Tldr: The game has been in early access for several years, and few updates have added very little content. There's still only a small amount of possible events which gets stale fairly quickly. Many bugs have been present since near launch which are still unaddressed. I'm just not sure the great art is worth it for the limited playtime, frustrating grinding, and unaddressed bugs it forces you to slog through. Anyway I love this game and I'm irrationally angry it's not perfect. Edit: as with many rng based games, large amounts of content are locked behind low rng to force grinding and pad out playtime. I'm trying to unlock my first character right now which requires me to go to an otherworld location called the Upper Kingdom. After collecting two different key items, you must find the correct encounter which gives you a chance to roll to try and reach the Upper Kingdom. This is the amount of time it takes to unlock 1 character: Current number of rolls which failed to go to Upper Kingdom while I was carrying the Goblet: 26 31 34 36 Time spent: 6.5 hours Runs wasted trying to unlock: 6 Rolled the Upper Kingdom on the 37th portal Long version: All this is said with the thought that the game is still being made by 1 person. If the dev has hired more help by now, all of my statements here are either wrong or somewhat inaccurate, besides my critique of the lack of content and bugs. I wish the developer would hand off the game to someone else. It's been long enough that the original excuse of personal issues has worn thin, and they either don't care or aren't able to put work into the game to make it a full functional product. It's supposed to be released within the year, but honestly unless it doubles the amount of content I don't see it being worthy of a "full release." Dozens of things still do nothing or don't work. Saving has been broken since release, the Eldritch Statuette and Forest Tapes key items still do nothing, large sections of the hospital serve no purpose, and the pharmacy just doesn't appear in the game until you unlock City planning, despite it being one of the default options. You still cant see your current luck stat in the status menu (you can only view it after a roll for luck.) Some rolls are missing the text to tell you what sat your roll passed/failed on. many chapters take you to locations where they forgot to include a rest area. Speaking of, the amount of unique areas is getting out of hand since they are entirely separate from the town. They cut you off from using almost all of the resources the game is built upon, such as shops, your house, recruiting allies, etc. It's possible for more than half of your missions to be in these disconnected places, so you'd better hope the devs remembered to include an area you can heal from in some of them, or you'll just die. Many of these areas lack a rest area, or a place to access your storage. If you don't remember that in advance, you will absolutely waste the run because you'll die or you can't access key items for the chapter if your backpack is already full. This wouldn't be a problem except that you can't access shops and things unless you're currently in a chapter. During the in-between sections where you're at home, you can't leave to stock up or visit locations. I don't know what reasoning there must be behind this feature. The most annoying bit is that you cannot skip the opening cutscene and tutorial windows, and they will play every single run. It's annoying it doesn't remember the last picked settings so you have to set up every custom run from scratch as well. The game also has 2 secrets and an EXP boost in the first room of every run, so if you're into min-maxing you'll have to go through those steps every single time as well. This all adds up to spending 60-90 seconds setting up every single playthrough, which is just a ton of friction for users before they can even play the game. A few elements are still completely boring RNG, including ghost enemies and unlocking achievements. I failed 18 (so far) Otherworld rolls to find the Upper Kingdom. 18 event checks which cannot be affected by any stats or any player input. Its not good gameplay to blindly fumble with luck for hours and hope. Its just about as fun as losing in most slot machines. One heavily RNG element is a special enemy called "Something Truly Evil." It's a fourth wall breaking RNG based encounter. If you're unlucky and RNG makes you fight it, it's impossible to kill unless RNG makes the enemy spare your life. It's basically a run killer if you just have bad luck. Besides "Something Evil," there are other minor things that basically end your run if they occur, either by RNG or from player choice. Simply put, if youre a new player, the game has certain items or choices you can make which immediately cripple you to the point you cannot continue a run. You must remember all of these to play the game or you will immediately lose. (Ie wearing and removing the Crestfallen Mask reduces every Stat by 2 permanently. You will now fail most Stat checks in the lighthouse.) One missing feature is the ability to speed up text and skip cutscenes. Especially with the lack of diverse events, the fact you have to wait for the text to play an animation to appear gets very, very annoying. Especially while grinding the RNG, it wastes so much of your time with text and mini-animations, like the school window jumpscare visitor. Its a 10 second animation which equates to "take 2 reason damage." The visual style of the game is one of the most impressive I've found from indie horror games. Charming illustrations drawing inspiration from artists like Junji Ito (who actually makes an unofficial appearance as an unnamed side character) wrapped up in a retro Gameboy-era package. The illustrations somehow work in pixel art form, which is incredible compared to a lot of the more generic pixel art games available. The game also allows you to swap between 1-bit or 2-bit color, which adds an extra level of shading to all of the artwork in the game. Combined with the choice of different color pallets and the game hold up well in all of them. Graphically, it's very impressive from an artistic standpoint. Imo the game is probably only worth its current price tag ($15) at its beat, but now that I've played it for more than a few hours I don't know if I would even pay that much. Maybe $10? The one positive is that it can apparently be molded, but I have no experience with that. Also pushing development onto the community instead of fully fleshing out your product is incredibly lazy, but there's no proof that's what the intention was. Honestly if the dev opened the door to modding, I would hope they could find someone who could assist in finishing the official content. Honestly the dev might do better just being an artist for other people's projects, that way either someone else can do a better job coding, or there will be less pressure so the scope of the game can actually be larger.Show moreShow less
I got the game back in its first year in EA. Been a fan and loved the hell out of the vibe this game brought. But let's address some things before we start setting off party poppers and funeral bells. The bulleted points are the parts I've experienced and either enjoyed or felt underwhelmed by over the course of time I've owned and played this game. • First, the music is fantastic, gets you very hyped and tense. • The 2bit visuals feel right at home and quite nostalgic, very good. • The mysteries are interesting, even if a bit short, but there's plenty to explore and try in different ways. • Combat feels appropriate for what you face, you're not an action hero, and you very likely can and will die. • Relying on the discord for mod distribution is, has, and always will be an inefficient and unpleasant experience. • The content updates we sporadically got were fantastic and kept things interesting (even if they were very, very seldom). • Lots of missing promised improvements and fixes (accessibility options, UI overhaul, save-load functionality)... Now let's look at some of the more controversial changes brought on by the publisher-backed 1.0 release. • Artwork and lore changes This is supposedly because some people were gnashing and biting about the art style of the sprites for years, how it supposedly looks like stolen/traced Junji Ito artwork. For what you're getting, this game is homage. It's derivative. That's a huge selling point that gave this game a lot of charm. Now it's been changed. And maybe beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but these changes look... undercooked. They're a flat downgrade. And pending the time I write this review, the Discussions board is rife with similar sentiments. I'm stunned, not just disappointed, at how much of a blow the game took visually, for the sake of dodging these accusations. In so doing, it gives credence to the accusers' claims. Apparently, all references to Junji Ito have been scrubbed without warning, replaced by a mustached man. And everyone's age has been set to 20 for some reason. Is this pressure from the publishers to net a rating for the physical release? Was it considered inappropriate in a few countries? No real explanation as to why, seems like a weird thing to change since the game's got a very obvious slant towards the protagonists being high schoolers, or fresh out of high school at the most for a small number of characters. Now it just looks weird and doesn't make sense from a narrative perspective. You try explaining what a 20-year-old is doing in their fourth senior year in high school and tell me why 2 and 2 equals 5. EDIT: They rolled back some of the changes, fixed up some of the ages more particularly. And there's supposedly a way to restore the old artwork of certain characters under specific circumstances. But for the mostpart, the changes are in-tact and looks pretty bad. Changes the vibe of a lot of the characters and their expressions. • The new content It's... not a lot. It hardly added much. Sure, this is just like any other patch, but a 1.0 patch, going out of Early Access deserves a lot more than that. The Blood Moon update over a year ago gave us more than this. For all of the fanfare put into this launch trailer for 1.0, I had my heart holding out for this patch to give us all the promised content, improvements, maybe stuff I didn't expect to see. It's not bad, but it's underwhelming compared to past content updates. • The trailer God, seeing this got me so hyped today. It looks so incredible as a way to really pull you in and get you to try the game. Guess that's what it was meant to do. But maybe it gets my expectations way too high, cause this trailer has more polish and charm now than the game itself. It's like the opening act at a concert doing five times the work for the main show. If this kind of passion, effort, and quality could've visited upon the game during its four years of development, I might not be evaluating the trailer itself with skepticism. I don't count the trailer itself as bad, just the work behind it being misplaced. It's function is purely to hype up newcomers and nothing more, and this feels a little dishonest for the amount of work put into a game that, starting off, I was passionate about from the perspective of a fan. People might clown my review, but I wanted to be honest. If you're a newcomer and you haven't watched or played it, give it a try. I won't say this game is bad, because even with all of its problems and controversy kept hidden behind the curtain, I like it. I enjoyed it for the amount of time I gave it. I'm just disappointed that it didn't bloom into something bigger and had to get hobbled and kneecapped by development troubles and pressure from fans and skeptics online. Hopefully, this isn't the last update we'll see for this game, and maybe it can improve and grow into something more worthy of the hype, post-EA. Bottom line, if you're new to World of Horror, get it. Try it. It's still worth the $20 USD price.Show moreShow less
tl;dr: Disappointing, wasted potential, meaningless, no story or gameplay of any value. Having watched the trailer and some gameplay on youtube, the game seemed amazing. However, it's perhaps the most disappointing game I've played in a decade. Amazing idea, but the execution is awful. It's shallow, abstract, boring, unatmospheric, and crucially: There's no gameplay to speak of. The tutorial mystery that most people play first is incredibly misleading. It has contextual clicking in the various scenes, you drawing sigils on a chalkboard, etc. It sets your exceptions up quite high. In truth, there's nothing like that at all in the rest of the game. You make very few choices, you just click locations that have been circled to progress(or if you want a sub-quest that does more or less nothing, you can click on 2 other specified locations). No clicking on the backgrounds to find clues or items or anything. It's quite baffling why it's a thing in the tutorial mystery. Each time you change location, you get a random "event". I use the term loosely, because essentially the game says which stat of yours goes down. There's almost never a choice, and when there is, it's completely a "did you choose the right choice for your stats" kinda deal. There are zero lasting consequences to these in any way(no cross event effects or the like, nothing that affects anything). To clarify, these events aren't related in ANY way to the mystery you're solving, they're just random filler nonsense. For example: "You look out of the window and see smoke. Do you a) Look more closely, b) Look away <-- (A leads to a Strength roll, B to a Dexterity roll, each has minor consequences whether it fails or not). A huge problem for the game is that there's no story, or more precisely, no narrative. Things kinda happen in a vague, abstract way that tells you nothing. A sentence or two that tries to evoke some feeling, or maybe tell a tiny fragment of the mystery, but so little that there's no overarching thread to follow, so there's no real events. No characters, no dialogue nothing. Just a sort of "two-sentence horror" kinda thing. When you reach the final area, it tells you what the point is and the story ends or you have a boss fight that's usually meaningless(you can't damage the enemy except through 1 button, so you just press it until you win. I actually did kill one of the bosses by clever use of spells as a sort of cheat(immune to damage otherwise), but the game defaulted to the result that I had ran away instead of killing the summoner, which told me all there is to know of the complexity for the endings. Meaning, the option to kill the boss was never there, it was just a fakeout) Because of this, any atmosphere there might otherwise be is immediately thrown away. When nothing matters, the atmosphere can't be felt either. The only sort of gameplay there is where the player can affect anything is the combat, but that's very simple as there's always a right answer to each fight. There are four submenus, each with half a dozen commands(so around 24), but realistically you won't be using more than 6 all in all. (based on playing through the game 4 times and failing once) There's no incentive to wandering around the town outside of the pre-shown route, which makes everything feel extra pointless since you have no choice in anything. You just press the button as the game wants, or you'll lose automatically. To conclude: Awful design, pointless gameplay, disjointed and weak storytelling, ineffective atmosphere. I guess the art is pretty good, and it kinda does do the 80s Japanese adventure game genre pretty well(a fascinating genre that usually had awful gameplay. I suppose this game is way better than those in most respects, except for the story).Show moreShow less
what if instead of world of horror, it was world of freaky, and everyone was oiled up and made out?Show moreShow less
Feels like most of the production value went into the trailer, rather than the game. There are so many odds and ends that just feel unfinished. I bought this during early access, and the updating during that time was rough. The developer was almost nonexistent in the Discord, and during the months of absence of the previous update, I honestly thought this game was just going to die off. But then the 1.0 came out. It didn't really add much to it. Maybe 3 new missions and easier access for people to mod it. Perhaps the developer was hoping the mod community would flesh it out more. Problem with that is, most mod content are nothing but memes. Nobody seems to be really trying to add actual content. There are also places and things you can find that literally go nowhere. (School roof is one). There was something here. Something that had potential to be grand. But I feel like the developer just got bored of it halfway through, then just slapped on the 1.0 to say it's finished.Show moreShow less

UPDATE: HOLY MOTHER OF GOD. MY EYES MAY DECIEVE ME, BUT I HAVE JUST SEEN THERE WILL BE CONTENT UPDATE SOON. I BELIEVE WE ACTUALLY MANAGED TO CONVINCE THE DEVS TO REVIVE THIS PROJECT!! I'D STILL TAKE MY REVIEW INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN PURCHASING, AS WE HAVE NO IDEA AS TO HOW CONSISTENT THE UPDATE/UPDATES WILL BE, AND FOR ALL I KNOW, THIS WON'T CHANGE MY REVIEW. CROSSING MY FINGERS AND TOES, MY FRIENDS!! I really love this game. I think it's a uniquely horrifying experience with gripping gameplay. That being said, don't buy it. The game is lacking in content and the devs have actively ignored the community, refusing to deliver on promises made for missing content updates and further tweaks to the game. In it's current state, at around 20 dollars, it is nowhere near good enough to warrant that pricetag. Not only that, but the developers only reappear online to peddle merch of an unfinished game which has been entirely abandoned, which gives me the implication that they're only trying to squeeze pennies out of you with merch opportunities and a game they won't put any budget or time into working on, despite promises made in a Kickstarter (allegedly). It has been two years since bug fixes were released, and in two years there have only been more and more merch releases for a game without the level of depth that would warrant you spending that much money. I truly hope the devs come back to this game. It is a crying shame they've neglected it in the way they have. I hope that they have the decency to pass it onto another team willing to respect the people who've bought their product with their hard earned money, or in a more likely circumstance, that another dev team does a very, very similar game to this, as what's there truly does get me excited for what this game COULD be. But right now, just don't. If you really have to get the game, get it on sale, and publicly call on the devs to acknowledge this project.Show moreShow less
