“What if the creature you raised wasn't a sidekick but your actual weapon and your whole loadout? That's Voidling Bound — nine base species, 62 evolved forms, breeding and splicing you can tinker forever, let down by shallow combat and a balance pass that never arrived.”

Il nostro verdetto

The Creature Isn’t Your Sidekick — It’s The Build

Here’s the big reason Voidling Bound works: your Voidling isn’t just a pet with a weapon strapped to the idea. It is the weapon. It is the loadout. The shooting sits downstream from the creature you hatched, shaped, evolved, and spliced together. That one decision gives this game its identity in the 2026 creature-collecting lane.

You start with nine base species, and those branch into 62 evolved forms, with some lines going up to 31 forms. Then DNA Splicing lets you graft three cross-species mutated perks onto one creature. That’s where the game gets dangerous for your free time. You’re not just picking the “best monster.” You’re asking, “What if I freeze the arena with Cryo and a slow gene?” Or, “What if this Thunder-Pyro hybrid turns every fight into a chain reaction?” That’s the hook. Breeding is strategy. Evolution is gear. Your creature is the build sheet.

And yeah, Palworld is the obvious shadow here. Palworld made creature collecting with weapons explode, but a lot of the time those creatures feel like tools, workers, mounts, or extra firepower. Voidling Bound is more personal. You’re stitching this thing together. You’re testing branches. You’re replaying missions because you want to see what one mutation does. That bond hits harder than a fixed Pokédex checklist, and the designs have that weird Spore-like charm where hatching something actually feels physical.

Buy It For Theorycrafting, Not For Perfect Shooting

If you’re the player who wants pets to be the center of the build, not decoration around it, this is absolutely your lane. Voidling Bound is for creature collectors who stare at perk trees, compare evolution routes, and lose an hour because one DNA combo might break the whole mission. On that front, the launch is strong: OpenCritic has it at 80, labeled Strong, with a 68.8% recommendation rate across 16 top critic reviews, and Steam sits at 93% Very Positive from 1669 reviews. For an indie debut from Hatchery Games, that’s not noise. That’s a real signal.

But look, if you’re coming in for tight third-person shooting, brutal encounter tuning, or a late-game that keeps punching back, pump the brakes. The shooting feels fine, but it’s not the deep part. The missions recycle. The objectives start to blur. And the balance is messy enough that some gene-and-element setups just flatten fights. The Abyss endgame should feel scary, but once Corrupted DNA Catalyzers let you out-stat the threat, the descent loses its teeth.

So my advice is simple: on PC, the standard edition is enough. Steam Deck is playable, and you don’t need to sit around waiting for paid DLC to make the core idea click. If you want a polished action shooter with hard numbers and a real endgame wall, this probably isn’t your game. If you want to build a monster from scratch until the weapon feels like an afterthought, Voidling Bound earns that 8 out of 10.
