Honestly, 1.0 update sucks. Devs pumped grind like x3-x5 times to already quite grindy game without too much content added (extra wizard and boss and that's it, the rest is just fluff). Third of achivements are extremely dull and requires a lot of playtime without any challenge except patience. Spicy content of extra covenants locked behind insane grind. You need to play probably 20-30 matches (maybe more) to reach max level of a wizard, then reset and repeat again just to unlock one covenant. And then repeat it like 8 more times to unlock the rest. Some quests are like 10 times harder to do than the others and nearly impossible to do on hardcore. On the bright side, coop is quite fun and it is nice to play a few times with friends.Show moreShow less
Disclaimer: giving this a positive since there is no neutral option, and the fun I used to have with this game doesn't deserve a negative. So this one literally came out of Early Access two days ago. In Early Access it was fun. 1.0 came with such an exponential level of grind that the game Grind Survivors doesn’t feel true to it’s name anymore. They reworked a bunch of systems for full release which is fine. First huge grind increase is you now get less game currency (no there is no premium currency or ability to buy currency with real money) while at the same time the cost of everything went up. For instance I had everything unlocked and a stash of gold in my wallet before 1.0. After release I have half the stuff I used to have after spending all my gold, and I have to farm more gold than I made in all my game play to date to unlock the rest. And that doesn’t even cover what’s next. Secondly not only did the cost go up, but an entire new progression system for the wizards was added that costs vaults upon vaults of currency to move through so that even Scrooge McDuck probably can’t unlock everything even with his massive amount of gold. The average mission round (around 20 minutes I think) gets you 400-600 gold. The new ascension system for the wizards costs you 6300 gold for the first ascension. Yeah convert that to hours folks, and then multiply by 15 since that’s how many wizards there are, and also keep in mind that the cost goes up with each ascension since it's more than one per wizard. Hope you like grind with your coffee and cream. Speaking of wizards, the next thing is the brand new 15th wizard with a mechanic vastly different from all others. While every other wizard at least uses their spells in the direction their facing so you know where they will land, this wizard drops items randomly around them. The best part is they don’t do anything until you run into the middle of their circle to touch them, and will disappear if not touched in a small window of time. And unlike every other wizard that gets more time they can stand still effectively as they progress, you literally do no damage unless you can touch something you have no control where it gets placed. Like in the middle of a swarm of enemies you would die trying to go through. Or on the other side of a big rock wall so you can’t get to it. Or someplace with no enemies while you are surrounded on all sides. And to top it off, one of the new wizard’s unlocks requires them to suicide on a boss and it be their death knell that kills the boss - not any other spell, spell effect, elemental DOT, finger poke, random enemy explosion, friendly wink, gust of wind, hurtful glaring look, or accidental fart passed through clenched cheeks. I’ve spent hours trying to get this unlock done with the infinitesimal amount of death damage you deal against the massive HP pool of a boss mob and still haven’t gotten it. Top it off with a new punishing co-op mechanic that boots people from a match if they are “idle” for a short amount of time. Like say you are playing on endless mode and your crew can stand in one place and kill fast enough - boot. Or maybe you stop moving to run to the bathroom quick or grab a drink because you’ve been playing for an hour non-stop - boot. Or maybe your kid asked you a question and you looked away from the screen for a couple minutes to be a good parent - boot. So now not only is your grind an exponent of exponentially more, but you can’t even do that grind co-op unless you have an AI play for you since they don’t have human biological needs. So the new generation of devs apparently hate people having fun and think games should require more work than actual work.Show moreShow less
The 1.0 update has removed the ability to unlock characters through completing achievements, and instead must be purchased with in-game gold that you grind for, which you were already spending on giving yourself permanent upgrades. Said permanent upgrades have been changed to cost a lot more money in order to artificially inflate the grind, and it feels not so great to playShow moreShow less
A Vampire survivors like game with co-op option. This game is in Early Access and is still receiving updates. There are 3 difficulties to try and you can infuse your spells with elemental upgrades. Pros: - Good graphics and reminds me of DOTA 2. - Multiple characters to unlock and 8 can be unlocked as of this review. - Works well with xbox controller and controls are responsive. Cons: - Friendly fire limits what builds you can use in co-op and forces you each member to clear enemies in different parts of map. - Lack of tutorial and explanation of keywords. There are FAQs added, but its posted on the news page and some players don't read that. - Only 1 boss to beat on the 3 maps. I expect more to be added later, but it would have been nice to fight other bosses. Suggestions: - Would be great to have a mini map like VS has to easily see where your team mates are. - Include Add friend feature for co-op games. Its hard to find co-op games during weekdays and this would help. - Add a in game timer so players know how long they have survived and is relevant for some steam achievements. - Add a time out penalty to players that quit game early especially if they do it multiple times in a short time period. This is done in multiplayer games like Among Us to punish players that do this. - Reduce friendly fire by 50% or more on normal difficulty. Makes it less fun and way more difficult when fighting bosses and finishing objectives. - Option to play with AI bots with specific difficulties such as beginner and intermediate and this is offered in some RTS games. If there are no players online, you wait 40 seconds just to play solo. - Add 3-5 seconds warning before objectives and the boss fight so players can prepare. - After picking an upgrade with co-op, there needs to be a 2-3 second pause so each player can get ready to move. I have lost health because another player picked an upgrade at a different time causing uncertainty when the level would resume. - Add daily challenge mode. Gives players a chance to try out characters that you have not unlocked yet and to add more variety than just having 1 mode. Conclusion: A reasonable VS game. Based on road map, more content is being added. Some QOL features can be added to improve the experience. Follow IndieGems for more reviews like this one.Show moreShow less
It says co-op but there is nothing co-operative about this game. The friendly fire means you just want to completely avoid other players at all times, there is zero synergy between players builds, no combos you can do or anything like that that would lead to a fun co-operative experience.Show moreShow less
Update after 40+ hours: I've gotten a lot of mileage out of this one! The devs seem commited to continue pushing out steady updates, so naturally, I have suggestions for small QoL changes of my own: - More in-depth tooltips for elemental infusions. For instance : How much more damage does an enemy affected by toxin take? What's the DoT per unit affected by fire? % move speed reduction on ice-affected enemies? Maximum bounces on lighting? - Cooldown, size, and % damage increase on individual individual spell stat page - List of spell upgrades taken - More relics available in endless mode (with more variety) - Larger maps - Visibility of caps/soft caps on stats like dodge and cooldowns - Additional objectives that incorporate/scale with the number of players alive in the match. During later stages, events become a "one person does it all" deal. It'd be fun to have everyone engaged! - Steam trading cards ☝️🤓 Some larger asks: - Mob density scaling in endless mode. It becomes grindier the longer you go on. Increasing spawn rate after each Solphish kill woukd keep progression feeling steady. - Being able to turn down the volume on other player's spell SFX, separate from your own. - In-game vote/party leader kicking.Show moreShow less
Update 9 They made the game worse? New element, spell and mobs are all lame. Reroll 4x and still dont get the element I want. Alt-F4 helps. Some of the relic reworks are good though. ------ Update 8 1. The main reason I don't recommend it in its current state... the game itself is too simple. The only thing to do is kill a bunch of mobs, then the boss. You beat the game once, and you've experienced the entirety of the game. 2. Searching for Lobby... Searching for Lobby...... Searching for Lobby......... Joining Game You have been disconnected. The matchmaking system is the worst system ever for a low player base. Its either entirely random and end up playing easy mode all day. Or you have to pick the EXACT thing you want, and pray someone else is too. Its just horrible. Its better than nothing, but it just sucks. 3. Endless mode needs more work too. WAY TOO SLOW after killing a boss. Trickle in the weakest mob for the first half of a round when we're already so strong... its boring. 4. The "bonus stats" on the mages needs a major boost too. Most are completely weak. +2 luck for example, Yay... so exciting (nope). These "buffs" are SO WEAK, I feel like I'm picking my starting spell more than I'm picking a specific mage. Because of this there is also one mage that is NERFED to the floor because the starting spell is too strong. -300 health and elements are more punishing to you. Why? Fix the spell rather than nerf the mage. The only reason to play this mage is for the starting spell. 5. Elements need some balancing too. Fire is pointless. You can only have 1 DoT at a time, and most mobs get hit (many many many) times before the DoT even "ticks" once. On the other end, Lightning and Ice elements are extremely powerful and pretty much mandatory. ---- The base game overall seems ok, it just needs more.Show moreShow less
I like the game and its really neat that its multiplayer because a lot of these types of games are not. They have a bunch of characters that have a lot of fun attacks and the upgrade system is intuitive but there is depth enough to strategize. it's a good game and I'd say get it for sure, but there are a few things that I wish I knew going in. ~ Friendly fire is active at the start until you get the upgrade to turn it off. My husband and I didn't know this and we almost stopped playing because we thought it would always be active and were not interested in friendly fire. (IDK who wants friendly fire but I feel like it should be automatically off and then turned on if desired.) ~ the lobby takes a long time to fill, if at all. I think this can only be fixed by more people playing. ~ When playing in an online lobby, there is only a limited list of phrases you can say to other online people and most of them are not super helpful. Assume you are going solo as there is no real way to coordinate but it does not making playing difficult, it just takes away the social aspect. Adding directions to where objectives are and some basic info (ex. I can/can't heal, I want to stay together/ split up) would be helpful.Show moreShow less
First, friendly fire is a bad mechanic in a survivor like game because it makes a co-op game feel like a solo game. It encourage you to avoid your friends and to never interact. You can't show off your build, you can't combo. Second, the balance is off. Luck is mathematically about 5x better than xp because base xp upgrade nets you one level at most while luck gets you about 5 rares per game, doubling an upgrade. Do not xp, it is awful in this game. Third, there is no one spell procs another spell. Your build is entirely your upgrades to one ability. It's like playing 4 different builds where the last two spells will always suck because you get them later. The upgrades you get are damage, cooldown, size to one ability. There is 0 interaction or do more damage to burning enemies or more lightning or anything like that. Fourth, The game ends WAY too soon. My character at the end feels about the same as the character at the start because my spells barely change.Show moreShow less
