I didn't want to leave a negative review, but Gaijin's blatant contempt for their own players has forced my hand. War Thunder is a game like no other, with a comprehensive damage system, combined arms, and variety of beautifully modeled tanks, aircraft and ships. Unfortunately, this "uniqueness" has left Gaijin with little real competition over the years. What started off as a "free to play" title has over time become less and less free. Gaijin keeps adding nations and vehicles, while at the same time increasing repair costs and lowering RP/SL gain. A premium account isn't enough to comfortably progress anymore, now you also have to buy premium vehicles in every nation. For the new players reading this, Gaijin has recently admitted that they balance free vehicles around a negative SL income for average players. That means they WANT you to lose money by playing, so you'll be forced to buy a top tier premium vehicle. This isn't just greedy, it also destroys the matchmaker and the balance of the game. Since you only profit using premium vehicles they often end up being spammed. In battlerating 8.7, more than half the players on each team are in premium tanks. This results in rampant "one death leaving". These players only spawn their premium tank and leave when it's destroyed, leaving their team in a bad position. Sometimes the premium is their only tank for the tier, othertimes it's because "free" tanks aren't worth the high cost to repair. Gaijin and their purposefully frustrating economy is ultimately to blame for this. There's so many other issues and scandals I could bring up, like how you can't repair or extinguish flames on your new tank before unlocking "parts" and "FPE". Gaijin wants you to pay gold to skip the grind for these essential tools. In it's current state, I wouldn't recommend this game to anybody. That might seem hypocritical considering my hours spent in this game, but believe me. It's new players who suffer the most. Gaijin doesn't care about me, you, or the playerbase. Don't make the same mistake as me. Find another game that values your input, and respects your time. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Edit, July 26: Much has happened since May and the publishing of this review. Most importantly, on 13th of June, Gaijin published a roadmap of planned economy changes. Most recent roadmap update as of this edit: https://warthunder.com/en/news/8374-roadmap-following-the-roadmap-battle-pass-available-in-simulator-battles-en This was an unprecedented event, as we have never seen this much transparency from the Devs before. Despite tempered expecations and a healthy dose of skepticism on the part of myself and many others, the roadmap is actually progressing according to schedule. One of the key criticisms in my review, that of SL (Silver Lions) has been (largely) adressed, earnings were increased across the board, and repair costs adjusted. All ground vehicles now have a basic version of Parts and FPE available from the start without needing to unlock the Parts and FPE modifications: basic parts can repair components to partial functionality, while basic FPE is single-use. Aircraft with countermeasures now start with a basic flare loadout, while mixed / full countermeasure loadouts require unlocking the flare modification. You no longer have to pay repair cost when teamkilled (finally), and newly purchased premium vehicles now include 15 free backups (extra spawns). Backups are a consumable however, and as such it doesn't fully alleviate the "one death leaving" issue, as players will quickly spend their 15 backups and continue this behavior after. Gaijin needs to consider making the backup permament. I don't mean to diminish these changes, they were sorely needed, but there's still a long way to go. As of today, no changes have been made to RP (Research Point) gain, which is the main cause for slow progression, especially in Ground Forces Mode. The matchmaking system desperately needs a major overhaul, and battle ratings need to be decompressed. While matchmaking changes are mentioned in the roadmap, it remains to be seen how Gaijin chooses to handle this issue. All in all, while the changes are positive so far and show a lot of promise going forward, my review will stay unchanged until the roadmap is concluded, and the full effects can be seen. Lastly I want to thank you all so much for your attention and gracious awards! Thanks to you I have amassed just over 2.5 Million Steam Points! That's mind-boggling, I could've never anticipated this much engagement writing my little review back in May. I apologize for the late update, and let's hope for more good news.Show moreShow less

Anyone with an asterisk in front of their name is a cross-platform player playing on the Playstation 4. Aim for them. They're pretty easy targets. EDIT: I've just come back to this game after a 9-year hiatus, and I've got two observations: 1) The asterisk is now replaced with a gamepad, though I'm not sure if that applies to PC players using a controller or not. Many of you pointed this out to me. 2) They're still pretty easy targets.Show moreShow less
I have a hard time recommending this game right now, and I will explain why.... At least here on steam, I don’t have to worry about being bullied by Gaijin for writing a critical review. I really want to like this game. Unlike a lot of kiddies who post on the forums, I am much older. I am a gamer from the 80's, growing up on simulators from the 80's and 90's like F-15 Strike Eagle, F-18 Interceptor, Birds of Prey, Their Finest Hour, Knights of the Sky, etc. These were on the Commodore 64, Amiga 500, etc. If you are younger and unfamiliar with these titles, look them up. It will give you an idea of how long I have been around flying the cyber skies and coming from an experienced point of view. I guess that's why I am amused when kids try to lecture players who have been flying sims for decades before they were even on the earth. So, for the younger among us, you can learn something from your elders. Warthunder is very frustrating, it has the potential to be a really good game, but instead is held back by Russian nationalism and left over cold war era mentalities. I have spent many hours and money on this game, I have supported them financially and really have given them time to fix their problems, unfortunately they continue to run with a delusional narrative. Often you will hear people claim there is a Russian bias to the game. Well, to be blunt, yes, it true. The only people who argue otherwise always prove to be A) of Russian decent themselves and take it personally, B) Are apologists for Gaijin and tote the typical fan boy nonsense, or C) They use Russian tanks or planes and are comfortable in their over powered vehicles, afraid they will be taken away. Recently, one of the developers for Gaijin stated that “they cater to the Russian audience because that’s where the money is, they also don’t want to be embarrassed about Russian past or tech”… So what does this mean exactly?....Basically he is saying they’re going to fudge the facts for the sake of Russian ego? I take issue with Warthunder because Gaijin continues to claim they strive for “historical accuracy” however they have shown no real attempt to make that so. They make disparaging comments about German WWII tanks, planes and tech of the era. They claim their hardware was inferior to Soviet hardware, and all the publications that say otherwise is pure “western propaganda”. Any objective student of WWII history knows the Germans were known for having very advanced superior equipment. There is a reason Both the U.S. and the Soviets were grabbing up as many German scientist and tech as they could at the end of the war. The Planes and Tanks Warthunder has dishonestly taken Russian planes that were underperforming or produced in low numbers, and exaggerated their abilities. They also have a whole SEPARATE development team for the Russian planes vs the rest of the planes. What does that tell you? The P-38 lightning doesn’t perform anything like its real counterpart, I thought, “man, this plane flies like crap”, so I did some research. I found out that Gaijin gave the P-38 a heavy bomber/fighter flight model, they assigned the A-20 flight model to the P-38 lighting! But wait, what did they do with Russian planes that had unfinished flight models? They were simply void of any drag penalties. Instead, they left out variables on the planes, causing them to perform UFO like Arial maneuvers. The bombers are all nerfed with bomb load capacity, however without any explanation, the Russian Yer is conveniently left without the same changes, and is allowed a higher capacity. ALL U.S. Navy aircraft are atrocious. They don’t perform near to their real models. The F-4U Corsair, which was nick named “whispering death” by the Japanese can’t be flown more than two minutes without it beginning to overheat. The P-63, which was not a very good plane in general, is given super capabilities. Gee…is that because the Russians used this plane in the war from Lend Lease? Well, what does this tell you? If you look up the P-63 for the Americans, and the P-63 for the Russians, WOW!....the P-63 for the Russians is magically superior in performance despite being an export of the same plane. The bombers?....They use to perform ok. Now their destroyed with a massive nurf where a couple of shots from a machine gun will explode a B-29! Its truly ridiculous. Wanting to see for myself, I began to fly Russian planes. Sure enough, the ease in which I could fly around and destroy the enemy with ease was absurd. I shook my head in disgust and quit right there. I later came back and tried again, yet the same thing is happening in tanks as well. You have T-34’s driving around pawning Tigers for crying out loud. There is so much examples of this, we could be here all day. This is only further supported by their absurd forum posts where they talk about Soviet tech being superior to all other nations in WWII. It really is amazing how strong their bias truly is. Then, Gaijiin behaves like a bunch of KGB thugs. If ANYONE brings up anything deemed slightly critical on their forums, ALL dissent is immediately locked, silenced and deleted. Threads are deleted or locked, and people get banned, simply for holding an opinion they don’t like. Google Gajiin extorion scandal That behavior alone truly is disgusting. Here is a real kicker though….look at Gaijiin rules for the games. They state that “historical characters who violated human rights are not permitted to be mentioned”. Hmm…so History they don’t approve of is out, talking about history is out….but here is the best part. Hitler is a no no…can’t talk about him. But wait!......Stalin, a monster who arguably was just as bad if not worse than Hitler, killing 20 million or more of his own people, he is perfectly fine! In fact, Warthunder will even let you put the words “For Stalin” in Russian on the side of your tank or plane! YAY for double standards! Team Work?.....foget about it! You have kids flying around ramming, or...while you are working on a plane, they will show no dicipline or respect at all. Rather then hold off your wiing, they will try to fly in front of you while your shooting, and take your kill! Now, 3 things happen here. A} They fly infront of your fire and get hit, then you get penalized for team damge. They also will idiotically accuse you of twam killing. B) they dont get hit by your fire, but cause you to have to break off to avoid a collsion and screw up your kill. Or C) they collide into you, and then accuse you of ramming them. There is no mutual respect for team work in this game. It would help if they would implement coms for the whole team, and allow more then 4 players in a squad. Another nice feature would be the ability to fly in the same plane. Firends should be able to get in a bomber together. As of now, IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad seems to be clearly much better. In the end, this is a good game that could be great. It really could be. Unfortunately, it’s undermined by its own developers who have been spoon fed Communist era propaganda to the point of absurdity, who then turns around and can’t help but put it in their own game, only to pull oppressive tact by silencing anyone who dares to point out such nonsense. I have been waiting a long time for them to get with the program; unfortunately I am most likely waiting in vain. Warthunder has become nothing but a propaganda mill, with Delusional re-writes of history where Red Army planes filled the skies and dominated over the Luftwaffe and all other nations. It’s a joke and insult to call this poor excuse of a “simulator” anything close to being “historically accurate”…only in the world of Commie make believe is this game close to anything historical. Sadly, I’ll probably still play this game, only to be constantly reminded of how great it could be. I have given Gaijin about $100.00 of my money, and sadly I will never get its worth.Show moreShow less

Pre Patch 1.37 Rating - 8/10 Great Post Patch 1.37 Rating - 1/10 Absolutely Horrible (Bad business ethics delevoper Gaijin) I have to give this game two ratings. One for pre-patch 1.37 and one for post-patch 1.37 which was introduced mid-Dec'13. My opinion of this game (and the Russian developer Gaijin) basically went from a full positive thumbs up to an absolute full thumbs down rating since the release of the latest patch 1.37 mainly due to the way the developer has handled it by misleading, lying and cheating their existing customer base. I have basically stopped playing what was one of my favorite games since they have released the last patch. Part of this decision is based on the in-game changes they made to the game in the patch but even more reason was the horrible way that Gaijin handled this and treated their customers and player base. To summarize, the most significant changes in latest patch 1.37 introduced some new aircraft, changed the tiering system, progression system and matchmaking for battles. While there were some positives in 1.37 like new aircraft and flight models, the negatives far outweigh the positives. They have condensed the previous aircraft tiering system from 20 levels into 5 tiers which is far less transparent in terms of leveling and has caused terrible matchmaking where you are now often flying against aircraft which are either far inferior or superior to you. The worst and most underhanded change however has been the progression system whereby you advance to unlock new aircraft. The developer Gaijin falsely advertised prior to releasing 1.37 that this new progression system would be quicker but it has been proven by many players thru posting of clear calculations and spreadsheets that it is in fact the exact opposite and much slower. Previously you leveled each country from 1 to 20 and unlocked multiple aircraft per country each level. Under the new 5 tier system, you are forced to unlock one aircraft at a time and funneled into having to use the previous aircraft in the research tree to unlock the next. As a result the new progression system has proven to be 4-5 x slower than it was previously to unlock the same amount of aircraft in the higher levels. The result of all of this is that the developer has essentially covertly thru this patch increased the price and devalued their in-game currency (GE-Golden Eagles) by 4-5 times what it was pre-patch!!! Since it is a F2P game, it essentially means that if you decide to buy a monthly subscription it will now take you probably 4-5 months longer you need to subscribe than previously to unlock the same amount of aircraft. And I am not talking about a just a few hours here....it will now take you literaly hundreds of hours more to unlock the higher level aircraft. For newcomers who are joining after patch 1.37 you will of course not notice any of this as you have nothing to compare the current pricing and progression but just be warned that this could happen again. I would not trust this developer again! As a customer who bought a steam pack with a subscription and a lot of GE in-game currency before the new patch I feel totally ripped off! Gaijin of course has the right to change their prices post-patch. It is their own risk or reward decision. When it comes however to devaluing the in-game GE currency for people who purchased prior to the patch at an advertised rate it is downright unethical what they have done. I have stopped playing this game as a result and I guess will never use my GE left on my account unless Gaijin makes a total turnaround and admits thier very questionable business ethics and turning their backs on previous customer base. I have lost total respect for this developer Gaijin for this and also after many people complained on their website forums about these changes and posting proof of that the new progression system was falsely advertised and the currency de-valued, they simply deleted and ignored posts. The WT moderators here on Steam also delete any posts which are in any way critical of these very questionable business ethics of Gaijin. I've never seen such kind of crazy censorship towards their own customers as I've seen on both the Gaijin and Steam War Thunder forums in my life. I really feel this developer should be blacklisted from selling any further products on Steam unless they offer some compensation to their customers who were caught up in this scam of suddenly overnight de-valuing their in-game currency that was bought previous to the patch. UPDATE: May 14th -> I AM CLOSING THIS REVIEW FOR ANY FURTHER COMMENTS AS I UNDERSTAND THAT THERE IS A NEW PATCH 1.39. MY REVIEW WAS BASED ON 1.37 AND DISPLEASURE WITH THE WAY GAIJIN HANDLED THAT IN TERMS OF THE CUSTOMER RELATIONS AND BASICALLY DE-VALUING CUSTOMERS PURCHASED GE's AND IN-GAME CURRENCY WITHOUT NOTICE OR COMPENSATION. I PERSONALLY HAVE DELETED THE GAME FROM MY PC in JANUARY AFTER 1.37 AND HAVE NO INTENTION TO RETURN AND SUPPORT THIS COMPANY EVEN IF THEY MAY HAVE FINALLY MADE IMPROVEMENTS. WISH YOU ALL GOOD GAMING!Show moreShow less
Edit: It's been years since I've written this review and I have to say this game has gone downhill. The review was written when I enjoyed it but now I can't even get myself to play it anymore.
