The world is a vast, beautiful and dangerous place – especially when you have been shrunk to the size of an ant. Can you thrive alongside the hordes of giant insects, fighting to survive the perils of the backyard?

“Obsidian turns a shrunk backyard into survival with a story spine, where co-op and accessibility polish are its quiet armor”

Il nostro verdetto

Thirteen people built a twenty-million-player hit

Obsidian and the success of Grounded

Trace Grounded back to its start and it reads like an unlikely success story. It came out of Obsidian, a studio defined by talky role-playing games — Fallout: New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity, The Outer Worlds are its calling cards. This survival game was only the side experiment of a thirteen-person crew while the main team chased The Outer Worlds. And that experiment grew from early access into a twenty-million-player live-service hit, took a Golden Joystick for Xbox Game of the Year, locked in an 83 on Metacritic and an 84 percent recommend on OpenCritic, and outright spawned a 2025 sequel.

Its coordinates in the survival canon are clear. Where the Rusts and Valheims define the lane with raw openness and hardcore edge, Grounded answered with something else entirely — story, direction, and a welcome mat for newcomers a survival game might otherwise scare off. It never set out to replace anyone, but by now nobody can easily replace the spot it holds, and the sequel arriving in 2025 is the clearest proof that the formula has legs.

Who it is for, and who should walk past

The ideal player profile

Plainly: if you want survival but cannot stomach the hollow "tossed into a field, fend for yourself" feel of a pure sandbox, if you like a clear story spine tugging you forward, if you would happily round up a few friends to build, explore and outlast the nights together, or if you are simply curious about the shrunk-backyard conceit and the insect angle — Grounded is close to tailor-made for you, an easy buy that repays every hour with substance.

Flip it around and a few players should weigh it first. Hardcore-realism survivalists who relish being ground down by numbers will find it on the gentle side. Players hungry for PvP and the joy of griefing will find only PvE here, with no battlefield for them.

And lone wolves with thin tolerance for difficulty spikes will likely get run off by the solo spiders and the curve — in which case, drag a teammate along before you start. The gap between the solo and co-op experience is wide enough that it almost functions as a difficulty setting in disguise; the friends you bring are, in practice, the single biggest lever on how forgiving Grounded feels.

The one line nobody can copy

What makes Grounded irreplaceable

In the end, what no peer can easily reproduce is the chemistry of three things braided together: the scale immersion of a familiar backyard blown up into lethal wilderness, the story spine BURG.L's quest flow bolts onto survival, and the careful polish of touches like Arachnophobia Safe Mode that turn accessibility into a model. Its sharpest rival is the deep-sea benchmark Subnautica — both carry a structured spine and a powerful sense of place, but Subnautica chooses isolation and the dread of the deep to force your growth, steep and oppressive, while Grounded makes the same depth more approachable and far friendlier to travel in company.

On versions, go straight for the Fully Yoked finished build that gathers all four years of updates — new bosses, New Game+ and every biome present and accounted for. It is not flawless; flat audio and a lurching solo difficulty are honest marks against it. But with one backyard, honestly filled, it proves a survival game can run deep without grinding you into dust. That is enough to keep it standing in this lane for a long while yet.
