Wolfenstein: The New Order is a blast. It really is, it has enough fun, wacky, and bloody moments to make it worth your while. Don't be deceived, this is not an old school game, it is very much modern, with lots of cut-scenes, iron sights, and linear level design to make Call of Duty eat its heart out. Does that make it bad? Not at all, in fact, it is a well done modern FPS well worth your time. For your first playthrough. After that, trying to play it again, you realize how much fluff the game has, the amount of cutscenes and gameplay moments where you're not blasting through Nazi scum is astounding. There are intense moments of gameplay that will last from 5-15 minutes, with a level or two dedicated to full blown action or stealth just as you prefer it. In between all that is 30-minutes to an hour of doing a whole lot of nothing. Do you enjoy exploring sewer levels, finding lost toys for a character, or getting a sample of moldy concrete for research? It's all here. Another big issue is the illusion of stealth vs. action gameplay, this was prominently advertised before the game's release. It implied that you would be able to go as stealth or Rambo First Blood as you wanted. For some levels, yeah, you can do that, but for most, not really. Sometimes your cover is blown right out of the gate, forcing you to go akimbo AR's and mow through lines of baddies. Other times you're so ill equipped to fight you really can't, and you have to go sneaky or face getting your arm ripped off by a genetically mutated robot German shepherd. Finally, lets talk about the Nazis, there's no Hitler to kill, lets get that out of the gate, and it sucks. The Nazis feel overly evil, and it doesn't give you the proper motivation to kill them. They feel like generic evil-doers that you have to kill in order to progress the story. Instead of an attitude of "business as usual" while committing heinous crimes, it's laughing maniacally as they hold you at gunpoint interrogating you, or flipping tables out of enjoyment as they purge a mental hospital. Don't get me wrong here, they do very much try to give you that feeling of genuine evil, but personally it comes off as a joke. All in all, I like the game, I think it's fun for that first playthough, but once you see the horrible ending it gives you, and trying to play it again realizing how much fluff you sat through, it just isn't worth owning it. It feels like an awesome weekend rental, with lots of bloody action in between the cutscenes and quiet moments. I cannot recommend buying it for $60 unless you're the kind of person that enjoys watching a movie 4 times in a row. -Wrap Up- +Awesome fun at times +Satisfying and punchy weapons with great gore +Lots of near death experiences that make you grip your chair +For a modern FPS, it's a pretty good one +Moon Nazis -Lack of weapon variety -Horrible amount of fluff in cutscenes and quiet moments -Lots of performance issues and not a single patch as of yet -Cliche Nazis, with no Hitlers to kill -Not an old school rebirth of Wolfenstein -Final Opinion- Get it at a Redbox or Blockbuster and invite some friends. Treat it like a movie and you'll get the most fun out of it.Show moreShow less

Its a great game, but do NOT purchase it if you have amd, its incompatible with the latest drivers and will likely never be fixed.Show moreShow less
Update 5/21: My system specs are as follows: Intel i5 2500K @ 3.3GHZ, 32 GB sys ram, 1TB HDD, Windows 8.1, Nvdida Drivers 335.23 ( I know they aren't the latest drivers, but I don't upgrade my drivers until I have trouble playing a game because I've found sometimes new drivers can cause problems with games that were working fine). This is a solid title. No doubts about it. The rumors about the AI being poor don't hold up to what I've experienced so far. Enemies will take cover, duck out to take shots, roll to make themselves harder targets, and commanders will even continuously call in reinforcements until they are killed. I started at "Hard" difficulty and it feels like the right setting for veteran gamers. One potential issue that can make the game easier is that there is a bit of overabundance in terms of medkits and armor for my taste. Every time you clear an area, you'll find that there are significant numbers of health, ammo, and armor picks-up scattered all around. Of course, you can be as judicious as you like in terms of how many you take, but they could have scaled back on the amount of pick-up a bit. The visuals are generally very solid, with the occasional glitch here and there, and the framerate is smooth and steady. The only complaint I have in this regard is that there is still random screen tearing, even with V-Sync enabled, but it's rare, and hasn't really significantly impacted my experience. I have a GTX 660 with 32 gigs of system RAM. I am still early on, but man does this game have atmosphere and some of the best voice acting I have experienced yet. And the cutscenes are quite well done. The guns are fun so far, but I haven't yet really got anything exotic. We'll see how that turns out with additional game time, though. At any rate, the short of it is get this game if you enjoy FPSs. I am having some really good fun with this one, and I'm about to get back to it now! I'll update this review as needed. Cheers! Update: Made it into the castle proper, and the ♥♥♥♥ really hits the fan in terms of the cruelty and burtuality of the nazis. The game has a real sense of drama and solid pacing. They have created some of the creepiest, most warped characters I've seen in a while...Well done, Machine Games! Some folks were concerned about it being too linear, but I really think they did a wonderful job of making it linear without making it seem claustrophobic. The level design is very well done, with just enough nooks and crannies to make you want to see what's down that corridor that's off the main path... Update 5/20: I am about 12-13 hours in now, and my initial impressions still hold. This game is a generally solid FPS experience. There's nothing revolutionary here, but it does what it does well. I forgot to mention that you can earn perks as you progress through the game, and the perks are aligned with different playstyles. For example, there is a perk line for stealth that allows you to increase some of the stealth actions at your disposal (i.e. throwing knives) or to improve upon them (i.e. reduce the amount of noise you make when you sprint). Also, all projectile weapons have alternate fire modes , but you have to unlock them through gameplay. I still recommend veteran gamers starting on at least "Hard". Update 6/3/14: This update is about the weapons, now that I have had a chance to really sink my teeth in the game. There is some variety to be had here in terms of weapons, but you won't see the more exotic weapons (i.e. laser rifles) until much later on in the game. This could be an issue for those of us who are "gun bunnies", and want access sooner rather than later, but I wouldn't let that put you off from what is really a great game. You do get some incremental upgrades to the primary stable of weapons you have access to early on, which include (but are not limited to) the usual suspects like an assault rifle, shotgun, and pistols (which can be actively silenced at will). One such incremental improvement is the addition of a grenade launcher to the standard assault rifle. So, it's not a new weapon, but it definitely adds some additional punch to your damage output, not the mention the fun factor when you want to turn up the heat. I should also note here that you can dual-wield most of your weapons, and, though I take the stealth route for the most part, I have had some solid fun with full-on assualts while dual-wielding shotguns and assualt rifles.Show moreShow less

I noticed that many of the reviews here were written before the authors finished the game. I would be singing the same tune as most of these people, but the latter third of the game is nothing but a disappointment. The developers definitely tried to instill a bit of personality into BJ, our protagonist. He's no longer the hunk of nothingness from the prior games. BJ is now a thoughtful human being. Not a critical moment passes without an internal monologue delivered by him. These moments are a nice touch. His supporting cast is also decent. Some of the characters are quite intriguing. Unfortunately, not much is done with most of these characters. While some are quickly killed before you get a chance to know them, others are cast aside and left with little to do towards the end of the game. Even the main antagonist was given this treatment. He's only seen in the first and last level. Although the attempts to instill some humanity into the narrative is admirable, it's also heavy-handed at times. Too often is the player reminded of the protatgonist's predicaments. We understand that BJ is a man with a conscience, but he does not have to be in agnony throughout the entire game. The presence of a forced romantic subplot doesn't help. Their motivation for engaging in said romance is never explored. It just happens after a large body-count. Wolfenstein's story is one that's yearning for some subtlety. There's potential, but it's not quite there. The level design is possibly the saving grace of this game. There's a fair balance of stealth and combat in the earlier levels, where the stealth routes felt natural, and stealth sections were even spaced between combat scenarios. However, the levels denegerate into sheer chaos in later levels. This would fine, but as the game advanced, the environments also became more bland. While earlier levels were located in interesting locations, like an asylum and a concentration camp, later levels predominately took place in the interiors of generic military structures. Additionally, the officers that you must eliminate to prevent the arrival of reinforcements don't have much of a presence in said later levels, taking away a layer of depth that the game desperately needs. Wolfenstein is a game that I really wanted to like. The developers definitely tried to reinvent the franchise with a more human and personable story, but between the ham-fisted dialogue and the amount of missed potential, I can't recommend Wolfenstein. It would be a fine game to pick up when it's on sale, but not for full price.Show moreShow less

!!!AMD USERS!!! There are serious bugs with this game that still aren't fixed. You can fix the crashing problem by running the game in (A) Win7 compatibility mode, (B) run as an administrator, and by (C) changing the launch .exe name from "WolfNewOrder_x64" to "WolfNewOrder_x32" in the \Steam\SteamApps\common\Wolfenstein.The.New.Order\ directory. This allowed me to play the game. There is also major audio problems with the game, which can be partly solved by using headphones and turning on Virtual Surround (/Control Panel/Sound/Properties/Enhancements tab/) Overall if you aren't comfortable tooling around with the game for a while to get it to work, don't bother picking it up. Otherwise it's a GOOD game, just the support is non-existent. EDIT: Here are my specs for reference... AMD Radeon R9 290x (Crimson / 15.11) i7 6700k 16GB RAM Windows 10 Pro (x64)Show moreShow less
