Not What I Expected I know that there are most people are really happy with the game and are giving it positive reviews but I have to step in here with a negative review. This is based on quite a few things but mostly I will be focused on the price tag and content loop that the game provides you with. First off you should know that a playthrough of this game can be done with a "you win" ending in about less than 10 minutes. On stream my second shift I managed to get the right body and immediately guessed the house and name of the demon and burned it and won. It was quite literally less than 10 minutes total. That's one game loop done. Was it unusual that I got everything right on the first body and chose correctly? Yes but it can be done. Now that's not all of the ending and all of the little story bits but that was one shift and I finished the game. Knowing that, you should know that on average a single playthrough is probably 45 minute to an hour or so. My issue? What you're doing for that 45 minutes or so is the same. exact. thing. every. time. The loop of the game is pull out a body, run through a checklist of 10 or so steps and then there will be some spooky things that happen in between you doing that, but you always have to do all the steps. The tools are tedious to use and you'll have the steps memorized after your first shift. It just seems to me a way to fill time while the game tries to place scares around you while you work. I actually really enjoyed the demo when there was a lot happening in the room but the full release just felt like "I am doing a checklist and some stuff happens around me that I can ignore and move on". All of the jumpscares were fairly bland with a person usually just standing there staring at you before they just zoom towards you. You'll start to see the exact same scares by your second shift making them rather tedious too. The argument is going to be that every playthrough is different and each playthrough is. You'll get tiny bits of haunted scenes and little bits of story each run but the scenes are short and just don't feel super impactful. By the end of the second shift as spooky stuff happens around you... you just ignore it. Your screen may go wavy and orange or there may be noises but you can just ignore them because you know nothing bad is going to happen. You just try to get through it as quickly as possible and move on until you can identify the correct body. I played this game for a little over 4 hours and I feel like I really only truly had 45 minutes of real content just because of everything happening that's the same every run. I'm not just being contrarian to everyone here I just really feel like the price tag for what you're getting is not correct. That's not even mentioning the bugs that I ran into a few of which made me restart entire runs. Bodies getting stuck on previous steps so you can't process them, a hard crash to the desktop, tools that don't work properly, cutscenes that get stuck etc. At one point in my run it started raining inside permanently and at the beginning of another run there was a sound effect that continued to play for my entire run. I really was looking forward to this game but I was left sorely disappointed with what I got in the game. I like DarkStone and thought the Book of Dread was absolutely excellent but this just wasn't it. tl;dr - The gameplay loop becomes quickly tedious and samey and you'll spend quite a lot of time repeating the same menial tasks for minimal payoff. If the price were cut in half I would feel at least a little better about my purchase.Show moreShow less
This game was so scary that I refunded it and gifted it to my friend to play instead (while I watch). I would definitely recommend this game.Show moreShow less
I'm unfortunately going to have to give it a negative review. It's a novel concept, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. Lots of people will tell you that it's a terrifying game with lots of jump scares, but I'd be surprised if those people aren't just saying so after watching streamers overact for their audiences. After the first run it was one of the least scary horror games I've played in a while, because you quickly realise that all the jump scares during your shift can't hurt you. The only thing that can "hurt" you is picking the wrong corpse or not finishing in time. This means that the jump scares quickly go from being scary to being annoying. In a game like Visage, seeing a ghost or paranormal event is scary, because it can kill you and force you to replay a section of the game. In this game? The ghost is just going to zoom towards you, disappear into the wall, close the door, etc and... that's it. During one run I was busy embalming a corpse and in the corner of the screen I saw a ghostly arm appear. I stopped what I was doing, walking toward the arm so that it would go away and then continued the embalming process. Not sure what's supposed to be scary there. There also isn't an awful lot of variety. I saw the same jump scares repeating themselves in my second run already. Combine this with the fact that embalming corpses is literally the exact same process every single time and you're not allowed to do any part of the checklist out of order, and you've got a pretty repetitive game. What I'd consider improving: Some randomisation in the embalming process. Add a couple more tasks and then pull random tasks from a pool for each corpse so that you can't predict what you're going to have to do. This will cut down a bit on the tedium. Add a lot more variety to the kind of paranormal entities you can encounter. 4 just isn't enough. Spice up the jump scares as well. Have some jump scares be able to kill you if you do the wrong thing. I know that some people won't like dying when they're already deep into a shift, but we need a sense of risk and danger during the shifts. Maybe give us an easy and hard difficulty, with easy being as it is now, where nothing during the shift can kill you. As it stands right now, it's not a game I can recommend at 25€.Show moreShow less
I might have a biased opinion since I made the music, but I enjoyed my playthrough of the game and can easily say that my heart skipped a beat NUMEROUS times. The haunt system is truly unique and caters to each individual player differently depending on their play-style. So if you're on the fence, I say give it a go!Show moreShow less
I had to think hard on whether I recommended this game or not, because I LOVED the demo a lot, but I ultimately had to decide on the negative. As of writing this review, I have played 8.8 hours of this game, 6.5 hours of which I was still on one ending, due to countless bugs and confusing gameplay. Let me just start by expressing how amazing the scares are in this game, superbly well-timed jumpscares, great overall tension, and you are led into a false sense of security when getting stuck into the body embalming mechanic, so when the scares come, they are terrifying. It's just really unnerving and the sound design is just fabulous. However, when you play for hours on end, hitting bugs that made you have to restart, the scares and the whole game play becomes so repetitive and frustrating. The main bug for me was the sigils not appearing on the foreheads, in which you end up being possessed if you don't take a random guess at which body it is, which is highly frustrating. If you fail a shift, you start another right from the beginning of a brand new one and it get more of an irritating chore to embalm 3 bodies every single time, especially if it's a bug error, and not a mistake of you missing something. A BIG tip, - Make sure you fully read the computer resources, listen to the tapes on the desk, and read the instructions on the items you pick up for the demonic hunting portion. I found it extremely difficult to understand, and when it finally clicked, the bugs that didn't provide you with the demonic evidence you need to burn a body, makes your hard work not worthwhile in the slightest. I still have two endings to find, but the other 3 have basically been exactly the same minus a few script changes at the end which add nothing to the story, not rewarding at all unfortunately. This full game is not worth even the sale price it is at (I got it for £17, RRP is £19.49 which is even more extortionate). I like to think that game creators deserve so much for their hard work, and it's clear the creator has worked long and hard on this game, but I cannot justify the price for a game that is so unclear in it's gameplay and story and is so buggy, that you are forced to repeat progress to the point that it comes uninteresting and loses it's fear factor. There's just too much going on and the game doesn't really know what it wants to be. I hope that this game continues to be patched, but still, for me the game was difficult to understand and just became frustrating. I streamed this game, and even with the help of others, we all struggled to pick up the gameplay mechanics, even with some tips from walk-throughs. It's like there's too much going on. To me, it should keep in the mortuary elements as they are, you easily pick this part up with practice as you do so many of them, but either take out the demonic hunting element, or take out the story flashback elements. There's too much going on. Also, I find that when you get into the final stages of being possessed, it does not give you enough time to burn your selected body, that's if the sigil even appears. The only thing that carries this game is it's phenomenal scares and horror elements, but everything else falls so flat for me and I'm so disappointed as I really tried hard to love it. But I cannot recommend this game.Show moreShow less

Target Audience: Horror Fans....Who are patient. Summary: I honestly wish I could give this game the thumbs up, as the atmosphere of the game and the creepiness of some of the gameplay mechanics is pretty good in the horror genre. The game understands that keeping the player on tilt while not just blasting jump scares at the player. You're waiting for the next issue to come around the corner, and the sound/visual design does a great job of putting you on edge. The story behind it isn't anything special, but the different “stories” that you come across like the drug scenario does want me to push forward. The gameplay is simple but effective, although when it comes to some of the demon/spiritual elements, the game doesn't do the greatest job on the tutorial. The game in essence has all the hallmarks of a great game. So you're probably wondering why I'm giving it a negative review. Well, the game can't seemingly stop breaking on me, and sometimes it's even hard to tell when the game has broken. Like, the game messes with you, and yes, there are times where your inputs are not being taken in because the game is waiting for you to hit a scripted event. That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about scenarios where a rune on a wall literally disappears, so you have no idea what symbol you need to use. Or doesn't even appear in the first place. Or it starts a cutscene and then just leaves you in a black room......forever. On top of that, based on other footage that I've seen, I'm not sure why the symbols aren't always appearing on the corpses heads once everything is ready to go, sometimes the game just decides.....nah. It doesn't help when the ending in the stream clip below......well it's hilarious, I'll give it that, but it points to the game's biggest problem. It's bug prone: and bug prone in a way that doesn't allow me to complete it fairly. That's the only reason why this is getting a negative review, and quite frankly, I'm really hoping that it's a just me scenario. But until that can be proven, I have to tell players to avoid the game....for now. Stream Clip: https://clips.twitch.tv/AcceptableObservantWalletLeeroyJenkins-2BhCdNdEcIucZCKc Lists: Positives: Game's atmosphere does a fantastic job of keeping you on edge in various ways (small things in the background, jumpscares when needed). Mechanics enhance the atmosphere gameplay wise where you're keeping looking over your shoulder. Great sound design to enhance tense moments or make you wonder if something happened down the road. Solid story for scenarios that go hand and hand with gameplay in a lot of ways, makes me want to see more of what it has to offer. Honestly, it has everything package wise for a horror game that I'd want. But..... Negative: Riddled with bugs that stop progress, not allow you to do actions, and confuse you to the point where you just get frustrated and leave. The major problem on top of that is when the game compounds the bugs with messing with you, you just get frustrated as there's no clear path to fix it or determine what's going on. Model mouth movement is either missing key frames or just is overly sped up, because it can feel unnatural when it's not supposed to feel unnatural. Funny enough, the most normal is when the demons are involved. A lack of clarification of some mechanics, especially with the demon naming/symbols on the head lead to confusion on if you're missing a step (and may be tied to the bugs). I almost passed out during the tutorial. 10/10Show moreShow less
The story is fun, but the gameplay unfortunately isn't. Embalming gets old really fast. It just feels like an unnecessarily drawn-out and clunky experience just to pad out the lack of content.Show moreShow less
