35€ for an early access game about Trams in Vienna? Is it too expensive? As of now, yes Should you buy it? Kinda, yes. BUT... Cons: Early Access, and it really shows Random game breaking bugs happen No/little variety in lines, vehicles, passengers Not fully interactive cockpit Needs physics/damage model Needs more passengers, campaigns, more substance in everything. Pros: This is how Vienna looks, for real Beautiful textures on the buildings, cars, the one tram you can drive Original sound samples 3D models of the city look authentic Huge potential when adding features, with the main focus being as authentic as possible. This game is sold at a premium price for simulators. So: Please please pleaseeeee add frequent updates! Suggested features: More Trams (Different historical ones as well as new ones) Day and Night cycles Campaigns centered around Viennese events: Advent market, Sports game, Protests, New years eve Coop Campaign (Driver, ticket controller), VS mode (who get's more points) Added Cities (Graz, Linz,...) Adding events (Recall to garage/repair station, accidents, calling Police, calling headquarters, distracting and/or aggressive passengers, changing drivers) I might be biased, so take this with a grain of salt. If you have a "fetish" for Austrian public transport (and specifically Trams), this is as pretty as it can get as of now. (Suck it, Fernbus Simulator!) Until they add more features, I suggest getting it on sale or be prepared to get disappointed.Show moreShow less
This game in a nutshell (as of 8. April 2021): 2 vehicles, 1 (one!) route, of which you'll see a decent portion in the tutorial. The rest of the content can be explored in around an hour. The simulation is basic at best. The average player will have mastered the first vehicle in the one hour it takes to trundle down the line. Then, you're done. Nothing more to see here. Except for weird, gamified challenge modes. Or maybe, setting the weather and time of day changes the game significantly. Hint: It does not. A couple years ago this would've been called a demo, and be made available for free to drum up interest for the full release. Today, publishers seem to be fine asking 35€ (or the equivalent in other currencies) for it. As a reminder, this is marked as a full, released game. Not Early Access, or anything. And if you watch the Dev Updates, it seems that any substantial content additions (missing parts of the Vienna tram network, depots, vehicles and the like) will be in the form of DLC, and of course, those will cost extra. Are. You. Serious? So, make up your own mind on whether you want to support such practices. On my part, it never felt so good to press the 'refund' button. For my part, I'll avoid products from both the Publisher and the Developer from now on.Show moreShow less
I never got a rail / tram game to be as close to reality as this one in term of simulation and graphics / physics. As I got an opportunity in my life to be a tram driver for a little while and spend plenty of time in tram and metro cab, I can tell you the comparison to real thing as it is supposed to be a simulator. IT IS ! It's a perfect replica of tram operations en route. Route is a 50 minutes drive one way. Route is really diversified, hills, underground, on the road, on tram proper route etc .... Route finish in loop on both ends. Timetable mode / Open World mode (without timetable) / Challenges mode / Video Tutorial in the beginning. Timetable have something like 10 duties with plenty of services to choose from depeding on choosed time, ability to change time in-game, day / night modelled. No weather yet. Graphics are really 2020 and all buildings are greatly modelled and qre unique, no recycled assets, all seems proper. Tram itself is properly modelled, there are annoucements, platform displays, almost all of tram controls are clickable and operational. It feels like a REAL thing, especially passengers boarding and doors operations. There is simulated individual doors opening, closing photosensors aka "hot door button" and manual force to close, or force opened etc while "beeping" as a real thing. It seems really complete. Tram physics are great, feeling the hill / downslope and reacts like a real thing. Sounds are perfect and very immersive. Few folks here make me laugh as they state that there is nothing to do beside of driving a tram, well, it's the purpose of it :) There is plenty of negative comments due to not really thorough manual and lack of explanation of few features and casual gamers take it as a bug where it actually isn't, like "I'm unable to proceed as the doors doesn't close" while they use "hot button" instead of forced close (as a passenger standing too close to the doors are fully simulated). True, that there is some bugs, especially menu, settings, tricky in-game (while driving) menu on top screen edge to be clicked with left mouse button, non intuitive and sometimes not really responsive, to choose timetable service, change in-game time etc, some "flying" or crazy passengers (running 30 km/h), but beside of few hickups on fps in densely modelled area in the center where fps drops a bit and a few glitches there is no game breaking bugs. Yet such a passengers simulation, different patch taken by them, non schematic movements, unexpected stuff, PERFECTLY modelled signals and aspects, fighting with timetable while driving properly or cars trying sometimes to push through and cut you then braking being scared (they continue when you stop) is FANTASTIC. A rare features that are not really common and few guys takes that as a bug. But beside of few menu and in-game glitches it is a really good product for Public Transport Maniacs :) And it is still in developpement and plenty of goodies will come.Show moreShow less
I like the idea of this game and I wanted to like it. However, there is almost nothing to do. Just timetabled service (1 route, 50 min length) and some tram challenges (like stop in the correct place of the station). If this game had more routes (possibly shorter length and/or maps then it would be good and I would compare it to something like Omsi 2. Right now though, this game is pretty boring with no real objectives.Show moreShow less
This is a loooooooooooooooooooong and only lightly edited review, and I plan on updating it when big things change. TLDR at the bottom. Tutorials - Very detailed while also concise enough to be useful. NO SUBTITLES ON THE TUTORIAL VIDEOS! Also, there is no way to skip them. Covid mode - Nice touch from the devs, very very few games have anything similar Spell check - The English is okay, but could use a little bit of a touch-up ("graphic" instead of "graphics", "mouse invertation", "limit fps" when given multiple options, etc) Some warnings given while in sim (collisions, etc) are not in English, although that should just be considered that a bug for now. There is no true third person camera, only cameras attached to the corners of the train - there is however, a free cam. Your head clips through the seat in the default interior camera view, and your view rotation is limited to 270 degrees. While realistic in some senses, annoying in others. Especially when looking backwards, which you might do a fair amount. It isn't possible to change your controls once you are in the sim, very annoying as 90% of the time you need to be able to test that your controls are working. This has been changed, its possible to edit the controls while in-game now. No way to enable/disable controllers interacting with the sim without unplugging them, very annoying for people who use a wheel often. That being said, the default control scheme seems to be very well laid out, and the ability to control the tram with the keyboard is a seamless experience. You can get up and walk around, which is an absolute bonus to any sim game, even if pointless in most. Unlike games such as OMSI and other simulators with mouse controls, hovering your mouse over a button does not tell you what that button is/does. considering most of the buttons are not in English, you must know fully about the trams, or know German to fully utilize the simulator. That being said-the full tram is simulated very, very well, 90% of the buttons are clickable and do functions. Audio - this sounds better than 95% of simulators I know! There are surely going to be bugs and minor issues here and there considering the game was just released at the time of this review, but nevertheless it sounds very good. there is no chatter going on inside the tram, but i suppose it isn't easy to pack many hours of chatter into a game, high quality, AND keep the file sizes down (though this game ALREADY comes in at a whopping 14.4 GB!) The doppler effect is incredible, and the sound entering/exiting the tunnels seems nearly perfect to my ears. YOU CANT OPEN THE WINDOWS OF THE DRIVERS CAB! Open-able, sometimes squeaky windows are a must in any sim. I don't know of anyone who would disagree. The AI - its okay! it doesn't seem like its totally on rails, the movement is generally smooth, and occasionally they will even cut you off, in a realistic manner by slamming on the brakes as they freak out while you come towards them. They seem to know when to wait while you're approaching, and seem to know the general road rules. There's a fairly realistic amount of traffic, and you'll have other streetcars/trams in the area aswell, and all over the place. In front of you, behind you, and going the opposite direction. HOWEVER - There are absolutely NO trucks or large vehicles of any kind, nor are there police cars, ambulances, fire trucks, etc. It would be nice to see these added in the future. There's also an OKAY number of AI vehicles, though I seriously hope the number will increase in the future, as it gets a little repetitive. Related to the AI - The traffic signals are exactly as they should be! as far as pedestrians go - they walk, and don't look like they've pooped themselves. not in a single file line, and at different speeds even. Not much more to be expected of them. Overall physics - The streetcar shakes around as it should going along the track and especially when going across junctions/points, the tram doesn't accelerate or brake like a fly (though the emergency brake seems a bit excessive), and the streetcar overall feels realistically weighty. It will accelerate or decelerate on slopes in a very realistic fashion as well. No, it is not possible to derail or flip the tram, but its a simulator anyways. Visuals - The game looks very good, as does almost every new game. Its on a similar level to train sim world, though i feel more attention to detail has gone into this game. There are minor issues (such as pedestrians not animating when you're looking in the digital mirrors, but only 50% of the time) however, only very minor. I do think the game needs a bit of optimization, in the visual department though, my PC is just below recommended spec (GPU only has 6GB of VRAM rather than 8GB and while 80% of the time I was getting consistently acceptable fps, the other 20% it would drop to 20 fps or less. Currently, there is no weather but there is a day/night cycle. Hopefully there will be weather in the future. GUI/HUD - There practically isn't one once you are driving, HOWEVER everything you need to know is very clear and obvious, so I feel it isn't very neseccary at this stage in the game, with the content we currently have. Also, Nvidia Ansel support, awesome. Challenges - There are multiple challenges, as well as a "hotseat" mode for multiple players so you can play with friends locally, one at a time. The challenges are as follows: Door stop - Stop your tram as close as possible to the mark, the furthest distance from the mark loses. Speed limit - Accelerate to a specified speed without using the tachometer. Perfect stop - Similar to the door stop challenge, stop the tram as close as possible to the red line. Content: CURRENTLY, only one tram and one environment. It seems to be their plan to make it possible to mod the game easier, and the community will get tools that will allow them to possibly even get their content officially added into the game. Multiplayer - No, I don't think this game would have much use for multiplayer anyways though. unlike actual trains where there are multiple roles for the crew and almost never just a driver, trams are generally a one-person operation. Overall - I think its a very good game so far! A bit pricey, but I think its totally worth it if you want a serious tram simulator, especially if they release a pretty reasonable amount of content for free (or very cheap), and don't adopt cash-grab tactics like other companies. (cough DTG cough) I think other reviewers are not looking at this in the right view, as they are only looking at the big picture. TLDR; Buy it if you want a tram sim, don't if you don't. I have hope for this game, and intend to keep it - hopefully this turns a good page for the developer and company to not make this a moneygrab that they will abandon after a year. Well, let us start off where this sim beats all other sims; in extorting the player. Even beating the notorious DTG, where somehow even TSW, TSW 2 and TS2021 end up being better value, who would of thought. That aside here are all the problems with the sim. 1.) 36 quid for one 50 min route, with no depot, is absolute extortion. Typical of Viewapp bare minimum gameplay, and maximum consumer exploitation. This game is reminiscent of Vienna 1 and 2 addons for Omsi 2, the most overpriced and underdeveloped. For goodness sake, they could not even be bothered to implement a Tram Depot but added useless challenges. Is this a Sim or a Game? Mark my words, the next Map for this game will be Vienna 2 by the same devs, be separate from current map and cost 30 quid. Btw, Dev apparently confirmed some updates be part of a payware update, what a surprise. 2.) Literally the most expensive sim on the market in terms of gameplay; even the Youtubers that got free keys for the game can not recommend the game at the price. No wonder Tramsim sold out on grey market resellers. Metro Sim 25 quid, Omsi 2 30 quid, TSW/TSW 2/ TS2021 30 quid, ETS 2 20 quid. Tramsim 36 quid and offers the least out of all games. 3.) Somehow minimum requirements of this game are above those of MFS 2020, devs did not bother to optimise or even have beta testers on lower spec machines, many say min requirements overstated. Which I can confirm runs fine on 2gb vram GTX 1050. Sure, there are some positives graphics are good, sounds are realistic, and map is accurate. But 36 quid is unreasonable for this game. Bottom line game is worth half the price and hence why one will notice that third party sellers are out of stock. If devs had not been so greedy, they could have made the same or higher revenue, while not gaining negative reviews for underwhelming features at the price point. As many went to third party sellers and thus lost revenue to devs and Aerosoft. Bare in mind this sim has more product placement than any other sim, and they still want 36 quid! Full of branded cars, clothes and goods. Bottom line, not worth 36 quid. Future of game will be determined by modding, if freeware addons are released and payware addons are not extortionate then this game has potential, but it is a shame price, optimisation, and quality of humans in game was overlooked for product placement and pointless tram challenges that make this more of a game than sim (again bare minimum, easier to chuck in some challenges than actually useful features like a depot).Show moreShow less
Experienced on the Oculus Quest 2. VR REVIEW ONLY. You can view my review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/IxkcteVpTJ4 This is a neutral recommendation. I had lots of fun playing this game. The cabin of the tram and Vienna looks amazing. It's very relaxing to go along the routes across the city and pick up and drop off passengers. Unfortunately, the main reason I cannot recommend this game is because of poor optimization for VR. Game is running on the Unreal Engine. On my RTX 3080, I was getting variable frame rate drops and stutters. It would run at 90, 60, 45, 20 frames per second just depending on which section of the city I was at. The stutters that would happen around parliament made the game almost unplayable and definitely uncomfortable to play. I had to quit. It also seems like the longer I played the game, the poorer the performance. There's also other issues with VR. Although the store page says for VR that KBM or gamepad are required, that is not true (at least not on the Oculus Quest 2). The Touch controllers work fine. You can interact with most buttons / levers on the cabin. However, all is not well. For the acceleration / deceleration you use the joystick on the Touch controller versus holding the joystick in-game via motion controls. That part is bugged as well as the joystick will move on its own without any input from you. It becomes annoying to hear the constant clicking sound. Also the game tells you to press V for VR, but that is not necessary, it starts on its own on the Oculus quest if you choose Steam VR to start. Beware though, if you have a gamepad plugged in, the game may not recognize your Touch controllers button presses or joystick movement. Also, all the dashboard controls on the cabin are in German. Lastly, you have to start in non-VR to start a new game. You cannot control any of the menu items from VR. It seems like VR is an afterthought for this game. That's a shame because VR support is the only reason I bought this game. Given the poor implementation, I would recommend waiting for an update before purchasing this game for the VR experience. I do kind of regret my purchase, but it was also a lot of fun and I can see it being really good in VR if the developers put time to make it a more pleasant experience for VR. Rate 5/10. A game with great potential but at the time of this writing absolutely not worth full price yet. With only one route the choices are limited to say the least. And with lots of bugs. Although bugs are actively patched, there are still plenty left. Also a manual is completely missing. The tutorial videos don't make up for that. So until most bugs are resolved and more routes are available I'd wait before buying this game.Show moreShow less
I can understand why other people think it's a rip off as you only get 1 route and 1 tram, but personally I can excuse the developers, as Vienna is modelled with a really impressive level of attention to detail, as is the tram itself. Low value seems to be the value of low volume, niche games... Hopefully, the developers create some more cities and don't charge a further €35 for each.Show moreShow less
was okay until they abandoned the game, i dont want to buy anything from these absolute scammers anymoreShow moreShow less
