“The moment your contraption falls apart is when it tells you which beam wasn't strong enough — Besiege turns real material physics into a toy box that teaches engineering, with a 55-level campaign that never dictates the answer and a Workshop library of 200,000 player-built machines.”
Il nostro verdetto
Set Besiege back into its moment in time and its position is a peculiar one: a small-studio game that spent five years in the oven and still, a decade later, has not been caught by its imitators. It is not flawless. But the one thing it gets right, it gets right to an extreme.
A 2015 phenomenon that 2026 still hasn't copied

Besiege was a phenomenon of the 2015 early access era, cited back then alongside Minecraft and Kerbal Space Program as proof the build-it-as-you-sell-it model could work. It opened early access in January 2015, baked for a full five years, and only shipped 1.0 in February 2020 — and what that bought was a material-physics building experience that, even now, almost nobody has matched. Ten years on, there is no shortage of building games copying its shape, but making real material physics work to the point where the crash itself is an effective teacher remains, more or less, a thing only Besiege does. Plenty of sandboxes let you bolt parts together; almost none make the parts fail honestly enough that the failure teaches you something. That card, the one that turns a wreck into a tutor, still hasn't been stolen by 2026, which is a long time for a small studio to hold a lead.
Critics gave it 77 to 85, players gave it 95 — the gap holds the truth

There is a telling split in its reception: OpenCritic's 10-critic aggregate lands at 77.5 with a 75% recommendation, PC Gamer gave it 85, yet Steam's player rating is a towering 95% positive. The gap is not a case of someone being wrong. It is that a short review window makes the sandbox and the decade-long Workshop tail nearly impossible to fully experience in a few days — and that tail is exactly what players are scoring so highly. Critics dock the thin campaign and the steep on-ramp; players love the thousand-hour creative release that never gets old. Both are looking at different faces of the same game. Our composite 7.5 is meant to sit honestly between them: the ceiling on play and creativity is absurdly high, and the base content volume and the beginner on-ramp are genuine, real weaknesses. Both of those things are true at once.
Who should make the trip, who should walk past, and which version to grab

Spelling out who it is for matters, because this game's polarization is almost entirely a matter of player temperament. If you are the kind of engineering brain that loves to take things apart, loves to fail forward, and reads every collapse as data rather than a blow, Besiege is practically tailored to you — you will sit in that editor for an entire evening, cheerfully hunting solutions for one beam that keeps snapping. If instead you want ready-made levels, a clear correct answer, and no obligation to puzzle things out yourself, those opening levels with nobody holding your hand will likely have you off the ride inside two hours. That is not a flaw; it simply never set out to please everyone. On versions: if you want the Workshop tail, co-op, and the water warfare of The Splintered Sea, it has to be PC — the console builds cut all of that. If you only want a quiet run through the 55-level campaign, the Switch or PlayStation editions are plenty, and handheld is genuinely comfortable. It is cheap year-round and has dipped as low as $1.49, and that 95%-positive volume of content earns the price several times over — there is genuinely no version of this purchase where you feel cheated on value. The only question is whether your temperament fits, not whether the money does.
One line to close on: Besiege is not a game you "finish" — it is a toy box that keeps tinkering alongside you, one that makes wood truly bend and break and turns the crash into the best teacher you'll find, to a degree few rivals have managed even now. If you have ever taken something apart just to see how it worked, this is the game that rewards that instinct for a thousand hours straight. And if you haven't, it is the one that might teach you to start.
