Our Verdict
The most accurate way to describe The Riftbreaker is not as a safe, well-made game, but as a “lopsided work” with clear selling points and equally obvious barriers. Its core appeal is easy to see: the combination of base building and action combat creates a rhythm of constant distraction, constant firefighting, and constant adrenaline. You’re not just fighting a battle—you’re maintaining a system that is itself shaped in reverse by combat. That idea is valuable. Very valuable.
But its problems are just as clear. Critical reception is sharply divided, with scores ranging from 7s to 1s; more troubling, many aspects still lack sufficiently solid, verifiable information. This makes it unlike the kind of game whose strengths and weaknesses are plainly laid out in the open—you can’t easily tell in advance whether its rhythm will click with you. As for visuals, audio, story, and depth of content, the current impression is closer to “there’s no proof they’re especially strong” than “they’ve already proven to be strong enough.”
So, is it worth your time? If what you want is exactly this kind of hybrid experience—expanding a base while enduring the pressure of insect swarms—then it’s worth putting in a dozen to dozens of hours to try, as long as you don’t go in expecting an all-around masterpiece. But if you care more about narrative momentum, memorable audiovisual presentation, or want every system to feel polished and intuitive, then it’s probably better to wait for a more favorable time to jump in. My conclusion isn’t extreme: worth trying, but keep your expectations in check.
One-sentence recommendation: If you love building bases and fighting bugs, give it a try.

Good lord, this is a game that makes me excited about what games are becoming. This is a refinement of so many good ideas which inspired its predecessors. At first glance, it just looks like prettier Factorio. But it has defined itself by emphasizing gameplay elements which Factorio marginalized in order to do what Factorio is super good at: logistics. Factorio was defined by elaborate resource chains feeding intricately into complicated recipes, wrapped in a giant logistical metagame. Rift Breaker is all about the biters. The essential resource-acquisition expansion research metagame exists similar to a Factorio map, but the game has taken the emphasis off laying belts (and later railroads) and put it on exploring the map on foot while fighting packs of monsters in action sequences clearly inspired by the best ARPGs. Fighting the monsters is insanely satisfying in a way I haven't experienced since a bone sliver build playing Diablo III. It's so smooth and satisfying. You're scouting for resource patches, but also there are sites where you can get a lump of resources, mods for your weapons, or find bosses which unlock unique research options. Slaying enough monsters of a given type also unlocks research options and it feels weirdly but satisfyingly like level ups. And then you get the notification a horde is coming, and suddenly you're playing Dungeon Defenders in front of a wall out of They Are Billions. I've played 40 days on Hard and these packs are getting *monstrous.* I see the blob on radar and go, "wat." You fall back to your turrets and pray. And oh man, the campaign is similar to the overworld of Anno 2205 (or a set of Terraria world saves). You ultimately get the option to teleport between a bunch of maps with different biomes, building bases on all of them and contributing to your shared pool while picking and choosing quests. The gaming industry... has the unfortunate tendency to be slow to realize new ideas. There's not a lot of experimentation among AAA titles. Rift Breaker is really special because it's a very sophisticated version of a type of game you'd only be likely to find as a smaller project. It's a high-level realization of many concepts that have never quite been put together like this and it's fire. There are going to be some people who say Factorio was better, or it's dumbed down or some nonsense because the emphasis Factorio placed on base logistics, Riftbreaker moved to arcade-esque ARPG goodness and tower defense. Those people think they need to prove something. Look, I love to play Zachtronics games like the other nerds but the day I say no to beer and Mario Kart I need somebody to shoot me because I'm already dead inside. Riftbreaker absolutely stands on its own by virtue of the only criteria that truly matters: It's fantastically fun. Recommend without reservation.Show moreShow less
Bought the game because they advertise on COOP soon... been 2 years. Now 2nd DLC BEFORE the promised coop mode... come on. I will be positive when the promised COOP will be delivered. Edit : 1 year and a half later... stil no coop available. More DLC... Edit March 2025 : still no coop, more DLC out, communication about a "closed BETA" coop mode... what a joke. I honestly feel scammed by their communication during BETA period about "soon coop". I did not need this game solo, I needed it coop... 3 years ago. The level of BS is spilled out by the studio is amazing.Show moreShow less
The story of Riftbreaker, not the story in the game, but the story *of* the game, is a fascinating one, and one which the big development studios should take notice of. This review is being written August 25, 2025, when the Co-Op function was added to the game, but I've been playing it since release. I would have recommended it back then, but now I absolutely have to. This game was made with no intention of multiplayer functionality, but because it's the perfect kind of game to play with friends, there was a huge outpouring of requests for it and the devs at EXOR set about the herculean task of adding multiplayer. Through the long saga of this function's development, they've kept up a regular series of updates on the process, but didn't skimp on regular gameplay content releases at the same time. EXOR is an exemplar of game development studios, willing to put in the hard work for something their community deeply desires. As for the game itself, if you liked the factorybuilder games that came before, and the tower-defense elements that some of them had, Riftbreaker will feel like a familiar but fresh experience, with its own innovations and focuses on the genres. The story mode is fantastic with phenomenal voice acting as well. I cannot recommend this game enough. Riftbreaker is what happens when devs are passionate about their project and willing to put in the hard work to see it through. EXOR is a model that other devs should aspire to, and Riftbreaker is a helluva fun time.Show moreShow less
I bought this game when it was new on the promise that co-op was in development. I've been patiently waiting for years... I'm leaving a negative review now because they've released yet another DLC before delivering on the co-op mode that was promised. I honestly don't think they ever will.Show moreShow less
I've been waiting for this game for a long time and so far the expectations were meet. Hack and Slash + tower defense its all i ever wanted in a game! Edit: After some of us reach a certain age, with family, job, other hobbies, etc our time to play is almost non-existent, and with the litle time that we can spare to play it seems that most games aren't that fun anymore. But once in a while some amazing devs come up with some neat games, those games may be buggy, clunky, with outaded graphics, etc but oh boy, how fun it is to play them. So hell yeah i will give those games a positive review!Show moreShow less
I bought this game because it was advertised with "multiplayer cooperative just around the corner". Two and a half years later, this feature is still nowhere to be found, and surprisingly absent from the steam store page. Instead of working on DLCs doublind the price of the game, how about adding the feature promised in the first place?Show moreShow less
ADD MULTIPLAYER PLEASE! P.S.: 25.08.2025 - almost 4 years after, we did it!Show moreShow less

-You want Factorio with more aliens and less automation? -You want Age of Empires with more walls and castle turtling? -You want tower defense with 3rd person RPG? Then buy this.Show moreShow less
If you want to wait around for this to be complete, keep waiting. Still can not play the other biomes on survival mode, but hey a new "expansion" for another $9.99 gives you more stuff, that probably should have just been in the original game. But hey, this is where this industry is headed.Show moreShow less
