Overall, Trine 4 is a fantastic, beautiful and extremely enjoyable game to play. Originality may not have been high up on the list of priorities by the time this fourth outing rolled around but everything, from the sumptuous visuals to the audio, everything is tip top. For people who have played previous Trine titles, this one may be the best one yet. It’s a remarkably solid side scrolling title and what seems to be a welcome change from the ill-fated Trine 3. I didn’t honestly think Trine 4 would enrapture me as much as it has, particularly when tackling the multiplayer. If you’ve played and enjoyed and title in the Trine franchise before, you’re very likely to love this one, so grab a few friends and enjoy.Show moreShow less
Such a massive downgrade from Trine 1 and 2. Zoya can only grapple to fixed points. Amadeus can only conjure predetermined sized objets, and may only rotate at specific angles. Visually it's stunning as always, but gameplay-wise it feels super gimped, all for the sake of making it gamepad-accessible.Show moreShow less
Trine 2 is in my top 5 games list and I am so pleased to be able to say that this latest installment is an absolute joy to play and definitely up there with its predecessor! The return to 2.5D was one of the best things Frozen Byte could have done after the debacle that was Trine 3. I have not experienced any issues whatsoever with camera angles, character gameplay orientation or any other of those weird glitchy effects. The puzzles are fun and done in typical Trine fashion, some more straightforward than others with most having several solution methods meaning you aren't always forced into only playing one or other character to progress. The skill acquisition and abilities are paced well with both story and difficulty progression and combat can be challenging but not overly so. Those I played with had issues with their saved games not saving their collections and skill point allocations but as the host it seemed I was spared that frustration. If you're a fan of adventure/exploration, puzzles and RPG's you're sure to love this, best money I have spent on entertainment in an extremely long time! Thank you everyone at Frozen Byte for providing us with another gem, once again showing the industry that it doesn't have to be about size provided you know how to use it.Show moreShow less
To be blunt, I can't recommend this game while Trine 2 is still in existence. With a great game, you can be 40 hours in and it feels like 4. "Where did the time go?"After four hours I could have sworn that I had been playing for twenty. The music is sleepy. The new puzzle additions often feel more tedious than inspired. The enemies are bland spectral goons with no discernible personality traits or fun quirks. The 18 or so levels all feel needlessly stretched out (and for a game that is probably going to take you 10 to 12 hours if you are going out of your way to collect every little bauble and trinket, that's saying something). It's just... hollow compared to Trine 2. Also, yeah... I'll say it. This game drank too deeply from the woke fountain for my tastes. The goblins in Trine 2 were fun, trash-talking toughs with cockney accents. But... we can't have races defined by evil. That'd be too triggering and might encourage negative stereotyping... so just a whole game of voiceless spectral dullards to fight. There you go. Zoya was a fun thief archetype with a Roma-gypsy kind of veil and just a hint of manipulative sensuality about her. Kind of like Catwoman meets Hawkeye after stealing Batman's grapple-hook. Now... her veil is gone, she has a gormless smile on her face, and any hint of femme-fatale has been stripped away. She's Susy McGrapple now with a vaguely ethnic tan. There you go. The story goes nowhere and the big bad is an effeminate prince who you mindlessly chase after for the whole game. It's safe, non-triggering, and BORING. The only source of amusement I had was guessing which cliche might come next. "Oh, a sexy mermaid voice... bet she's going to be overweight or plain." *cue the overweight body-positive mermaid* "Oh, her brother's voice.... bet he's going to be gay." *cue a dryad dude in the most gaudy, single-strapped, rose pedal prom gown you could imagine* As of the time of this review, I am almost done beating this game. I have a few levels left, and it's a slog to force myself to finish it. I'd rather watch paint dry, but I have beaten the previous three games and even own the spin-off Nine Parchments. I'm going to force myself through out of a misguided sense of obligation, but I can't in good faith recommend this game to anyone. If you really want to play Trine, play Trine 2. It's 2.5D perfection and a master class in doing a heck of a lot with relatively very little. If there is never another Trine, I'd be okay with that. This burned me out.Show moreShow less
After a minor flop with Trine 3, the team at Frozenbyte have proved once again, they know their craft well, this time without much unnecessary experimentation. What will strike you first is the developers' high standard of creating a fantasy, fairy-tale world of great visual quality. The world is filled with wondrous creatures and is teeming with rich flora. The environments are adequately varied. Characters' models and facial animations could have been more elaborate, but it's still wonderful, considering it's an indie production. Puzzle design and character progression are the best in the series and it will keep your grey matter pretty busy throughout the game's 15-18 hours game time. The game frequently introduces new mechanics and means to solve problems by unlocking many character traits and skills. What I didn't like that much was the story. Chasing a wayward prince that has little to no interest in solving his problems gets tiresome after a while. The trio of heroes may come off as a little naïve in pursuing this quest. I also did not enjoy fighting the various nightmarish wolves and goatman archers, serving no other purpose than to slow down the player with petty challenge and provide relief from the never-ending puzzle-solving. Fighting goblins and skellingtons in the previous games proved much more satisfactory and difficult. The whole game is much more than satisfactory though. It's not much of an evolution but rather a return to the roots, that made the series so strong, successful, and enjoyable for people of all ages. + return of the classic, colorful world, rich and challenging puzzles, polished - trite story, annoying fighting arenas 7.5/10 https://steamcommunity.com/id/globster/stats/690640/achievements/ 39 of 39Show moreShow less
I really want to like this game, its very similar to Trine 2 and what I did play was enjoyable. However after 11 hours of gameplay, my save file vanished. Apparently this has happened to others, I tried various fixes to no avail. Started over and played another 5 hours to get back to near where I was. The game deleted my save file again. Seems like these bugs should be ironed out after all this time. Very frustrating. Don't buy unless you want to risk playing the same levels at least 3 times over.Show moreShow less
Trine 4 goes back to using a 2.5D presentation, but various elements got changed up. For one thing the physics system isn't like in the first 2 games, as the devs have utilized some elements from the 3rd game such as Amadeus being able to create boxes with the press of a key (you can still create it using mouse) as well as Zoya's rope mechanics from Trine 3, to name a few. Furthermore, puzzles can be solved utilizing all 3 characters and are not reliant solely on Amadeus. This I feel is one of the better improvements in this game. I cannot remember many puzzles from the first 2 games at least that needed me to rely on the other two to solve, but this time even with Amadeus being needed to move objects around, Zoya and/or Pontius will be needed to clear certain puzzle or platforming sections. The combat in the game is similar to the first 2, while Pontius is the go to fellow here, Amadeus has been given better combat options allowing him to slam objects onto enemies as well. I played with Easy combat difficulty but there can be some tricky parts in normal encounters. The game also has around 5 or so bosses and they incorporate some puzzle-y elements as well though they weren't too frustrating, relying on the player to remember patterns in order to defeat them. The Music and Visuals are on point as well in this game; ever since Trine 2, Frozenbyte have been creating lovely looking worlds to explore in the series (the dozens of amateur screenshots I took are one testament to that) and this game is no exception, moreso if you are able to downsample or apply alternative AA to the game. The game's music is calm and relaxing, which contemplates the puzzle solving to not make you stress out much on them. I know it's not much to say, but if you liked the music from the earlier games, you're bound to like them here. The game has as many stages as the first game (around 18 or so) interestingly enough, and can still be played co-op of course, allowing up to 4 players being able to switch to any of the 3 heroes. All in all this is a solid and worthy entry in the Trine series. I personally like Trine 3, but understand the criticisms the game suffers from, so if that game disappointed you, I think Trine 4 will win you back.Show moreShow less
Trine 4: The Nightmare prince The puzzles are generally okay, but there are some nuances. The game feels stretched out,a round 10 hours of similar puzzles start to get tedious towards the end. Previous chapters of Trine, seemed shorter, and that worked in their favor. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3238673151 The combat was also not very pleasing, with too simple enemy clicking which could have been bearable for a few hours but not for more than 10 hours. In games like this, there's not much point in focusing on the plot; here, it simply exists. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3237886824 Additionally, the final boss on hard difficulty was a bit suffocating. The game turned out to be decent in its genre, but due to its length, it required effort to push oneself to finish it.Show moreShow less
