The first five hours are genuinely incredible. Sets up so many interesting plot threads, introduces lots of compelling characters, and the minigames bring the setting to life. And then the game meanders for another 15 hours. Most plot threads that are set up in those first five hours end up on the backburner. The dynamic presentation from the beginning fades away until all you're left with is straight story segments, a godawful rhythm game, and admittedly excellent texting segments. By the end, half the cast is irrelevant. And for some reason, it doubles down on that sci-fi thing where the answer is always quantum-something. Yes, I did play the whole thing. I did continue after the fake-out. And I still can't help but feel it goes nowhere.Show moreShow less
If you're someone who's struggling to forgive yourself for "wasting" years of your life AKA not following your passions earlier, because of depression, abuse or any reason, you need to play this game.Show moreShow less
I usually write my reviews in my mother tongue, but as the reviews are overwhelmingly positive, and I was overwhelmingly disappointed, I'll make an exception. I wanted to love this game so much, and yet... some people called it their GOTY, well, it's my disappointment of the year. It's not the first time people are overselling a game in the reviews, and that's another disappointment. From now on, I'll mostly check detailed negative reviews, because it seems to be where the truth is now. Anyway, I'll keep my review spoiler free, so rest assured friend, stay a while and listen. First of all, the game is not complete garbage. The beginning is very good, I was invested in the characters and the story, I found the writing to be good, laughed a lot and got emotionnal. It also looks good, though having 2D assets in a 3D engine sometimes looks really weird. But the artstyle is good. Music is too. But then, problems starts to appear. Which is probably a problem of pacing, like, oh my god this game is soooo slow, and trust me when I say it's slow. This is the first game where I've been on my phone at the same time because it increasingly became more and more boring. Which is ironic, considering, well, they're teens on their phones all the time, and so am I. I had to push myself to play it around the 10-12 hour mark (for a game that is around 25 hours long), expecting some grande finale that would make it worth it. And it's not that this is not my kind of game, I've enjoyed a lot of narrative games and VN. It's just that you can't do anything. No side content, nothing to explore, choices don't matter and I mean like not at all, it changes at best one or two lines of dialog. So basically you just keep pressing A/space for hours while reading a pretty book. And it's also not because it's teenager stuff, even if I'm in my 30's, I actually enjoy teenage slice of life, coming of age story, with pretty music and bittersweet mood. I mean Life is Strange and Night in the woods are among my favorite games of all time. Anyway, beside being slow, the main problem to me is that its inspirations are very clear, but the ambitions are clearly not met, so you can't help but compare Until Then to its models, and it's not in Until Then favor. It's actually so obvious it's almost painful. So basically, take Life is Strange, To The Moon, Your Name (the anime movie), shake it, and voilà (though there are a lot of others inspirations, both in games, movies and shows). But make it way longer, and way less impactful. For reals, To The Moon and Your Name tell a better (and in a way, similar) story and leave a bigger impact in only a fraction of the time. Honestly, it's hard to speak about a game that is mid, because there isn't much to tell : there is nothing abysmal, but nothing great either. I can only say that they wanted to make something big and very ambitious, but it falls flat, especially near the end. It's not helped by having bullsh*t quantum physics thrown around, I sighed at pretty much any BIG SMART MOMENT with Louise. It's obvious the devs saw a Youtube video on that topic and called it a day, because with only basic understanding of physics, I could tell straight away that it didn't make any sense. And it doesn't even needs to be there. Stop trying to do scientifically accurate Sci-Fi, especially with high school teenagers, it's useless at best and cringe at worst. That, and all of the post-apocalyptic setting which teases something big and interesting for the whole game, and then barely scratches the surface and make any use of it. Oh and FFS we need to get rid of that trope of playing a game multiple times to tell the story. Unless you can top Nier Automata, which I highly doubt, it's becoming cliche and dull. And especially there, where it's very slow and there is no gameplay (and a lot of similar stuff is happening). So what more can I say ? There are a few nitpicks that can be adressed here and there, regarding controller support for instance. Or the minigames that can be improved, especially the musical ones (don't even try to play piano with a controller). Or the background music : like, why play background music (WITH PIANO) when characters are playing piano ? But fixing this won't fix the story nor the pacing. I'll quote another review that summed it up perfectly : sure I cried when I was supposed to cry, and laughed when I was supposed to laugh. But this isn't a story I'll still think about in a year, which is what it seemingly tries to be. You might enjoy this game though, if you're young and haven't played/watched much, and you're really into visual novels and can be ok with having ABSOLUTELY no gameplay or player agenda for 99% of the game. But be aware that you might get disappointed.Show moreShow less
I have a feeling this is one of those rare hidden gem indie games that will go a bit under the radar despite how good it is until a random guy on youtube makes a viral 1+ hour long breakdown of itShow moreShow less
I was disappointed in this game. I almost dropped it multiple times, but I kept going to see if there was something more given all the stellar reviews. To my surprise, I found the game became less appealing as it went on, peaking early in the experience. One of my biggest gripes with the game is that it doesn't respect the player's time. The enjoyment per unit of playtime from the plot is far lower than many other story-based games I've played. It tends to retread the same things over and over. The game uses a common central trope (won't say for spoilers) that is used far better in other story-based games I've played. 13 Sentinels, for example, blows this game out of the water. The minigame sequences used in the game were also particularly bad. They are not fun, but even worse, there was no thought given to the pacing or learning of the minigames to make them effective in accentuating story points. The best part of this game is the dialogue, which is very natural and well done, particularly among the central cast. The sprite work and character designs are also good, although the close ups of the pixels do not hold up well after playing for a while. The emotional expressions of the characters are also well done. If you've played and liked something like 13 Sentinels which has a lot going on, I recommend skipping this one or getting it on a steep discount. If you're looking for a more chill and slower experience that focuses mostly on character banter and less on interesting plot points however, this game may be for you.Show moreShow less

(very, very light spoilers) I really, really wanted to enjoy this game. My favorite kind of games are interactive visual novel type games (Doki Doki, Danganronpa, Your Turn to Die, etc.) and going into this game, I was expecting something of very similar quality to these games because of the high praise that I had seen. To my pleasure, the demo seemed to give exactly that and more. The first thing you notice going into the game are that the visuals are absolutely stunning; a pleasing mixture between 2D and 3D pixel graphics which is done extremely well. The interaction: waking up Mark with the clock, putting the coins into the subway machine, texting, making the slides with Ryan. It was all amazing. The story up until the end of the demo was very intriguing. So, I bought the full game. The visuals are the only thing about what I mentioned prior that stayed consistent throughout the 20 hours of gameplay. For me, the game began to get very frustrating and boring as I continued playing. The main issue was the pseudoscience (Louise's "experiment") and the explanations of such that accompanied. It was very unconvincing and honestly very cringe worthy to me. The game seemed like it was trying to be somewhat horror/psychedelic, but it failed in the process. I would have MUCH rather the game been a light hearted slice-of-life than be entangled in some "science-y" nonsense which the game became 5 hours in. The attempt to make the story "deep" ruined all of the other aspects that had the potential to work well in the story. Cathy was almost developed fully. Almost. Mark's character seemed to get lost in the action (like, Mark's personality suddenly vanished and we were left with a very basic and uncompelling character). Kate was a pointless addition, Ridel was boring, and Louise needed to do more than just use big words to convince me that she was smart. The Mark and Nicole situation made no sense and was not justified. The final ending was silly. The entire game is basically just a story with very, very minimal gameplay (probably less than 30 minutes, total). I think I pressed my spacebar a total of 1,000,000 times throughout the game (idly, most of the time). I'll stop ranting, but really, the only good aspect of the game was Cathy. I'd've much rather preferred this game without all the multi-universal-willy-nilly and with full developments of the characters. I'm astonished that this game as received such positive feedback. (TLDR; Although visuals are superb, the game was boring with minimal gameplay, the writing was cringey, there is a messy mixture of plots (with a main plot that doesn't make sense) with severely undeveloped characters.)Show moreShow less
