01About Townscaper
Townscaper is an experimental building toy where you place colored house blocks on an irregular grid. Depending on their arrangement, the underlying system turns them into little houses, arches, stairs, bridges, and gardens. There is no set goal or prescribed way to play; the focus is on shaping seaside towns, gardens, or cities on the water. Steam player reviews: 95%% positive from 20,112 reviews. The interface supports Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Greek, Hungarian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Portuguese-Brazil, Romanian, Russian, Spanish-Latin America, Swedish, Turkish, and Ukrainian.

When I was a little boy, maybe five or six years old, I had a toy guitar with buttons for strings. Each press played a difficult-sounding song, letting me pretend that I was the best guitarist in the world... without actually doing anything. Townscaper is that guitar. To get its organic feel, the game relies on a fixed grid of irregular tiles. This means that you are bound to the curvature of the map and that symmetric designs are more or less impossible, unless you are lucky enough to find a section of the grid that is mostly straight. Roofs also put you at the mercy of the algorithm: more often than not, the game will decide that a flat roof looks better than a traditional one and mess up whatever design you had in mind. Townscaper's results are undeniably beautiful, just like my guitar's results were, but both give you so little control over what you're doing that they allow for next to no creativity. This is not a city painter, but a human-aided procedural generator. If that's what you're looking for, go ahead and knock yourself out--you'll love it. But if, like me, you are expecting to lay out intricately designed cities, this will be a huge disappointment.Show moreShow less

it's not bad, but it's not great and it's missing a LOT of simple content and features that are NOT available as seen in the video. it has potential, but there's no guarantee that anything of use will make it into an updated version. what i'd like to see: - save/load file (not the current ghetto save to clipboard and that's the most confusing part, since it seems to autosave when you do a new map, but you can only access them when doing a new map.... WTF) - paint (right now you have to SINGLE CLICK EVERY SINGLE SECTION! there's no hold/drag to lay down a strip or quick draw) - color fill (if you want to change a building color, you have to delete the whole thing and replace it all) - walls (not everything needs to be a house) - ramps/elevation (elevation blocks and ramps to accommodate would be a big improvement to variety) - land (right now you can only make an island. it's great if you want to recreate part of greece or a scene from mama mia) - random generation ( not necessary, but would be a big plus)Show moreShow less

I loved the game ever since the developer presented it on Twitter. Unfortunately, the videos show a much faster control experience than the game really has. You click to place a tile, but if you hold like you would do when you paint with a brush, the camera rotates. The game features neither control tutorial nor preferences to make it a fluid experience like the trailers demonstrate. Neither shift nor ctrl nor alt keys work to modify the tile brush's behavior. "Painting" a city cannot be fun this way - so for now, I cannot recommend.Show moreShow less
I discovered Townscaper on sale for about $6USD while loading up Steam to unwind after an emotional funeral. Three hours after my impulse purchase, I am feeling relaxed and at peace in a way that even medicinal aid has not managed to produce in two weeks. No goals. No conflict. No plans. The results can be as simple of complicated as you wish, and there's no learning curve at all. Just simple controls to create simple, beautifully-rendered structures and allow an over-burdened mind to finally relax. I cannot stop yawning or smiling, and I certainly was not expecting to find such a feeling of serenity at the end of such a day. To everyone involved in creating this delightful little program: thank you.Show moreShow less
Bought it on sale knowing it was just a townbuilder... but it's not even that really. It's a random house spawner. You click and a house appears. You get no say in the grid shape that you can place things on, no say in the style of architecture or anything. You just keep clicking and houses spring up. I wouldn't even use this to generate a D&D map. I've requested a refund. There should be so many more options in something like this. I can't understand why it's been so positively reviewed.Show moreShow less
I've never played something that so forcefully hijacked my cerebellum. Millions of years of evolution disappeared as soon as I left clicked on the side of a quaint European style building. After a few minutes of playing, I found myself a creature with the sole purpose to MAKE BLOCK GO BWING AND SPLISH AND BUILD MORE YES. And then discovering that different block placements meant different structures? The noises I made upon the joy of discovery could not be described as human. I transcended time, space, and species. 10/10, would recommend to anyone who wishes to regress into a state not unlike our tetrapod fish ancestors flopping onto land from the sea.Show moreShow less
Although I enjoy this game, I can't say I'd leave a positive review for one big reason: it's unfinished, and it likely never will be. The game was in early access, missing tons of necessary features like a click-and-drag tool, and the developer had made it quite clear that he did not have the time nor the patience to continue working on the game. Instead of building it up slowly, which I wouldn't have minded at all, he instead just calls the game done and removes it from early access without a single change. All we get from him now are "community showcases", with no signs of future updates ever coming to the game. So, all the bugs you see? They're here to stay. New features? Don't expect them. Man made his money and doesn't really care anymore. This is not the experience I expected, and essentially calling the game "finished" when it's the same from early access is a scummy thing to do.Show moreShow less
