If you've ever seen a fake ad for a mobile game called "Kingshot" this is where they stole that gameplay idea from that they don't actually use. Run around and build towers and buildings to survive waves as your dude fights (shoots, but based on weapon). Thronefall is one of those games that almost gets a thumbs up from me, but I think the changes I'd want to see before I could earnestly recommend this game are too fundamental for the devs to consider. The pitch is simple: It is Tower Defense. You build towers, they defend, enemies charge mindlessly at the towers to get mulched. Where it fails is, in my mind, primarily in trying to simplify the formula. Part of the importance of a good TD game, to me, has always been shaping the battlefield: Forcing enemies to take circuitous routes, placing towers so they can engage multiple enemies at once or the same enemy on multiple passes, that sort of thing. But Thronefall more or less completely removes this by having construction only happen on nodes that can only accept one specific building each. This has multiple problems: Firstly, the aforementioned simplification. Secondly, it means that there's usually a very specific optimal build order for any given level rather than multiple viable solutions. Thirdly, certain build locations are "traps" that waste your resources since they're too vulnerable for economic buildings or terribly placed for defensive buildings. Accompanied by the fact that there's no respec(for the times when a building has multiple upgrades), no selling buildings back and in fact not even an "undo" button, a good bit of your time is just resetting runs until you get the optimal start, especially since the game has some "rich get richer" design issues where there's really no way to catch up to a bad start and a huge difference from a mediocre or perfect start. The Perk system also suffers from very limited slots and certain perks that are incredibly superior, especially since some of them have no drawback or synergize into very preferential setups. There are also some odd missing pieces that feel like the devs did not want to commit to a good game for keyboard/mouse players, like command groups for units(instead you have to ride up to them or their home building to order them around) or a way to zoom out enough to see the entire map at once on the bigger maps. A final issue is that most maps have multiple enemy approaches, but these approaches are not "built" evenly. Some of them see only a few waves or very easy waves, meaning that overspending on defending them is the sort of thing that can force a reset of the entire map to get your resources back. High specialization of units and no respeccing of structures also means that if you "guess" wrong at what sort of enemies a map will toss at you, well, sucks to be you, time for another reset. Oh and there are what I assume are bugs, like the "fire tower's" fire ability either not working or just being so bad it might as well not. I've never once seen it actually trigger. Maybe some sort of indicator for the AoE(or ranges in general) when building would be helpful. Or the "tower/wall upgrades are cheaper over time"-upgrade for your town center... which only affects buildings already built, making it much worse than it ought to be. I think the best suggestion I could make to the devs that would not require a complete uprooting of the game would be to "loosen" the build slots somewhat: Small(house, tower), Medium(barracks of either kind, blacksmith, mill) and special(for docks, bridges, walls and gold mines, things that can't really have other locations). It would give maps multiple solutions and turn some of those extremely dubious defense/economy slots into usable ones again. Honestly, I wish I liked this game, but unfortunately it really doesn't feel fun. Maybe I have an issue with how most of the perks have downsides which make them almost negatives, maybe it's how on trying to get 6/6 you need to follow an exact formula otherwise you fail, maybe how it's the fact that A lot of the buildings seem like traps to pull a gotcha over the players. In any case I really wish I liked this game more, genuinely, but this really is not for me. Lets start with the positives. The Art style is a low poly, cartoon-ish, jam which really works quite well. Whoever did the art and 3d side nailed it right on the head and it looks great without ever tiring out. The sound is alright, I wouldn't say particularly stunning but it does it's job without outstaying it's welcome. I just wish that there was a bit more of a pop to things audibly. The concept is a great idea! 3D Kingdom with roguelike elements and perks is baller and I'm surprised no one has done anything like this before. But unfortunately this is where the downside begin for me. The tutorial felt like it did a great job of explaining the mechanics of the game, though as a small note I feel like the PC control scheme is horrendous, which likely impacted my enjoyment of the game. I don't think I should have to use left shift, ctrl, or alt when I have the rest of the keyboard and my right hand available. Maybe that's just me, because it seems to work for a lot of other people. The gameplay is actually quite simple, and that works in favour of the game in most cases but unfortunately I found that I wasn't engaged after completing the tutorial area. For me that's a bit of an issue, because I'm expecting the rest of the game to follow suit, so after seeing the 6 quests to be completed I decided to try and complete them all in one go. This is where pain begins. I found very quickly that if you don't follow an exact formula you will not get anywhere far, which unfortunately means that the perk system stopped being fun ways to alter your game play and more mandatory good and bad stats you are required to have to complete the mission (especially if you only have access to one, such as the beginning of the game). This also couples with the idea that your economic buildings don't produce anything the night they are destroyed, which again sounds like a great idea on paper, but in reality (for challenge mode) means that a single field going down kneecaps your power curve to the point that you are nigh on guaranteed to lose on one of the problem waves (providing your king doesn't die when kiting the enemies away which really doesn't tether for long enough). I think this brings me to the overall problem I have with this game. Losing doesn't feel fun. I know that's supposed to be the point, but when I play a game with rogue like element I'm expecting losing to be part of the formula, and if it's expected then I'm expecting some level of fun to arise out of it. Take slay the spire for example (not a fair comparison I know, but I can't really think of a similar game that I've played. This game is genuinely quite unique.), dying is an expected part of the process which means even on long runs it's fast and painless and super simple to get right back into the swing of things. In this game, dying is followed by a 10 second respawn timer (which is a surprisingly long period of inaction). This dying often leads to destroyed buildings, which as I mentioned earlier on early levels means a guaranteed loss. And the game over screen, feels like it takes too long after all of the other shenanigans that you've likely went through before this point. It wouldn't be a bad thing, if I could skip the loss screen but unfortunately I've not been able to. Maybe I wasn't pressing the right buttons, but the game's been conditioning me to only care about the left shift, ctrl & alt. If you enjoy the game, all the more power to you, and genuinely a round of applause to the devs because it's clear you've put in a lot of great work. But I don't think this game quite lives up to the expectations I was hoping it would be from the screen shots. Tl:dr - The game's idea is briliant, and the polish is great. But I don't quite think that the execution is quite there. I wish I could put in a mixed review but I'm forced to pick between a positive or negative.Show moreShow less

I was expecting Kingdom but with a more developed focus on strategy. It is basically that, in the worst possible aspects. You know it's a 'nice' strategy game when every unit you have access to (except the archer) is absolutely useless in every sense of the word. Even while focusing every upgrade on them and using them on mass you're far more reliable than they could ever hope to be, and a large part of it is that they're absolutely stupid. Oh, there's a bottleneck in that slope? I'll put some spears to block the horses; too bad, they get pushed aside so easily that they don't even slow them down. You put them in fixed positions and they just stand there, you let them roam with more freedom and they abandon their post and then simply chase an enemy they can't reach. Having no smart AI for the units or even a way of controlling them without having to get them first and guide them makes the game infinitely more difficult than it should be. You can't put the weight of the entire game on the player's shoulders if you don't give them the tools to properly direct it just because you want an easy controller scheme. The game is unfairly unbalanced on that regard. I've easily defended against two points of entry on my own but even an entire army can't reliable hold a single entrance; it's ludicrous for a tower defense game to have their defenses be the secondary means of victory. You need melee units as meat shields for the archers, but they're so expensive and scarce that you need an insane amount of coin; either each individual unit should be stronger or the melee ones should be more numerous per upgrade to be able to do something. How are you supposed to mix economy and defense upgrades if you have to spend most of your coin on defense that can't protect your economical buildings? And the worst part, it's not even that the game is insanely difficult, it's just tedious. Because the levels are always the same, you just need to keep testing configurations until you get the one you're looking for. In fact, you can just skip the testing and watch a guide to complete everything first try, but I'd rather not waste my time that way.
