At first glance, the skill trees look interesting — until you realize they’re basically just progress bars. Do the thing, bar goes up, stuff unlocks. You can’t specialize into being a crafter, gatherer, or builder. There’s no real choice involved, it’s all linear. And if that’s the case, I’m not sure why these need to be full “skill trees” at all. The same goes for powers and magic. The web looks awesome — bat form, ghost form, blood vision — but in practice it’s only a handful of active abilities surrounded by passive bonuses. Faster heavy attacks, minor percentage boosts, things like that. You end up doing the same light, fairly weak-feeling attacks over and over. There are no weapons to find or use, just basic attacks, a dodge, and a counter. It feels like the game wanted to lean toward Arkham-style combat, but didn’t fully commit. I want to be clear: I hope everything I’ve mentioned is simply a result of how early this build is. I genuinely like the aesthetic, the atmosphere, and the general feel of the game. This is absolutely a genre I love. And if the devs somehow read this (unlikely, but still): Please don’t take this as an insult — and please don’t try to reinvent the wheel. Players need to feel progression. Basic weapons leading to advanced ones. Simple clothing evolving into armor or robes. Early attacks growing into something more brutal or elegant. Rough wooden structures turning into polished stone keeps. For now, I’ll be keeping an eye on the game and hoping it improves with time — but I’m going to step away for the moment and let it bake a bit longer.Show moreShow less
Started the game wanting to become a feared vampire overlord. Ended up spending most of my time flying around as a bat and obsessively upgrading my castle like I was starring in "Vampire Property Brothers" The locals feared me Not because I drank their blood Because my castle had better curb appeal than their entire village 10/10 Would transform into a flying rodent and ignore my responsibilities again especially with friends.Show moreShow less
I'll keep it and carry on, but I honestly hate that I am having to play a premade character, I want to be the Vampire Lord, not this Dragos guy -.- I'm leaving it for now at no recommendation, and i'd say only get this If you want a narrative driven survival crafter/rpg with a main character than an OC. Edit: Okay, so I should clarify a few bits I guess for those who have the literacy level of a minor, I simply put no recommendation for those who want their own character, especially in a game that allows co-op, now I didn't test that part, as my mate didn't want to play, maybe someone can clarify, but if we were just 2-4 of the same dude running around, then that would be daft. these developers already had something to follow based on popularity and how great a game can be just by simply looking at V rising. No I didn't look up the game beforehand, unlike some people I know, I enjoy playing a game for its first impressions and I think 30 mins that allows me to see the visuals, action and Idea are more than possible in that time from tutorial alone. also, someone said my favourite game list must be small, I don't know how you came to that conclusion, while yes, I much prefer an OC over a main character, I'm not against it in larger open world games, like the Witcher, or KCD. (I don't know why he mentioned tomb raider in that list? is Tomb raider an RPG now?) as for gameplay, if you really want my honesty around that, combat is lacking, just mash and dodge, so far in the early game the counter is simply for style points and I've only seen it shove people away so far, would love to see some executions in combat, movement feels sluggish thus far, it took me three attempts to make simple ledge jump, game had me feeling like an IGN reviewer, the building aspect is neat and I love blueprint based crafting over figuring out yourself what buildings look like, yes I'm the Minecraft player with the dirt house, however it seems quite tedious to build, but again this was 30 mins of first impressions so maybe that's easier down the line. I am keeping the game simply because I am hopeful that with a bit of polish, it could be a good game, alternatively they could work on a separate, sandbox-ish mode for your OC and co-op, then also have Dragos, or whatever his name is, as like the story mode and at the end of the day, I still get to play a vampire, so it's still cool in its own right, I'm still waiting on a game where I can be a werewolf instead :P And Lastly, theirs no middle ground guys, I can only say yes or no, which is why i said if you're after your own character, you may not want this, steam needs to give a mixed feelings button.Show moreShow less
It's okay. Pros: Has an enriching story Has a Co-Op option Gives you a decent amount of building materials starting out Building mode is interesting Graphics are decent Gives you a good warning of when the sun is about to rise In Co-OP In order to progress the story everyone has to talk to the NPC Cons: I hate that I can't customize my character and play as a female vampire. Limestone (the main material needed to build your castle) is a b***h to find and doesn't respawn as quickly as other things (though once you get a servant at the gathering table then its not so bad) Can't move buildings, can only destroy them and rebuild somewhere else. Sometimes I get stuck on things that aren't there. The tutorial could be better. Had to learn a lot of the controls by looking them up. Gameplay overall is a little clunky Can't see the painting options for the stairs or the railings Overall, I'd recommend the game after a few patches or when it's on a better discount. Since it just released, and is in early access, I will give it a thumbs up for now.Show moreShow less
I don't even know which lens to review this game through. An open world adventure game? Yeah, it fits the description but the world is so small theres not much adventuring to be had. A hack and slash combat game? It definitely plays like one but lacks any depth whatsoever. Basic attacks can kill everything and there's only one playstyle. A colony builder? I mean, I guess? It's mechanically simplistic and often times feels out of place and even downright unnecessary considering how easy the game is. There's not much that needs crafting or maintaining that you'd actually need to automate. I guess i'm a little confused as to what the devs were trying to accomplish here. Feels like a jack of all trades master of none experience that can be ran through in a single sitting (at least thats my experience) There's just not much to cling on to here. Combat should have been the core focus, but it takes a back seat with how basic it is. You'll become overpowered the second you unlock bat form and blood vortex. After that combat goes: fly in, press 4 most everything dies, kill the remaining few enemies with a couple smacks, fly away. That's in a camp full of inquisitors too. There's just no challenge at all, no sense of ramp up. There's also no boss fights or really strong enemies to test your stamina against. It's all quite dull really. Well what about the castle building and colony builder? Surely there's plenty to sink your fangs into with that system? Nah. i'm afraid not. Base building is super generic with a pitiful variety of build pieces to choose from. More pieces are unlocked by making a bigger uglier castle so you can tear it down and use newly unlocked interesting pieces instead. As for colony building, it's there but serves hardly any function outside of material collection. The problem is that crafting in this game isn't a requirement, so there's no need to engage in the interesting rumors system to go find the perfect villager for your vampire army. The only time I found it helpful was picking up someone who had a boosted guard stat so I could plop them on defense duty at one of my 3 generic outposts in the other regions. That leads me into the next issue. The other regions really dont feel that important aside from acting as a requirement unlock the next region and deliver me a paltry 300 gold per night. The devs really missed an opportunity to let the player build a defensible outpost with weapons and traps to fend off inquisition raids. Could have been a cool minigame that took place to protect your outpost, but instead you toss a vampire with high guard stat on guard duty and get a Flawless Victory message every night that you defended your outpost. Super lame. And that's my long-winded way of saying there's just not much blood to be drained in this game. When you strip away the generic mechanics the core game and main story is painfully short (even with the missing final chapter being considered) You can beat it in your starting armor and race through it in a handful of hours. Most of the systems that look like they're designed to keep you working at them like the rumos system, really don't matter since your vampire servants take a back seat in terms of usefulness. Overall it feels like a game with interesting concepts taken from other games and smashed together in an incohesive way with no real aim or direction. Just mechanics present for the sake of it. It's a shame and I don't see things changing because it's abundantly apparent there was no solid imagination or direction established at the start of this project, just vague ideas loosely implemented. Pretty mush anything this game does V Rising does better.Show moreShow less
I’ve seen some takes trying to figure out what this game is supposed to be, and honestly that seems to be where people are getting tripped up. It pulls from a few different ideas like exploration, combat, and base or colony systems, but it never claims to be a hardcore version of any of them. The world isn’t massive, but it also doesn’t pretend to be. You are not running across empty terrain for ten minutes just to reach the next point of interest. It is compact, easy to navigate, and keeps things moving. That is a design choice, not a failure. Combat is simple, sure, but it is smooth and works well for what the game is. And if someone chooses to unlock the strongest abilities, use them constantly, and then complain that everything dies too fast, that sounds more like a player choice than a design problem. You can make almost any game feel easy if you go out of your way to do that. Base building and colony systems are there to support you, not control how you play. You are not forced into nonstop micromanagement just to survive, which is honestly refreshing. Calling that pointless just because it is not mandatory misses the point. Some players like having the option without being forced into it. The colony system does exactly what it is supposed to do. It helps generate resources and supports progression in the background. It is not trying to be the entire game. If someone expected it to carry everything, that is more on expectations than on the system itself. As for regions and outposts, yes, they are more about progression right now. Could they be deeper? Of course. That is also what Early Access is for. These systems feel like a foundation that will be expanded, not a finished product pretending to be complete. Then there is the comparison to V Rising, which really does not make much sense. That game is built around grind, pressure, and in many cases dealing with other players messing with your progress. This game clearly is not trying to do that. Expecting it to follow the same formula and then criticizing it for not doing so is just applying the wrong standard. Not every vampire game needs to revolve around logging in and wondering if everything you built is gone. At the end of the day, this is a more relaxed PvE experience. It is simpler, yes, and it still needs polish, but it also lets you play without constantly fighting the game itself. It does not overwhelm you with systems or punish you for not engaging with everything at maximum efficiency. It is Early Access, it has room to grow, and some systems need more depth. That is fair to say. But there is a solid foundation here, and more importantly, it is actually fun. And that matters a lot more than trying to force it into being something it was never meant to be.Show moreShow less
An Open World vampire game where you play as a premade character? I'll wait until this gets out of EA.Show moreShow less
So far so good, I think I wanted something more like a RPG (wanted to make my own vampire not be some random dude) and this does have some of those elements but the game really wants you to focus on base building and getting vampire thralls to do tasks around your castle. Only 90 minutes in so hoping some more gameplay options open up as I go. If you like vampires and base building you will probably like this. Game usually runs smooth but I have had a few instances of lagging and stutter but, that is to be expected with this being the first day of early access.Show moreShow less
I feel bad for giving an early access a thumbs down, but after almost 2 decades of playing early access titles, I can't pretend this is not a really rough state. Combat is simple, overly so, balancing will need a lot of work. There is no economy and the few traders don't seem to respawn their inventory. Nothing is really hard to get except maybe tomes (books seem a bit limited). Crafting is barebones. Castle building is neat but V Rising was still more complete than this. Speaking of V Rising, the comparisons abound, short of this being more 3rd person than topdown, it's on paper at least, an extremly similar game. The issue however is that V Rising was much more balanced and fined tuned when it launched in early access. V Rising is also technically geared more towards multiplayer but at this point as this game is not really an RPG and it doesn't have a character creator, I'd recommend waiting a bit and let the devs cook. This is isn't bad, but there's still too many minor bugs and lack of polish to recommend to most. I'll reassess in a few months.Show moreShow less
