Dark loads every ounce of its tension onto a lonely standoff between a person and nature. That purity is something the loud multiplayer survivors cannot give you. Five million copies sold, roughly ten million players reached, multiple 2018 Webby honours, and the sequel Blackfrost: The Long Dark 2 announced at the end of 2024 — together they confirm one thing. This solitary peak in the frozen wild still, to this day, has no one who can truly take its place.

Sometimes I don't even outlive 15 minutes, one time I made it over 100 days. I always die, always. Sometimes it's my fault (I shouldn't have shot that bear), sometimes it isn't (why did that storm have to roll in at that exact moment?). Most games do their best to make you feel big and strong and powerful, but this game puts you in your place and for that, I love it. The watercolor sky at sundown, the hypnotic stillness of a snow flurry and the horrible shriek of a storm, The Long Dark is beautiful. It's one of my favorite games ever, and they haven't even made it yet.Show moreShow less
I bought this game when it came out a few months ago and after reading through some of the reviews people have posted I wanted to mention a few things that no one seems to talk about (maybe someone did, I didn't read all the reviews). First off I know this is an early access game and is subject to improvement, that being said it has been over a month since anything has been added/changed to the game. The last major "improvement" to the game was the addition of a new zone. My problem with this game is that it is extremely limited in it's current state and it seems like the devs have drastically slowed down in their progress. In it's current state this game is worth about 5-10 hours of gameplay to most people. The problem is that after you find good clothing and a gun there truly is nothing left that this game offers. It turns into an endless cycle of forage wood -> melt snow for water -> kill a deer/wolf for food -> sleep. Sadly the only other thing there is to do is "explore" and loot, however the cabins and other buildings around both maps are quite generic. In the new map I exit out of the game after 30 minutes of running around and searching 30 drawers per house, because that's all there is to do. I'm not saying this isn't a nice game, it has a lot of potential and for the first few hours it is quite fun but I wouldn't buy it if you're expecting to get a lot of hours of gameplay. You'd be better off going for one of the thousand generic zombie survival crafting games because although they all basically do the same ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing and 95% of them aren't finished games, there is still 10x more to do in them than in The Long Dark. If the devs didn't quit on this game yet it can turn into something great, for now I would not recommend. Let the down votes begin, someone had to say it. ***EDIT*** Feb.10/2015 As per request I am gonna do a short update on this review. There was a large new region added a few days ago. This region doubled the sandbox size. Apart from the new region I've noticed you can now craft a few pieces of clothing that you can't get as loot, and some sort of medicine you can make using plants that you find. Apart from this the only new thing I've noticed is the addition of bears. Everything else is exactly the same, you forage wood, kill animals/fish, melt snow, and loot generic cabins and houses. As I expected this update simply gives a larger total sandbox size, yet does nothing to enhance the gaming experience. If the devs are reading this, you guys need to do something new. Stop working on generic maps that give you close to nothing new to do, finish the storyline cuz that ♥♥♥♥ sounds like it could be fun as hell. Work on a more complex crafting system, and in general start thinking outside the box because currently you guys just seem to be adding more of the same ♥♥♥♥ with the smallest of changes. It's just sad to see a game like this that has a lot of potential follow a one way street that is taking it nowhere. I hope anyone reading this review doesn't misunderstand me, I personally like this game and I am rooting for it. However, the way it is going it's just simply not worth the money, anyone considering this game should wait until it's fully released (comes out of early access). ***Update on review*** This is not an update for the game, just wanted to comment on all the feedback that this review has been getting. First off let me start by thanking everyone who contributed to this review, I am amazed at how much attention this has gotten! Getting to the point though, a lot of you have been posting stupid replies that in no way contribute to the effectiveness of this review. If you want to comment on my opinion, by all means. I will leave comments up here that disagree with me because everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but if you comment repetitive spam that does not contribute to this review it will be removed. Stuff like "youre stupid man this game is awesome dont listen to him" is not useful for people doing research on this game. If you want to dispute my opinion at least put in some time and give reasons as to why you think I am wrong, I will gladly leave those kinds of comments up. @Hinterland, all of your comments will be removed because this a non-biased review written by a consumer who supports your game and wants it to grow. That being said, it is unfair that 90% of other reviews, gameplay videos and stuff like that misrepresent what the average consumer will get out of this game. I suggest you take all the criticism you get from all of your negative reviews with grace and use them to further the development of this game because the negative reviews are the ones that help you guys figure out what needs to be improved on. Big thanks to everyone for the support, you guys are awesome! :)Show moreShow less
Ok, I am in and alive for 13 days - my best game so far. I've finally made a good start. I started slowly. Gathered supplies from the coastal area, made an empty home my safehouse. Hell, I had a fridge with 40Kg of food. I had so much food I was forced to stuff Chocolate Bars and Cooked Meat in Drawers... I even had a special Cabinet with Dog Food only. Then I had endless meds... my bathroom was a pharmacy, antiseptics, antibiotics, and so many bandages I could make a blanket with them. I also had a good trap-thing going on. Had snares all around the place, bagging game each time I went out scouting. Hares mainly. God, I had three shelves full of raw hare meat, ready to be cooked. I must have had 50L of water in the Freezer, and another 10L on me... I've fought wolves barehanded. Many wolves. I had gathered half the available resources of the game in one house. MY safehouse. I could sleep and eat in the house for 40 days straight, without having to go out. I could get that freakin' achievement of surviving for 50 days just by sleeping and eating - I had a good thing going on. Today, I woke up early - 5:08 to be precise. Thought of going out for a walk, it's so peaceful at this early hour. As I watched the sun rise in the horizon, I heard a cracking noise below me. The ice broke. I died.Show moreShow less
EDIT: This review is indeed out of date! Hence why I included the date in it originally, part of the problem with early access. So take it with a grain of salt, and I'll certainly update it when I get back to it all for another peek. Original review: It seems "not recommended" reviews get downvoted to hell but I'll try my best to explain ASAP. Early Access review as of early January 2015: TLD has a very outstanding art style, reminiscent of Telltale's Walking Dead games, and is largely a PVE scavenging game. There's unfortunately very little motivation to go very far as it is. There's very little crafting, no building, and you're not so much 'lost in the wild' as you are just moving from house to house with some stuff in between, scavenging. I realize it's in alpha and there's more to come...but at the moment there isn't much there. However...what IS there is very good, the art style, UI, the world and levels, the mechanics behind the survival aspects like hunger and warmth, etc. There just isn't too much level interaction, creativity, and a lot of just waiting around. Lots of waiting. You don't actually gather wood, you wait. Cooking food? Wait. Sleeping, crafting, scavenging.. is all waiting. "Not recommended" is NOT the same thing as "this is a bad game" or "I don't like it." It's just at this particular moment, I wouldn't say there's enough in there to really get it. Will edit my review as time goes on and mechanics change. I like what there is so far, and it looks promising.Show moreShow less

Please stop banning and silencing people for making criticism of your game. Refusing the community feedback by banning these individuals even in reddit is not a goodfaith action. Though I love the game, for this reason, I can not give it a thumbs up since the developer team is outright dictatorial.Show moreShow less

It's been YEARS, and the story still isn't finished. Releasing DLC for an incomplete game and coming out of Early Access unfinished. Meanwhile, they already have a page for The Long Dark 2. I will never support this company again.Show moreShow less

I’ve owned The Long Dark since 2014, back when it first launched into early access, and for a very long time I considered it my favorite game of all time. That’s what makes writing this review so frustrating. Let me be clear: the game itself is not bad. In fact, at its best, The Long Dark is one of the most atmospheric and immersive survival experiences ever made. The quiet isolation, the art style, the slow, methodical gameplay loop, it’s something special. I’ve had plenty of genuinely memorable moments over the years. But this review isn’t just about the game...... it’s about how it’s been handled. We waited over a decade for this game to be finished. Story mode began rolling out in 2017, and since then it has been a constant cycle of missed deadlines, delays, and overpromises. After waiting all these years for the final chapter, I won’t spoil anything, but it simply did not meet expectations given the time investment players have made. The bigger issue is Hinterland as a company. This isn’t a case like other studios pushing out repetitive yearly releases, the problem here is different. Hinterland released an unfinished product, continued to sell additional unfinished content, and repeatedly failed to deliver on timelines they themselves set. “Tales from the Far Territory” is a perfect example. Selling a DLC in an incomplete state with the promise of future updates might be acceptable if those updates were delivered reliably, but they weren’t. Deadlines came and went, again and again. Updates felt inconsistent in quality, and some additions (like the infamous cougar cutscene) felt completely out of place and underwhelming. On top of that, there’s been growing frustration within the community regarding how criticism is handled. Players have reported being banned or silenced on official forums for voicing negative feedback about the game. Whether intentional or not, it creates the impression that honest criticism isn’t welcome, which only further disconnects the developers from the community that supported them for years. Another major red flag: starting work on a sequel before the original game was even finished. That decision alone speaks volumes. It gives the impression that the studio wanted to move on but couldn’t fully do so without at least somewhat wrapping up the original product to preserve their reputation and future sales. And at the center of it all is leadership. From a player’s perspective, it feels like constructive criticism has largely been ignored over the years. There’s a strong sense that feedback isn’t welcomed unless it aligns with a specific vision and that disconnect has only grown as time has gone on. What makes this all sting more is that the foundation is incredible. The Long Dark truly feels like the “Mona Lisa” of survival games unique, influential, and capable of brilliance. But that brilliance has been overshadowed by years of mismanagement, poor communication, and broken expectations. I wanted to love this game forever. For a long time, I did. But after ten years of waiting, hoping, and being let down, I just can’t recommend it the way I used to. And honestly, I’m worried about what this means for the future.
