Game is good, except for balancing at the start. I now completed and collected everything there is. But this is not the reason for a thumbs down. UPDATE: The following is likely not true anymore because this was fixed. I personally cannot test this right now though, but people in the comments do. UPDATE 2: It seems the writes are still pretty high as reported from other sources. The game currently generates 50-60GB of save game writes to disk per hour (checked with a program called AppReadWriteCounter, other people in the comments used CrystalDiskMark). If that disk is a SSD it will wear out and get "destroyed" (exaggeration hint for some people in the comments!) at an insane pace. As long as this is not fixed I can't recommend or play the game any further. For some people in the comments who still don't get it: yes, it doesnt "destroy", but wears down your SSD. Will it cause you loosing all your data? No. Is it still extremely unoptimized? Yes. Do you really want to live in a world where this is EVEN MORE normalized than today? Where every program just does whatever, hog 2GB of RAM to display a text box, mining crypto on the side, write to disk like they never heard the word optimization in their life... Instead of ranting about this being fake, not significant enough, etc... what about just making sure developers actually care about optimization again? And again, this is a significant flaw which wears down your SSD. The game writes up to 2 times its own size to disk EVERY HOUR. Edit: I found a workaround for this. You can simply create a symlink from where the save data usually is to some place on a HDD. In my case I used this powershell command: New-Item -ItemType Junction -Path "C:\Users\Nick\AppData\Local\R5\Saved" -Target "H:\Windrose_Saved" You need to adapt the name and target location for your system of course.Show moreShow less
Dope game! The whiners ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about PVP can go lay down somewhere. Not every game has to be a copy and paste of the last 500 games madeShow moreShow less
Good game? Yes. Fun game? Not really. Could it become fun? Maybe. Will it get there? We’ll see. It feels like a game with a strong foundation, but the actual moment-to-moment experience is weirdly tiring. The pacing is off, the interactions can feel awkward, and almost everything in the world wants to kill you except the three factions you barely ever see. That creates constant tension, but not the fun kind. More the kind that makes you feel like the game is always leaning over your shoulder, breathing in your ear. The biggest problem is that nothing seems allowed to be a real one-on-one fight. Dodos come in groups. Crabs come in groups. Half the wildlife travels like it signed a union contract. The only things that actually felt like proper solo encounters were the boss and the undead spawning on the beach. Everything else is basically a small committee trying to beat you up. The ships are even worse. Most of the time you are not fighting one ship, you are fighting three at once, and it seems like that is going to be the standard for most of the game outside of a few heavier quest-related encounters. I understand why they might want naval combat to feel dangerous and chaotic, but right now it is mostly just annoying. It is not especially fun, and it is not especially engaging. It is just constant pressure without much satisfaction. Then there is the ugly part. You finish the Copper Age, and instead of feeling stronger or more capable, the game basically throws you back to square one. You land in a new set of islands and suddenly a goat is treating you like the boar did when you first started. That kills the sense of progression completely. Moving between ages should feel like growth. Instead, it feels like New Game+ designed by someone who hates continuity. The sailing loop also starts to drag fast. Sail for a minute or two, run into another pack of enemy boats. Move a little farther, another pack. There are screenshots with ten enemy boats on screen at once, which is less “epic pirate adventure” and more “naval traffic jam from hell.” And from what I have seen, it only gets worse in the Iron Age. Respawns are another headache. You can clear something out, move a few steps, and suddenly enemies are back like they were hiding behind the curtain waiting for their cue. You kill a goat in a cave, which is already a sentence that should raise questions, then you move slightly to the right and now a fresh group of goats is charging you in the same cave for reasons known only to the dark gods of spawn logic. It is not immersive, it is not challenging in a satisfying way, and it definitely is not fun. Boarding enemy ships somehow manages to be even more absurd. Your sailors do not respawn, but the enemy crew does. So if you are not fast enough, congratulations, the game turns into a one-versus-nine clown festival and expects you to salute. That is not difficulty, that is a prank. So yes, it is a nice early access game. There is something here. You can see the shape of a genuinely good pirate game buried under all the chaos. But right now, it is not there yet in terms of fun or engagement. I get what the developers are trying to do, and I can see the ambition, but the current experience still feels like it needs time in the oven. If you really want to support the project, buy it. If it starts to get frustrating, stop playing and come back later after some patches. There might be a very good game here in two years. Right now, though, it feels more like a promising rough draft than something fully worth diving into. L.E Just so you know, i can delete any comment, i am not your punching bag. So if you are just spewing stuff i am gonna delete. I know about the settings guys, that's not the issue. Developer came out and said that we should be fighting 3 on 1, this is a design choice. No amount of "settings" would change that. And that's my complaint. 31 GB of ram is because hardware reserved for my motherboard with this type of cpu. Nothing to see here. Steam takes available ram instead of installed. And doesn't allow float numbers, so that's that.Show moreShow less
Amazing that the Windrose Crew studio of like 15 people can make a better Skull and Bones than Ubisoft with their thousands of employees and billions of dollars. This is what an AAAA game should look like, Ubislop could never.Show moreShow less
Not ready yet. Wait till a combat update drops. It has a lot going for it already, but combat is such a huge part of this experience and it needs major improvement. I'm shocked that most reviewers don't mention this. Speaking as a game designer in the industry, an avid Souls-game player, a huge sailing and pirate game nerd, and a lover of survival-craft games... - On-foot combat is awful -- enemies give very little warning before attacking, can't be stunned, and even boars do so much damage to you that it's laughable. To succeed you need to have a spawnpoint (tent) built nearby, and just keep throwing yourself at them. - The food is probably really cool, but ultimately its main purpose is to increase the size of your healthbar. At the start of the game, this means it'll take 3-4 hits to kill you instead of 1-2. - Don't bother jumping onto an enemy ship -- the crew will keep spawning infinitely, and when you die, you won't be able to recover your stuff. - You can board a ship with your crew after getting its health to 10% or so, but there's no incentive to do so. Again, if you die during this, you'll respawn on land far away from your ship. (Your ship is not a spawnpoint.) If you DO succeed in killing their crew, you get loot and the ship gets scuttled. The exact same loot drops if you just blast it, without risking your life and taking far less time. It does have a lot going for it already -- helming a ship and using the guns feels amazing, the building mechanics and crafting benches/recipes feel good and balanced, you can upgrade weapons and find cooler ones, the fast travel points is a great idea that is executed well. But please focus on polishing the combat! EDIT: wow, the devs and their stans are really bombing this one. Have fun doing that -- I guess now we know why the game is reviewed at "very positive"Show moreShow less
TL;DR: If you like building, exploration, and you’ve been looking for a pirate survival game that actually delivers - just buy it. You won’t regret it, even at current early access state. Details: Build bases, scavenge resources, and pick fights you might not win (especially if you’re trying to avoid killing dodos). And of course, step up as a captain: craft your own ship, upgrade it, load up the cannons, and take the fight to the sea to prove who really runs these waters. The hook is how smoothly it blends genres: it has vibes of Valheim progression - you want to return in game for make your base better with polished build mechanics. Game is already have great visuals, and naval combat that feels like the pirate game I've been waiting for. Honestly, Windrose is what Sk&Bones should have been and it also scratches that Black Flag itch in the best way. Note about dodos: they might look like a walking chicken nugget… right up until they’re the reason you’re sprinting back to your grave marker with zero dignity. ps: in it's current state, I did removed AI'ish slop part and I feel sorry for using it to make text easier to read pps: I did put 20+ hrs into early alpha build in late 2024, 20+ hrs into later alpha build in 2025, and 10 more hours in demo. And I can't say in words how much game progressed through this time. Based on demo, it is one of smoothly played early access game I had played and there was close to zero bug encounters (only crabs, hehe). Strongly recommended if you feel like playing modern pirate game with crafting bases (actually, it is not necessary, but sooo satisfying), greatly done sea fights (with abordage, ofcourse!) and scavenge for treasures at isles. windrose community discord https://discord.com/invite/windrosecommunityShow moreShow less
This review isn't going to add to the glazed hype, but rather focus on what I think can turn this game into something super special. Let's start with the good. - For a small dev team, they created one off the most immersive "worlds" to be a pirate in. The wind, waves, music and boating is all really well presented. It generally *looks* and runs stunningly. - Crafting is nicely streamlined when compared to other survival games, which I personally appreciate. An example is not needing to take a stack of pining picks with you to gather resources-- you need just one. - It's relatively intuitive to understand, which again, is a nice change of pace when compared to other survival games. - Some well thought out (at first) exploration that feels rewarding. Even though you're mainly doing the same thing from one POI to the next, the way new islands are presented to you feels nice from a progressing standpoint. Stuff that needs serious work. - Generally, the combat in it's entirely is a mess and really ruins the overall game for me.. right now. Immediately upon entering the game you're asked to kill a boar.. if you parry it successfully, it takes a handful of hits and lucky timing to kill it. Most people won't do this and will die a few times until the boar is dead. This is just the beginning of the mess. Wait until you fight multiple pirates at once, or heaven forbid, decide to board a ship. If you're solo, prepare to be rushed and stunlocked. There may be ways to cheese this stuff, and I may be missing something with how I am approaching it, but I am finding the melee combat overall is poorly implemented. Bringing friends can help but it only highlights how bad the agro and combat is when you're all just rush attacking stuff to progress in the game. - While the exploration at first feels fun and exciting, after a few islands, you quickly realize that you're doing the same thing over and over. There needs to be more in-depth puzzles or more variance in these POIs. - It seems you ONLY get XP from questing and none from kills. A small change would be to make the combat more rewarding by offering some XP from kills. Having the most important (to me) aspect of the game [combat] also be the worst part about it, is a bit frustrating. If I hadn't had the amount of game time in it that I have, I would refund it and wait a handful of months to try it again. The same complaints people had from the demo are present here and that worries me.Show moreShow less
Tired of losing all your hard earned stuff to sweaty jobless cheaters? You have arrived.... finally a game that is actually fun and gives you the freedom to explore, create and progress as you play with your friends and not be worried about your game being ruined by other players.Show moreShow less
From a technical standpoint, Windrose is very, very good. The game runs like a dream, looks nice. The multiplayer just works. The server/world hosting options are pretty robust. I didn't run into any bugs in my time playing the game. For early access, this is all pretty impressive! The building systems are solid, crafting is alright, and it's pretty competent in all those categories. On the other side: I just don't think it's that fun from a design perspective: The ship combat is okay, but the lever is jammed so far into the "Arcade style" gameplay of it that it's kind of meaningless. It's also a problem that while it is cool to do it, it's actually a detriment to put multiple players on the same ship, so everyone just captains their own vessel in order to tackle the enemy boats that outnumber you. The melee combat is not fun. It feels like someone had high aspirations for "Souls-like" combat in terms of movement, attack chains, weight and commitment but it can't quite get there for a number of reasons. There's different weapon styles. There's blocks, parries, dashes, but none of the matters because you're usually outnumbered at least 3 to one and you can't quite engage at that level to appreciate the mechanics. If you make a misstep you're going to get killed in less than a second because there's no hit invulnerability to stop them from smacking you all at once. You're forced to safely swing once, run back 10 feet, swing once, run back 10 feet... I'm going to chalk most of my complaints here up to me being bad at video games and the game being in early access, but I found myself mostly grinding my teeth while being outnumbered in every fight.Show moreShow less
