I wanted to wait until I had 100 hours into this game to give it a review. I wanted to have plenty of time put into it with it being an early access title. I've played mainly solo, most games like this I do, just a personal preference until I have beat the game. This game is an early access, the only bug I have ran into is an item tooltip describing what the item is. The game feels completed even though it is not. You can’t say that for a lot of early access games now a days. Let's start off with the Building aspect this game offers. The terraforming can take a little to get used to. You can’t just dig with a pickaxe underneath the layer above, you must take it all the way down. With you not being able to dig a cave, you must dig the whole area out and build in the area if you wanted to build an underground dungeon for example. You unlock building items as you progress through the game, I like this aspect, I suggest waiting until the final tier if you plan to build fancy. While building you must add support, just like in the real world, cool concept. You must be within a certain distance of a workbench, forge, or stonecutter while building. Certain building aspects require a different crafting table. Now let’s talk about combat. Combat in this game can be very challenging if you are under geared. You can’t go from the tier 1 zone and expect to survive in combat in the tier 3 zone. There are creatures that can 1 shot you if you are not prepared. Eat the right food for more health and have the right gear for the zone on! The boss fights I enjoyed in this game. What more can you ask, fighting a deer with chains hanging off his antlers while metal music starts playing? Mobs from one biome will fight others from another! It seems skeletons will fight any mob even if they are from the same biome. It can be a sight to roll up on some greydwarves trying to fight the skeletons It can take time to acquire the materials to craft gear sense you can’t use a teleport with ore. This means you either walk, or travel by boat. Traveling by boat can bring a lot of great views. Watching a storm while in the middle of the ocean, a lightning bolt dancing across the sky. Shortly after being able to watch the clouds dissipating, the stars shining with a purple hue in the sky can be mesmerizing. Some people may not enjoy the graphics of the game, say it looks too old. It’s the perfect art style for this game in my opinion. The physics in this game are amazing. You chop a tree down and it factors in slop, chopping direction and wind into its fall direction. There’s rain and snow fall in the game, which can cause you to become “wet” and “freezing.” Crafting in this game is well done for the most part. In my opinion there is a few recipes that need to be tweaked. You shouldn’t need 20 of iron bars but only a small amount of wood to craft a bow for example. Drop rates for crafting mats seem well placed except of ancient wood, my opinion, it needs to be lowered to same levels as the other “special woods.” You can plant a garden, plant trees, tame animals to have quick access to furs and meat. After many hours of crafting, combat, building, and exploring, a game that is 1gb (Yes 1gb!) has brought me a ton of fun. Reminds me of the first times playing Minecraft or Terraria. I’ve been looking for a game to bring that feeling back. All in all, I highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys these style of games as I do! Please if you enjoyed reading this or found it inciteful upgrade this review! I’ll see you in Valheim! I just want to say thanks for all the awesome feedback of my review.. sorry I live in Texas and have been without power for 3 1/2 days. You guys are awesome.. thank you so much for reading!Show moreShow less
EPILEPSY WARNING I'm bummed to write this review, as this type of game is my jam. I'm an avid gamer with epilepsy. I have very rarely found a game that triggers a seizure. Unfortunately, the lighting and rain effects in this game very quickly caused an episode. Without any accessibility options, I had to get a refund. That said, the game looks great. My friends are having fun with the game and playing on a server, so I can't say the game is bad nor blame the devs for my inability to play it.Show moreShow less
It got a crafting/boss progression similar to Terraria. It has Dark Souls-like combat and punishment for death. It got world/biome generation similar to Minecraft. It got textures like a PS1 game. It got lighting like a 2020 AAA game. It sounds weird, but it's absolutely fantastic!Show moreShow less
12/14/2022 - Update Game is still bad, the mistlands update is a joke, its just fog, shear rocks, you cant see anything, the mobs are difficult for no reason, the new weapons are just as terrible as you'd expect. Now you are wet, cold, and blind. What is good: The game does not hold your hand. You must explore and figure out pretty much everything on your own with little direction. This is a great change from the norm. Having to unlock recipes by finding new drops/resources The simplistic graphics yet beautiful environments Exploring and finding random encounters Mob factions fight each other instead of being all allied. Sailing, sailing in storms specifically, is extremely satisfying. Random events near your bases (Granted they aren't a real threat and could use improvement) What is not good: The world is huge, but the game takes no advantage of this. There is no real diversity of biomes as you progress further out from the center of the world. The game would have been more enjoyable and given you more reason to explore if there was some need to sail the seas and expand to new islands but there is really no need to go to more than 2 islands to beat the game. I really only saw the plains biome taking advantage of this by having a "Birch" forest occasionally. All of the other biomes pretty much are the same throughout. (You are wet, you are cold) The weapons and combat system was neat at first but you quickly realize most things are pointless in the game. Two handed weapons do not really provide much damage benefit compared to the stamina usage, there is not separation of player earn skilled between one handed and two handed weapons. The unique middle mouse attacks animations are so slow most enemies will move out of the way before the animation is complete. (You are wet, you are cold) The game starts out great with difficulty and progression up until you get to iron age. Iron, Silver, and Black Metal are vastly easier to obtain in bulk compared to the complexity of copper/tin to bronze. I was sad to see the game become significantly easier in equipment progression so quickly. Why can't I use charcoal in fires? (You are wet, you are cold) The upgraded blast furnace was a huge disappointment, you can't even smelt old ores in it. We were really hoping the new furnace would make smelting lower tier ores easier. Gear progression does not utilize previous tier items making them worthless. I was hoping to see more difficulty to craft higher and higher tier weapons to give you a purpose to grind/adventure. The last three bosses are easier than the 2nd boss. Their mechanics are easy to cheese. The Merchant Have fun trying to find him, there is only 1 in your world. We didn't even find ours until we completed the 4th boss. (You are wet, you are cold) Teleports should only allow you to take crafted items through. It makes it too easy to progress and makes boats and carts pretty pointless. (You are wet, you are cold) You can cheese the AI attacks by simply digging a moat around your base. No fishing, cooking, or cultivating skill? (You are wet, you are cold) Skill progression slows way down from 50-100, but you lose it so fast when you die, this is a good thing. The problem being that skill upgrades really don't feel like they do anything for you other than the weapon skills. I never feel like I can run further, swim farther, block better, etc. (You are wet, you are cold) You are wet, you are cold, you have no stamina Crafting food is extremely boring and time consuming. Some foods give x4, some don't. The whole food ui and indicator color icons is incredibly confusing for new players and makes little to no sense. Often your HP and Stamina is not even what it should be before the food buffs run out. (You are wet, you are cold) What is the point of sneak, why would you ever need this? All these coins and nothing else to buy. The merchant system feels rushed and extremely lacking/underwhelming. You cannot cancel animations (IE stop attack to block or roll, don't accidentlly sit while an enemy is attacking you) Summary (TLDR) The game was enjoyable for me, but I feel like a lot of people will struggle playing this game in its current state. This game is not meant for the casual player as it does not hold your hand, which was a welcoming change. The tier progression of the game starts out well but then progresses very quickly post bronze age. Weapons are not balanced and you'll end up sticking with a few (bow, 1 hand mace, spin to win). Uniqueness of the biomes tapers off quickly and the necessity to visit other islands to gather resources is absent. You can definitely have fun in this game due to its unique challenges and exploration, but that feeling of enjoyment quickly falls off with tedium and ever quickening progression to boss encounters that are way to easy. What I would like to see in the future: More in depth skill system (IE: getting to 50 points in a specific weapon unlocks your special attack, every 20 points of block will reduce your stamina usage or increase your block amount, etc) Addition of more skills to level and perks that go with them (Fishing, Cooking, Cultivating, Gathering, Exploring) More potions that give buffs instead of instant stamina/hp Improved sneak mechanics and purpose, why do we need to sneak ever? More use of previous tier items in the progression, albeit less of it to make higher tier weapons. There really isn't much point of going back to previous biomes other than to get core/find wood. More Diverse sub biomes. Give us a reason to explore. I shouldn't be able to find the same copy paste biome on each island. A Meadows with a huge oak orchard, A Snow biome that isn't on the mountains. The plains biome does this with its "sub biome with the birch trees). A point for trophies. Perhaps incorporate them into unique gear styles, or needed for "unique weapons". Or even give them a sell value so you can sell them to the merchant. More restrictions on the use of teleporting. It makes the game to easy. I'd rather not be able to take any base crafting ingredient through the portals personally. Improved animations on weapon swings (being stuck in one direction during the animation) and the ability to cancel an action to change it.Show moreShow less
It's criminal that a team of 5 people can build such an amazing game like this and sell it for $20. I continue to be amazed at the thought that went into this game and all the little details. From the changing weather, the waves in the ocean, the ebb and flow of the water along shorelines, the smoke from the campfire as it fills the room, the ease and simplicity when it comes to building, the way the trees fall, the music that feels seamless and relaxing, and so on. I truly appreciate that they didn't make an "open world simulation that simulates things for no other reason than to simulate them". Made a mistake while building that house? No worries, just remove it and get all your materials back. Ran out of food while busy building or crafting? No worries, you're not going to die from hunger. Broke your axe? No worries, just repair it. Troll smashed your cart full of ore? No worries, just put down a workbench and rebuild the cart and put everything back in the cart.Show moreShow less
Its a great game - 4 years ago. The game had only a few biomes left to finish off the game, everyone was happy and pumping lots of hours into the game. It was exciting to explore the world, base-building is complex enough to allow for interesting buildings, etc. Then the devs went into hibernation - super slow updates with minimal content: "Hey, look a new hut". It has been 5 years by now and this little gem is still not finished. They are developing board games, plush toys, etc - finish the game? Not so much.. What a pity.. /edited for spelling..Show moreShow less
i'm a 63 year old gamer. Been playing since 1977 when the Atari 2600 came out with "Pong" as the big thing. I have primarily enjoyed open-world exploration games, like Oblivion, Skyrim, and Fallout4, which I have played many hours on. I have already done 555 hours on Valheim, which has some the most amazingly beautiful, realistic, not to mention dangerous biomes I have ever seen, despite the low detail. The different climate effects mixed with the lightling and weather are superb, And the sound effects are so realistic, especially the lightning and thunder storms. The crafting and settlement building along with you picking where you're going to settle is so great! Definitely one of the best games I have ever played!Show moreShow less
After 3000+ hours of this game... I cannot recommend it. I know it is Early Access but several changes they have made and the new Ashlands Biome has me question their direction and the "type" of game they are making. Valheim was this brutal yet cozy viking survival game in escencially a viking purgatory. It was steeped in some lore and low fantasy with some magic but fairly rare. The game progresses nicely but things start to take a drastic turn in the Mistlands and gets worse with Ashlands. Mistlands adds Mages: glass canons for the most part but if played right they are pretty powerful compared to a Viking. Ashlands is my real issue; - Siege mechanics are broken and siege weapons from Mistlands and Ashlands are pretty useless. Balistae target everyone or 1 mob, they suck at shooting mobs but kill vikings nicely. The battering ram is good for breaking walls and the catapult is the top siege weapon and completely useless as it will only damage the forts in the ashlands... and not even the mobs in Ashlands. However, you don't even need to build siege weapons for the forts in Ashlands, you can just build a platform and cheese the fort, the take all the goodies, pointless. - Mages get OP in Ashlands with 3+ new staves, one of which summons a powerful undead fire troll which kills everything. - Vikings suck, I show up with my Ashlands gear, sword and board and I might as well just eat popcorn as my mage buddies flatten everything in Ashlands.... I thought this was a Viking game, not a high fantasy Mage game. - The new boat, which you have to use to get to Ashlands is ridiculously huge and you need to sail in very tight spaces.. was this a Dev joke? - Mob Density and respawn in Ashlands is ridiculously high, hours spent clearing an area you just cleared to progress... the grind is very annoying. - Everything hits extremely hard to the point that any latency will get you killed. - Ashlands is poorly optimized, the biome eats FPS, performance suffers if you want nice graphics. - The end boss is nearly impossible to kill unless you are a Mage... what happened to Vikings? - I run a server, lag is unforgiving. I even spoke with Smiffie, a Dev, in their discord about their networking and they have no plans to address it and say it is connection issues. They say the game was never meant to be multiplayer and best games are 2-3 people not more. Even with 2-3 in the same continent latency is awful due to their network architecture and packet handling (from what I understand). This is with everyone on fibre and 60ms ping to server. The Server is not the master, the clients are which makes for some interesting duping mechnics or deletion mechanics based on latency or disconnects from the server. If you want to play with more the 5 people in the same zone in Ashlands.... good luck, you will wake up dead. Singleplayer game with multiplayer capability... sorta. The game has such a robust build engine that playing alone is a shame and this game naturally lends it's self to play with others, however, either the engine or the coding will not allow it to do so without major performance hits or lag. The Dev's have no intention of optimizing or revisiting the network architecture, this is from conversation with Smiffie. Each new biome is taking longer and longer to develop. Mistlands was a full year out from Hearth and Home and was definitely well done even with the Mage addition. Ashlands was 1.5years after and well... feels broken and rushed. The siege mechanics are shockingly disappointing. Power curve from biome to biome its exponential leaving me wondering what the Deep North will be like. I was sold the idea that Valheim was a cozy casual yet brutal survival game and I fell it love with it; however, after recent developments and the direction or directionlessness of Ashlands, the flaws I used to over look are now glaring. Combat is annoying due to poor hitbox mechanics, so many great weapons that suck because if you are not on the same level, you can't hit the mob but it can kill you. Stamina system is awful... spend most of your time walking in circles trying to regain stamina to hit a mob which gets worse the better your weapons as they use more stamina to hit. To make matters worse, stamina is the same regen rate, so if you have 50 or 250, it regens at the same fill rate, so having more stamina means you need to wait longer for it to refill... this feels like a punishment. The game is ambitious, has heart but feels like it is severely lacking in direction. Instead of fixing issues with the game or tweaking things like combat or network architecture they introduce cross-play and Mac... I am all for indie studios but IG's recent changes to the game I have loved for years..... I cannot recommend it to anyone until they address the following; - power gap between mages and non-mages - Network Architecture.. it is game breaking in the Ashlands - Combat, specifically hitbox and stamina - a road map....Show moreShow less
Has more game play, less bugs, and is polished better than most AAA games while still being in early access. I would pay $40 for this game, keep up the good work devs! My life is consumed by this game. I don't remember the last time a game kept me up late, couldn't fall asleep because I was thinking what I would do the next day, and get all my irl s*** done for the day so I have plenty of time to play later on! I wish I could hug you and thank you in person for giving me back my love of video games, which has been gone for some time!!!Show moreShow less
I have supported this games development since release as it was a gem among gems. But as of late, it has been shown that the developers and their mods (if they are using any) do not know how to deal with people enquiring or criticising their development timeline, as their only solution towards people concerned with its development and wishing for content is issuing them warnings and bans. Accusing people of Spam, and being off-topic in derailing a discussion....in a dev log, about the development of the game....see where this is going? Here is a copy/paste of my comment that was issued a warning in their latest Dev Log; "Apparently my comment calling out the devs on stretching out a 1 year roadmap into 5 years development was taken down with me issued a "Warning" for Spam....of which the comment did not follow the definition of Spam in either noun or verb. So now i am going to air out some dirty laundry. Their 2021 Roadmap consisted of; Update 1: -Hearth and Home Update 2: -Cult of the Wolf Update 3: -Ships and the Sea Update 4: -Mistlands If Odin Wills It: -Multiplayer interactions -Combat improvements -Moon Phases -Tar Pits -Vender Inventory Expansion -Svartalfr Brigands -More Unique Locations -Sandbox Mode -Munin Now they later put a warning at the bottom of this original roadmap stating it was cancelled. Note, that the game released in Feb 2021, and they only released the hearth and home update in Sept of 2021. Mistlands didn't come out until Dec 2022. In Aug 2023 we got Hildir's Request, a new merchant....See where this is going. It practically takes them between 7 to 15 months for content updates initially promised for the first year, and whoever moderates this channel got upset that accused them of stretching out development thanks to their overwhelming success on launch, and with covid. So to the moderator deleting peoples messages, banning disgruntled consumers etc, if you can't respond to an individual in a thread and disprove anyone's claims, then do not flex your authority and state someones claims go against guidelines just because you are upset by them." They banned me after i saw another person who questioned their development as did i, whom I simply warned them that their comment might get a warning or banned.....ironic huh? If this is how they treat their community, then i cannot support this game anymore.Show moreShow less
