I can't say that this is a bad game, but i can't recommend it either. First off, this is a remake of the original PS2 Yakuza, which i have played many years ago. Several things have been modernised but also, several things were worsened. All in all, this feels like and expansion of Yakuza 0, but with less content in all. The combat - This is a mixed bag. It has abandoned the system of the PS2 title and follows Yakuza 0, which is a good thing. On the other hand, it introduces systems that are completely unnecessary like the Kiwami system, which is simply a point during a boss fight in which the boss will start regenerating its health like crazy, unless you use a Heat Action that damages it and stops its healing. The problem is you need to buy the specific skill to even use the moves(a thing that the game does not tell you), and its simply not fun, because it forces you to metagame, knowing that soon the boss will start healing itself and you need the heat ready to use by then, taking you out of the fight completely. Just a terrible system. Minigames - They are basically the same from Yakuza 0, with less options, the managing minigames are gone. Of note, the original PS2 title had a massage minigame, which is gone in this one, and the cabaret had several hosts with whom you could interact with. In this one, there are only two hosts. Story - The saving grace of this game, although not as remarkable as Yakuza 0, its very good and offers more detail on the characters than the PS2 original. The substories(aka sidequests) are also well written and more manageable. In the original, you were basically given no information on what to do and where to go. In this one, you have all. A plus. The Grind - The worse aspect of this game. You will have to grind, A LOT. For instance, to level up your dragon style, you need to grind fights with Majima, thanks to the "Majima Everywhere" system. This is a terrible idea in my opinion, because it totally turns Majima into a comedy side kick, a very different take on the "Joker psycho" he had on the original, and basically forces you to meet him all the time, which kills the weight and value of the character. When you encounter him during scripted main story segments, all the tension from him is gone, because i just fought him in the alley a moment ago. Yeah, this was a terrible decision just for the sake of grinding and to put a constant nuisance like Mister Shakedown from Yakuza 0. Another example, there's a master that can teach you advanced moves. In the original game, you could talk to him during different times in the story to learn them, that was it, but now, you have to grind the Arena minigame for points in order to qualify for his teachings. Atmosphere - To me, the "darkness" tone of the original is gone, replaced by a comedic one. While Yakuza 0 had a great mix of comedy, tension, violence, relaxation, etc., this one is more on the comedic and bland side. The original PS2 had this feeling that the entire city is after you and was a dark and more serious place. In this, you are fighting all the time for the grind, so the menacing aspect does not hold up. I'm sure i'm on the minority here, but while playing this title, i often missed playing the original, and this usually tell me that the game didn't strike home. I can't with a straight face say that this game is worse than its original, because its not true. It has more content and better graphics, but something was lost on the way. And it's surely worse than Yakuza 0! Buy that one instead.Show moreShow less
SO THIS IS WHY IT TOOK SO LONG. I can only review on the technical stuff right now of course. 1. The game looks and performs AMAZINGLY. 2. You can implement tying your framerate to all the cutscenes or having them run at the standard framerate. THAT IS A DAMN GAME CHANGER and should be a PC standard. 3. There are WAY more graphical settings this time around even with super sampling. I have my at 2x and it looks amazing. 4. The game is night and day in perform from Yakuza 0. Same engine but SOOOOO MUCH IMPROVEMENT. 5. IT HAS FREAKING AUTOSAVE now along with manual saves so you don't have to sweat the time before work or school now to play. 6. The attention to Komorocho, its detail is soooooo close to Kabukicho, that i feel like im there while playing it. I made a trip to the real place and Yakuza has the place down in detail to the TOUTS. I am so hyped to eventually go back! The all i can say for right now, i am sure i have plenty of game to experience before giving a big review. JOB WELL DONE ON MAKING THIS FEEL LIKE A PC GAME. I can't wait to play more!Show moreShow less
