I've quite enjoyed the previous Zup! games, but this one was a chore to finish. The new accelerating block mechanic just doesn't function well. The levels are either way too easy, requiring barely any interaction, or you must try the same click progression over and over and over until the acceleration pieces behave just right to solve the puzzle. Previous Zup games weren't hard, I mainly play these to relax, but the solutions always seemed fair, even if it took a bit of time to figure them out. The difficulty also ramped up in a logical way as you progressed, with maybe one or two easy puzzles mixed in near the end. Here, whether you win or fail felt very random, same for the difficulty going from one level to the next. I do think Quiet River is a good dev worth supporting and I would highly recommend the Zup! series overall, but for me this particular entry fell short and just wasn't fun. 2/5Show moreShow less

A very pointless game. Everyone buys this game only for its achievements and nothing else.Show moreShow less

Zup! Zero is a construction kit copy + paste game. The "developer" used the craptastic ClickTeam Fusion video game construction kit, copying + pasting and arranging premade assets, using premade level design tools so they could pretend they're an actual game developer. The game itself is nothing special, it's a basic Adobe Flash/mobile tier puzzle game where you tap on little explosive balls, with the intention of getting the "blue" ball to land on a green safe zone, without being catapulted off the screen or anything. It's incredibly simplistic and shallow, the kind of thing surpassed by free browser and mobile apps, let alone free games on Steam. So there's zero justification for this being sold as a paid product on Steam. The developer has asset flipped this same game onto Steam an whopping SEVENTEEN times, amongst other shovelware they push onto Steam. This review will appear the same as other reviews for the same games in the series... since the developer has copy + pasted their entire game, there's no surprise that reviews for the game should be similar. Games made from the ClickTeam Fusion template the developer has ripped off and spammed onto Steam like so much pollution all suffer from the same defects. A strong argument can be made that construction kits like ClickTeam Fusion should never be used to make games for profit, as the "developer", Quiet River has done here. These construction kits are intended to teach people some of the basic principles of game development, and to make small demos to pass around with friends. They're not intended to replace to actual work of real, professional game developers. So it's inappropriate when amateurs try to use these for profit, without any actual, real game development effort taking place. This doesn't result in products that have any real meaningful value for gamers. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The game features extremely lazy, minimalist "art", of the type you normally expect to see in low effort Flash/browser games and mobile apps. Considering this is being evaluated as a PC game, having the graphics phoned in like this isn't going to result in a high quality, visually impressive game that PC gamers are used to seeing. Bewilderingly, the game doesn't include proper audio controls, so you can't turn off the annoying background music, you'll need to alt+tab out and stop the music using the Windows sound mixer. This is obviously not okay and it's unclear why the developers chose not to include this basic feature. The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just point and click stuff like a browser/Flash game. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here. Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the Clickteam Fusion construction kit - the "No-Code" construction kit that "Anyone can make games with!!". Including, you know, people who aren't game developers. Which is a problem. This is a very poor quality toolset sometimes used by amateur developers as it's free (so they don't have to pay for GameMaker Studio) and doesn't require advanced game development skills, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities (it's arguably worse than GameMaker Studio). Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine. So it's inappropriate when amateurs try to use these for profit, without any actual, real game development effort taking place. This doesn't result in products that have any real meaningful value for gamers. The very poor quality of this game puts it squarely on-par with ancient 1990's Flash/Java games, and given it's 2024 (and this was released not so far back in 2018), gamers and the industry expect and deserve better than this kind of low effort shovelware. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a modest spike in player counts for the game. But this only happened once, around the same time that trading cards were applied to the game... so this is just card idlers getting their cards and moving on. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards. One of the driving elements of this shovelware game is "achievement spam", that is to say the game features a ridiculously large number of trivial/automatically granted achievements, 800 of them, in fact. It's a damning indictment for this shovelware that people only bought it for easy achievements, and not because it has any serious merit as a real game. Zup! S is relatively cheap at $2 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 9,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product. This game features a number of suspicious, likely fake positive reviews. The reviews all appear at almost exactly the same time, very shortly after the game launched on Steam, all have a direct Steam purchase of the game, and all have very similar wording and writing style. Immediately after this huge peak of reviews, reviews (and player counts) for the game dropped incredibly sharply. This is highly unusual given the very low quality of the game and poor player counts. The "Positive" review score on this game should be taken with a large grain of salt. This might have been done to deceive/mislead gamers into paying for a bad product.
