Our Verdict
2026 landslide, not a sleeper hit

The Mermaid Mask feels like a game that knows exactly when it’s showing up. It drops on July 16, 2026 on PC, Switch, Switch 2, and PS5, and the reception so far has been strong — Metacritic sits at 84, which lines up with the general buzz. This is also the fourth Detective Grimoire game, and yes, it’s the proper follow-up to Tangle Tower, not some side note. If you’ve been waiting for this series to tighten up, it does. Even Game Informer reportedly called it the best one yet, and honestly, that makes sense once you see how confident it is about pacing, presentation, and tone.
What makes it feel current is that it doesn’t just rely on puzzle-box nostalgia. The clues are 3D objects you can physically spin around, the whole thing is fully voiced, and the score was recorded by the Budapest Art Orchestra. That combo gives the game a weirdly cinematic energy for a point-and-click mystery. It’s still a locked-room murder story on a sketchy submarine, sure, but it plays more like a little movie you’re helping steer than a cold logic exercise. That’s the real selling point here.
If you want to solve it yourself, this may be too nice to you

Here’s the blunt part: this is not the game for hardcore detective players who want to wrestle the case to the ground. The difficulty is low, the hint system is eager, and a lot of the puzzle flow feels closer to matching up a bank of 50-plus clues than doing brutal, freeform deduction. The story is also heavily guided, so if you like staring at a notebook and building your own theory from scratch, you’re probably going to feel boxed in pretty fast. The ending is easy to guess, too, which takes some sting out of the final stretch.
But if you like good writing, strong performances, and a mystery that keeps moving, that’s a different story. Amber Lee Connors gets a lot of room to bounce between sarcasm and empathy, and the rest of the cast all have their own voice identities, so the submarine crew never feels like wallpaper. This is the kind of game that works for people who enjoy being led by the nose a little, as long as the writing is sharp enough to make that feel fun instead of lazy. If you’re a puzzle newbie, that’s actually a plus.
The best buy is the one that matches how patient you are

If you’re wondering where to play it, I’d keep it simple. On PC, it’s the cleanest fit for a point-and-click mystery like this, especially if you like clicking through dialogue and clue screens without fighting the controls. Switch and Switch 2 make sense if you want it as a handheld case to chip away at in shorter sessions. PS5 is there if you just want to sit back on the couch and let the whole thing play out like a TV mystery. There’s no DLC to wait for, and with a main story that runs about three to four hours across six chapters in two acts, you’re not signing up for some giant endless commitment.
And that short runtime is part of the calculation. If you’re the kind of player who wants replay value, multiple branches, or a mystery that keeps changing under your feet, this probably won’t stay in your rotation for long. But if you care more about script, character work, and presentation, then The Mermaid Mask is easy to recommend right now. It’s a sharper, more welcoming pitch than Return of the Obra Dinn, which is still the harder nut to crack — but also the one that’s more likely to bounce off newer players. This one wants to be watched, heard, and enjoyed as much as solved.

So convoluted and so much clicking (48 clues x 9 characters and then some!), boring/unrelatable characters, moon logic puzzles and just way, way too long. The original game Detective Grimoire is so much tighter and cleverer than this. This'll be the last game I buy from these devs sadly.Show moreShow less
Endlessly charming, stylistic and incredible art, impeccable voice acting and a great point-and-click detective game with minor puzzles and SO. MUCH. DIALOGUE. Which never feels like a slog because of aforementioned great qualities. These are all things that the Detective Grimoire games have always had. The sequel does not shy away from being absolutely gorgeous, being funny with its duo of detectives, being emotional gripping with its suspects, and with its mysteries being captivating to explore and understand. Now with 3D models and a slightly longer game time (at around 10 hours). And so the question is: Does it improve upon the very obvious shortcoming of its predecessor, and for that matter, is it even necessary to play it, Tangle Tower, if it is? The answer is that it is absolutely better than Tangle Tower by a long shot, yet you still must play Tangle Tower before it. There are certain moments in this game that get your eyes wide open as it calls back to things in Tangle Tower that you simply can't understand nor enjoy without knowing. They aren't necessary per se to enjoy The Mermaid Mask, but you will lose a decent bit of emotional understanding without experiencing all the additional information from Tangle Tower. As for the improvements, this game has by far the best finale of all the Detective Grimoire games, which was the sticking point of Tangle Tower. The build up to its story is well-done, and it absolutely nails the climax too. Its culprit is by far the most well-executed of the three, and that's including Secret of the Swamp too, and the crime and motive definitely makes the most sense too. It's also reasonably solvable before the final act, although you wouldn't be able to figure out all of its mysteries so easily either, while also still resolving pretty much every single thing in the game. Aside from the lingering mystery beneath it all of course. There's room for another sequel here, but time will tell if SFB Games will make it. I can see that the Grimoire games take a LOT of effort, but by god I would be so happy to see the conclusion of this mysterious throughline building through them. A perfect Detective Grimoire game I would say.Show moreShow less
It pains me to give a negative review, but I just lost hours of progress on this game due to save issues, and for a story based game, that kills my desire to play further. It insists it is autosaving. As far as I can tell, it isn't. Not a single save was made in hours of playing (my second session). When I closed the game, I pressed quit to desktop in the proper way, and there was a little marker reassuring me my progress would save. But it didn't. Bafflingly, there's no manual save or load option in the game. Pressing escape toggles between fullscreen and windowed (why???) instead of opening a menu. I can't begin to explain why they've made these decisions. Put a proper saving and loading menu in your game! And please fix the autosaving bugs.Show moreShow less
EDIT: it slaps bought on launch day, as I've done with all SFB games 3 hours / 20% in, no notes, it's perfect so far the puzzles are great, the voice acting is great, i'm so engaged in this story to far will update my review when i'm done with it but this rocks so far and i know people look to early reviews as a vibe-assessment yall it's great, get in here hell yeah dudeShow moreShow less
I want to like this game, I really do. The characters, the setting, the dialog, the visuals - it's all great. The reason I don't like it is the gameplay itself. Namely, the process of investigation is so incredibly tedious. There are too many clues, too many characters, and the unpredictability as to who might know something means the bulk of the game is spend asking character X about object Y, over and over again, until something useful comes up. That, and the already laborious process of spot-the-object clue finding, means it felt like a chore to play. The mystery itself is solid, and the conclusion is alright, but the slog of getting there means I was left with a "thank god it's over" feeling at the end of it. Not exactly a sign of a great experience.Show moreShow less
This game and Tangle Tower... They both have great way with words. Like each sentence spoken, be it in conversation or item description everything is done with feels and outstanding quality. They can read me milk bottle plaquette and I would be impressed. To have all voice actors put life into their characters, animators and sound designers creating such synch is just insanity to me. Then soundtrack starts and it turns into magic again. You may not like riddle/talk type of games but you have to appreciate the world they are creating and the means they use to achieve their goals. Soul is a thing that is really hard to find in modern games.Show moreShow less

💎INDIE GEM BADGE💎 Having played the first two games on Steam and enjoyed them a lot (also the original Flash game back in the day), I find this game exceeds them. Detective Grimoire is back with another case to solve. He received a letter about the murder of Captain Magnus Mortuga in his own submarine. He and his partner Sally arrived at the seemingly abandoned fishing town, waiting for their contact, having stayed all night in the wretched down inn. Grimoire decided to search the town, only to find the submarine where the murder had occurred. Hopping in, they started searching the rooms, interviewing the suspects, and gathering all the information needed about their victim. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3767458160 The story is extremely well written; the dialogue, the characters' interactions, and the way things unfolded were out of this world. The gameplay is like the previous one; you roam around the submarine, checking rooms, interacting with almost everything, checking all items and collecting them as evidence, which you can later use to ask the suspects about them. You don't have to keep notes aside to remember everything. The developer has kept everything organised, and you can access everything you've discussed with the suspects under each item, including what they said about each other. It does make the deduction section easy at times; however, I found a couple of them challenging. The puzzles are fun and different from the common ones, and while there is no skip option, none of them was frustrating. If you fail to solve them, the characters will give you a hint on how to solve them. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3767458127 The voice acting is top-notch! They captured each character's personality perfectly, making them all likeable. I didn't dislike any of them, and when I learned in the credits that one voice actor played two totally different characters, it made me appreciate their work so much more. The soundtracks are outstanding. I do wish we had an option to download them; they were so good, and each character theme is fitting! The artwork is immaculate; the character design, room details, and animations are phenomenal! I even loved the concept art they provided after you finished the game, and the artist's insight made my heart swell. Just like in the previous game, I appreciated the time and love everyone poured into this game. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3767012211 Pros: +Immaculate artwork and locations. +Well-written murder mystery story. +Interesting characters and perfectly captured their different personality. +Fun and great soundtracks. +Useful notes and list of items to help you with your investigation. +Original puzzles. +Great animation and character design. +Fast travel map. +Mystery/detective style. +Outstanding voice-over. Cons: -You can't skip puzzles. I can't recommend this game enough; it ticks the boxes in every aspect. I wish there were more games like this, and I can't wait for a new Detective Grimoire adventure.
